An interesting decision by the White House to put Cheney out -- via Wall Street Journal op-ed -- to pushback on Alan Greenspan's book. “In his new book, ‘The Age of Turbulence,’ my longtime friend Alan Greenspan argues that President Bush's economic and budget policies have been fiscally irresponsible. I've known and admired Alan for years, and I believe he was a great chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. But I think his assessment is off the mark.”

Bush/Cheney inherited a $230 billion annual budget surplus and turned it into nearly $ 2 trillion in additional debt while increasing spending by the greatest percentage since the Vietnam war and giving massive tax cuts, most of which went to the already wealthy.

How do you tell when Dick Cheney is lying?...his lips are moving.

Don't worry Dick, I am sure that the increase in your Halliburton stock will take care of you nicely.

Everbody on here seems to hate Dick Cheney. He is an intelligent man. Smart men don't say a lot but when they do it is usually worth listening to. Our economy is doing fine.

Maybe the economy is not fine in your state. Which I can see why, when the northern states are all losing their jobs overseas. You need to move to Texas, where we may just have to bring in people from overseas, since we can't find any Americans to fill them. All the jobs in my area are going unfilled, either because people can't pass a drug test or they are basically lazy. If you cannot find a good paying job in this economy, you are just not doing your best and that means you are not going to succeed in life my friend.

Just because there are idiots that can't read the fine print on their housing costs or people don't get a job with benefits or people that are unhappy with their job and are too lazy to get out and look to better themselves, doesn't mean we have a bad economy. The treasury is raking in more and more money then ever before, jobless rate is way down and for a bad economy, people are sure buying up those plasma televisions and fancy cars and the refrigerators that do everything but dance with you. Everybody wants a piece of the dream, but you have to face reality before you dare to dream.

Bush is passing down $2 trillion in debt that wasn't there when he took office. Is that fiscal responsibility???????????

Wayne, on an inflation adjusted basis the stock market is still below its level before the last recession. And it's the rosiest aspect of the economy. The Bush economic miracle is that he's kept the MSM snowed that things are going well for so long. People who live outside the top 20% know better. Cheney may well be intelligent but he's also a dangerous authoritarian and a liar.

Let's see, Hitler, Stalin, Napoleon and Ataturk were all intelligent men. They were all despots who were tru believers in their cause and they all led their countries into wars which bankrupted their treasuries, led to the killings of millions of innocents, they were all enemies of civil liberties and they all rose from humble beginnings and ruthlessly took over their particular political parties. The only difference between Dick Chaney and these men is that Mr. Chaney comes from a country where democracy is so valued, even a man as ruthless as he could not completely mold it into his image and likeness. We have remained a democracy not because of Dick Chaney but in spite of him and the kool-aid drinkers who think this man is wonderful. He is an anethema to the democratic ideals of our founding fathers.

The market has only been increasing in value by under 5% per year since W took office. Historically it has increased by a little over 9%. Looks pretty bad to me.

In Texas yes, where did The shrubster come from? Does no one remember Katrina? Where did the money go ,Louisiana ? no, that money was pulled from there and diverted to Texas! Why? The only reason our economy has remained slightly stable was due to Alan Greenspan .He was told over 4 years ago to increase interest rates and flat refused telling the shubster that it would unbalance our economy and send us plummeting into a depression instead of a repression. No he retired in 06 ,since then we are now beginning to see inflation hitting us full on with the brunt being the middle and low income hit hardest ,Why? Well the shubster and his half wits have forced the interest rates up with billions going out. Does not take a genius to see that with lower rates people buy which was Alan’s reason for maintaining the rate .People buy and the Economy stabilizes to a point . Increased rated now that he has gone and what are you seeing?

You have to remember Jerry is from Corpus Christi. Its hard to find people to sell those puke shell necklaces and rent surfboards on the beach who aren't on drugs.
I'm a white collar worker for a Fortune 200 company. I used to get good raises, but starting 6 years ago most of my raises have been 1% a year. Right now we are laying people off.
Companies have hit 60 year high for corporate profits, but its not trickling down to the rank and file workers. people are squeezed by high energy prices, thats why the Feds are worried about inflation. A gallon of milk is $4. My health care costs go up each year and that eats up my miniscule raise, so each year I have less and less expendable income. There is a crash coming and if you are too stupid to see it then you get what you deserve.

The Administration sends out Cheney, who is widely believed to be manipulative, sneaky, devious, and dishonost, to rebut Alan Greenspan, who everyone believes to be honost, truthful, accurate, and prepared, when it comes to matters of the economy and fiscal judgement. They couldn't have picked a worse person to speak out on behalf of the Administration and defend their record.

The problem with "very intelligent" Dick Cheney is that he is suffering from brain damage, caused by his series of heart attacks in the 90's. This isn't just my opinion. Its the opinion of a lot of people who know him--especially those who worked with him in previous republican administrations. It is an opinion widely held at the Hoover Institution, a very conservative think tank, made up largely of republicans from the inner circle, with connections to big business.

Do I care if a president is Republican or Democrat? not really, but if you ask me: do I care a president is a honest and intelligent person, Yes I do!!! Remember 4 years ago when I tried to persuade my Republican friends in Texas that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, no one believed me back then. My democrat friends told me the war is about oil. Now I know who are right. It makes sense. But why Bush told us the truth back then? The only reason is that if he told the truth, congress would not allow our country being dragged to the war in Iraq. Bush and Cheney are evil! Makinbg a link between 9/11 and Iraq war is not honest. 40 or more percents kids in Texas do not have health insurance, and yet Texan have 60 or more percents people want Bush to fight the war in Iraq with such a huge human and financial cost. Does that make any sense? Alan Greenspan is just telling a truth.
