Jackson reaffirms support for Obama

The Obama campaign just forwarded us a statement from Jesse Jackson, who reiterated his support for Obama, despite being quoted by the Columbia State saying that Obama is "acting like he's white" for not speaking more forcefully regarding the racial incident in Jena, LA.

"I reaffirm my commitment to vote for Sen. Barack Obama," Jackson says in the statement. "He has remarkably transcended race, however the impact of Katrina and Jena makes America's unresolved moral dilemma of race unavoidable. I think Jena is another defining moment of the issue of race and the criminal justice system. This issue requires direct and bold leadership. I commend Sen. Obama for speaking out and demanding fairness on this defining issue. Any attempt to dilute my support for Sen. Obama will not succeed."

Jackson's support for Obama can't be diluted because Obama's race cannot be diluted. He's supporting him only because of his skin color.
I'm still dissapointed in Jesse!  As a black man looking for hope this really hurts....I'm speachless. What a turn coat! Don't worry Obama you still have my vote! OBAMA 08!
Stick a fork in Obama.  Back to the 11% approval rating congress for Barack.
Acting white? What would that be like? Isn't that a horribly RACIST comment? I hope Jackson apologizes. How narrow minded!
Who else did you think Jackson would support?
If not emulating the white, Mr Obama is certainly emulating the typical american aggressiveness in his mimicking of Mr. Bush's war on terror. Why not attack the root cause of that war instead and allow Palestinians a better future than dying on their knees under the yoke of Israel's might acquired with american money.
Jesse Jackson is a turncoat?  Jesse Jackson cares about one thing and one thing only - the plight of black people.  That's not an insult - I admire his dedication, as he has spent his life working to improve the situation for blacks and, by extension, other racial minorities.

Jesse Jackson is not going to give someone a pass because they happen to be black.  Quite the contrary.  If you are a black person of power, Jesse Jackson expects that you will use that influence to help members of your own race who are not so fortunate - if by no other means than lending your voice to their cause.

I admit, I have seen not a single thing about the Jena incident.  I haven't seen it reported in the national news, and I am a long ways from LA.  I haven't heard any of the candidates mention it until today.  After researching what happened there, I am disgusted that none of them have mentioned it - especially Obama.  Like it or not, he is black and he should be the first one of the candidates to stand up and challenge racism, particularly when it is as systemic as it seems to be in Jena.
Just the fact that Michael Jackson still supports him says something of his desperation to have anyone...

What's that?

It's not Michael, you say.
Then who?

Oh, the other Jackson, Jessie.
Now which one is the crazy one????
Jean_mée Desveaux:

If there had been a just settlement for the Plaestinian issue in 2000, there would have been no 9/11.

For too long, America has supported the destruction of the Palestinian people.

This is stupid!  Obama is white & he is black (not sure how someone acts black or white) - he is an American and that is all that should matter.

Go Obama!
Mr Obama is certainly emulating the typical american aggressiveness.
Jean_mée Desveaux (Sent Wednesday, September 19, 2007 2:52 PM)

Yes, Mr. Obama would be much better served by emulating the French passivness. He could get down on his knees and ask how he may sevice the terrorist. Of course if he was from France he would already be on his knees.

Grow a pair.
For too long, Palestine has supported the destruction of the Palestinian people.
And 9/11 would still have happened.
You must be very ignorant to even bring up King Michael Jackson into a political discussion.

What you should be talking about is the fact that OJ SIMPSON endorsed HILLARY CLINTON.
I never believed the story anyway. The media is desperately trying to pit black people against one another so that they can crown Hillary Clinton. That'll never happen.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for Rev. Jesse Jackson. That's the man who won 11 Democratic primaries in 1988. Today he's supporting a candidate who will win the whole thing, even if the media, the pundits and cynics don't think so. They can't beat us. It's up to them to join us or eat crow. Period.
Carrie...As usual you do not know what you are talking about.  Obama has spoken out on it several times  Long before Hillay decided to go on Al Sharpton today.

Anybody who thinks this so call small town reporter printing this in a small town paper and it hitting the wires along with Bill being in LA tommorrow I have a bridge to sell you.

I don't believe in coincidences...looks like Hillaryis44 to me.
To Carrie,

If you do some research you will find that OBAMA has indeed been speaking out about the Jena case! The media has not reported it so do some homework. As for the turncoat statement I say that because to say Obama is acting white is an insult to all black people. So if Obama does not jump when Jesse say so he's not for the equality of blacks? Have you forgotten OBAMA is running for the president of the United States not Black America! Martin Luther King and the civil right movement helped not only black Americans but also ALL AMERICANS!!!!!

If Jesse had a problem he should have taken it to Obama not the public especially if he claims to be an advisor to Obama. He needs to be DUMPED from the campaign! Furthermore what do I tell my nephew? Act ghetto so you can be blacker? Or hey here is a guy and a movement that says its okay to be intelligent and BE BLACK! Jesse contradicts himself!!!! He's an embarrassment to the Obama campaign if these were indeed his words. Obama is out for unity and Jesse is causing a divide. As a former admirer of Mr. Jackson I'm deeply hurt by this. It is as though Jesse set Obama up for the fall especially among blacks looking for some hope for the future. I grew up in the ghetto and I know how tough it is. I want to help bring up my brother and sisters and kill this crab in a barrel mentality. We are all the same and it's our duty to look out for each other white, black, blue or green!

So before you criticize learn the facts first. You and Jesse sound as though you are supporters of another campaign anyway so I won't bother you much longer. OBMAMA in 08!

Carrie, I'm black as well and I'm not sure you statement is entirely fair. First of all, I'm not sure it's necessarily the place of any presidentital candidate to be compelled to speak out on local law enforcement issues.

It's 2007 ANYONE--white, black, asian or latino should speak out against rascism--not just the "black" presidential candidate.

JH-NYC--Jackson is supporting Obama b/c he's from Chicago not b/c he's black.  I think if Obama had been from some place else he would be in Clinton's corner.
Jesse Jackson is nothing but turncoat. I'm not sure why people regarded him as religious leader while fathering a baby outside his marriage. Yes, he's going to endorse Obama so he would become one of Obama's cabinet if he wins but that's where as far as Jackson & Oboma could go. Obama will stay as # 2 as Jackson and that's it. They will carry their LOGOS' as 'INEXPERIENCED' on their backs the rest of their lives. Go ahead Jesse & Barac, make my day!!!!!!
I like what I know of Obama, but he is too much a blank slate.  He might even be my candidate in years to come.  But today, Hillary is the only candidate who will fight back against the repubican filth and half truth machine.  We know what she stands for and could do far worse that 8 more years of Clinton stewardship!
Right on!!!Israel is the cause of the unrest in the Middle East.  It would be beyond expectations for a candidate to name Israel as the catalyst  of our problems in the world.  Mr. Obama, might know this but he cannot say so or he would be crucified by the Zionists of the world.
Everyone please get a clue.  Jesse Jackson is concerned about one thing:  Jesse Jackson.  Do we really need to continue to hear from him?  Haven't most of us been ignoring his antics for years?  He's basically a cartoon character at this point.

And, for what it's worth, there will be no Obama Cabinet, at least not in 2009.  And I serously doubt that President H. Clinton will be considering Jackson as a Cabinet member.
The media will attempt to destroy Obama's grass roots campaign in the same way they attempted to destroy Howard Dean's campaign. Remember the yell? Its just sad. I wonder why American Idol gets more votes than a general election!
To Sierra and RH,
How did "Palestine" come up?  Until we hear the candidates on the Middle East, we don't know if they support a democratic process.  Who in the Middle East has one?  Israel is the only one that has one that works reasonably. The attacks in September of 2001 would have happened no matter what was going on in Israel.  These people who launched the attacks don't care for anyone but themselves and their ideology.  Even if we all converted, they would still attack us.

I suggest that we remain on topic here.  It is Jesse Jackson and his support for Obama.  It could be seen as totally based on skin color/background.  I would hope that it would be a higher level than that.  The senator from IL. does have some great energy and positive ideas, but many of the candidates do.  I just doubt that they would spend much time in my great state of New Jersey...  Go ahead and make your jokes, but we have our great points!
First of all , Barack Obama was the FIRST candidate to condemn what happened in this whole Jena 6 case. In addition to that, Barack Obama was the ONLY candidate that expressed his disgust on the Campaign Trail , in front of ALL RACES , how wrong it was that a BLACK man was convicted of Rape and imprisoned for years for having consensual sex with a White Girl when he was a TEENAGER. Not only that, Barack Obama is the ONLY candidate that called for investigation of the DA over his actions in that South Carolina "Fake Rape" Case. Let's not forget, it was Barack Obama who condemned Imus's comments and publicly suggested that he be FIRED.

Now, as a black woman , I have had it to the gills with other Blacks who think they know what is or is not "ACTING BLACK!" and harshly criticising Barack Obama while plugging in for the biggest and most fake Race Baiting Panderer in this election cycle, Hillary Clinton. She is a phony and only attracts angry divisive sheep who want to keep hearing how they are such a victim that only a White person can save them. You know, that old Plantation crap.

I want you to understand something. Just because Blacks like Barack Obama do not run around the country RACE BAITING and trying to mimic Civil Rights Era Leaders, yelling and screaming at the top of his lungs in a effort to "sound" like he is really saying something ,like SOME others, does not mean he's acting WHITE or not speaking out on issues as strongly as other Blacks. That's a bunch of bullshet. He's all about ACTION !

BTW: Which member of Congress proposed a bill that would fund predominantly BLACK Colleges and just recently had it pass the committee ? Hillary ? NO It was Barack Obama. There is no other politician or Presidential Candidate that cares more about the issues facing the Black Community than Barack Obama and there probably never will be! Believe that !

Just because he doesn't talk like Jesse and Al , doesn't mean he doesn't care. He has already taken a strong stand on the Jena 6 Case. That was good enough for THIS Black woman.
Sen. Barack Obama is going to be the DEMOCRATS choice for the General Election and win the White House BIG TIME IT IS IN THE BOOKS COUNT ON IT !!!!
To Bad So Sad For the Republicans in 08 !!!!
Diamond has a valid point! The fact of the matter is
that the gop has "Filabusted" bills that would bring
America back to "our control" we the people. The gop
main candidates won't even attend a Debate that is controlled by Black moderator or Hispanic. najah is a prime example of being uninformed / ignorant and loving it! The Family Guy sitcom says it best:
The two symbols of the gop is an Elephant and a big
fat guy white guy afraid of CHANGE!

NO JUSTICE NO PEACE
I have had it! Who made Jesse Jackson the leader of the so called "African Americans?" Last time I checked, my skin color was pecan brown. Unless you are color blind, I am not black and the majority of us whom have darkened skin aren't either.

I am an American who will never vote for the Hilda-beast, she lies out of both corners of her hole she calls a mouth. If she wins rest assured there will be suicide bombings in the streets of our country.

I will always cast my vote for the one person who has the lease experience and is truly willing to keep the country secure. I voted for Mr. Bush (Kerry is a Wacko and Al Gore just wants to be President) I know in my heart Mr. Obama has the desire and non-Washingtonian experience to bring our country together and protect this country (a win win).

Hilda-beast and Jesse, the Ignorant Negro; are out for themselves and not anyone else. Other than the fact that they only showed concern for the Jena Six Case this week (for votes and political gain), Barrack has followed the case of Jena Six for some time. If Hillary and Jessie are so helpful and deserving, widespread support would cross both the liberal and conservative spectrum.  As for Mr. Obama he’s not perfect, but he has this so called Black (Non-uncle Tom) independent conservative onboard.

Hillary sales snake oil and turns around then spits Ebola on anyone she deems a threat. I would not put it pass Ole-Hillary to hire Jessie to sabotage Barrack. Barrack does not need Jessie’s endorsement it tarnishes all the hard work Barrack has contributed towards instilling hope. Jessie is just so stupid, the most he can do is think up empty phrases that rhyme. I absolutely dislike the both of them (personally and politically). I literally pray in Jesus’ name, that the rest of America wake up and give the Hilda-beast and Jessie the Ignorant Negro; exactly what they deserve... Nothing, absolutely nothing.

RH Oregon: Nope, sorry, France just doesn't like dumb wars.  Then again, I'm not surprised that you boil down complex foreign issues into "grow a pair" and other idiotic statements...this American here hopes you keep quiet, because you're an embarrassment.
Horrible, thoughtless, reckless, and enormously ignorant comment by Jesse Jackson, if he did say that about Sen. Obama.

What is acting white, exactly? Being educated, Jesse?

If Jesse Jackson did say this, I would lose much respect for him, but i do know that to say that Jesse Jackson is simply supporting Obama b/c of his skin color is border-line racist b/c it's a claim that cannot be supported by any facts.
So, I be axin' you this my brother.  Do we be actin' blak if we vote for Hillary 'cause OJ say so?  I tell you one thing, Rev. JJ only care about one thing and that be JJ.  Word
What does Jessie have against white people?? He sounds racist to me. Is there a white lawyer that would take this on, after all with comments like that he should have his reverandship revoked. God does not discriminate.
Guess what I am going to do?  Unlike most of you people on here, I am going to admit that I was wrong!  Let that be a lesson to you all - it's okay to admit you didn't know something!

I had never heard of what was going on in Jena before today.  It was not reported on my local news, and I did not see it on MSNBC.com - if it was covered here, it was never in a very obvious place, considering I spend quite a bit of time poking around the site each day.  At any rate, I had no idea what was going on until I read this, and yes, I should have done some research before making my post.

However, Hal...on the contrary, I often know what I am talking about.  This is an exception, rather than the rule.  But at least I can make a statement without insulting someone.  Can you?  Doubtful.

Erik - I support the Democratic party.  Period.  I will support whichever candidate the people who belong to the Democratic party select as their nominee.  Period.  I have my favorites now, as many people do.  However, no one has completely won me over at this point.

Lewis - If you read what I said, I did say that it disgusted me that I had not seen it mentioned by any of the candidates.  Obviously, it has not been widely reported on in the area of the country in which I live.

Dee - Why exactly do black colleges need to be funded?  And where can people who go to colleges that are not designated as "black" or "white" go to get their schools funded?  I'd like it if the college I went to was funded so that my tuition would not have gone up nearly 20% a year for 3 years in row.
I used to live in IL back when a race riot insued in Champaign IL. The blacks started it and I was more than proven. Then Jesse decided to make a big deal out of the whole mess and was then run out of town almost immediatly. Never the less Jesse Jackson is a biggit and always will be. The only racist here is Jesse himself
I am not and was never a fan of Jesse or the other one Sharpton. I honestly believe if Dr.Martin Luther King could speak today, he would be disgusted by these two persons. He would be shamed that he was a friend of them.

Instead of working to realize MLK's dream, these two have become instrumental in bringing down the stature of the black community.

Discrimination against blacks might be at a historic low, but the quality of the black community is equally low. I blame these two gentlemen without any remorse
In a changing world, it's good to know some things can be counted on--like Jesse Jackson inserting race into every issue.
I cannot stand Jessie Jackson.  He is a walking contradiction.  How can someone who has worked their whole life to break down the barriers of racism be so racist?  "Obama is acting white".  Please Rv. Jackson, exactly how is it that white people act?  It is people like Rv. Jessie Jackson why racism still exists in our country.  He is the first person to jump on the opportunity to defend ANYONE of his own race.  I mean hello, look at Michael Vick.  That wasn't a case of race.  He was involved in dog fighting.  How cruel and inhumane is that?  I don't care if your orange w/ purple poke-a-dots; IT'S ILLEGAL.  And has anyone mentioned anything about the kid who got his @ss kicked by those 6 boys?  I don't know if he had anything to do w/ the noose incident a few months ago, but resorting to violence is not the answer, but ok by Rv. Jackson.
It absolutely angers me that somebody can be as openly racist as Jesse Jackson and claim to stand for human rights. I understand that he does great things for his people, but supporting a candidate because of their race cheapens the support.
The fact of the matter is that if Mr. Obama wants to be President he is going to have to appeal to the masses.  And if he is seen as someone who is trying to promote the issues of one particular ethnicity, in particular black folk issues, over those of another he will be severly criticized.  He must be diplomatic and diplomatic does not mean being "white". It means not cowtowing to an ethnicity because you want its endorsement.  It means promoting the interests of the common cause(s) for all people of color, any color - be white, black, yellow, or red.  Please, people, can we give the man a break.  When a white person runs for President we don't accuse him/her of being too white or promoting the interests of whites only.  Let's be fair.
Ask most black Americans and they will tell you that the Rev. Jesse Jackson does not speak for them and they do not look at him as their leader...in fact, there are no black leaders today...so when Jesse Jackson says that Mr. Obama is acting white...who cares? I certainly do not, as a black woman...I also no longer rely on the media to gather my information on Barack...I perform my own independent investigation on the candidates because each media outlet has their own candidates that they want to push up or push down...the days of reporting news on the candidates that is fair is long over!
It appears that Jesse Jackson is a reverse racist.  I'm shocked!  I'd be ashamed to say this man like his buddy Al Sharpton represents the best interests of the black community.  They are simply proliferating racism in America because if it were gone they'd be out of a job.
If his statements were true it would give validity to the following points of view.. http://kevinmccullough.townhall.com/g/19a99acc-7b33-4e7b-81e1-2aa130d991be
heh RH Oregon. Ignorance is indeed bliss. Another stark reason America is destined to lose another war. Policing the world to strategically gain access to resources is a recipe for disaster. Believe it, this country that was once a fresh fruit, has begun to stink. We're fat, we waste, we lie, we cheat, we backstab, we gloat, we kill, we are jealous, power hungry assholes who think we're God's gift to the planet even though we cause the most pollution per individual. Live in fear, listen to Big Brother, obey your new channels, automatically dismiss truth for fallacy because the alternative requires effort and change. Fund terrorists better by driving alone in your V8 Hummer. Stay lazy my friend, at least in your reality you're still enveloped in a freedom as long as you agree with the rest of the cut-to-fit. Because hyena-laughing while pointing to France is going to solve our problems.

OT: The most intelligent often do not win election because smarts are not required to hold the most powerful position in the world. We have evidence of that for the last 6 years +. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

JJ is eating his words, big deal. A has-been who can barely muster up a following is revising his previous statement that he doesn't even recall.
Obama will unify this country. He will be an advocate for the common man/woman, more so than any candidate, Republican or Democrat, running for the Office of Presidency.  The fact that he is not a Washington insider is all the more reason to vote for him. J. Jackson is divisive and sees all issues as black/white. Obama has vision to see issues in terms of justice, not color.  It's great to see this political conversation taking place across the country. I would encourage any of you to read Obama's most recent book, The Audacity of Hope. I follow the candidates closely, and I see no other candidate with the wisdom, integrity, and articulation that Obama possesses. Vote from your head and heart, not your skin color or gender.
Jesse and Barack!

Ebony and Ivory, living together in harmony.
As an educated black man I was infuriated to hear of Jesse Jackson's comments.  This is what keeps us (black people) apart.  There is a unspoken divide already between the "the well off" blacks and the blacks in poverty.  If we're eductated and speak proper english that is considered acting white.  I heard it all my life.  IT IS WRONG!! and one of our so called leaders in Jesse Jackson just widened the divide.  In my opinion Jesse Jackson is a little jealous of Obama.  Here is a man that actually has a chance at the white house.  Where as Jesse ran and had no chance.  He can't stand to see someone else in our race achieving.  It's a shame.  Mr. Obama brings hope not only to blacks but to whites also in the current political climate.  I feel no need for Obama to bee outspoken on racial issues.  It's actions. ..and he has shown to be a man of action.  Change comes from within. Let the man get elected and I have no doupt that he will not only do right by blacks and whites...but all AMERICANS.
Statements re. Sen. Obama's 'blackness' are rascist.  Dr. King dream speaks of people being judged by their character, not their color.  That's my dream, too.
RE. Jena.  I from the Central LA area , approx. 45 min. from Jena.  What I'm not seeing in the national media is more back story research.  There has been racial tit-for-tat going on some time.  The Jena 6 incident is just the last incident.  The time for which race is a victim and which is the victimizer has passed.  There's blame enough for all.  I also haven't seen any mention of the meetings that local clergy held, praying for peace.
You may not think I understand.  After I am a white, Southern male.  For what it's worth, I am liberal with a biracial child.  What I'm really interested in is justice...for all.
Jackson = race pimp.  It's a career for him.
His "support" certainly does obama no good.
Well said, Dee Ann Roberts.  Well said.

The notion of Obama not being black enough, or now it's "too white", is ridiculous.  I thought we'd put this bigoted nonsense behind us already.  Unfortunate that it's dug back by an alleged black leader, of all people.
Run Jesse run -- and don't come back.  When I heard about Jackson's statement the first thing that popped into my head was Imus. Jackson needs to get the same treatment, be de-frocked and get a radio show somewhere double-teaming with Imus, so I can turn the program off!!
I am a white person who is so non-racist-really, my best friend is black, and my husband is mixed. We speak openly about the racial divide. The problem I have with Jesse is that he seems to only care about black people, no matter if it is obviously not a race issue. I do commend him on his determination on the fight for his race though, and when there is indeed an injustice to his race. I am going to throw something out there: What if white people had a White's only award show, or how about The White College Fund? Why is he okay with this this? I think he is racial-blatantly.
Jackson must have graduated from the Isaiah Thomas School Of Racial Comparisons.[or vice versa]
