Jackson reaffirms support for Obama

Posted: Wednesday, September 19, 2007 2:03 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan

The Obama campaign just forwarded us a statement from Jesse Jackson, who reiterated his support for Obama, despite being quoted by the Columbia State saying that Obama is "acting like he's white" for not speaking more forcefully regarding the racial incident in Jena, LA.

"I reaffirm my commitment to vote for Sen. Barack Obama," Jackson says in the statement. "He has remarkably transcended race, however the impact of Katrina and Jena makes America's unresolved moral dilemma of race unavoidable. I think Jena is another defining moment of the issue of race and the criminal justice system. This issue requires direct and bold leadership. I commend Sen. Obama for speaking out and demanding fairness on this defining issue. Any attempt to dilute my support for Sen. Obama will not succeed."

Jesse is acting out the worst steroetype black people have.  The old crab in a bucket theory....As one tries to climb out of the bucket another one reaches up and grabs him back down"  With Jesse's support who needs an enemy.

Jesse, unfortunately you are acting to black.
If you want the best information about the ongoing news in Jena, please refer to The Town Talk http://www.thetowntalk.com or The Jena Times http://www.thejenatimes.net.  The MSM has done nothing but butcher the facts.
Jesse Jackson should just keep his mouth shut if he really wants Obama to win.  Any candidate backed by a racist of any color is severely limited in his chances.
Hillary has been fighting for middle-class issues since she defied her Republican parents in the late 60's, early 70's.  I believe she is a committed person with a good head on her shoulders.  She has done extremely well in debates...better than anyone else (Repub. or Democ.), and that is when I decided to vote for her.   Come on guys, Edwards had one of the worst voting records (did not vote) in the senate, and Barack is just to wet behind the ears to manage this country right now.  We could do a lot worse than the 8 (count it...EIGHT) prosperous years of Bill Clinton.  She would be the first female president...and, the best woMAN for the job in these tough times.
The issue of skin color runs deep in this country, there is no denying it because it contiually comes to the surface as a hot button issue.  We as a country need to seriously continue to work on the issue, but nothing gets done or will get done if we continue to bring it up as a wedge issue repeatedly.  Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are part of the problem, not part of the solution.  They are yesterday.   And I don't know what became of their pledge to do something after Imus about rap and hate lyrics.
Carrie... the argument for funding black and Hispanic colleges is simply because white colleges are. The only difference is, the white schools are called state colleges & universities and given names like Rutgers, UCLA, or Iowa State.   So unless you're in a private school...you're college is getting just as much (probably more if you've got a research facility) government funding as the black schools.

Also, if you actually want to, you can attend an HBCU -- and be surrounded by people that don't look like you or have a common upbringing. Think about that for a sec before asking: Well why do blacks and Hispanics need their own schools? And suggesting that they just go to yours, mkay.

Lastly, the funding is for facilities and salaries (just like white schools get), and the tuition goes up at HBCUs every year, just like yours.
People please don't put Al Sharpton in the same category with Jessie Jackson.

I have voted in every city, state and national election since the age of 18.  However, if Hillary gets the Democratic nomination I will leave the presidential section blank.  She is a panderer and I don't trust her as far as I can see her.

Obama is the best candidate for ALL AMERICANS based on his voting record and his views of the issues. With Obama, what you see and hear is what you get.

The democratic party as a whole is pathetic. They better wake up.  The republicans always have a wild card. Last time around it was morals-gay marriage and abortion.

This time it is going to be immigration.  I was raised never to vote for a republican. However, if Democrats don't change their views on immigration, I will. No amnesty, militarize the border, criminalize being in America illegally and deportation!

As a black and mexican American I feel that the only way America is going to resolve the war on drugs, improve the quality of schools, and improve our healthcare system (to name a few)is to recognize the true impact of illegal immigrants to our economy and society.

I personally understand everyone's humanatarian views on the issue, however, the American Government's responsibility is FIRST to American citizens. Get things in order for your citizens and country first and then maybe you will be in the position to help the world. Until then, do what you were elected to do for US citizens.
Why does Jesse Jackson accuse white people of being racist if he himself is the one making comments on skin color? What does it matter anyway, white or black its the goals each candidate wants to meet that matter...
I stopped caring about Jesse Jackson's views in January 1984, when he offended Jews everywhere by  refering to them as "Hymies" and to New York as "Hymietown."  http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/frenzy/jackson.htm.

Jackson's articulation of collective Black solipsism has always been intellectually puerile.  Had he been white and called Oakland, California "Coontown," his views would gone the way of Al Campanis.  And, since we're on the topic of blind advocacy-for-Blacks-is-never-a-vice, when will the Reverend Al Sharpton apologize for his irresponsible remarks about the Duke lacrosse players? What is astounding to me is why anyone pays attention to these egotistical, self-anointed saviors who have neither the character nor the grace of Martin Luther King.

I think Jessie needs shut up and held accountable for his comments and actions as well as all political candidates should be held accountable for the mess they have us in! You can't blame it all on Bush. The media needs to be accountable too, but you won't hear anything from them will you?
Aside from several other things which could be considered, Mr jackson lost credibility when he came out on the side of "EBONICS" as viable.  If there is ever a list with the names of people who don't find him particularly credible, I want mine near the very top.  Mr Jackson quiet often comes down on the wrong side of an issue.  I am a very proud black woman, and I say without any hesitation that I am sick and tired of every time something involves blacks, the race card is played.  Most of us aRE familiar that old saying, "If you're white, you're right".  Well, just as there was no justification in that statement and that attitude, there is no justification for the attitude that if you're black you're right.  Everytime race is used to try to justify a wrong, it has the potential to hamper the just outcome OF a situation wherein a person really has been the victim of racism.  Jesse Jackson's motive now, and for a very long time (perhaps always?) is self-serving.  Obama, don't let him influence you.  Jesse needs to go somewhere, sit down, and shut up-talking out of both sides of his face.  He's not for a rainbow.  He's all about him.  If nothing else is taken into consideration, we should all remember his position on EBONICS!!!    He doesn't even realize that the covers were snatched off of him a long time ago. he needs to GO AWAY!
Jesse Jackson is a black bigot, his words on Obama acting white demonstrates that. He is the single biggest hurdle in the path of African American progress. All the Hispanics protest about is rights on being able to work and live in the US, just like anyone else. Jackson's crusade for Blacks has always revolved around creating fear of the white man, and of encouraging blacks to fight for racist quotas such as affirmative action. The Latin and black communities clearly seem to have 2 different visions. There is really no bigger danger to blacks' progress than Jesse Jackson, and that population should be very wary, as Hispanics have slowly displaced them in quantity and have advanced ahead with minimal complaint.
I have taken the time to to review all of the previous statements, and am very appalled at the lack of insight, intelligence and wit that the majority of America chooses to employ in their daily rants.  As a member in a South Carolina family who's roots are more vast in the south than a cypress tree in in the swamps, I have viewed racism/bigotry in many ways.  I have seen the decline and eradication of the Native American throughout history.  I have seen the uprising of minorities to great stature by the leadership of people who dared to tread unchartered waters, only to witness their demise in traps, set forth by brethern of their same color.  I have seen the plight of women who have been forced to "equality", completely give up on family life in search for that glass ceiling to sue over.  I also have seen the "Great Satan"  aka...the white man, held to accountability for situations and circumstances, from which they are 6 generations removed.  Not to mention the internment of American-Oriental's during WWII.  All in all, the rascism, bigotry, and corruptness of the America we all know, will continue until the day comes that we stop using it as an excuse for EVERYTHING!!!!  Until that day comes America will never be free.  We must look unto Christ for the answers; not the president, or congress, or political consultants...just Christ.  Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.  Have a blessed day!
Thank you, Billy from Philly.  Although I can't speak to Rev. Jackson's motives, I agree that his divisive remarks about Obama are harmful, and in fact can harm both of them.  As for whether he really said what he's quoted as saying, I don't know, but I remember helping his campaign in 1974, right up until he called New York City "Hymie-town."
I don't know about anyone else, but I've come to find Jesse Jackson to be one of the biggest most popular racist of our time! Unfortunately in Jena bad things happened. Unfortunately a bunch of black guys beat up a white guy, and Jesse Jackson wants them to walk free. Where is the justice there? Why isn't the media perorting about how this guy that got beat up is doing? Why don't we know what he is thinking? What about his family? No, the media is wrapped up in this hate and big actions and mouth of Jesse Jackson. This man will not ever see what he is, because he has used his racism to make himself a name.
As for Obama, it's hard not to respect a respectable man. That's the difference. Obama has not made this election a race-war, so what I don't understand is why he would let Jesse Jackson say anything at all. If anything it will just hurt his campaign
The first thing that popped in my head when I heard was Jesse is a Jackazz.  I've never much though of him or Rev Al as our leaders.  I look to Cornel West and The Honorable Minister Farakhan as my leaders.  Two people who are not afraid to speak their minds and try to wake us up and make us accountable for our own actions.  Mr. Obama was the first candidate who mentioned the Jena case.  If he focuses on this one issue his mass appeal and electibility(sp?) goes down the drain. The same way Rev Jackazz' did when he ran for president back in the 80s.  Hellary only made such a strong statement because she was speaking to the NAACP after weeks of being invited to talk about it on various black radio shows.  She, like her husband will make blacks feel comfortable but we will never see her in the black community or even in our corner after she's elected by the overtrusting black voters.  I was diappointed in Magic for throwing her that fundraiser.  I am impressed with Mr. Obama, Mr. McCain, Mr. Huckabee, and Mr. Kuchinak(sp?).  Mr. Thompson would probably also be a viable candidate.  Regardless of the fact anyone but Mr. Obama would do the same, forget about the black community once elected.  Antics like this by Rev Jackazz is why our people haven't been able to even get close to the white house, even as vice-president.  One of us tries to get ahead and there is always a field negroe ready to pull us back or throw a monkey wrench in the game so massa will pat him on the head.  Come on everybody, black, white, yellow and everything in between lets get Mr. Obama in the White House in 08.
To Carrie,

The reason black universities/colleges need to be funded because they don't have the boosters and wealthy alumni to donate money.  Plus those big schools with televised sports programs receive money from different corporations.  Since all black colleges and universities are private and don't receive funding they have to charge outrageous tuitions; I know from experience, I went to Virginia State University for a year but couldn't afford to stay.  And this isn't the first dumb remark Rev Jackazz has made: anybody remember about himeytown?
Oh, goodness I now see what happens when people don't look beyond what is in front of their face. People saying Obama should have, OBAMA DID come out and speak against it but his statements didn't get that much media coverage that is why people don't know. Don't believe the hype.
Um...of course my school is getting government funding.  It is a STATE school.

Ted, keep in mind what you said about not wanting to go to a school where everyone is different than you. That is a choice that people make.  It's a matter of priorities - is getting an education more important, or being surrounded by people like you more important?  It may be a bad choice to have to make, and it may not be fair, but life isn't fair.

But just an FYI - in the real world, you kinda have to deal with people who are not just like you.
The so called remarks were not in his speech or recorded on tape.  Why would Jesse who is backing Obama and serve as advisor say such a thing.  I don't think he did.  I find it suspicious that HRC suddenly announced appearances on prominant black radio and tv shows this week (ie. Al Sharpton' radio show).  I think that HRC is losing their grip, their sudden interest in SC schools and a donation is an effort to buy their votes. They are losing ground since a majority of SC elected officals have come out and endorsed Obama.  Now, I think HRC has reverted to dirty tricks and triangluation.  I wonder if someone close to the Slate newspaper is involved with the HRC campaign?
Jesse Jackson is out to put himself in the spotlight, that is all, nothing else.  Personally, I'd have problems with any candidate that accepted his support with open arms.

For the person that said they vote for a Democrat no matter what.  Does this actually make you someone that is supposed to be intelligent?  I'm just curious, I would really think that the intelligent person would look at all the candidates, Dem, Rep, or Indie and make their decision based on who was best for the job, not just because they are of a particular party.

Actually when you think about it, if you voted for a candidate simply because of their race, that shows lack of intelligence as well.
you stupid people . Know about a case before you talk . the white kids beat up a black kid as well with no penalty . then the white kid pulled a shot gun and got it taken away  and his but whooped . does that sound like attemp murder to you .  and for you dumd asses that say if it were the other way around , have you herd of the black retarted kid that a party  full  of white kids beat  and know the kid cant even talk . What happen to them kids Yea NOTHING . SO ALL YOU RACIST CLOWNS DO YOUR HOMEWORK OR SHUT UP .
For a supposed man of God as Jesse Jackson professes to be, it is quite apparant that he has not learned the teachings of the Bible.  Mr. Jackson, you are a racist and the reason why the race issue is not getting any better in this country is because of leaders? like you and Al Sharpton that continously promote racism in your speaches and teachings.  There will always be racism in this world as long as man exists.  It is the nature of the species.  And whether it is against blacks, jews, gay people, muslims or whatever race or creed, even against white people, all you can do is try to change the wrong way in a positive way through correct teachings.  But the continuous derogatory slams will not get this world any closer.  And for that I am ashamed of you Jesse.  You are not a man of God but a pathetic man trying to make a name for himself.
Obama is half white...thus he cannot help if he acts white or black...stereotypical stupidity when a smart educated man of color carries himself well and respectfully...he has to be bashed by his black peers....shame on them...he certainly should embrace both cultures of his ancestry.
Jesse Jackson is only good fro reading Dr. Suess on Saturday Night Live.
If Jesse really cared about blacks he would have taken the bullet for Martin.
The most ignorant racial term I have ever heard of is African American = colored/black. First of all, there are more races/shades of color than "black" coming from Africa. Secondly, any American can claim african american heritage if they trace their lineage back to the very first man & woman ever - who, according to science, lived in Africa. Third, I am black and come from Barbados. It is insulting that I have to select African American as a blanket term for my skin tone even though I have no african heritage in that sense. The latter is certainly thanks to Jesse and his efforts to continue to perpetuate the great divide.
Why is Obama held to this standard of answering every racial issue in this country or proving his blackness. Isn't it fair  to say that Hilary Clinton more than any other canidate should have to answer these questions since she's currently polling about 60% favorable amongst black women?
I find Reverand Jackson's comment regarding Sen Obama to be bigotry of the worst kind. The notion that one has to be black enough or is too white just demonstrates why America can't seem to get beyond race as a subject. I look forward to the day when I can leave this country and live in a country where one's color has nothing to do with the quality of the words or ideas being expressed or their acceptance. I'm afraid the Reverand has a long way to go before he can be viewed as an educated person and I think his time spent with the late Reverand Martin Luther King to be a wasted opportunity for his enlightenment. If anything is to learned from this it is that the Reverand himself needs to transcend race if he has any hope of being effective as a leader of black, or for that matter, any Americans.
As an African American man, Mr. Jackson offends me on many different levels. Yes sir Mr. Jackson..I am sure you would have "been all over Jena". You are everywhere a camera is. You are an icon in your own mind. You have never been a part of a single piece of legislation in this country. You have never held an office. You are a "reverend" that has never had a church. It is sad that when an educated, humble, energetic, african american "difference maker" steps into the lime light..the "good Dr. Reverend" feels the need to express his inadequacies and jealousy in his 2007 version of "I have a dream". I shouldnt have to tell a "foremost expert on racial equality" this...but black is something you are, not something you "try to achieve". Stop kicking your leg out to "trip up" a man who has fought the same struggles that you claim to fight. Maybe if Mr. Obama got on a private helicopter to the Hugo Chavez compound for Mojitos...he would be "black enough"...?
