Rudy's speech to the NRA

Posted: Friday, September 21, 2007 12:44 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Andy Merten
Giuliani, who in the past has advocated gun control, was cordially received by the NRA today, centering his remarks on his now-familiar mantra -- borrowed from Ronald Reagan -- that "If you're my 80 percent friend, you're not my 20 percent enemy." He continued to channel from the former president, asserting that Reagan's "Peace through Strength" applies to law enforcement at home. "We need to step up enforcement against gun crimes and leave law-abiding citizens alone," he said, adding to heavy applause, "Time spent focusing on law-abiding, legal gun owners is time taken away from arresting and prosecuting the criminals who use guns."

The GOP presidential front-runner made a pointed effort to present himself as a honest leader who will be upfront about any disagreements he may have with a constituency. "I think there's a certain value in knowing what you agree with and what you disagree with someone about." He concluded his speech, "I would love to have your support in the future, but mostly, I would like us to respect each other."

Giuliani got his best reception when he digressed from the topic of gun control and revisited his recent feud with MoveOn. "We passed a line that we should not allow any American political organization to pass," he said, decrying the decision of 24 Democratic senators -- including Hillary Clinton -- to vote against yesterday's resolution to shame the anti-war group for its ad attacking General Petraeus.

The former New York mayor was also able to muster several chuckles from the audience when his cell phone rang mid-speech and he took a call from his wife. Whether this was scripted or not (the campaign later told NBC News that it was indeed Judith calling, but we've seen this happen several times in the past), the crowd seemed to enjoy the candid small talk and applauded when he concluded the conversation with a loving goodbye.

Well, Rudy, some people really don't give a damn about joining any bandwagons... especially ones as moronic as this Senate 'resolution'. Suck it up and get over it.

Thank God there are some people in Congress who aren't comatose sheep.
"We passed a line that we should not allow any American political organization to pass"... you mean like the 'Swift Boat' attacks on John Kerry, Rudy?  Are you advocating less of the First Amendment along with less of the Second?

More GOP cherry-picking that's not going to fool anyone (or, maybe, that didn't fool anyone according to the latest polls).
Want to get away?
Wow FirstRead, that was anticlimatic.  This moment of monumental proportions was built up and nothing too much occurred.  I actually have to give R. Giuliani props on this one.  It sounds like he addressed the NRA crowd rather well.
Jesus-- the Rudy and Judy Show is cheesier than "Back to You" on Fox.
Like his wife didn't know he was in the middle of giving a speech...geez.  Of couse, Judith knows Rudy has priors for not telling his wife the truth about where he is going to be at any given moment.  Hey, maybe the call was ligitimate :)
The NRA doesn't need guns, Rudy !!

Just promise free Viagra for life and a Swedish Penis Enlarger for each NRA member !!
That'll do the trick !!

Hopefully, these brave Aryans will be able to 'rise to the occasion' from now on !!

Maybe they'll stop marrying their sisters and try marrying their cousins !!
But Reagan didn't wear a dress or move in with homosexual couple.  Rudy is 180 degree from Reagan.
Why are we afraid of Rudy wearing our dress?  Don't we support GLTB?  And why do we continue to bring up the Swift Boat stuff - that was true!
We must stop Rudy from getting the truth out!  If we don't stop free speech everyone will find out just how foolish the Progressive movement is.  We must call them more names and condem their dress!
I think the Giuliani '08 campaign is in trouble. He's spent two weeks talking about virtually noting but this damn add. Last I checked, MoveOn will not be on the Democratic ticket. Yes, they contribute money to Democrats. But for every MoveOn, there is an equally bad Republican version.

I'm sick of this ad and I'm quickly becoming sick of Giuliani. Check that - I was sick of Giuliani long ago.
Only the diehard consumers of GOP propaganda are responding positively to this moveon controversy.  The majority of Americans are only hearing that the Republicans can't stop complaining about a WEB SITE; it's just one more example of the Republicans not realizing how their comments are only appealing to the already indoctrinated, and making them look like laughingstocks to everyone else.
Rudy got the formula, the same formula that Bush used for his successful govener races back in Texas and his two presidential races: Support NRA or gun right, Anti-Abortion, War to spend and guarding oil, scare people to dead with terror threats, negative ad on his opponents.

You got it, Rudy! but you look like a monkey!
Rudy, these people sound scared.  You can tell by their childlike name calling; also known as Progressive Speak.  Is this the best you can do - I think Yes.
SIERRA, SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT YOUR OWN FAMILY. MARRY YOUR BROTHER OR SOMETHING? BITTER ABOUT BEING INBRED? ALL GUN CARRIERS ARE NOT STUPID LIKE YOU AND DO NOT NEED TO MAKE RACIST REMARKS ABOUT SOMETHING THEY KNOW NOTHING OF!
Glad to see Rudy has come to his senses. I guess it was just the New Yorkers with guns that were scary. Oh, by the way, will you people stop it with the "war for oil" thing, Canada is & has always been the #1 crude oil & petroleum supplier to the U.S.-Iraq is the seventh-quit repeating urban legends like puppets. Canada is CONNECTED to us, if we were hell bent on invasion for oil we would have taken them over a LONG time ago.
Isn't it amazing how a politicians views change when it's election time. Rudy is nothing but a phony who changes according to the crowd. Like a chameleon. Same old Rudy. Different hairdo.
The NRA stands for Freedom.
Cheesy republicans with there wifes calling. SOOOO not as cool as in a greezey spoon with their cigar smoking husbands. Lets just elect rosie then jump off a bridge.
sierra,sf  wow that was good. Kind of like an old David Duke speech. How there are lower races and groups that are just inferior. A little off base for open minded, pc person like your self. You are sounding more and more like the mindless sheep following the lead of a political hack you usually point out.
Giuliani is a left-wing facist like all the other Democrats. He jumped over to the Republican party, several years back, because he knew he couldn't get nominated in that pathetic mindless heap.

I think it was a Democrat Party plot. By making Giuliani jump to the Republican Party, the left-wing is sure to get their ilk elected. Hilary or Rudy; there's no difference at all.

Now he tries to pawn himself off as a Republican. Down South they have a saying, "you can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy".

Rudy, you can no more change your left-wing sleazy beliefs than a leopard can change its spots. You are a fraud and a liar.

Go sell your virtues and leadership to your children. Oh wait. They already know what a fraud you are. You are not electable.
Although I certainly think his wife calling in the middle of a speech is cheesy (turn your phone off for Pete's sake), I like the fact that he admitted that the NRA and he had differences.  But anymore when Hillary and Rudy talk I hear political platform babble and not really a sincere desire to lead this country with an independent thinking process.  They both speak to the will of the political party not the peope...  :'(
Exactly, Robert. Should we call Rudy a flip-flopper now? MoveOn, please create a swift boat something ad for Rudy!
This just in:
Not wanting to be upstaged by Hilary Clinton, Rudy Giuliani confesses before the NRA, "I am not a lesbian, either. And here's my picture of Bill Clinton in my breast pocket to proove it".
"NRAchick,Louisville,KY",

You know Canada is your puppy on the north, why don't you make an example on your south, like Venezuela? By the way, North Korea is one of the so called "Axis Evil" as well, why not making a war out of it?
Sierrasf   You know nothing about the NRA ! we are lawyers, policemen, bankers, milkmen, bloggers, doctors, dentists,HOUSEWIVES, students, professionals, amateurs, just your everyday AMERICANS. YOU need to read the NRA"S publications so you stop sounding like the complete IDIOT that you ARE !! You may someday hope one of us is around to protect YOUR miserable LIFE, which we would do in a heart beat, even though you would deny that right. Get a life !!

Funny, a liberal using negative stereotypes to engender all NRA members.  You're absolutely right.  In fact it describes me quite well.  I'm an asian, gun owninging, freedom loving individual, who is currently enrolled in graduate school.  Yup you basically described me to a T.

I think you need to do a little reading of American history to understand why the Bill of Rights was created.  But then again, I have a feeling these words are falling on deaf ears.

If the republican party is foolish enough to choose Rudy, we're doomed.  It's either Ron Paul (1st choice) or Fred Thompson.  I can only hope that primary voters are smart enough to realize that both Romney and Rudy are liars saying anything to appeal to voters.

And a second comment, MSNBC supposedly approves these before appearing.  I guess we know where their slant lies.

The Guliani Principle: "Got Money? I will tell you everything you want to hear" Just cannot trust a guy without principles. Want somebody to tell you what you want to hear but doesn't really mean it? You got your man.....Rudy. Yes, he is a facist too.
As it was once said, "You want the truth, You can't handle the truth"! I can't believe what my eyes are
telling me... Take off your rose colored glasses and get serious about the United States instead of your own agendas!
There seems to be a false belief that only whites are 2nd Amendment supporters. Minorities also like the peace of mind that a gun gives them if their home is ever broke into. Nothing is more frightening then being helpless! Police usually arrive when it is too late!                 Joseph Anthony
Woos, I am sincerely sorry for the word "puppy" in my comments. It is my bad. My point is that Canada is always an ally with U.S.
Thank you, Mr. Giuliani.  Here in NW Ohio, the singlemost issue that has caused a great deal of concern and the inclination to not support you was the fear of absolute gun control.  We have many avid hunters here and a need to harvest our many deer, etc.  I, myself, have been needing to hear this from you in order to make a decision regarding support of a candidate.  If what you are saying is true, you have my vote and probably that of each adult in my family.  We respect and embrace your proposals for fiscal spending and accountability.  However,we would like to hear more support from you for the war effort.  Contrary to liberal belief that many equate with census bureau data or something of that nature, not everyone is opposed to this war and the mission thereto.  We are just much more mature and not as inclined to run our mouths!  Keep considering thoughts and advice from your prospective voters!  You are on the right track to electability.
McCAIN
Wow do the roaches really come out when the lights go off.   I especially like Sierra.   She evidently has no idea about what the second amendment does for her.   That is why she is able to say pour the garbage out of her mouth like she does.   I am from kentucky, Oh my God he is one of those Hillbillies.   No I am a decendant of a man who forght in the Revolutionary War and was paid in land for his trouble.   In short you wench I am grandfathered in.   I am a disabled Vet as well.  I say this, politics are at best a compromise.   rudy rose to the occassion and saw the light.   But for the record fundamental Liberties are untouchable by Interests or Majorities.   Uneducated and slurring comments based upon appeals to emotion and popular sentiment have no place in reasonable speech or discussion.
Rudy is a phony reader, he changed 360 degree just to get support from the far right wing. you should stand by your past comment since that is your record. It is too early to start running away from your record remember it took you long time to build .
Lots of blather about an ad (that I haven't seen, and don't care) and yet I can't remember all of these patriots and good Americans saying anything at all about the garbage put out about Max Cleland or John Kerry, nor anyone ever saying anything about the illustrious Ann Coulter suggesting that "fragging" would be a good idea.  I guess it's all relative.
it's a  shame  too see rudy runin for the overal office   please rudy look at what u did  too u kids  your wife  u show know  respect too your family how  can u show  we the american people  respect usin  911 at  your scape goat but  i know one thing that  thee american prople are not alseept
Sierra, SF, your ignorance is really showing. First, go read the Second Amendment, b/c you are obviously woefully unfamiliar w/it. Second, I am a card carrying member of the NRA, and I am anything but Aryan--dark hair, dark eyes, dark complected; even spent 20 years in the AMERICAN Army protecting the rights of ignorant people like you to spew their poison. Oh--my wife and I are not even distantly related. Now who's the bigot?
I FOR ONE DON'T REALLY CARE FOR ALL THE POLITICKING WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY VERY IMPORTANT ISSUES THAT REQUIRE SERIOUS ATTENTION  WHERE IS ACADEMIA ? WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR RESPONSIBLE ADULTS? MAN WE HAVE SOLD OUT ... THE QUESTION IS AS PUT BY AYAN RAND WHO IS JOHN GALT
Giuliani has been in politics since his term as DA of New York. One great drug bust and he has been a politician ever since. So long he probably believes what he is saying. His ex-wives and New Yorkers know how well he has done with their affairs. Why would he do better with the entire countries affairs?
Whatever his reasons for supporting the second amendment.I am reasonable certian 9/11 taught him a very good lesson in the anti-gun stupidity of the rose O's.I know alot former anti-gun activist who now supports the NRA and the second amendment.
The real question to ask is "What would I do to protect my family in extremely dangerous situations".History will be the judge of how well he does as president.Hilary shot a huge hole in her bid by the politics that cost john kerry his bid for president.

Rudy is a blip on the radar screen for black holes!
i dont understand how my guns, currently locked up in a safe, and one on my hip) are hurting anyone? why must you liberal whiners always whine about guns? how about stopping the CRIMINALS, not the legal owners. we already have too many illegal gun control laws(the 34' NFA act, the 86' machine gun ban) to name 2. guns dont kill people, people kill people. i could kill someone with a pencil, or anything sharp for that matter. does that mean we should ban everything sharp? awsome logic libtards.
The Second Amendment is far more important to me than any other issue.  Without the Second Amendment the rest of the Amendments are simply sitting ducks.  Giuliani can say what he wants, but his track record is totally the opposite.  I am definitely going with Fred Thompson.
Hey sienna in SF, I find it hilarious that you accuse us NRA members and southerners of being aryan bigots. You words define the very nmeaning of being a bigot. The thing that I find even more funny is the fact that people dont take seriously that I, and people like me will FIGHT to keep are guns, even if it means taking up arms against the US government (something I hope will never have to happen). That is the reason for the 2nd amendment, to gaurd our freedom. I hope you realize "from my cold dead fingers" is not an empty statement. Also, I am not married to my sister or my cousin and I do not have blue eyes and blond hair.
