Rudy wins over few NRA converts

Posted: Friday, September 21, 2007 4:13 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger
Giuliani told the National Rifle Association much of what they wanted to hear Friday about his support for Second Amendment rights, but he left the conference with few converts. “I think he is sincere. I just don’t know if he truly believes it down deep inside,” said Thomas Crum, a retired trucking executive from Scottsdale, AZ. “I have a little difference with him just beginning to realize what his position really is.”

Most members of the gun lobby who attended Friday’s “A Celebration of American Values” conference said they were encouraged by Giuliani’s appearance and what he said about support for gun rights. But most also said they were concerned about his track record supporting gun control as mayor of New York City, and favored other candidates in the Republican presidential primary.

Bob Bell, a salesman from Clarkesville, MD, said he respected Giuliani’s leadership during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, but preferred Thompson, a longtime supporter of Second Amendment rights. Bell said Giuliani’s mayoral record -- including his advocacy for the assault weapons ban and lawsuits against gun manufacturers -- weighed heavy on him. “He was a mayor of New York City, and try and get a gun permit up there,” he said.

To garner his support, Bell said, Giuliani would have needed to espouse the right to carry weapons and make a retraction for his earlier views.

Instead, Giuliani acknowledged disagreements with much of the crowd but stressed “there are a lot of things you and I have in common.” His message focused largely on enforcing current gun laws and prosecuting crimes committed with a gun, rather than new gun ownership restrictions. “The bottom line is we need to step up enforcement of gun crimes and leave law-abiding citizens alone,” Giuliani said to tepid applause.

Sitting next to Bell at lunch Friday, Joe Rogers was keeping a scorecard for each of the presidential candidates on the conference’s brochure. While some speakers had check marks, Giuliani was the only one with a zero next to his name. The Wilmington, NC salesman said even Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson scored better during his taped remarks. “I don’t think there’s anything he could have said and been truthful about to win over the crowd,” Rogers said of Giuliani. “To his credit, he spoke the truth.”

Friday’s speech to the NRA was considered an important bellwether for how the Republican front-runner would perform among some of the party’s niche groups that have opposed positions Giuliani has taken in the past.

While the NRA has never endorsed in a Republican presidential primary, officials at the lobby have left that door open this year, and are planning more forums in early primary states. NRA Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre said he liked what he heard from Giuliani. “He said a lot of things that if you’re a law-abiding American firearm owner, you’re nodding and you’re saying ‘I agree with that,’” he said.

Judy McQuitty, a bookkeeper from Virginia Beach, VA, said she felt Giuliani was one of the least effective speakers, which also featured McCain and Romney on video. “He spent more time campaigning than the others,” McQuitty said of Giuliani. “I think all of them said the proper things to get the backing of the crowd. They all know where this crowd stands.”

But others said they believed Giuliani has had a change of heart on gun control. “Things change, politicians have to change,” said Vance Perry of Richmond, VA. “Politicians who don’t change can’t grow with the situation. 9/11 changed a lot of things, obviously it changed Rudy Giuliani.”

why don't you guys cover Gov. Huckabee?
"[h]e left the conference with few converts."

Giuliani's strategy was clearly not to convert NRA members, rather not to piss them off and not to have the NRA actively campaign against him.  The real news would be that few converted to oppose Rudy G.  Basically the big news at the end of the day is that everything is the same as it was at the beginning of the day.  Please correct me if I'm wrong MSM.

P.S. Don't vote Rudy G. for President!  I don't trust him and personally doubt his integrity.
“I think he is sincere. I just don’t know if he truly believes it down deep inside,”

Reminds me of the joke about the politician who advised a colleague that sincerity was very important. If you can fake it you have it made.
Americans expecting a candidate genuinely committed to the full complement of civil liberties recognized by the Bill of Rights have one choice: Ron Paul.
"War is the continuation of politics." In this sense war is politics and war itself is a political action; since ancient times there has never been a war that did not have a political character.

"Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun."

I am a native born New Yorker, and I woulnd't vote for Rudy if he was the only candidate.  He is so anti 2AD it's scary.  If he is elected, only the police will have guns (and mace, and anything else that could be construed as a weapon).
FACT:  Giuliani = Dianne Feinstein and Chuck Schumer.

For nra to even entertain the obvious lies of Giuliani is disturbing (and is why I didn't renew my membership years ago when they suspended their pro liberty/privacy principles and endorsed "patriot act" bush).  I for one, refuse to be suckered by another political chameleon (Giuliani isn't even hiding the fact that he's changing his tune and his colors just to get the mindless support of gun owners, who for the most part KNOW BETTER).
Yep, the NRA is nothing without their assault weapons.  Gotta have 'em.  Heck, why stop there?  We'd all be a whole lot safer if we could arm everyone with howitzers and tanks and machine guns.  Just look how safe the Iraqi's are and they're armed to the teeth.
I have a problem with any candidate vying for any organizations support like the NRA or any other that is known to have lobbyist money men bying our vote out from under us !Think about that .Nothing against owning a gun as I have closet full ,but I think the constitution supports my right to own and bear one not the NRA.
BUSH SUCKS.
jeffersonian don-  how sad the way you think. without the nra out there EVERY day fighting for all of us, the anti-gun crowd would have ALREADY dismantled the 2nd amendment. Hell, they still try every DAY. JOIN the NRA and help us all to keep YOUR rights !!
Don, do you feel the same way about AARP?
R.Merrell: Guess what! It already is legal in many states to own howitzers, tanks, and machine guns! They just can't be newly manufactured and the owner undergoes a background check and pays an extra tax. I saw on TV where a person (obviously rich) just bought (and fired) a 90mm anti-tank gun designed to take out Tiger tanks in WWII! I nearly bought a fully automatic mini-14 but changed my mind because of the $14,000 price tag. In the same store, they were selling a 50 cal machine gun (M2) for about $60,000. The very fact that you didn't have a clue about this should be a hint to you that your fears are groundless! As the saying goes, ignorance is bliss!
I don't trust Giuliani. Through out his history hes been against guns, now hes for the 2nd ammend. He just don't want the NRA to go against him. My man is Fred Thompson!!
Support the right to arm bears
Why do republicans hate America????????We need to keep a running list of reasons.
NRA is an organization for the big gun lobby, not the rights of individual gun owners.  Any pro-gun group that would rate Ron Paul beneath a Democrat on gun rights obviously has a skewed agenda.
I'm no 'gun nut', but when Cheney/Blackwater come after us all, I would think being in possesion of some heavy weapons might not be a bad thing after all.
Two words RON PAUL!!!!
Who cares about Rudy and the NRA, other than the usual suspects? Why aren't we discussing the bill expanding health coverage for children that Bush is going to veto or the black kid locked up in Jena? Let's get real.
This is going to be interesting....

If nobody trusts Rudy and even more don't trust Hillary, do we have to do this all over again?
These guys eat their Wheaties with an M-16 Charging Handle.  He'll get no votes from them.
BUSH SUCKS.
Enough with the freakin NRA already. I am NOT anti-gun. I feel everyone SHOULD have the right to own one. I do NOT fee ANYONE needs assault rifles except the police and military. Anyone who needs an assault rifle to hunt must be a really bad shot if they need to fire multiple high powered rounds to hit what they're aiming at. Those weapons are designed to do ONE THING! KILL PEOPLE and INFLICT AS MUCH DAMAGE AS POSSIBLE!! Same for hollow point and high powered ammo. It should NOT be legal. It is no good for personal protection. You can't tell me that someone is going to fire hollow points at an intruder in their house. Even if they hit their target...the bullet is likely to go through the intruder and through a wall and hit a family member...and THEY KNOW THAT!! A revolver or semi-automatic handgun with standard ammo is all that's needed for personal protection. ALONG WITH THE KNOW HOW TO SAFELY USE THEM! The NRAs stand against owner registration for ALL weapons is a cowards stand. Afraid the govt. will know who owns what weapons and how many? What are these people afraid of? Perhaps that their stolen guns might be used in a crime and linked back to them...possibly resulting in a lawsuit? If that's the case ...THE WEAPON SHOULD HAVE BEEN SECURED BETTER! Same for pawn shops and gun shops. Weapons should be taken apart for display and working parts locked up in a safe. Recently in S.Fla there have been gun shops and pawn shops broken in to and dozens of working weapons stolen. There is too much irresponsibility with owners and dealers allowing weapons to get into the hands of criminals. There are no simple answers BUT there ARE ways to REDUCE the instances of assault rifles and high powered ammo (daisy cutters, teflon bullets etc) falling into the hands of criminals. OUTLAW them for the general public and allow their manufacture for ONLY police and the military. They should be manufactured and stored in warehouses as secure as fort Knox. (I'd say as secure as a nuclear plant but we've seen on the news those aren't as secure as we'd all like to think.) The mfrs. of such weapons MUST be accountable for EACH one by serial number or have to answer WHERE IT WENT!! IF they aren't being made or sold to the public and NEWLY made (numbered) weapons are still getting into the hands of criminals then the gun mfrs are to be held responsible and govt investigations initiated. Yes, some will be imported illegally...but stronger control of imports at our ports will help there. If NRA members and supporters can SOMEHOW overcome the fear of losing their manhood if they can't have assault rifles....the safer we'll ALL be!!
"NRA Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre said he liked what he heard from Giuliani. “He said a lot of things that if you’re a law-abiding American firearm owner, you’re nodding and you’re saying ‘I agree with that,’” he said."

LaPierre's quote makes it seems as if he's buying this nonsense. I dropped my NRA membership when LaPierre made his moronic speech years ago calling policemen "jack booted thugs". As long as LaPierre is in charge at the NRA I will never renew my membership and really have to question his motivations in endorsing ANY candidate.

Giuliani has a track record of disregarding our Constitutional rights, so does Romney. I'm hoping that Thompson or Ron Paul can make a showing as it is pathetic that the Republican nomination boils down to two clowns (Giuliani and Romney) who would be perfect Democrats.
Obama said he will give tax breaks to gun owners.  He has my vote.
I'm an NRA activist in south central Wisconsin. Rudi Giuliani is the only Republican capable of beating Senator Hillary Clinton in the general election. As a centrist Republican as well as a gun-rights activist, he suits me just fine.

Moreover, I'm certain he will be the Republican candidate for the same reason I'm certain Clinton will be the Democratic candidate. This election, the first in many years, only a centrist candidate from either major party is likely to win either the nomination or the election. Republicans who want to keep her from winning the presidency will support Giuliani.

In any case, with the all-in-one week primary elections coming up immediately after January 1, 2008, the main selection process will all be over in just another 100 days. Which suits me fine. I only want my side to win elections, not bicker over the impossible demands of left-wingers or right-wingers which can never be met.

Guns don't kill people. Abortion kills people.  Roe V Wade.  50 million dead and counting.
Any traction Giuliani had with that audience was quickly lost with that pathetic performance on his cell phone!!!
Forget his gun stands...he has had how many wives and galfriends concurrently? The rabid religious right are stuck with their moral baloney and can't vote for someone with the moral compasss of a gerbil...hence no rudy as nominee and thats why the gun position won't matter...hehe
Whatever happened to our freedom of choice?
