Oh-eight (D): The Hillary filibuster

Posted: Monday, September 24, 2007 9:07 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

CLINTON: The New York senator hit all the Sunday morning shows yesterday, including NBC’s Meet the Press. The Washington Post says that she “demonstrated a particularly senatorial skill: the art of the filibuster… Above all, though, in a morning of appearances that yielded virtually no news, Clinton illustrated her ability to talk. And talk. And talk.”

The New York Daily News called it “TV’s Tour de Hillary.” On Meet the Press, Clinton touted her ability to withstand Republicans’ “withering attacks.” “I think I've proven that I not only can survive them but surpass them," she said.

The Sunday New York Times had a CW-setting piece about Clinton's place in the campaign. "She has been challenged for fund-raising supremacy and news media attention by Senator Barack Obama of Illinois. Former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina beat her to the punch in introducing big policy proposals. But nothing that her main rivals have done has so far has derailed Mrs. Clinton, leading them to begin rolling out aggressive new strategies aimed primarily at her, including courting black voters in South Carolina and stepping up attacks."

In particular, here are two key quotes from Clinton foes… David Axelrod with Obama: “The question is ultimately, Is she credible -- whether people buy her as an agent of change in Washington. If they do, she’ll do well.” Joe Trippi with Edwards: “You used to be able to say the front-runners -- her and Obama -- but I don’t think that’s the case anymore. It’s pretty clear that she has sort of pulled away.”

Also: "The three leading contenders have also adopted decidedly different views of how the race will play out. Mrs. Clinton’s advisers argued that it would probably end on Feb. 5 when about 20 states vote. Though only 50 percent of the delegates will be selected by that day, the Clinton advisers suggested that one candidate would be so far ahead that there would be huge pressure on the other Democrats to rally around the leader.

Mr. Obama has begun preparing for a much more protracted campaign, arguing that it will be in effect a hunt for delegates that could last well into the spring. To that end, he is competing in some unlikely places — New York, for example, where he is holding a rally in Washington Square Park on Thursday — because under Democratic rules, delegates are allocated to candidates based on the percentage of votes they win."

How confident is Clinton? She's missing far fewer Senate votes than Obama.

Speaking of being the front-runner, Clinton can now dangle the VP slot as a way to win more endorsements. Add Evan Bayh -- who is endorsing Clinton today -- to the short list.

The Sunday Washington Post looked at the influence of Clinton's mother on the candidate. "14 years after Hillary Clinton entered the White House with her husband and became known worldwide, the woman she identified as her most enduring influence remains a mystery. Clinton, who famously kept her own daughter, Chelsea, out of the public eye, is even more protective of her mother. No interviews with her or photographs -- and no interviews with Clinton on the subject."

John Grisham headlined a fundraiser with Clinton in Charlottesville, VA on Sunday. The Charlottesville Daily Progress reports the event drew 1,000 people and raised $200,000.

DODD: The Connecticut senator gets the front-page treatment in the New York Times, which notes that his presidential bid is “is the most public chapter in his career-long quest for his father’s redemption.” Dodd’s father was censured by the Senate in 1967 for diverting campaign funds for his personal use.

EDWARDS: Today, at Kaiser Family Foundation's Health Care Forum, Edwards will unveil a new strategy to combat AIDS/HIV. As his campaign likes to point out, Edwards was the first presidential candidate to roll out a health-care plan. Today, his campaign notes, he builds on that plan with specific proposals to combat HIV/AIDS at home and around the world. "The loss from HIV/AIDS is almost beyond understanding,” Edwards is expected to say today. “This is a fight for people's lives. We have a moral imperative to do much more, and do it much better.”

OBAMA: The campaign holds a conference call with reporters at 10:00 am ET to make an Iowa-related announcement.

Doesn't Obama ask for coverage like this when he rails against Clinton's ties to lobbyists? The Boston Globe takes a look at Obama's ties to Illinois lobbyists.

The campaign plans to hold a major campaign event on Thursday in New York City, flexing its muscle a bit on Clinton’s turf. Also of note: There's a "Barack on Broadway" fundraiser set for tonight in New York.

The Columbia State’s Lee Bandy on Obama’s chances in South Carolina: “In South Carolina, Obama has put together a high-tech and grass-roots get-out-the-vote campaign unmatched by anything seen in the state before. Obama is organized in all 46 counties. Much goes on outside of the public eye or, as campaign organizers are fond of saying, below the radar.”

In addition, Sunday’s Columbia State says it “stands by its reporting as accurate” that Jesse Jackson said Obama was “acting like he’s white” because of a tepid response to the “Jena Six” case. The paper wraps what its coverage with what it calls “The Jesse Jackson fallout.”

Chicago Sun-Times' Sweet examines the most recent memo from manager David Plouffe, and notes how he attempts to raise the expectations bar in Iowa for Clinton. Also, don't miss Sweet's reporting on the SEIU endorsement. Apparently, Edwards won a plurality in the straw poll.

Meanwhile, NBC/National Journal’s Carrie Dann tells us to mark our calendars on Oct. 2 for Obama to commemorate his own five-year anniversary of his giving his first anti-Iraq war speech.

Dann also watches local Iowa TV so you don't have to. On Friday's edition of Iowa Press (Midwestern cousin of MTP -- a TV bible for newbie Iowa politicos and reporters), it was clear that the CW among the long-time gurus is that Hillary Clinton is in a solid place here in the state. The Register's Yepsen said that Edwards is "kind of flat," and we already know how he feels about Barack Obama from his "big loser" column last week. The AP's Mike Glover also made the somewhat brutal assessment that  "there is a tradition among Democrats that they shoot their wounded," meaning that Edwards might suffer from a damaged-goods syndrome left over from 2004. Yepsen sees a lean towards Clinton now, but he acknowledged on the show that it looks like the race "could break late."

I believe that if we Democrats give Mrs. Clinton the nomination she will win.  However, I think this is only because the Republicans and (more importantly)GW are hated so much.  I don't think she can win again in 2012.  So if we Democrats are satisfied with only four years in the White House she's a sure bet.  I want real change.  America wants real change.  Hillary is not change.  She is nothing but the same old thing. She can't even come up with her own Healthcare plan and who knows where she stands on troop levels in Iraq. Lets think beyond the here and now.  Let's stop buying the pandoring by the same people.  And lets remeber that the "god 'ol days" of the 90's will never come back like some people wish just because there is another Pres. Clinton.  If Clinton gets '08, prepare for Jeb in '12.
It does appear that Hillary Clinton is on her way to the Democratic nomination and an eight-year say at the White House as the President.  It is in no part a small thing that George Bush has so wonderfully and skillfully torpedoed his own presidency that has placed Hillary on the glide path she is on today.  The skills and abilities that we need are the ones Hillary is displaying: a keen understanding of the modern US polity and an ability to get along with the US public, from both red and blue states.  Bush has made so many careless errors and has so completely undermined the legitimate need for security for US interest in the world that it does appear that even the ‘military-industrial complex’ is now supporting Hillary Clinton for president.  What a change from just a few years ago when the GOP was the stalwart of corporate world domination; now the wife of the man who brought the world NAFTA is poised to become the most powerful person on the planet.
To those who vehemently dislike Sen. Hillary Clinton(or hatred towards anyone for that matter):  In my experience of examining myself and others, emotional reactionary responses have more to with yourself than the person you're reacting to.  It seems to me that this hatred transcends her and reflects some sort of anger, perhaps a legitimate anger.  If you discover and analyze this anger, you can resolve it in a more productive and just way.  I mean, who wants to be angry all the time.
Hillary Clinton is the next President of the United States. Period! The vile comments made about her are generally (not always) from misogynist individuals who would NEVER vote for a woman anyway.  I'm a male voter living in the South and Hillary has crushed her competition in each debate - and she's getting stronger every day.  Come Jan 2009 we will all say - MADAME PRESIDENT!  I love it!
jqberry - "keep her own man faithful" ???

What cave did you just crawl out of?  How is she in any way responsible for his actions?  If you were a decent individual - regardless of political leanings - you would feel sad for what was most likely a very embarrassing, sad and traumatic time.

Shameful and ignorant.
jqberry - So when your spouse cheats on you, is it okay for me to come over and point fingers at you?  Thank you for once again demonstrating the idiocy underlying much of the negative sentiment towards Hillary.
If Hillary is so savy why didn't she get rid of Bill before deciding to run?He is still a major obstacle.I perish the thought of him being back in the White House.Wally
Are you MAN enough to vote for a woman for Pres.?

(But i would like her to   stop the "faith talk."
Religious belief is not
a requirement for office.)

Kristian - What exactly is the problem with Hillary going on the talk show circuit this weekend?  Was it illegal?  Was it improper?  Was she violating someone else's rights?  I don't get it.  Even if it was damage control, so what?  Damage control is as natural to all of these people as breathing is.  You don't get far in politics without knowing how to spin.
Hillary will kick ass on election day and all the repubs and women haters will burst into flames! Oh the fireworks!
Are you MAN enough to vote for a woman for Pres.?

(But i would like her to   stop the "faith talk."

I really don't understand all the hoopla surrounding HRC.  It was bad enough when her husband was elected to two terms - now to have her in the WH w/him behind the scenes?  Come on people wake up!  This country has a two party system:  politicians and voters.  Make a difference vote smart.  Look at their history, experience and the way they voted.  Don't believe what you hear on television - it's all twisted to the politics of who pays the most for the ads.
Brilliant! Senator Clinton was absolutely outstanding on every talk show this Sunday.
She is thoughtful, articulate and totally knowledgeable about domestic and foreign circumstances.
She is our next President.   If only that would happen tomorrow the world would rejoice.
Every Democrat should thank their lucky stars that she is able and willing to serve a country that has so humiliated her.  She has lived in a gold fish bowl for years and still has survived.  The lies and made up stories that did not have any basis in fact are not hers. If there are real Democrats out there that can not vote for her so be it.  She does not need your vilification only your silence.  Please do not vote for anyone as you are to far gone and will believe lies and are to lazy to seek truth. Hillary is not responsible for any ones actions only her own.
Trolls and stupid people please do not vote. We had enough stupid people responsible for the killer in the WH now, look what you did you airheads, NEVER vote again.
Thank God, a president who can restore honesty and integrity to the White House, after 8 years of lies, war for oil, blood-stained Halliburton,"I don't recall" Gonzales, etc.

Give me a hot affair any day over this bunch of scum.
Kristian not to worry there is no God.  Take a look see at the WH and a trip to Iraq. There is hell on earth but you are shit out luck in the God department!
Oh and the goodness of man..real short supply there also.
I would NEVER vote for Hillary. If no other reason - she openly scorned all of the US Military personnel assigned to the White House while she and her husband occupied the building.  She even went so far as to demand that Military personnel not wear uniforms around her.  Her total lack of respect for this country and those who serve to defend it is sickening.
Hillary and Bill! They were great in the 90's and they'll be even better this time.

In two posts Carrie, Eastern Iowa wrote
"Hillary is a fighter, and she is as tough as they come.  She's had to be." &
"I know many people who are quick to say Hillary is a bitch and Hillary is this or that, but when pressed to give specifics, they can't. "

I agree many people hate her are irrational. The qualities listed as reasons they hate Hillary, she shares with Condi, or Liddy Dole, who most Hillary haters love.

I agree most Hillary hate is unfair. But what I don't understand either is blind love or devotion to her. All these posts, for months from so many of her supporters who say she's the most experienced, she's most qualified, she's most intelligent (I doubt that, she's the only Democratic candidate who flunked the DC bar exam, I'm sure its hard, and I don't question she's intelligent, but I don't think she'd smarter than the rest of the Democratic field), and yet they never support those statements.

1. what makes Hillary so strong? I'm not saying she isn't, but whats the basis for the statement.
2. What is her experience, specifically? I agree she's been in the Senate 6 years 8 months, and was First lady, but if you count the first lady, what did she accomplish as 1st lady. The only thing she tried to accomplish, health care reform, she failed miserably, and cost Democrats the House and Senate in 04.
3. Please name one major, or even minor legislative accomplishment of Hillary's in the Senate. Not a bill that she signed on as a co-sponsor, unless she was an original co-sponsor, and actually worked to get it passed.

If someone can please actually provide a legitimate basis to support Hillary as the most experienced, qualified I will re-think my opposition to her as the Democratic nominee, and work hard to try and elect her.
Hillary is the frontrunner because she is the BEST, MOST QUALIFIED, MOST BRILLIANT, MOST EXPERIENCED OF ALL THE OTHER CANDIDATES!!!  Hillary will not only win the nomination but she will be our next president! Our FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT!!!!!  Hillary is the first former First Lady to hold public office and she will be the first woman to break that glass ceiling and FINALLY a woman will be the President of the United States of America!!!
It's really great that she is spending all new york tax payers money that she get for being a senator, by ignoring NY while she runs for president! I wish I could get paid like that. How many of us know of jobs where we can get a couple hundred thousand for a job that we don't show up for cause we are cruising the country! Obviously she knew she was going to run for President so why waste our time begging for senate votes?
The up-shod of this story is that she appeared and said really nothing.  Fielded questions but answered none of them.
And for this ability she should be elected President???  I can dig up any number of corpses from any number of cemeteries across the United States who can perform equally as well.
This may sound a bit premature.. but there is a lot of ground to cover between now and the New Hampshire primaries and the Iwo cacuses, and I think it too early to handicap the horse race yet.  Clinton, Obama, and Edwards all have flaws, and they have good points as well.  What it comes down too, (I think at least) is the vision for the future that each envisions, and I have yet to see one.  Now perhaps I have not been studying this as mush as I should, but it seems that Obama is taking more about vision than Clinton.  Edwards is kind of in the middle.  I will be interested if we have a debate where the issues of the day (race, crime, gasoline and oil) and how a change in direction under their leadership may or may not impact them, and in turn the country.  Such an exchange would not only refreshing, it might shed some light on the differences that each candidate hopes to institute to get us from wht sad state of ntional discourse we are in.  Oh by the way, I favor Obama st this time, but my mind is still open.  I just know we have GOT to da better than what we have now
Are we really ready for a post menopausal woman to be the leader of America??? Its not the right time to put a woman in office, sorry it is the truth....
Why do the Republicans hate the Clintons so much? They spent millions of dollars of public money to persecute the Clintons over a private land deal in Arkansas. They say President Bill Clinton is a sex addict or whatever, but they are totally silent about their own people's DEVIANT sexual behavior (boys, restrooms, etc). I, too, thought that Hilary Clinton was very Presidential in her apprearances. While her opponents make jokes about Bill Clinton being the "first lady". They keep on bringing up the MoveOn ad about "Betray Us", but have been totally silent about the totally false and malicious "Swift Boat" attacks on Kerry, even though they paid a fine of approximately $300,000 to the FEC. Do we want the country to be run by the petty, negative Republicans?
You know by this being later in september, this really doesn`t mean that she will be president.
This is still 2007, just like J. Kerry they ( the Repukes) mat elect her just to let her fall. HRC will not be president. She gets more media coverage than all the other candidates, I guess cause she`s a woman. They are pushing her on the American people, HRC this HRC that..........What I don`t get is why are some you not seeing that she is just a Repuke in drag/Democrats clothing, feeding more lies to the American people. She flip flops all over the place, can`t make up her mind unless someone says something that she likes that when it becomes her idea.
Please this woman can`t make a decision with if you gave her only one choice.

So lets see...She appeared on all these outlets, said nothing of substance; fielded numerous questions, but answered none of them directly.
And for this she should be elected President???  I can dig any number of corpses, from any number of cemeteries across the United States who can perform equally as well!
If the American people actually believe that Hillary Clinton is the best we can do for President than we deserve all the criticism that we get from other countries. She is by no stretch of the imagination ready or capable of running this country. If history repeats itself what kind of scandal will she get involved in. What we need now is a strong and moral person who can lead with only one agenda on his mind, to make this country stronger than it ever was. A few too many dead friends behind her and Bill for my taste.
Dear Floyd, I think you've lost your mind !!!  Hillary handled herself very well with Tim Russert on Sunday.
I watched a lot of the Hillary coverage on Sunday and I have to say I am very impressed. She is smart, articulate, and running a strong mainstream campaign. After 8 years of The Beverly Hillbillies in the White House it's nice to actually hear from someone who has a clue. I think she'll make a great president.
j q berry: Your cracking me up man. The idea that a woman is responsible for her husbands philandering is ludicrous. I bet you think that rape victims are women who "asked for it".
Crystal (no address given): You're funny! I like it!  You say you're a former Hillary supporter in your first para, then you bring up Lewinsky in the next!  Written like a true astroturfer!  Piece of advice: if you want people to think you were swayed by her voting, don't suddenly throw in something a long-time Republican would say.  Stick to today's Hillary-bashing script.
I am so offended by women who want to say they are proud of Hillary because she is such a strong woman. She is an opportunist and a dissembler. She changed her name from Rodham to Clinton and back so many times it made me dizzy. It just depended on what face she thought would get her or Bill the votes. She and Bill have lowered the standard for honor and truth and for respect to the office of presidency, to the military and to the public. Her meddling in health care without even a willingness to have any physician on her advisory committe is what derailed a health care system that was much stronger then than now. Her input lead to Medicare ruling that have forced the closing of the majority of the charity and public hospitals that once provided excellent care despite your ability to pay. Her self serving cynicism means that she has no loyalty to the country, its people or the military. Anyone who actually listens to what she says rather than cheering at the rhetoric will notice she contradicts herself depending on what serves her. Her dishonesty is exceeded only by her gall. If she is the president we deserve God help us. If she is to represent women I am ashamed.
I am fed up with all those critics who are trying(but not succeding)to put the Clinton's down, After all former President Clinton was alot better president than Bush, even with all his defects (and tell me who doesn't have any?) he was much better than the one we have now! My vote is still for Hilary 100% and I know she will be one hell-of-a- presidenta!!!
All the talk today has been about free-speech and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's invitation to Coumbia University.

HERE'S A FREESPEECH PEARL FROM HRC-LAND:  Early this summer, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign for president learned that the men’s magazine GQ was working on a story the campaign was sure to hate: an account of infighting in Hillaryland.

So Clinton’s aides pulled a page from the book of Hollywood publicists and offered GQ a stark choice: Kill the piece, or lose access to planned celebrity coverboy Bill Clinton. GQ capitulated ---SOURCE: politico.com
I commented on this article earlier today and came back to read additional comments. There is no doubt about it; we are the most politically polarized we have been in our country's history, and combine that with a lot of people who are terrified of a female President, and blammo, here's what you get: Very polarized comments. Some intelligent; others just insulting. And as I read the comments I chuckled because it's so obvious those commenters who said "I would never vote for her" and made rude personal attacks about Hillary would never vote for a democrat anyway. Big deal. It's pretty much the same whereever you read out there on the internet.

The only question is whether conservatives would sooner vote for a candidate who doesn't represent their values (such as Guiliani or McCain or Thompson) purely in a desperate effort to defeat Hillary Clinton. Casting aside their deep deep concerns about premarital sex, extramarital sex, gay sex, upsidedown sex, etc. I think if value voters DO flipflop and vote for someone with an unsavory past and non-conservative beliefs, then lose either way. It's going to be very difficult for conservatives. They have no one to blame for the debacle but George. The accidental, failure president.

Go Hillary.
How much does gravedigging pay these days, Franco? Did bush's tax cuts make you rich? Satisfied with the price of gas driving to and from the cemeteries? Got enough money to put food on your family? Was one of those corpses you buried a family member killed needlessly in Iraq?

Open your mind to the mere possibility that ANYONE other than George Bush will be a welcome relief. Male or female. All politicians spin, male or female. Open your mind. Think.
All of the so called front runners are just more of the same. Do you think Hillary would give up the power that Bush seized since coming to power? You might want to take a look back at her husband's record. Do you think Rudy would return our freedoms? You are deluding yourselves.

Ron Paul is the only candidate in either party who has any intention of shrinking the government and returning liberty to the people of America.
Something that Hilary is that no one seems to be mentioning is globalist. Yes she is a democrat and a globalist, if she is to become president it will fall to her to hand over the bankrupt United States to the UN Security Councel and they can decide how to operate the country. New World Order, unelected, controlled by money.
What is the real, true motive, the real driver for wanting to lead the US?

What makes people like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama work tirelessly for years on end to try and achieve this position?

Is Hillary in particular possessed with wanting the role?  Isn't there any other reality for her in this world?  Everything she does and has done seems to be for only one purpose and one purpose alone: to rule the most powerful nation on Earth.

Whatever the case may be I ask that you please consider, question, probe, explore, seek, ponder, discuss, debate and examine the motives these people have for wanting to rule your lives; for wanting to make decisions on your behalf, to manage your industries, your defense, your internal and international relationships, to steer you through what may potentially be the most challenging four years of your lives.

You need only look back at the past decade to see just how complex a world you have inherited and that this complexity is only increasing each and every day.

The next person to lead you will need to understand this complexity and help you navigate beyond it to calmer waters.

Whatever you may think, feel or do: VOTE and get everyone else you know to VOTE.

The next election has got to be an all for one and one for all effort.  You don’t want another ’close call’.  It has got to be unanimous and unequivocal.

As you know, the future is pretty much anyone’s guess and if it’s anything like the past seven, you’ll want to choose wisely.

Try to accept the others’ choice of candidate and not comment on their decision as that should not be of your concern.  You should only focus on what you want and who you want to represent your thoughts and feelings.

Try and remember that in the grand scheme of things, everyone has a part to play and everyone can make a difference.
Republicans keep up the great work of freeping the polls and keeping Hillary C. on the Democratec Patry TOP of the list.

If you need more info on how to vote in phone and internet polls for hillary, there's good infromation on many cuonservative websites.

We must MUST MUST have hillary as they're nominee you guys.     Keep her on the top of there polls cuz they must vote her as they're nominee!!!!!

No more clintons:We do not need nor want any more of thier lieing, stealing white house membrobelia, crooked deals, Hillarys nasty vulgar mouth to the staff.  This woman wants to be a dictater and wants to control every move of the American people whle taxing us to the bone.
Today Clinton offers no big ideas, no crusading causes -- her own tacit admission, no evidence of bravery in the service of a larger ideal. Instead, her Senate record is an assemblage of many, many small gains. Her real accomplishment in the Senate has been to rehabilitate the image and political career of Hillary Rodham Clinton. Impressive though that has been in its particulars, it makes for a rather thin claim on the presidency. Senator Clinton has plenty to talk about, but she doesn''t have much to say. So she wins the Dem side, where is the surprise there! No brainer. She isn''t going to win the Presidency, and that''s a no brainer, too.
