Oh-eight (D): Sub-prime problem?

Posted: Thursday, September 27, 2007 9:19 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

CLINTON: The Washington Times runs this story: "Officials of a defunct pro-Democratic group that was hit with a near-record campaign-finance fine last month hold strong ties to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign, documents show. At least four persons who worked for the America Coming Together (ACT) fundraising group, which the Federal Election Commission recently fined $775,000, work directly for the Clinton campaign or hold top positions with consulting firms hired by it."

And don’t miss the clipart graphic a Web site run by the Clinton campaign used of Obama likely leading in fund-raising. The graphic was also passed along by the Clinton campaign itself over e-mail. Notably, it’s no longer on the Web site, but the Boston Globe clipped it and asked, Did someone think that maybe it was a little too much?

Rob Reiner can handle the truth! He's for Hillary.

EDWARDS: The candidate's ties to the hedge fund Fortress continue to haunt the candidate in some of the early states. A few weeks ago, a South Carolina paper noted the number of local foreclosures by subprime mortgage companies owned by Fortress and had the candidate on the defensive. Now, this morning, in the Des Moines Register, the paper reports on another 100+ Iowa homeowners being foreclosured upon by Fortress-owned lenders. "Most Iowa Democratic activists interviewed by The Des Moines Register say the foreclosures by themselves do not undermine Edwards' anti-poverty message. However, some say he should have known that his tie to Fortress, which paid him $479,500 for 14 months of work, would be scrutinized in the campaign."

Edwards said he did not know about the Iowa foreclosures until his campaign was contacted by the Register. Edwards said he has no plans to establish a charity for the Iowans with Fortress mortgages because they were not affected by Hurricane Katrina the way borrowers in New Orleans were.

OBAMA: NBC-NJ's Aswini Anburajan reports, at a debate watch party for Obama supporters at Dartmouth last night, the audience was subdued during the debate (maybe because it wasn't that exciting or because the eighty-plus degree weather helped lull the crowd into a stupor) but there was a large chorus of boos for NBC commentator Chris Matthews for criticizing Obama's performance.

A hoarse Obama stopped by the debate party around 11:30 and spoke for about five minutes. Emphasizing the importance of building momentum from the ground up, he told the story of starting out as a community organizer in Chicago where only one or two people showed up for the first three meetings he tried to hold. He also referred to a recent poll that had Sen. Clinton in the lead by twenty points, and said that it meant nothing besides what percentage of people were supporting which candidate.  "Twenty percent of voters are with Sen. Clinton, 10 percent are with me, Edwards has about 5 percent and the rest of the candidates have less than that."

Citing that same poll, Obama said the most important fact overlooked by the pundits were the number of undecideds still up for grabs. "There are 55 percent of voters who are undecided.  That's 55 to 60 percent of the people who are waiting to hear from you," he told the crowd of campaign volunteers made up of students from colleges in Massachusetts and across New Hampshire as well as local volunteers.

Obama’s fund-raising “is slipping,” Bloomberg News writes. The expectation is about $20 million this quarter, according to the article, but “a failure to out-raise Clinton would deprive Obama of the momentum he needs to overcome his rival's leads in national and key state polls.”

I think the media has been tough on Obama, but if he wants to be president now or someday in the future---he better get used to it!
I guess John Edwards is right, there are two america's.  For a guy who talks about the poor, he is sure getting a lot of people kicked out of their homes and all because his name is attached to a company.  Sort of like the Clinton's name being used with a company that is stealing money from Alzheimer's patients.

The Clinton's just dig themselves deeper and deeper into the abyss with each and every day.  Now Bill Clinton got his depends in a knot because a picture of his daughter is in a restaurant in New York.  I'd contribute to that guy's defense fund and go to war.  I'd bring Hillary in to take the stand and just make life hell for them.  A trial for Bill Clinton in the media capitol of the world?  Priceless.  At least the restaurant owner is leaving the picture of Rudy up, at least it shows he has class.  If I was a lawyer, I would be drooling at the chance to take on the Clinton's in court.
Sooner or later the Democrats will have to face the worst possible confrontation. They'll have to debate on Fox.
Can any of you tell me exactly what every company your mutual fund is invested in is doing everywhere in the world?

I didn't think so.  What a stupid nonstory.

The headline is about Edwards, put him at the top, not Clinton.  It matters how you organize it, because if somebody never clicks on read more the other candidates lose out.  Obama, Richardson, Kucinich, Gravel, who are never even shown!
I think Chris Mathews needs to be Fired! because this was breaching to his guests to be neutral while he was sucking up to  the Clintons. I think the right job for Chris is at the Clinton campaign. obviously he can not handle his job fairly. PLEASE MSNBC BE FAIR TO ALL CANDIDATES. IF YOU CONTINUE ON THIS ROUTE OF HAVING GUYS LIKE CHRIS I THINK YOU WILL LOSE CREDIBILITY JUST LIKE FOX. PLEASE BE FAIR TO ALL CANDIDATES
Instead of always talking about Edward's ties to a hedge fund, why not talk a bit about Romney's ties to Mr. Cofer, Giuliani's ties to a convicted drug dealer and another convicted former police commissioner under his watch, and more about Fred's lobbying clients.  You in the MSM missed the boat on the Bush ties to the Carlisle Group, why not inform us about all the candidates like you didn't do in the last election.
if you don't make your mortgage payments you get your house taken away, is edwards supposed to be responsible for this somehow? if so please explain because I don't see the connection here
AH, OF TEXAS, you're so right. When Cris too much bulls I switch my channel. He's so biased by degrading specific candidate. I believe Chris is a stupid republican commentator. I hope MSNBC goes into the drain because of his stupidity.

Last night's debate continued a pattern we've seen in Iowa for the past six months. Edwards' answers are consistently more direct and more detailed. Clinton is frequently required to defend or otherwise respond to policy questions relating to her husband's presidency. Obama is magnificent when working from prepared material but stumbles with extemporaneous speech. There's a reason Edwards has consistently led in Iowa. We get to see exactly how these campaigns work for a year or more before they hit the national spotlight. (The fact is, we're tripping over them.) The bottom line? Take the headlines about "front runners" with a grain of salt. You're being "sold."
But I am sure that the Clinton had no knowledge of anything illegal, wait she already used that line with the Norman Hsu fiasco…

A Democrat for President? Ha ha hee hee!
Response for DrFranklives,

I don't know all of the companies my mutual funds invests in.  I also don't claim to be the savior of the poor and vulnerable of our society.

Edwards is the most glaring hypocrite of all the candidates... on both sides of the aisle.
FIRE CHRIS MATHEWS ASAP OR MAKE HIM CHANGE HIS BIAS VIEWS.
I've made a ton of money off my investments with Fortress!!  Thank you John Edwards!!!
FIRE CHRIS MATHEWS ASAP OR MAKE HIM CHANGE HIS BIAS VIEWS.
Thanks Drfranklives. I doubt that very many people, including the reporters on the story about Edwards, could tell us exactly how their money, once invested, is used. I really wish the media would stick with the issues. There important questions that I'd like to hear answered, questions on issues and candidates' actual plans to solve them. Although Hillary would probably just repeat her mantra: "I'm not going to speculate." In other words, we're supposed to have blind faith that she'll do what this country needs and vote for her. Uhm, no.
I have excellent hearing and what I heard Matthews saying was Hillary bashing---over and over---so was his round table.Laughing and grinning like a chesire cat.So quit telling people what yoou wanted them to hear---we all have ears.
To AH, Texas - Time to get your eyes and ears checked. Chris Mathews is erratic and hardly a Clinton supporter. HARDBALL is not a news program, but one on politics and opinion. If you think Mathews should be fired, what about Pat Buchanan?

On another topic, what is First Read's obsession with Edwards haircuts (old story) and success in private life? This all needs to be placed in proper context.

How many mutual funds and hedge funds invested in the same subprime market? Where in law does it say that former elected officials have no right to earn a living once out of office?  How many charities have Guiliani, Thompson, McCain, and Romney started? In the end this has little, if anything, to do with choosing a President!
It seems like we're trying to convince ourselves that Edwards can't win the election and Hillary can.  It's just the opposite.  What foolishness.
Look, we Dems better wise up. Of the 3 top-tier candidates, she is the one least likely to win in the general election. Why do you think Bush and Rove are saying that she will be the candidate? In the general, independents will turn away from her, and likely we will have Rudy Kazootie as our next president. I hope I die before that happens.
Hillary will probably be our next president. That means more mediocrity in the White House. We once had great inspirational presidents like FDR, Truman and JFK. Now we get mediocrity like GW Bush and soon Hillary.
OK, so J.E. has the $ for pricey haircuts and doesn't want to look like Nixon vs. Kennedy on TV.  How did he get this money?  Was he born with a silver spoon in his mouth and live off of his family's vast fortunes?  Or did he work hard to accomplish things and listen to financial experts on where to invest his $?
I'd much prefer to see a story by Chuck Todd that talks about those beltway insiders he's been talking to that don't like Edwards. It's not very fair to state after last nights debate that the DC insiders hate Edwards and not give any names. If they are sabotaging Edwards behind the scenes by making negative remarks about him to the media I think that is newsworthy and the public has a right to know who they are.
jerry/corpus christi texas (Sent Thursday, September 27, 2007 9:46 AM)

You are a right wing moron.
RE Edwards:  It's entirely possible that he was unaware that a portion of the fund was responsible for predatory lending.  Some of these funds are huge and unless your the fund manager or a savvy investor you probably do not know everything in the fund.  Edwards worked as a consultant.

RE:  Chelsea's picture.  What is the story here?  Bill and his attorneys sent a letter to the restaurant owner requesting that he take down the picture of Chelsea in the window because she may have eaten there once but was not endorsing the restaurant.  Simple request no harm.  I think the restaurant owner actually put a copy of the letter in the window to replace the picture.

RE:  TX Jerry as a lawyer......LMAO.
Why do right wingers always want to go to war.  First it was Bush whining back in 2002 that "11 years ago Saddam tried to kill my daddy".  "It's worth sacrificing as many Americans as possible to make sure I kill Saddam."  Uhhh Saddam was killed a long time ago, can our brave men and women come home now?  I'm sure someday Bush will be sitting in Crawford with the grandkids telling them how he personally went to Iraq and captured and killed Saddam.
Now you want to go to war over a picture of Chelsea. You are a very sick individual.
Please go watch Fox Noize and start your lovefest with hannity!!!!

Hardball's Chris Matthews needs to be fired for his bias coverage!  MSNBC needs to be blasted with their nonstop coverage of Hillary Clinton only and not the other candidates.  And for Chris Matthews to constantly bash Obama then say last night if Obama does not knock out Hillary at the debate that Obama should step aside, only shows his true bias or is it -- biogtry?  Of course Obama shouldn't step aside.  Tell Romney to step aside with his 7% to 9% national poll numbers, tell Rudy to step aside, his poll numbers have been the same as Obama's, tell Mc Cain to step aside, his poll numbers have been in the toilet nationally since he's been running. Tell Edwards to step aside, his poll numbers have been in single digits for a long time, and he should have never been glopped with Obama in the first place, or the second place or the third place!  I think Obama gave a stellar performance at the debate!  I don't think he should chase Hillary at all, she's no competition, she really wants to chase Obama, the true frontrunner!  The media only wants Obama to attack Hillary as this would continue her frontrunner perception. Her poll numbers are illusionary, she only hides behind her name -- all style no substance -- she doesn't answer the questions, she still flipflops and she'll leave combat troops in Iraq forever.  Edwards is a phony as he and his wife scream about everything on their sequel to the white house; you can tell he's false by how much he blinks and slings his tongue out to the side of his mouth when he draws on that southern drawl.  Edwards and Mrs. Edwards has said John is the only one electable since he's male and white, so Edwards is really running a campaign on segregation while campaigning on one America, unification.  HA!  Obama, don't listen to the media.  GO OBAMA!! OBAMA '08!!!
TO Gary,

I think you don't seem to listen Chris very often but I do. It is fair if comes out and declares that he is for Clinton but that is not happening. What is taking place is that a guy claiming to be neutral and shockingly bias just like Bill Orielly. As for Buchanan, he is a conservative who is hoping for hillary to win so rudy can win the general election and he is honest about that. For Chris, I think he needs to submitt his job application to the Clinton Camp. Next time MSNBC airs a democratic debate, I'll bet you that Chris will say that Clinton is the Winner. For example, she lost big time last night and what did your friend Say? I 'll let you answer that!!!
"Can any of you tell me exactly what every company your mutual fund is invested in is doing everywhere in the world?

I didn't think so.  What a stupid nonstory."

To that comment....John Edwards worked there for $500k so he had better know.  And yes, I do know where my mututal funds are invested because they are required to send me a prospectus that lists major investments.  I am only middle class and I certainly would not invest in sub-prime mortgage companies that prey on the poor.
Hey, Dr Frank, most of us don't have $16 million dollars invested in our mutual funds.  For Edwards that's about half his net worth.  That's a whole other ballgame than my puny 401K.  You bet I believe he should know what that much money gets invested in.

And besides, didn't he take that $500,000 job with Fortress so he could "learn" about financial markets?  Looks like they wasted their money.  Unless they wanted something else for that cool half million....like special treatment?
Tom (Sent Thursday, September 27, 2007 11:42 AM)

I agree completely Tom.  The republicans want Hillary to be the nominee because most Americans already have an opinion on her (love or hate).  They think she would be the easiest to beat because there's really no middle ground on how voters feel about her.
I'm interested to see if the Christian right will support an adulteror like Rudy.  He obviously doesn't share their "family value".  He cheated on his first two wives (and maybe his third) and his kid doesn't want anything to do with him because he was a horrible father.  When the media questions him about it, he said his private life is off limits.  It's time for the christian right to show their true morals and pledge to all stay home on election day if he is the nominee....or they can always bring Pat Buchanan back to run as an independent.
There's a big difference in a mutual fund and a hedge fund...

For those who think Chris Matthews is a republican (lmao), he was a speechwriter for Jimmy Carter and was senior aide to Tip O'Neill.  Besides, he's not a reporter, he's a commentator.
FIRE CHRIS MATHEWS ASAP OR MAKE HIM CHANGE HIS BIAS VIEWS.
AH - Were you watching the same post-debate coverage I was?  Matthews was pretty critical of Hillary's refusal to answer and her overall strategy of not committing on issues until the general election.
I wonder when people will stop realizing that there is no objective way to determine who wins and who loses debates.  It's not a point system where every correct answer gets you 5 points, or you are penalized for getting an answer wrong.

People see what they want to see in the candidates, in the debates as well as elsewhere in the campaign.  Those who oppose Hillary thought she was horrible, while those who support her thought she was her usual solid self.  Those who oppose Obama said he was off his game, while those who support him defend his responses as being classy and consistent with his philosophy of campaigning.  It's the same with all the other candidates as well.

People walk away from a debate with differing impressions of what they just saw, much the same way that they walk away from a movie or a play or a concert with different opinions about it.  That's because, like a debate, there is no empirical measure of "goodness" (for lack of a better word).  It's good for some if Obama fights back, but others don't want him to.  Some people want Hillary to stop laughing and start answering questions, but others think her strategy is working.  Some people want Edwards to mix it up more, and others like his laid-back style better.  It's all a matter of what appeals to each of us as individuals.  There's no way to say which candidate is conclusively the winner.
when the dust settles, people will get off the trendy obama wagon, see that hillary is 100% corporate, and vote for a strong leader, john edwards. hes the RFK of our generation. his work to fight poverty and help the less fortunate is the very thing this country is in dire need for. hillary may be up in the national polls, but then again, so was howard dean at this point...

edwards/obama '08!

I'm alawys amazed at people whom critcize sucessfull people.  Edwards started with nothing and did something.  We all have that opportunity and its through hard work and prioritizing our goals.  He's so far the only democratic candidate I'll vote for.  The others have too much baggae attached to their backside.

John Edwards certainly has helped the impoverish.  The illegal aliens he hired to build and landscape his house are very greatful for their less then minimum wage jobs.  He has also walked through New Orleans, more then once.

The man is qualified.
To AH, Texas

We all have our personal views about who won and who lost last night. My own view is that Clinton did not lose her status as the front runner, but Edwards won if graded on points. Given the number of debates, and the fact not a single vote has yet been cast, I'm not sure the win-lose rankings last night matter very much.

I watch HARDBALL regularly, and what you view as Matthews bias is what I view as a commentator expressing an opinion. First impressions, including those of journalists, are not always right. In addition, Matthews comments are used mostly to solicit reaction and debate among his guests. I don't see the Matthews bias toward Hillary that you claim is obvious.  Yes, I know Chris worked for Tip O'Neill and Jimmy Carter.  So what!

What I see in Chris Matthews is an aging 1960's liberal happy with burned bras, but not quite ready or comfortable with a woman President (or maybe it's just Hillary). So much the pity!
Presidential Hopeful Hillary Clinton is now Presidential Hopeless. She can't see the forest for the trees (Hispanic votes). She is Pro-Amnesty and fails to realize how fed up this country is with illegal aliens and the cost to the American taxpayers and the American way of life.

I was hoping for a woman president. Oh well...

Any Republican with a strong anti-illegal alien platform, enforcement of U.S.Laws, and a Big Fence would win by a landslide. And there are still Republicans that could get in this race!

Chris Matthews tries to be unbiased, sometimes more than others, but the fact is he is a Republican and he can't help himself, despite his former speech-writer job for Jimmy Carter. By his own admission he says things like, "Not among the crowd I hang out with."  Well, therein lies the rub!  He only hangs out with Republicans and therefore doesn't as often hear really well-informed, equally intelligent Democrats answer and explain as often. And then there's the network's producers's influence. The producers of Hardball usually set up a 3 to 1 ratio of Republicans to Democrats in their "roundtable" discussions and they usually don't choose a really knowledgable Democrat, or they at least cut off the Dem's. answer before the point is made.  I watch Hardball everyday and I have seen this occur hundreds of times over the last 7 years.  (I will include the time when Bush was still campaigning.)
I don't like Chuck Todd at all.  He is the most biased political director in history of TV. He speaks about Republican talking points, saying "We" this, "We" that.  I rest my case on him.  I agree with the comments of pmorlan, Louisville, KY who said:

The so-called politcal pundits speak with this Republican bias freely and frequently on MSNBC, where Chuck Todd is the chief NBC Political Director he participates in this bias instead of trying to keep matters fair and balanced.

Chris is conflicted about Hillary.  He hangs out with only Hillary-haters and speaks with eagerness and delight about discovering what vulnerabilities could defeat her and after hearing her answer exceptionally well on an issue he says, "I'm warming up to Hillary these days."

Before the debate, Chris Matthews engaged in some 24-karat g-o-a-d-i-n-g to suggest that Obama "attack"  "go after" Hilary in that petty, Rove-ian Republican way, trying to suggest that Obama break his promise not to run his campaign "by attacks of that nature." I admire Obama for keeping his promise and his outstanding articulation of making points without "attack-campaigning."

I cannot leave these comments without pointing out that Joe Biden and Chris Dodd were not asked to give their answer re: would they be for or against building "new" nuclear power plants as part of their plan for becoming energy independent. To me, this is an essential question for any presidential candidate because of the grave risks associated with possible nuclear proliferation, and "dirty bombs."  Then, just as important is the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste storage facility which is enourmously, ginormously expensive and is found to be on an earthquake fault line, meaning it is not safe, afterall.  I believe that 235,000 years is the radioactive half-life of uranium 235 and some of the other nuclear waste by-products. Meaning, the nuclear industry believes humans can safely store the stuff for 235,000 years???, barring anything that Mother Earth or the rest of the universe could bring???  Unfortunately, there is a ginourmous amount of misinformation widely distributed by the nuclear industry everywhere one looks if one bothers to learn and do independent fact-cheking.

Why does Hillary have to answer for her husband's behavior?

I nearly fell over when Mathews criticized her for saying "you'll have to ask my husband" in response to a question about Bill Clinton's chartiable foundation. He compared it to someone calling and a wife saying the same thing.  NOT.  Bill is an adult and he can answer for his own actions with respect to an organization he runs.

That's like Mathews asking me to explain why my husband made a certain decision at work.  Sorry but I'd give Hillary's answer.  If Mathews asked my husband something about my work, he'd be told "ask my wife."

So, explain to me why Hillary has to account for everything Bill does.  Worse, why does she have to explain decisions he made as president 15 years ago?

NOTE TO CHRIS MATHEWS:  BILL AND HILLARY ARE DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
