Some campaign analysis

Posted: Friday, September 28, 2007 2:54 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
The Lombardo Consulting Group, of DC, put together pretty comprehensive look at this election based on publicly available survey data since 2005.

Some bullet points from LCG’s report:
-- Hillary Clinton has taken command of the Democratic nomination for President.
--The Obama campaign is becoming less and less relevant with each passing day.
--Rudy Giuliani is running a general election campaign built on his “electability” and no-one on the Republican side is challenging this premise.
--Romney’s advertising-fueled, early lead in Iowa and NH is eroding.
--Thompson may regret going on Leno instead of debating in NH.
--If McCain is to come back from the dead it will happen in New Hampshire.
--The Giuliani campaign won the award for best tactical maneuver in September

--Polling indicates that Republican primary voters are substantially more satisfied with the GOP candidates they have to chose from then they were in July.
--On the other hand, voters still know very little about the candidates.
--A just released CBS News survey shows that job approval rating for the Democratic-controlled Congress is at 27% which is 6% BELOW the President’s job approval rating.
--Michigan matters and the media will amplify this.
--Every eventual GOP nominee since 1980 has won South Carolina.  (Yes, they also won either NH or Iowa but the fact is that South Carolina may be more important than either of those two early states.)

The horse-race dynamic of the primary has led the media to crown winners long before the first vote has even been cast.

Clinton & Giuliani hasn't won the nominations.  With over 100 days before Iowa, the race continues.  Let's hope that people remain open minded.  Every candidate has much more to say on the issues that matter to America.
Once again, First Read shows it's BIAS by not telling you the whole story.
While Congress' overall approval rating is at 27%....A U.S.A. Today / Gallup Poll shows CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS approval rating is at 51%.
Please tell the full story, it is very important for people to know the TRUTH.
The more i read you guys gabbage the more i think MSNBC is worse than FOX News. This is what i called most irresponsible reporting. What an idiots!
voters still know little about the candidates
Domenico Montanaro revealed he is no less of an Edwards hater than Chuck Todd. You guys suck. No more shilling for the Clinton campaign. You didn't even mention Edwards, but the report did. Also nowhere in the report did it say that Clinton was commanding the lead. You may be able to trick the American people but the democrats from the democratic wing of the party realize what tools you are. Another day, another Washington reporter reveals they have no soul.
--A just released CBS News survey shows that job approval rating for the Democratic-controlled Congress is at 27% which is 6% BELOW the President’s job approval rating.

Ha Ha. The American people have spoken. You guys stink. And you don't fool us. Nor do you even speak for us. The weak-wristed liberal fops on this blog can live in thier dilusional world all they want. America does not and won't ever live there.
Yes and this group was polling Dean as the front runner in Jan 2004. Enough with the Beltway insiders.

I wonder what to believe about Obama's relevancy, his biggest crowd ever (24,000) despite being in HRC's backyard, or some DC based consulting group.
The Lombardo Group is irrelevant.

Sounds like the same geniuses who brought us "Iraq is in the last throes of the insurgency...Iraq oil will pay for the war...The Republicans will hold onto Congress..."

Come to think of it, what is the track record for this group?
If the Lombardo Group had said that Obama and Edwards were strong contenders, would First Read have publicized their results ?

Just curious...

There are probably hundreds of 'consulting groups'
and you guys 'just happened' to pick the one touting Hillary.....

Hey !! next ime pick the Sierra Consulting Group !!
Our rates are 'reasonable' and our research indicates that Obama/Edwards will be the winning ticket in 2008.

Now, that'll be $250,000 in unmarked bills
(I'm giving you the First Read discount)
Um, fellas, how come you JUST added the Obama line?  Too much rosy Obama press today for your liking?

Seriously, when this post first went up today, his name wasn't there.

Fellas, its Friday, we have time to see what you're doing!
It just dawned on me that Chuck Todd is the new Karl Rove. Maybe he's trying to help Obama by lowering our expectations for Barack and also by frightening us with the idea that Hillary has it sewn up. I feel galvanized to show support for Obama and Edwards, how about you?
RH you are such a hater. I dont know what happened in your life to make you such an angry, hateful human being!~    LMAO
What crack are you smoking Chuck? Obama losing revelancy- please.  You and your washington pundits need to go hang out with Georgie in the WH, because you all are delusional. I'm supposed to believe the same polls that couldn't accurately predict Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004.  Chuck, get a clue or a new job.
WITH CLINTON AHEAD IN SEEMINGLY ALL POLLS, I WONDER IF SHE WAS ABLE TO GET OVER 24,000 PEOPLE TO COME TO HER RALLY LIKE THE IRRELEVANT OBAMA!  I THINK THE CONSISTANT USE OF POLLING NUMBERS IS A PLOY TO CONDITION PEOPLE TO THINK SHE HAS A COMMANDING LEAD.  AT BEST SHE IS AT 41%(THAT ONLY 4 OUT OF 10!),  THAT LEAVES A GREAT MAJORITY(6 OUT OF 10) UNWILLING TO SUPPORT HER!  NUMBERS ALWAYS TELL MORE THAN ONE STORY.
There is in this analysis something chocking, Hilary and losing but the voters know little about the candidats. Todd, I am more and more disappointed about first read. I think good journalism requires critical thinking. Unfortunatelly, I am seeing more and more the crowning of the queen and the king before the people voted. Good luck with that. If there is anything about poll is the Dean and Kerry prediction in 2003 and 2004.
lets see, the nyc cops said obama's crowd was under 10K,,,, now wehave a pro obamaite telling us it was 24K...

geez
Amen, Calvin!!!  Where DO they get these polling numbers?  I've a lot of friends and family - spread from the Midwest to Texas to No. Cal.- many politically active - yet no one has ever been contacted by a pollster.  Maybe that's because these brilliant pollsters psychically know that - despite diverse ages/races/priorities - only three out of about 30 people I know are supporting Clinton (all because they want Bill back in the WH).  Only one Clinton supporter is female.  The rest are uncommitted but vociferously agree that they do NOT want to see Clinton as the candidate.

Has anybody here ever been contacted by a pollster?
I agree with the foolishness of questioning Obama's relevancy--and it seems especially absurd coming not one day after he drew a crowd of 24,000 people right in HRC's backyard. HRC may yet win the nomination, but give me a break, the campaign hasn't really even started in earnest yet and Obama has boatloads of money to spend. No one knows how it's going to turn out in the end. Anyone who claims to know, or trusts the silly LGC report referenced above, is just deluding themselves.
Domenico, it's Tom Brennan from your previous employment -- I know you're a smart guy and I know you're a fair reporter, but I have to say with the 25,000 people who showed up to see Obama speak yesterday at Washington Square Park -- I'm not saying he'll necessarily be an upset winner, but I think it's a bit out of place to say his campaign has become irrelevant.
If there was a lack of evidence with regards to the ignorance with which First Read posts articles, that burden has been sufficiently and overwhelmingly met with this one.
I laugh at you Democratic partisans. Chuck Todd as Karl Rove? oo boy, that's a good one.

Everyday, I read something on here critical of Sen. Clinton. Everyday some Clintonian claims bias. Everday I read something on here critical of Sen. Obama. Everyday some Obamite claims bias.

This blog isn't for or against anyone; everyone of the 35 or 40 (or so it seems) candidates running for president has things that can be praised and things that can be criticized. First Read is a damn sight better at this than Politico is.
What does it matter! Instead of maintaining a white European nationalistic superiority that would have excelled in every cultural, scientific, political, military endeavor and the envy of the rest of the world the U.S. is instead rapidly moving toward a low-life mongrel culture that will eventually tear itself to shreds leaving behind but a memory of past glories. It is but amatter of time!
First time for First Read.
Who are you clowns? What axes do you grind and who for?
Your relevance to anything but Inside Baseball..oops, Inside the Washington Beltway...seems scant.
Guess MSNBC needs its own flavor of Faux Noise.
Media outlets like this are just as much the problem with American Politics as anything else. Obama just had 24,000 supports show up to a rally in NYC and this outlet opens with his revelency? That's not only an insult to Obama, but it also insults the 24,000 people who showed up that night. Just becaue he won't run a smear campaign agains Hillary, it obviously frustrates the synics on MSNBC. Obama is a candidate none of you old school political pundits understand, and you obviously don't know how to deal with him. And instead of celebrating the fact that he's stayed above the fray by holding himself to a higher standard, Matthews, Carlson, Buchanan and whatever other pundits on MSNBC ridicule him for not stooping to that kind of dirty politics. Shame on MSNBC for that. You can almost see the saliva building on the sides of Cris Matthews' mouth leading up to the Democratic debate on Wednesday hoping that Barack would mud-sling against the other candidates. And again, shame on you for trying to facilitate such a poor attitude and example for our elected officials. "Making you affraid of it, and telling you who's to blame for it. That is how you win elections." A movie quoted that fits perfectly here. And you all are feeding at the same troth in this issue. Well, all except Barack. It's going to hilarious if this guy gets the nomination because it will confirm what I already know, and that is as much as Barack campaigns for a new kind of politics, we also need a new kind of political journalist and media personality to report on it.
Don't you guys see. This is a calculated move by MSNBC against Obama. They know damage is done by just putting this statement in the publics mind. Trust me it will continue on the nightly shows and on Sunday. No matter what we write in defense of Obama its not going to matter. They want to destroy him over the last debate.
"Democratic-controlled Congress" -- you've got to be joking. What is your definition of control? It would be more accurate to say Democratic majority congress.
I think by this message, you want us to think HRC is the winner.  I think the really smart people are just letting her think she is going to win - wouldn't that really tick her off to find out she has lost the nomination?  I agree - Obama and Edwards for '08.
I followed the link. The survey question was:
Do you approve or disapprove of
the way the U.S. Congress is
doing its job?
It did not ask for the approval of the "Democratic-controlled congress". Democrats do not control congress; they don't even have a filibuster proof majority much less a veto proof majority. Clearly some biased reporting here attempting to shift the blame from the President's control of congress.
Why are the Repub primary voters more satisfied with their candidates than they were in July? What changed? They're the same old stodgy, boorish bunch, whose ideas for any change embrace the caretaker mentality of petrified institutions committed to the law of the Republican party line, i.e., money runs uphill, crap runs downhill. Did the candidates run themselves through a car wash and then get themselves psychoanalyzed? Did they become born again Christians? If nothing changed with the candidates, then why did the voters just willy-nilly change their opinions of them? That raw statistic doesn't tell us much about the voters. We know that typically Republican voters hail from the lower tiers of the IQ scale, many of them still hanging on to the notion that voting for Bush was a good idea. Then are they also the ones most likely to do the same things over and over again and expect different outcomes each time - [the definition of insanity for those unschooled in psychobabble]. The least stupid half of the Bush voter base jumped ship quite a while ago, leaving them with the dregs of humanity, about a half dozen of whom haunt this blog daily, attempting to impress the rest of us with their daily brainwashing from watching FOX News.
If Obama's candidacy is so irrelevant, how come 25,000 people went to see him in NYC?  How come he has record  numbers of people donating to his campaign?

I don't know/care GAB. What makes all the liberals and hedonistic rabble of this country such angry haters of God loving, good moraled religious people? For the most part anymore, they ignore you. The "advancement" in social codes makes discrimination criminal. People always have and always will be discrimintory towards others that are not in thier group of course. But for the most part you can do as you will. Have public sex at naked fetish parades in San Fran. Go into the military, run for PONTUS. So since your so free, why is your group such angry haters of the rest of us? I see homo's as bigger bigots of hetro's then the other way around. Point of view I guess.
MSNBC IS saying Obama is irrelevant. DO they feel Obama supporters are irrelevant too? They must by putting this out. If we are irrelevant why do we continue to watch your news broadcast.  Imagine if all the Obama supporters decided MSNBC is irrelevant and tuned out!

I've always like First Read and thought you did a good job on balance but this one might require a retraction.  Quote "Some bullet points from LCG’s report:"  All of the heat being generated is over those bullet points. I followed the link and checked out all 22 pages of the report and could not find the bullet points. I suspect the bullet points came from First Read and not the report. If so, the quote was misleading and there was quite a bit of extrapolation going on.
I always laugh reading these posts. I would have assumed that correct spelling and punctuation would stand among liberal values. Must have been Bush screwing up the education system... though I would assume you were all out of school by then. Ah! Reagan! Right, sorry.
I think you answered your own question JIrby. More of them wise-up and jumped ship and that left behind (pun intended) a higher percentage of satisfied.
Sorry, you are all stupid fools.
Whoever trust your pitiable media has understood nothing at all.
Hands up from Europe!
I really don't agree with most of the above commentators have to say.  On the other hand, I truly believe that the First Read staff REALLY is trying to create close races out of obvious runaways like Clinton v. Obama and trying hard to make Edwards relevant.  Similarly, you folks at First Read are trying hard to get McCain back to relevancy.

Especially Mr Todd--you were much more objective at the National Journal.

Obama is a racist. He has made detrimental comments toward Indians. As an Indian-American I am glad he is losing. I will do anything in my power to help make this dude lose.
David shuster and Chris matthews just said that obama only had 15,000 at his rally in NY.. gee the NYTimes and every news outlet pegged the crowd at 24,000... wonder why MSNBC is mis-stating the size of the crowd by 40%?  Try to report facts, please, if you consider yourself an actual news organization.

Obama is gathering steam and will roll come january.

We may as well point out here that [US Dept.of Education,May,2006]that the state awarding the highest numbers per capita of bachelors-above degrees including the nations top leader in heart disease research[the founder of the JARVIK-7 artificial heart hails from its state university hospital],is Utah. A virtual Republican Ground Zero. FOX,the New York Times,NEWSWEEK,Olberman, what is the differance, other than there not being any?
This is a right wing rag, its all you have here. By the way Cheney is at a "top secret" right wing meeting in Salt lake City this weekend. Mitts in town but they won`t meet ? yeah right.
http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Cheney_to_address_top_secret_conservative_0928.html
The Neocons are all meeting to see how they can manipulate the media and refute the truth that they are morally bankrupt and in trouble.
Tuck is right about the 24,000 number for Obama.  As I read the article about it the statement was that they "expected" 24,000 and that the square had people clear to it's edges but that's because they were standing "outside" the fence bounderies, due to the security issue.  Once security opened up and let them all in, they did NOT fill the square.
JIrby - I wonder if they're more satisfied because they've finally decided what their choices are going to be.  They were holding out waiting for the "big fella" to finally stumble into the race and he really didn't bring much with him.
One more thing. Here is what the front page of the Lombardo Groups website says.
"LCG is a market research and communications consulting agency that provides strategic guidance through innovative research techniques, proven methodologies and strong multi-industry experience.

We provide brand positioning, crisis management and image advertising development research and counsel for our corporate clients.

We provide message development and attitudinal research for trade associations and non-profits that face difficult public policy issues.

We provide voter perception and candidate image-mapping to help our political clients win elections."

Obviously this site is working in conjunction with them to influence YOUR PERCEPTION.

Hey Chuck and D-

Welcome to the club! I don't feel so alone today. Thanks.

Van
It does not matter who the Republicans nominate, that person will lose. Because all the GOP has to offer is fear, ignorance, bigotry and more fear and the country is finally getting tired of this. There is not one Republican candidate worthy of running for dog catcher let alone president
Hey your guys, the real races are being played out this weekend on the professional baseball diamonds. Screw politics for a weekend and watch some races where polls don't count. This is exciting stuff. As the great American philospher, Yogi Berra said "It ain't over 'til it's over." Truer words spoken by a true genius.
Ah, yes, Mr. JIrby from Colorado once again trotting out the tired cliche about Republicans being stupid.
And Mr. Nuanced again proving the most ironical name on the blogs. At least you mustn't be so stupid to actually believe that MSNBC, home of Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann, is part of some rightist cabal?
