Obama on Tyra Banks show

Posted: Monday, October 01, 2007 2:32 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
Making his first appearance on a daytime talk show since announcing his presidential run, Sen. Obama told The Tyra Banks Show's audience about his first date with Michelle (Baskin Robbins ice cream), what is on his iPod (Jay-Z, Miles Davis, and classical music such as Bach ... and a little salsa music too) and who should play him in a movie (Denzel Washington or Will Smith).

On a more serious note, Obama said the prejudices he has faced throughout his life have made him more empathetic toward other people's problems. He also credited his mother with inspiration for his policy choices. When his mother was 53 years old, she died from ovarian cancer and the Illinois senator said the healthcare system did not treat her well. "Watching her dying and worrying about medical bills motivates me to make sure every American has health care."

As for his own parenting style, Obama said Michelle provides a perfect example for the girls as their role model because the two set limits for them. "Parents have to realize, kids want limits, they want structure," Obama said. "They don't want you to be their best friend; they want you to be the parent. If we had more parenting, then the kinds of influences we see on television don't matter."

Shifting to politics, Banks asked Obama about his statement at MSNBC's debate on Wednesday night that he would not promise to bring all troops out of Iraq by 2013. Obama told Banks he would start bringing troops home "in a very rapid fashion." And then he re-phrased the actual question, saying he was asked if he would keep some troops in Iraq "to carry out limited duties" such as guarding the embassy in Baghdad or having some counterterrorist forces to defend against Al Qaeda -- which Obama said he would.

In actuality, NBC’s Tim Russert, who moderated the debate, made no such qualifications. Here’s what he said: “Senator Obama, I'd like to start with you. General Petraeus in his testimony before Congress, later echoed by President Bush, gave every indication that in January of 2009 when the next president takes office, there will be 100,000 troops in Iraq. You're the president. What do you do? You said you would end the war. How do you do it in January of 2009?”

Banks talked about her brother Capt. Devon Banks, who is deployed in Afghanistan. She asked Obama to speak to him directly into the camera since he was watching, she said. "Devon, we are proud of you," Obama said. "We are grateful for your service. We want to get you back home as soon as possible. I know Tyra is thinking about you all the time, so make sure to send her emails all the time."

Obama ended his visit with Banks by playing some one-on-one basketball with Tyra Banks on set. But when she asked about a slumber party in the Lincoln bedroom, Obama told her he'd invite her to a BBQ on the South Lawn instead.

I never watched the Tyra Bank Show, but I programmed my TVO to watch it today.
Obama was down to earth and very nice.
The hour went so fast that I wish it was a 2hr show...
Good Job Tyra...Good Job OBAMA...

As a republican, I changed my party affiliation just for you.
Hi msnz911,
Your comment made me smile. Glad to know you can see what we (Obama's supporters) see. And that makes one wonder are the MSM blind or simply and arroganty biased?
To whom do wonders pall more rapidly then the hearts of the very young.
Go Obama!!! By far our nation's best candidate of any affiliation in many a year...

and since i had no luck posting my response to the sports article o the day on 2007 play-offs on a relatively FAIR playing field (except of course for the cheaters on hormones) GO BO-SOX!!!!
Actually, the 2013 troop removal was a question that came later and he gave a fair paraphrase.  You should check the transcripts before you dispute their accuracy...
Go Obama!!! Good job!!
Here's how it is:

Obama is the choice of the people.

Hillary is the choice of the Corporastocracy.

Rudy, Romney, Thompson and McCain are the choices of people who can't even tie their own shoes.
obama is nice- but reall hes ecentric ans chauvenistic and sarcastic- hes an ox year born 1961-hiltler 1889 and sadam hussien born 1939 or 37 three of tem an ox yera born-maniplutive and ecebtric stubborna dn easily angered in private.
ull find out the true atittude www. hosroscope.com
hiltler/hussiena ndoabam same birthyear attittude even though diffrent birthyear but same zodiac sign triats.good convincing people and manilpulator. dont eb naive. this si a phsychci lady comments.
obama go back to the senate arely two eyars ur expreience.
white america dont want to be whip by the black guy like you;are we underdog now to the black guy like obama?
Obama appears to be so down to earth and credible with his responses, that I am convinced even more he is the best candidate for President.  Alas, I feel the outcome will not change, America wasn't ready when the Rev. Jesse Jackson announced his candidacy and it still is not ready for man like Obama to become the next president, especially if he is NOT white.
Clearly Obama's a strong-willed man. I would have said yes to the slumber party!
Oh geesh, PRISCELA MTN. VIEW, CA, please do us all a favor, go back to school before you decide to post anything else. I mean if you represent the Clinton supporters that are out there, I see why she is in the lead!!! Education is the key to success sister!!! Maybe if you spent more time in books you wouldn't harbor such racist feelings!!

Way to go msnz911. I also changed my party to vote for Obama. He is the real deal. We need real change not cosmetic change.
Domenico - You're quoting the wrong Russert question, which is both misleading and inaccurate (I'm sure unintentionally so).  Please correct.  Thanks.
Yvette Turner---That is a big misconception, if people weren't ready for Obama to be president he wouldn't get so much support. Racist people want to scare people into thinking that the US is not ready for a "Black President". That is just pure ignorance, the only way to combat racism is to face it head on. I, for one am not voting for Obama because he is black, I am voting for him because of his stance on the issues that I care about the most.

But I hope people don't get fooled into not voting for him because he is black that would be a huge injustice and would speak wonders for the way that we are viewed internationally, especially in the wake of the Katrina disaster with many international audiences condemning how American treat their own.

I'd change my party for Tyra Banks.
I'm a 58-year-old Caucasian male who has voted for Democrats, Republicans and a couple of Libertarians over the years.  And I'm a Army veteran from the South.

We need change in this country and we need it desperately.  I believe Obama is the only candidate who can lead that change, and he will get my vote.

Domenico - You're quoting the wrong Russert question, which is both misleading and inaccurate (I'm sure unintentionally so).  Please correct.
Shadow, Hamden, CT

They quoted wrong? I figured there was some shenanigans a foot. Which question did they quote wrong?
I want to thank Tyra for having our next president on her show , but it never fails how a racist pig can make a good thing seem bad .I think America needs a change and Obama is the only that is going to a good President. I can also say this ,that he is not a pawn to specail interest groups  and think about that when you check his record . I have one last thing for you racist people who reads my comment, stop stealing from our people and give credit where it is due . Tyra ,you are a true queen and role model to women everywhere . THANK YOU

I saw the interview.  What struck me the most, was Obama's humbleness.  He is so relax and authentic it's so inspiring to see.  I like that he won't but the Lincoln bedroom up for sale for a slumber party, but will have a cookout on the south lawn.  That would be some party and a great visual.  God bless you Obama, may you remain strong in your truth and help us reclaim the shining ideals of America that has been so tarnished in the last twenty years.  Obama 08!
John Conrad, you are a great example of someone who makes informed decision. Just because you are a republican does not mean you always vote republican. You vote for who's going to address the things that need to be done and so far Obama has not shied away from the issues.
priscela,mtn. view,ca

WTF, this is hilarious you proved my point from the comment right above yours.  It's almost like no one could actually be this bad of a speller, I mean what did you do use bablefish to translate this from english to french to dutch to rascist idiot?
I have not been polled, and I know others who have not been polled, so Obama may not be in second place.

Just look at how many people who are given money to his camp.
I agree with Michael (above).  The question Obama referred to did come later and he gave an fairly accurate repetition of it.  Also, his answer was responsible, considering that there may be some troops carrying out non-combat responsibilities for awhile.  If he did not say that, the Republicans would cite him for wanting to "abandon" the effort thus far expended.
Tyra and Obama, wow, both are young and dumb.  It's time you Obama cult members stop your foolishness and jump on Hillary's wagon before it's too far down the road and you get left holding the bag.
When I first heard Obama speak, I knew he had the power to lead!  He wasn't known to anyone then, but I kept inquiring, 'did y'all hear that man speak?' He connects with the people.  Let's face it, the US is in bad shape, and realistically, it's going to take someone the world can trust to repair all the hurt and help ease the pain of American people.  No one can fix all the problems, but we'd like to know that someone in charge wants to help and will honestly try.  People ask if the US is ready for a Black man to lead?...well, were we ready for other black scientists & inventors such as George Washington Carver, Benjamin Banneker, Andrew Jackson Beard or Dr. Charles Richard Drew, etc., but "we" as Americans all enjoy their gifts they created for "us".  Let's do the right thing and cast the vote for a new direction, a brighter one.
Repulicans are the major contributors and support for Obama because they are afraid of Clintons political power. That is why the huge dollar is not reflected on the polls and in particular demoncratic endorsements. I am sure the group of Republicans are indeed desolutioned.
Go Hillary, Go.
Barak Obama major supporters and finanace contributors are Republicans bacuase the Republicans hate to see another good Clinton in the White House to undo all the damages inflicted on Americans by Bush. You remmember Greenspan words about Bush and Bill Clinton despite Greenspan being a Repulican.

Go Hillary Go. The nest President.
I'm impressed that Tyra asked some good questions, but Obama needs to stop pulling his punches, and fast.  The Democrats are following the herd and blindly following Clinton, seemingly ignorant of her immense negatives and  cynical nature - and they will follow her straight into defeat unless somebody offers an alternative.  Obama is the only one who can do it, but if he turns in one more phoned in performance in a debate and makes excuses for it, I'm done with him.
I loved it he was polite, sweet and honest.i just think that Tyra should of asked better questions, And not acted so modely. who care's if he can play basketball Sistah!Your the first Black president.
what is the connection between Michelle Obama and Baskin Robins ice cream?
what is the connection between Michelle Obama and Baskin-Robbins ice cream?
I will agree that Obama seems to be charming but I want the real questions answered like his view on abortion and same sex marriages and what he thinks he would have done after 9/11 and how does he plan on protecting our country from terrorist and illegals.  Have we all forgotten that we were attacked.  I like what he wants to try to do for insurance I am one that suffers so go for it.  I think he has some good qualities but I am not sold yet.  Oh, and color has nothing to do with my vote I'd vote for Colin Powell if he was running. The biggest question I have for Obama is where does he stand on freedom of speech for the very faith our country was built on and does he note what the name of that faith is?
Obama is a good Democrat and I wish him the best.  I too lost my mother to Ovarian cancer she was 56 also my sister died of ovarian cancer at 42.  I miss them every day and find my self going to the phone to call them it hurts still. The nightmare he speaks of resonates with me, the false hopes dished out with the $500.00 pills is the worst hurt of all.
Insurance companies are an abomination.

Go Hillary, Go

Ok I think we need to see some facts to support this.
This just proves a poll from a couple months ago that said uneducated democrats favor hillary.

Did you read this somewhere or do some kind of research project because that sounds like pure speculation.

I think bush voters and hillary voters probably have similar IQ scores...lower double digits
what is the connection between Michelle Obama and Baskin-Robbins ice cream?
ck , Perfectly put. But guys , Obama turned down tyra banks . Are you kidding me ,their should not be one christian that does not vote for this guy . I know he's married an all ,but are you kidding me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AMERICA HILLARY WAS THE FIRST LADY AND NOW WANTED TO BE PRESIDENT.WE MUST SAY NO TO HER BECAUSE IT'S BEEN BUSH'S AND CLINTON'S FOR TWENTY YEARS.LET STOP THE LIARING AND DESTORYING OUR COUNTRY.OBAMA AND HIS FAMILY WITH MELT OUR HEART'S.AMERICA WE'RE AT A CROSSROAD.LET DO IT'S FOR OUR COUNTRY AMERICA
Crystal - Please note, what I said earlier about America not being ready for a man like Obama, is not the ramblings of a racist, but a realist.  Part of my statement was "I am convinced even more he is the best candidate for President.", and another part was "... and it (America) still is not ready for MAN like Obama to become the next president, especially if he is NOT white".  Meaning, someone (Obama)who appears to be ready to hear the people is not what America is ready for even if he is who we need.  Too many with power and money (have always and still do)control what happens to the majority of Americans.  Sad but true. Sad but true.
Kayode Alli, please! republicans are just as afraid of Obama chances as you and Hillary are. That's why most of the pundits on TV talk him down so. The pundits are mostly republicans trying to convince they are democrats.

Obama support comes from people who are fed-up with the same old tired game in D.C., I think most of Hillary supporters are chicken hawks, who want the war to continue, only they want other people's children to do the fighting and dying.

I make barley above minimum wage, and I have gave over $100.00 to Obama, because I truly want him to win, and he needs money to compete. I think most of his support comes from people just like me. He has ober 75,000 new donors this quater.
Voting Hillary Clinton is like....well..like thinking 8 years of Bush disaster is still not enough. We will get the same crazy politics of putting Israel first instead of our own jobs and lives. America wake up from your zionist nightmare!
Some peole are delusional.  Hillary  agenda is Bush continue.  If you can't get it right when your husband Bill was in the office how are you going to do it now.  Hilary is just money hungry $$$$$$$$$$$$$$  We don't need continuing of Bush. The media is always pushing Hillary down our throats. It is time for change and Obama can do that.  We need to get past color.  I'm  voting for the best Candidate and that is Obama, He is more down to earth Obam08.   Clinton$$$$$$$Money Hungry
Obama 08
$$$$$$$Money is their policy
Hes the one that will prove that others in government thinks Americans are just like the mattrix nothing but energy to their crime organization Its about time america is run by the citzens and not a hand full of white collar criminals. The city I live in thinks more about a run down gm building then their own school system and are trying to get the government to support their cause with funds how crazy are they its not happening to turn there nose up at small businesses will be their down fall this I promise! Say veto the funds  George Bush Dayton ideals are lost causes money can be spent in better places.
A man of character, a man that could have taken the path to power and unlimited wealth after college and instead chose to be a community organizer...Oooobama! Michelle O says it best when she recants Barack's reply to her questioning his choice (organizer vs. big time lawyer),  "I studied the law so that I could change it for the better rather than amass power!"
I am campaigning for Obama so that there is a chance of reversing the mess Bush and company have created! Fired up, ready to go!!!
hillary '08...

young and dumb? i understand your unwavering support from your name, but young and dumb? i can almost surely say obama is an intellectual, and problably reasonably 'smarter' than hillary clinton, but that's either here nor there.

by the way, who wants another product of 1960's college vietnam protest wars? i'd rather have someone who missed that whole thing because they were too young. i'm tired of it.
Hillary goose is cooked.
Obama '08!
Did they sniff coke together?
Kayode, you just proved that HRC supportors have lower educational than other canidates.  Your first post was correct- nothing. Democrats, Independents and disgruntled Republicans are donating to Obama.  Obama is the only canidate that can lead the United States of America and not just the blue states of America.
