Edwards raises $7 million

Posted: Monday, October 01, 2007 3:12 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Edwards
raised $7 million in Q3 and has $12 million cash on hand; the campaign claimed as well to have potentially $22 million cash on hand with the help of matching funds.

Adviser Joe Trippi said on a conference call with reporters that the discussion of public financing started about two months ago and cited an impetus to do it after the lobbying discussion heated up at the YearlyKos Convention in Chicago.

The Edwards campaign has maintained that its goal all along has been to raise $40 million and this, they say, keep them on track as they've now raised more than $30 million. But clearly this is much less than Clinton and Obama. The campaign tried to spin hard the decision to take matching funds by railing against Clinton's tactics in raising money from PACs and lobbyists. "There's a distinction between us and Hillary Clinton," Trippi said.

But when asked about the fact that Obama is not taking money from PACs and lobbyists either in raising money, they turned it back to Clinton and even said, "Obama in his Senate race did take PAC and lobbying money."

Earlier in the call, Deputy Campaign Manager Jonathan Prince was more complimentary toward Obama's fund-raising efforts.

"There is tremendous grassroots enthusiasm for change," Prince said. "He’s [Obama] obviously had a very good quarter. We’re happy with where we are. We continue to grow our contributor base. Another 50,000 contributors this quarter. We have plenty for what we need."

Well, it's easy to be cynical about Edwards decreased contributions and the 'inevitability' of Hillary.  But if that happens, Hillary will almost certainly be going home to ... well, whereever her home is ... just as Edwards will be going home to Carolina.

Time to look at the history of the last 40 years and learn from it, folks.  Edwards is the only likely winner of this whole group.  There's this little thing known as the electoral college ...
Money should not buy the nomination - at some level, that is what is wrong with the government. I have liked Edwards since he ran with John Kerry. I am keeping fingers crossed that a really good guy can overcome the money monster and win the White House. We need John Edwards now.
It all comes down to Iowa for Edwards. If Edwards wins Iowa, it's a new ballgame. On the otherhand, if Edwards loses Iowa it's all over for his campaign.
$7 Mil?  That doesn't even pay the monthly power bill on his house.
There's nothin' wrong with John.
So, which of the viable candidates doesn't have a big house and heaps of money? Is Willard poor? Do Giuliani and McCain have trouble paying for all the homes of all of their ex-wives and many mistresses?
That $400 haircut looks like a bargain basement deal compared to Nancy Reagan having her hairdresser jet all over the world with her for 8 years AT OUR EXPENSE. What did that cost? $100 thou/year or $2 thou/week? Maybe more - she probably fed him Chilean bass and Dom Perignon on those 'round the world 'goodwill' tours. And, she wasn't even the president. Well, not most of the time, anyway. Only when the old man couldn't remember his lines. And, what about the enormous expense of using the Secret Service to keep the drunken bush girls out of jail, or the drunken veep after he shot that human turkey? On balance, I don't think that the republicans would win if they brought up the silly haircut during the campaign.
