Giuliani shrugs off third-party threat

Posted: Monday, October 01, 2007 4:53 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger and NBC's Andy Merten
OCEAN VIEW, N.J. -- A day after Christian conservative leaders suggested they might support a third-party candidate if Giuliani got the Republican Party's nomination Giuliani said he was not focusing the issue.

"I'm working on one party right now, the Republican Party," he said after visiting patrons at Dino's Seaville Diner. "This is a long primary, and once there are nominees on either side, we'll figure that out."

The campaign touted its conservative credentials in an e-mail to reporters today, citing his record in New York City on cutting taxes, lowering the abortion rate and eliminating pornography from Times Square. He even got a boost from the Club for Growth, which sent out a letter (in response to Steve Forbes’ letter to them in support of Giuliani) reaffirming their support for Giuliani's fiscal discipline. The group had openly questioned Giuliani's commitment to not raise Social Security taxes last week.

Although Giuliani was asked the question about social conservatives twice, he used each opportunity to address two other pertinent Republican issues -- his fiscal conservatism and his electability against Hillary Clinton.

“I think each one of the Democrats is going to have to tell us exactly how much they are going to increase federal spending -- when you add up the taxes, the increases they’ve talked about, and the spending they’ve talked about, we’re entitled to know how much,” he said.  He then went on to criticize an initiative touted by Clinton on Friday, while speaking to the Congressional Black Caucus, in which she called for $5,000 “baby-bonds” for every child born in America, accessible upon graduation from high school.

And after being asked if the potential of losing the Christian right vote harms his viability as a general election candidate, Giuliani returned to his competitiveness against Clinton.

“Every poll shows that I would be, by far, the strongest candidate against Hillary Clinton,” he said, adding, “There hasn’t been one taken in the last six or seven months that shows anything other than I’m the Republican that has the best chance to beat her.”

He concluded by saying he hopes to put the formerly Democratic-leaning states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut into play next year. Giuliani also sidestepped whether he agreed with John McCain about the United States being a Christian nation.

"Our country was founded on principles that come from God," he said, before quoting the "freedom of religion" sections of the Bill of Rights. Giuliani seemed to enjoy his chit-chat with diners Monday. The conversation focused heavily on baseball, including the Philadelphia Phillies' upset of the New York Mets in the National League East pennant race, and football, including the Giants' win over the Eagles Sunday night.

If Giuliani is too liberal for them, I'd suggest the National Socialist White Peoples Party. It really reflects those poor disenfranchised Repulican's values.
Why not? He shrugged off 9/11 clean-up hazards, and pre- 9/11 safety concerns from the FDNY. We could call him "President Shrug and Hug."
B U S H   S U C K S  !
The republican party no longer represents conservative values.  So whats the big deal. We've tolerated the most liberal president in history for the last 6 years.
So apparantly Giuliani doesnt hate enough for the Christian base. Maybe they could draft David Duke.
Rudy Tutti just isn't smart enough to see trouble coming - like, for example, already planning a run at the White House feeding off 9/11 and nothing else, then blowing off the 9/11 commission. He's one of those "educated idiots," people.

If the right wing is as disgusted by him as I am about democrats voting to condemn free speech (especially when every election they've lost in 6/8/or 10 years has been due to hate speech, rumor, character assassination, etc. from Herr Rove), then a 3rd party is something that twit SHOULD think about. (About as presidential as.......Scooby-Doo, or GWB. Twigit.)
Speaking of the ''disenfranchised''[and the Ist Amendment, while we are about it],we now have another Soros-fracas brewing with Armed Forces Radio. It seems that Soros does not like Rush Limbaugh[heh]. And is using his money and clout to get him kicked off the channel.[Here, leftwingers, propelled by an unfactual rewording of the ''phony soldiers''remarks made by Limbaugh recently that appeared on MEDIA MATTERS,went ape and demanded his head. However, when the EIB Network provided the exact text of Limbaughs rant,it turned out that the man was contextually correct. Individuals who tried to pass themselves off as real serving combat soldiers were in fact, exposed by the DOD as ''phony soldiers''.[including falsification of decorations/medals]. Rush can be,like his leftwinged opposites,a true boor. But here he was being truthful, and caused Soros to launch a controversy[Kerry as well],where none previously existed. This is merely more leftwinged garbage in trying to usurp constitutional rights by angling for their equally phony ''fairness doctrine'' as it applies to radio and television.
In 1980 almost all of the current rep candidates would have been considered right wing nutjobs by their own party...these guys all want to jail women for having abortions, drive gays back into the underground, start a nuclear war to make us safer and cut taxes of course...rudy rudy rudy
Rudy is a authoritarian liberal drag queen. It's scary enough that a man like that was mayor, please lets not give a person like this the keys to the presidency. You think Bush is bad, just wait till Rudy gets there. Fred Thompson seems like Bush Jr. 2.0.

"Our country was founded on principles that come from God,"

guiliani talking about god is absolutly hypocritical, since his track record shows he has no morals whatsoever, a more disgusting man you will not find
Looks like Giuliani...the GOP's best hope, is a poison pill to their own party. I think Gingrich was right about Dems getting the White House. Thompson is unimpressive and Romney is faultering already.
The best thing that could happen for our country is for the extreme right wing of the Republican party, which has dominated since Reagan, to split off from the mainstream Republicans.  Perhaps that will shine a nice big bright white light on them and show us all who they really are....bigotted, authoritarians with an agenda to remake America and Americans in their own image.  It will be a pleasure to watch the party implode.
A national party to the right of the Republicans? Yeow! Amerika Uber Alles!
Hey Rudy, the only way you Republicans can put NJ, PA, and CT into serious play next year is to rustle up some racial conflict.
Where's Mitt?
