Fred: Saddam had WMD

Posted: Monday, October 01, 2007 7:05 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum and NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
In Newton, IA this morning, Thompson said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction at some time prior to the United States' involvement in Iraq.

"We can't forget the fact that although at a particular point in time we never found any WMD down there he clearly had had WMD," Thompson told a crowd of about 200 at the Midtown Cafe. "He clearly had had the beginnings of a nuclear program. And in my estimation his intent never did change. And by today, he clearly would have had that rejuvenated. Especially looking at what Iran said that it's doing."

More: "And what you would have had was a part of the world, sitting on all that oil and oil reserves that would be in danger of going much more nuclear than they are today. Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia that can afford pretty much anything it wants to afford, it's already got missiles from Pakistan, and could probably get much more than we would like it to get in terms of nuclear capability from Pakistan In response to what they were seeing going in their neighborhood. So that's what we averted and that's what we successfully averted."

On college education: ‘I don’t know’… again
Fred Thompson once again relied on his old "I don't know" defense when asked by a college-aged cook at cafe about a bill sponsored by Sen. Ted Kennedy meant to help make college more affordable. "Senator Kennedy's got so many bills," Thompson said. "I must say I don't know about the one you're probably talking about, but I know about your situation. I've been there."

Thompson, who put himself through college and law school in Tennessee while supporting his first wife and three children, said he paid off his college loans "about the same time my first child started college."

"I don't think we're in a position or we're ever going to be in a position where we can guarantee everyone four years of college from the federal treasury," Thompson said, adding that he was "mindful of the need for more education and better education in this country."

America’s a Judeo-Christian nation
Speaking to reporters after the event, Thompson defended rival McCain's statement that the United States is a Christian nation. "Factually, the Judeo-Christian heritage of the United States is certainly a fact. I don't know what he said past that. But I think that is in fact the fact."

When asked if he would vote for a Muslim (McCain also said "it doesn't seem like a Muslim candidate would do very well"), Thompson said he would not rule anyone in or out. "You come with a particular candidate and a hypothetical situation in the future, I can't say that I would vote for or against anybody in any category."

But, he did bring in the current war on terror and America's hesitation toward Muslims. "Obviously, we have real, real problems," Thompson said. "We have a major long standing threat to this nation about radical Islam. There are a lot of Islamic individuals and citizens of this country who are not radical, who are very good citizens. I'm not going to categorically say that at any time in the future, I would or would not vote for anybody. "

Appeal to Conservatives
Thompson talked about a meeting he had with the Arlington Group and said he would be happy for any reporter to speak with them. "I talked about my background, where I was coming from, and to a certain extent myself as an individual," he responded. "I think we left there on very friendly terms, but they will have to answer that."

Appeal to Independents
Later in the day, Thompson addressed a sleepy crowd over lunch at Tremont on Main in Marshalltown, IA. The crowd of about 60 people seemed nonplused by the candidate's speech, treating it much like a lecture with little applause or laughter. Thompson was even forced to finish his speech by saying, "First of all can I have a round of applause," admitting that he had to "drag" it out of them. On the street after the lunch, two independent voters, Kathy Larson and Mary Brooks, said that they were pretty disappointed by what they heard.

"I have a couple friends who urged me to come to hear him because she said he crosses party lines," Larson said. "So I, in good faith, came. But I didn't hear specifics...no substance, you know, feel good. Well I don't feel good."

"He was so vague," Brooks added.

"And folksy and feel good, but that doesn't cut it," Larson said. "We really wanted to know about foreign policy, and I don't think he said much about it at all."

"I want to hear some diplomacy, not just force and action," Brooks said. "We're looking for the individual who's going to represent our country and not just continue on with this one-sided we are the most powerful country in the world. We're losing. We're losing respect."

Fred's got it right.  Way to go Fred!
and reagan was a good president too.

LOL
Thompson, given his statements on Iraq WMD, has bought the GOP's own propaganda.  How sad... and a kiss of death to independent voters.
Thompson is a very intelligent robot who was manufactured in the heart of hicktown hating everyone who is not like him.
Thompson is a joke.  He's towing the establishment line just like all the other mainstream candidates.  Ron Paul is the only candidate, Republican or Democrat, worth voting for.  GO RON PAUL!!
I've always liked the guy, but it is now clear Thompson is truly an absolute idiot.
We have had Ron Paul in our district (Tx-14th) for quite some time, now....He is a part of us.
He holds our values as his own and fights for us.
Us..
The tax payer.
The middle class...
The NON wealthy.
The concerned.
The scared.
The weak.
The poor.
The defenseless.
The drugged.
The sick.
The aged.
We are proud of him and we are letting America know that if Ron for some reason is not our 44th President, he will always have a place right here in his Tx-14th.
We are Democrats and always vote for Ron because he holds our values better than any politician we have come across....
He unites us and does not divide.
He is truthful beyond compare.
His vision excites us.
His words comfort us.
We love him and we trust him.(Although he states one should never trust government nor should they be requested to do so.)

We know what has come out of Texas in the past.
Believe me, WE KNOW.
We are so very sorry that our area could be capable of serving up such a "destructionist". Oh, how sorry we are. and embarrassed.

We have no right to ask anyone to go to Rons website, but in the faith of humanity and our own very existence we would ask for you to do exactly this.
Go to his website. Interact, if you like. Read. Contemplate.
Whatever you wish, just please go and try to visualize some of what Ron talks about. (He draws an exciting picture, this we promise!)
ronpaul08.com
His truth and honesty will draw you in.
His knowledge of the constitution
and foreign policy will amaze you.

When we tell you Ron Paul can save us, that would be misleading. What we can tell you is that we can all be saved USING Ron Paul as a conduit.
A CONDUIT back to the Constitution and back to liberty and justice for everyone.

Some will say bad of Ron, listen to them not.
Go to the website and look for yourself..
Dedicate some time.
Ask questions.
Have an open mind and realize we have been lied to.
Realize their is some one who is running for president that can unite us ALL and bring us to a standard that we are all dreaming of.
Peace, Prosperity and liberty for every one.
One nation under God, Not Wall Street.

Thank You NBC. I hope you are beginning to see what the people want. It can be done now, or it can be done later...One way or another the people WILL have their say.

It is without a doubt, the most frustrating slate of candidates we have encountered in my 70 years...and I have been voting for 52 of those years - REPUBLICAN!!!
Mostly what I hear from friends that we are now present at the game, and we want to see some points scored! But so far, it seems like a preseason warm-up. That could be in our favor because dems don't, and repubs do. Senator Thompson is the one most likely to take the ticket. However, we really have not heard a full-slated debate, and we need to. As for Senator Thompson not answering some questions for some people; what do they want to hear, A LIE or some off-the-cuff cutesy remark??? The MAN is honest, and up front which is more than most; he is not a flip-flopper. No, Folks, we are not going to have "the perfect" candidate, we never have. What we really need to do is give an I.Q. test to voters before they register, and this would really take care of business in a sensible way. We are talking about character and integrity here, People, and that may come in different packages for some, but if the morals and scruples are there, truly there, then a conscience of real concern must be in there, near the heart - and that is where America is alive...we must have a Godly MAN who possesses those qualities, that should be a requirement.
Fred is not going to be a Bush clone he is going to be a Cheney clone. Shades of Bagdad Bob.

Thank You NBC. You are our fave of the MSM 4..
I hope you are beginning to see what the people want. It can be done now, or it can be done later...
One way or another the people WILL have their way.
I grew up in Newton and that has to be the stupidest man to ever walk through the town.

Fred is brain-dead, y'all.
BUSH SUCKS.
Sounds like the folks at Tremont on Main were listening to the wrong candidate.  The only Republican candidate who would materially alter this administration's foreign policy is Ron Paul.  Voters interested in real change should check out www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/war-and-foreign-policy/
Go back to LA Fred, Arthur Branch was never a brain surgeon, but he sure was not as dumb as you are in real life.  Guess that is why you were on Law and Order and not on CSI, right?
.....and now you know why Thompson's campaign and his candidacy aren't going anywhere. Can you say "out of touch"?
This is the leader of the Republican presidential primary.
down there?

Fred, Iraq is not in South America. Someone please check his viagra levels!

"Factually, the Judeo-Christian heritage of the United States is certainly a fact. . . . I think that is in fact the fact."

Fred, are you sure or would you like more time to ponder this one.

"I'm not going to categorically say that at any time in the future, I would or would not vote for anybody."

Fred, could you be more specific?
This gas bag is going to go down harder than the Hindenburg. What a maroon!
But this gas bag has also bagged about $8 million so far.

I think the United States is going down like the Hindenburg.
I am more convinced that Fred is the right man for the job with every shot the Libs and the liberal media take at him.  They feel threatened by him.  They know that he represents a good portion of Americans.  I keep hearing that Fred doesn't give specifics but that just means they aren't listening or reading what he stands for.  Fred is about Conservative Principles.  He doesn't have some bogus 10 step plan that every candidate promises and fails to deliver on.  He believes we need to return to our roots and be a country that is strong militarily, financially and morally.  Few other candidates even care about the core issues of this country.
Keep believing Fred's campaign is going nowhere.  He has grown in the polls by large numbers, is leading in several states and didn't even get started until the beginning of last month.  People want to compalin about his "laid back and folksy" style.  They are just used to hearing lies and garbage flow freely from Hillary and Obama.  Liberals can't think for themselves, they need Hillary to tell them how to think.
Fred is dead .Fred is dead. I guess it was old Ronald Reagan looking down and didn't like others using his name to build up another old fool like himself.
What a chadrool! Rick Santorum pulled this WMD routine last year, and the media and the nation laughed him out of office. If you are the hope of the Republican party, Freddie Boy, then your party is in deep trouble, as it should be.
"I am more convinced that Fred is the right man for the job with every shot the Libs and the liberal media take at him."

Neocons are very easy to sway - the right wing counts on it.

"They feel threatened by him."

I feel threatened my the unchecked stupidity and fear mongering of all right wingers.

"They know that he represents a good portion of Americans."

Yup - really, really stupid ones, and they are legion.

"I keep hearing that Fred doesn't give specifics but that just means they aren't listening or reading what he stands for."

A buffet line?

"Fred is about Conservative Principles."

Like Bush and Cheney? Those can't really be called "principles."

"He doesn't have some bogus 10 step plan that every candidate promises and fails to deliver on."

George did, but it WAS bogus, and he failed. Better off not promising anything, and then trying to deliver on it.

"He believes we need to return to our roots and be a country that is strong militarily, financially and morally."

And with slaves for the rich. But I thought neocons didn't like Hollywood?

"Few other candidates even care about the core issues of this country."

And here's one more.
Dave in TN-You are such a loyal kool-aid drinker!  <Conservative Principles> After 7 years of such values: 1) Record deficits that equals 42 previous presidents COMBINED; 2)_military dangerously streched; 3) unprotected boarders; 4)protecting pedophile (Foley);5)condoning Vitters crucifing Clinton; 6) Secret wire tapping w/o warrants; 7) Shrinking middle class; 8)millions uninsured and you have the temerity to say that Fred DEADHEAD Thompson is going to bring the country back to the surplus/balance budget days(Only Johnson/Clinton) and morally (Delay, Cunningham, Ney, Foley, Craig, Stevens, etc) YEAH RIGHT.DREAM ON!
Joyce Byers - a Godly man who posesses those principles?  Then Fred is not your man, he won't even go to church unless he visits his mom and she makes him (per his own mouth).  so don't count him as your conservative savior.  If you really want true conservatives, fisical and Christian then you should be voting for a Huckabee/Paul ticket. Otherwise you are a phoney conservative only concerned with keeping the repugnants in power so the oil companies, insurance companies and drug companies can continue to rape the middle class.
But, after all, this is the USA - we don't seem to care if our leaders have any sense or think about what they did all day after they get home at night, now do we?  If we did we would never have allowed georgie to be crowned king of the land.  I am totally middle of the road (once had a college professor tell me I was the most liberal conservative he had ever met) so I know what a real conservative is and what a real liberal is.  Don't need either extreme to run my life.
If money were not important in politics Ron Paul would be our next president.
Oh and David in Texas - we have had 7 years of folksy non-substance. Our party and nation can’t take another uninformed but likable guy.

This is the tip of the issue. Read any local paper reports where he has been - he doesn’t know the issues he should.

In Iowa he can’t talk about farm and ethanol subsidies. He goes to Florida and cant talk about off-shore and everglade drilling (a big federal issue in Fl). He can’t hold a conversation about health care, education, or defense spending. The only thing his camp has done right is keep him out of the debates. He can "pithy" his way thru what is left - he'da never survived all of them.
Actually, this is not the first time that Thompson has mistakingly maintained that Sadaam held WMDs at the time of US invasion in 2003. The first comment was an even more egregious deception than the current controversy. Of course the media, including CNN, let the first gaffe slide as it was buried within another misstatement about the threat of Bin Laden. Y'all have got to get the whole story at
http://wecouldbefamous.blogspot.com/
"What we really need to do is give an I.Q. test to voters before they register, and this would really take care of business in a sensible way"-Joyce Vaughan Byars

You got that right, Joyce! It would knock out about 75% of the Republican party!!
And there's an Easter Bunny, too.
Why is Fred Thompson trying to placate the Bush people by bringing up past history, history that clearly points out the Bush arrogant deception and irresponsibility that got us into an unjustified war that has only benefited Special Interests and a select few, and to support that original, now totally debunked, position?  This guy really wants to be the next 'puppet' of those 'Special Interests and select few' who now direct, control, support and back Bush.  You want 'more of the same' he's your man.  God forbid!
Thompson's already backtracking!!

From the Des Moines Register,

"Thompson later said he was referring to Saddam’s attack on Kurdish northern Iraq with banned weapons in the 1980s".

All right to the remaining idiots still using this argument to defend their boys Bush & Freddie, let me explain it to you (and I'll use little words so you can understand). The WMD that the American public was lied into believing existed were the so-called "stockpiles" of nuclear weapons buried all over Iraq. They were not TWENTY year old mustard/sarin gas containers which, when found, contained inert agents no longer viable as weapons. This lame attempt to justify the false claim of WMD under the pretext of something that happened over TWENTY YEARS AGO is B.S. and the American public isn't falling for it again! Quit trying to lie your way out of the Republican fiasco in Iraq.

OMG! In his latest photos, Fred is beginning to look like... Homer Simpson. OMG!
A very interesting group of comments on this website.  However, if you want to bash someone's IQ, try spelling your insults correctly;  moron, not maroon.
President Bush killed Saddam & now Fred Thompson wants to ressurect him. Dang Fred he dead & buried & no weapons of mass destruction have been found. Talk about beating a dead horse oh I stand corrected a dead man. Fred try to be revelant it is October 3, 2007. Read a newspaper or a book about what is going on in the world  today.
