FUNDRAISING: Primary vs. General
USA Today takes a look at the candidate-by-candidate breakdown of money raised for the Democratic primaries as compared to the general election. Clinton leads here: "Overall, about 22% of the money she has raised since January has been set aside for a battle against a Republican, compared with about 5% of Obama's funds and about 7% of John Edwards' campaign money."
The
New York Times correctly notes the bigger surprise from yesterday's Clinton money release. "Perhaps most surprising was that the Clinton campaign reported attracting at least 7,000 more new donors than Mr. Obama, depriving his campaign of the bragging rights that he was more popular with contributors despite Mrs. Clinton’s strong performance in opinion polls and televised debates."
The most important figure, which hasn’t been released by most will be cash on hand, the
Boston Globe rightly notes: “Former senator John Edwards, lumped in a cluster with Obama and Clinton in polls of voters in the first-caucus state of Iowa, raised a distant $7 million in the quarter. He has said he plans to accept public financing that could boost his overall fund-raising by about $10 million. He reported having $12 million cash on hand. The cash-on-hand figure will be a key measure of strength as the campaigns head into one of the most expensive stretches. Neither Clinton nor Obama reported how much money they had left in the bank.”
