As promised, Bush vetoes SCHIP

From NBC’s John Yang (from the White House) and NBC’s Mike Viqueira (from Capitol Hill)

President Bush vetoed the SCHIP bill at about 10 a.m. this morning. In her on-the-record, off-camera gaggle, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said that after vetoing the bill, President Bush is open to negotiating a deal with congressional Democrats. "The president is willing to listen to ideas ... with the focus on how do you get back to the original intent" of the program.

Asked whether he had reached out to Democrats on the issue, Perino said Pennsylvania Avenue is "a two-way street" and there have been no overtures from the Democrats. Instead, she said, they have "used a lot of different ways to demagogue the issue against the president."

Perino said they have no reason to doubt House Minority Whip Roy Blunt's confidence that the House will sustain the veto.

House Democratic leaders have decided to put off an override vote on the SCHIP veto until October 17. There will, however, be an hour of House floor debate at some point this afternoon on a procedural motion. Dems are also planning a press conference this afternoon. The motion will essentially call for delayed consideration of the override vote. It will pass.

Why put it off? To let the suspense build, and in the meantime pound the living daylights out of Republicans who might be anxious about voting with the president, in the hopes that they will cave. Speaker Pelosi says she needs 15 of them to override. She doesn't mention that she lost eight Democrats (out of 231) when the bill initially passed the House.

The veto message is expected to arrive at the House at 11:45 a.m.

I veto Bush----Just wish congress had the guts to do it
Yes, bush"THE CHILD ABUSER" should be impeached for abusing needy American kids.  I am sure Jesus is proud of bush and all those who abuse kids.  Where is the religious community when kids need help?
How can he sleep at night? During his 6 years 8+ months this is his 4th veto. He didn't veto GOP pork laden spending bills, no he twice vetoed embryonic stem cell research, vetoed a time table for withdrawal from Iraq, and now health insurance for low income children. The man lacks a soul!
How do you veto health care for poor and working class kids? You spend more money on a pointless war in Iraq. President Bush should get his priorities straight. Our children deserve healthcare.
Let the far left socialists moveon.org and it's funder Soros scream to high heaven about Bush. But as with the rest of the looney's who support them have to understand the the silent majority is sick and tired of just politics from Pelosi and Reid, Soros and Babs. They think by using this bill that revives welfare giving benefits to people who already have coverage, that they will win back the white house. Ya Right, this country will never vote for a George Soros socialist state as he and Hillary want. Get over it liberals, you had your chance to govern, but you chose to use the pulpit for politics and Bush bashing.
Good! I hate sick kids. Death to sick American kids! If they had any sense of patriotism they'd pay their own way to Iraq and use their last, little breath to kill someone.  God bless George Bush - endless funds for war (and war profiteers)  squat for sick American kids. He's a president for all rich Americans with no regard for how they got their money (even collaborating with Hitler).
I just can't wait to see how our resident automatons goose step to this tune.
Of course he vetoed the bill .. that would mean less money for the war games he is currently playing with the american taxpayer.
Thanks, Don. You didn't make me wait long. It's George Soros' fault.
soo sad to read this i was having a paper on this issue and soo hoping things will be in the positive. are we advocating for health for all at the same time blocking its access to the vulnerable. Please reconsider.
DonS .. are you stupid or just on drugs? The american people are over the right wing war mongers who have done Nothing since 9/11 other than invent a war and allow thousands of americans to die.  Furthermore, thanks to the Bush GOP, we now have the biggest government in the history of this nation. Why do you thinks that Dems are raising so much money ..the american people are over the GOP  ... no more GOP losers in the WHite HOuse.
DonS- the only reason Bush vetoed this is because the 'private sector' can't get in on making any bucks off it.  That's all it is.  IF the fat-cat corporations could make a profit on it, Bush would have insited $35B was not nearly enough, and you know it.  "Bush Bashing"?  What the hell is that?  If a guy's a dumb prick, why not call 'em like we see 'em?
He's happy to get an extra $150 billion for a war we shouldn't even be in, and yet $35 billion for the welfare of our children is unacceptable to this mad man.  Why is this Republican so paranoid about the socialization of medicine?  It's a short term fix for poor children.  Even if a few "not-so-poor" children or families take advantage, isn't it worth it if millions of additional "very-deserving" people and children get additional coverage?

And by the way you imbecile, it's way cheaper to extend this coverage now in the form of preventative care than it will be when these people are terminally ill because they lacked proper health care.  Pick up a paper, try reading it (without moving your lips) and see if you can learn something about this country you’re supposed to be running.
"Give me the money for my war  --  no strings attached  --  and MAYBE I'll do something for those kids ... and, uh ... you go first ... "

And they will, too.
you are a very sick minded person. not all people who have or need health insurance are sick or dying. you probley have it too. i think yo uneed to go hug someone and take that stick outa your butt.
I am an administrative law judge, who conducts hearings requested by medicaid recipients.  I KNOW how much this expansion is needed.  I deal with it every day......this makes me ill....
Bush has an evil heart. He cares not for poor children, young men dying for his oil war, or anyone one else. He doesn't care about the enviroment, the middle class squeeze, education, leaving a deficit that could destroy us, or what the world thinks of us. He is a selfish individual who only cares about his legacy. He does not even care about the future, only his time here on earth. He is an evil dictator right down to his black skull & bones heart.
mr.American Facist- no all people have health insurance because they are sick, they need it for dental costs and regular doctor vists, but cant afford it. i want to say i believe you have a very sick point of view, though intiled to your opinon, i must say i disagree intirely with you.
About time!
Spending by Congress is out of control. This bill is nothing but a welfare program with the dems buying votes, by giving more taxpayers money sesy.
why do we all put up with this every 4-8 years?  Every time there is an elections we hear, Health care reform, maybe we should just do it instead of saying it.  If need be we should take back our Country from all of the rich people who make the rules.  Any body in Congress, or the Senate or President they have health care no matter what.  What about all of us?
Haliburton, Blackwater ad infinitum.  No government contract is too expensive for these well connected Bush buddies.  No amount of money is too much for Bush's war.  But health care for Americans, care for children?  Whoa!  That's a budget buster!  Over a billion dollars in government contracts to Blackwater alone, a company with a little over 1000 employees.  Hired killers.  But Bush sees a real threat in middle class Americans draining the Treasury through children's health care.  Bush and the Republicans always have an excuse or a boogey man.  It's the only way they can govern.  We could save a lot of money if we cut out health care completely for the likes of Bush and Cheney.  Hey, why not?  Let Cheney take a cab or a bus to Group Health next time he has an "event".   This crowd is shameless.
About time!
Spending by Congress is out of control. This bill is nothing but a welfare program with the dems buying votes, by giving more taxpayers money away.
George Bush, the "Compassionate Conservative"? What a joke!
In case no one has noticed, the Reds aren't a threat anymore.  So that "Socialist" stuff is, in the words of Alberto "quaint."  We are the only industrialized nation, and the richest nation, not to secure universal health coverage for our citizenry.  We should be ashamed.  Christians should be ashamed. Seems like Christ said our morals shows in how we treat the least among us.  I can't believe the working class people who carry the water for the filthy rich. Yeah,Don... let George Soros and Barbara Striesand keep more of their money. That's showin' em.  How about Paris Hilton and Janet Jackson too? Yeah, we'll show those liberals.
Bush has all americans hating each other---yup---he is a uniter all right.
Our president has lost his marbles, has unraveled, is out of his stupid, friggin mind.. and is attempting to run the US. Now thats a SCAREY Halloween!!!
He did the right thing, we need a good plan to take care of the children who need it the most, not to score political points.  It was a bad bill to begin with.

George Soros can scream all he wants to.  He was found out to be a fraud yesterday.  Now he has to get with Media matters/founded by Hillary Clinton.
I'm a smoker that lives right on the cusp of the poverty line. I am also a liberal. andIi will be gd'd
if my taxes skyrocket so people making MORE (two or three times as much) money than me, can get insurance for their children for free. I understand the huge costs of raising a child, which is why I don't have any. If you want children, then I suggest you you think about your finances before doing so. Unless we're talking about universal coverage for every person, I am not interested. Not even for your kids.
Of course he vetoed it.  Government should take care of the poor but NOT the not-poor (ever hear of "limited government").  Let's wait until a Democrat gets elected president before pushing universal health care (and its costs) through again.  Unless, everyone here is willing to let Hillary/Barack/John decide which doctor they go to.
It's an extra 150 billion for one year of war, or 35 billion for years of health coverage.

but you can't pay off haliburton or mercenaries with Child and infant health care.

Everyone in Illinois needs to phone Judy Biggert:

She voted against this bill even though most in Illinois and the country support giving uninsured children health insurance.  Let her know she's out of line and she needs to represent the people and vote with for the CHIP bill to override President Bush's veto.

If you don't live in Illinois google which representatives in your state voted against this bill and contact them to let them know they are WRONG!!!!  And need to vote in support of over-riding the presidental veto.  Enough is enough!!!!  This creep of a President doesn't get to spend our money on war and prevent our children (who will end up paying for the war) out of having health insurance.  They need health insurance and we need to let the president and our representative know we expect them to do as promised and represent America and not their own interests.

Sidebar:  Bush's excuse to veto this bill was that this helps to many middle class children.  IS THAT BAD!!??  The middle class pays a large portion of the taxes in this country because we don't have all the loopholes set up by the most wealthy so if a few middle class children benefit by getting health insurance that they wouldn't have otherwise then how is that horrible.  I don't know many families of 4 that could afford to pay for their own health insurance at an average rate of $1000/month!!!  These are CHILDREN!!!!!!
He's a lame-duck Pres, so he does not give a damn!  What a total and complete waste of space and oxygen Bush is.  I am SURE history will be brutal to him.  There is s very special rung of Hell waiting for you George, so don't keep them waiting too long.
Have any of you who are bashing Bush even read the bill as written?  You show your ignorance by buying into the game Pelosi and Co. are leading you on.  Inform yourself fully then make a statement.
While we spend BILLIONS of dollars on Iraq and all the waste & corruption that entails, we want to cut back on healthcare for our kids??? What sort of sick logic is that!?!?!?!

Bush and all those who support his veto need to understand that they have now told all that they care more for the waste and corruption in Iraq than they do for our own kids' health. How can they face their own families with this logic? How can they justify their actions?

So much for their religious fervor over living their lives like Jesus.

We need a health care system in this country that provides for all people. The only reason we don't already have a nationalized program is due to the insurance company lobby.

We are, indeed, a very sad country and bound to fail just like the Romans if we don't care for all of our people and work for peace in the world rather than war.
What ever happened to the Republican`s "Contract with America"and all the fiscally conservative measures we were supposed to see from a Republican controlled Congress and Administration? ---I am embarrased and feel "screwed over".  We can`t trust either party.
DonS-keep drinking the kool-aid. You have become delusional.
DonS

I would just love to meet you so I could see what STUPID looks like!

You've got your head so far up Bush's ass you can't see the light of REALITY!!!
As a person of faith I apologize for a president that claims faith but lacks any sense of mercy I guess those infants should get a job and work like the rest of us if they want health care.  And I apologize for those religious leaders that are willing to sell their souls for their political agenda and the cost of newborns.   In the womb – priceless, outside of the womb – worthless.
The fact is that the bill would get its funds from an increase in tobacco taxes as unfair.
HE is A Pig I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL HE IS OUT OF OFFICE. I am a smoker and I will GLADLY pay increased taxes for this Child Healthcare Bill to pass, Maybe it will pass once HILLIARY IS PRESIDENT. I am a single mother with NO HEALTHCARE options for the future, my employer dosen't offer them and will NEVER offer them. I pay over 1328$ a year for my Daughters healthcoverage I make 17,000.00 a year I don't qualify for medicaid and if he cuts Social Security my 10 year old son who is mentally and physically disabled will loose his coverage too.I currently have NO COVERAGE AT ALL, I can only go to a county facility and my payment is based on my hourly salary. I just hope he is out of office before this comes to fuitation. I almost lost my daycare benifits which would have meant that I would have had to quite my job loose my house loose everything I have worked for instead they just increased the amount I have to pay monthly which I cut out eating myself 2 dinners per night in a 1 week period per week. Now all you republicans out their can see how far a parent is will to go to provide for their child. Also 1 of my childrens Fathers has NEVER paid Child Support I am owed 39,000.00 but I have yet to get a dime, this is a crazy America we live in more concerned with illegal immigrants then we are in stopping child sex offenders. I hope we wake up one day before it is too late. One can only hope that is how I surrvied this long.HOPE.Concerened Parent
not what we requested
Bush is a murderer--he sends our kids overseas to get blown to pieces, and since he cannot send any kid under the age of 18 over there to get rid of them, he cuts their health coverage so they'll get sick and die. All he really wants is for the insurance companies to line his pockets with more cash since eventually the kids who slip through the cracks will end up paying more for coverage with his cronies' companies . . . I will enjoy spending eternity in hell with Bush when he dies!
What ever happened to the Republican`s "Contract with America"and all the fiscally conservative measures we were supposed to see from a Republican controlled Congress and Administration? ---I am embarrased and feel "screwed over".  We can`t trust either party.
Don S from OH for president!  With his leadership and foresight, America will surely regress to the fascist roots of what in the past we fought so hard against!  I love the USA!
I have a 5 month old that we provide health insurance for by going to work everyday.  The children that will benefit mostly from this are those who's parents will not work.  I understand that some parents cannot work, but there are PLENTY that can and choose not to.  I feel for the children being brought up in these situations, however I already pay higher state taxes for these children in my state, so I don't feel I need to pay for them double and also pay for the children in other states.  What about the elderly that have maxed out their Medicaid?  Most elderly cannot work to afford insurance.  What do they do?  I am all for helping those who cannot help themselves, but I don't agree with having to pay more and more to help those who can help themselves. (the parents)  I should not have to raise my child and help you to raise yours as well.
ya know, it's all you so called religious people that voted for Bush.  He's been such a saint.  This endless amount of money going to the War is his ONLY concern, and has been for HOW MANY YEARS NOW?  I hope with all hopes that there is a special OIL PIT IN HELL FOR BUSH, CHENEY - AND THEIR LYING SMUG FACED Fat, Greedy..Buds.  Why help the poor children and their families with no affordable Healthcare?  How can they make a profit from that?
The only thing I can say is that America should impeach a president who has done nothing but destroy this great country called America.
I really am surprised Bush's approval rating is so high (Do those 33% actually understand what he is doing?). I suppose we have idiots like Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilley, and Fox Noise to thank for pumping malformed half-truths on TV. Even Nixon was a better president than Bush. This will be a sad chapter in a history book one day.
Push for Impeachment!!!  Raise your voice!
Being a life long resident and working in rural West Virginia, I can tell you that this expansion of healthcare for children from poor families is not only needed but the moral step to take.  The additional children added under what would have been slightly expanded provisions of SCHIP are most assuredly in need of this coverage. As the cost of George W. Bush's massive military blunder in Iraq approaches 1/2 trillion dollars, adding additional poor American children to this program is worth a Presidential veto?  Many Americans think not.
