As promised, Bush vetoes SCHIP

From NBC’s John Yang (from the White House) and NBC’s Mike Viqueira (from Capitol Hill)

President Bush vetoed the SCHIP bill at about 10 a.m. this morning. In her on-the-record, off-camera gaggle, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said that after vetoing the bill, President Bush is open to negotiating a deal with congressional Democrats. "The president is willing to listen to ideas ... with the focus on how do you get back to the original intent" of the program.

Asked whether he had reached out to Democrats on the issue, Perino said Pennsylvania Avenue is "a two-way street" and there have been no overtures from the Democrats. Instead, she said, they have "used a lot of different ways to demagogue the issue against the president."

Perino said they have no reason to doubt House Minority Whip Roy Blunt's confidence that the House will sustain the veto.

House Democratic leaders have decided to put off an override vote on the SCHIP veto until October 17. There will, however, be an hour of House floor debate at some point this afternoon on a procedural motion. Dems are also planning a press conference this afternoon. The motion will essentially call for delayed consideration of the override vote. It will pass.

Why put it off? To let the suspense build, and in the meantime pound the living daylights out of Republicans who might be anxious about voting with the president, in the hopes that they will cave. Speaker Pelosi says she needs 15 of them to override. She doesn't mention that she lost eight Democrats (out of 231) when the bill initially passed the House.

The veto message is expected to arrive at the House at 11:45 a.m.

Then I guess the poor had better invest in birth control and have children that they will probably grow up as bad as their loser parents.
sooner or later Bush will be singing the Leonard Cohen lyrics,"it's lonely here, there's no one left to torture" from the song The Future. Look it up, it tells how the story ends.
We hear that millions-billions of dollars are awarded to fund the war and help other countries!!. I am ok with helping others...but we have children here that don't have medical coverage and are falling victim to the politicians wanting to make names for themselves!.This makes me very sick to be an american!..why can't they easily fund health care for our children??..they are the future of this country!!.....I am ashamed that I live in Texas..the same state that bush used to run..and ruined.
why don't you get off the bush kicks the dems or just as bad, what have they got passed, thier just a lot of hot air blowing around until election time, what we need is americans to take america back
I am convinced our president will veto anything and everything the dems propose, even if he agrees with it. Its the Bush family way of punishing the people that oppose them in anyway. Jeb was a master at this while he was govenor of Florida. They use their friends and punish their enemies. Very affective strategy. Its just a horrible way to treat others and to live for that matter.
It is sad and unjust that this so call president can abuse children and adults by ingnoring the Middle Class to help them but make them pay for HIS WAR. What a joke he is.
Are you people this dense.  The current way it is written would suggest that families making about $67,000 a year would be eligible.  In a good number of states the median household income is well below that.  So can do you Democrats justify paying for this much more.  Hilliarycare is going to suck, and did anyone ever stop to think of the thousands of people in our health care industry that will lose their jobs once it is put in place?  Will Hillary win?  Probably, Im a conservative person (that means I have my own opinions and can vote the way I want, not along some political BS lines that everyone in this country is brainwashed into) and dont want her to win, but she will be an ok president.  But everyone needs to look big picture here, not what is the flavor of the week.
Read the bill first and then make a knowledgeable response.    Bush is a lot better than having a Democrat that is going to kill unborn babies and allow gay marriages.  Americans, and the world, need Jesus.  He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
Anonymous Do you have a husband/Wife because you say WE which indicates YOU and PARTNER CAN AFFORD HEALTHCARE INSURANCE and the increased TAX on this isn't coming from the average american people they will raise CIGARETTE TAXES ONLY unless you smoke you don't have a leg to stand on keep your opinion to yourself unless you understand the bill.Angie Concerned SINGLE mother
Just why don't we want free health care?  How much less R&D on miracle cures could be spent on real care for real people right now?  Instant gratification and law suits.  Maybe if we didn't have so many options we could screen more in the beginning and save billions at the emergency room.  I believe a workable solution should involve government oversight but not restrict alternative care.  Break the hold insurance companies have over patients by allowing doctors to determine what is best. The ton of paperwork technolgy was supposed to eliminate is still here.  Our water, air, food, transportation, and education are all controlled/monitored/payed for by taxes.  Why not some form of social net that doesn't choke the economy or the patient?
Well when you work for Satan, you're suppose to piss off everybody.  He's only doing what he's told to do by his god Satan and the Illuminati.
I hope with this veto that the American people see the truth. President Bush and the rest of the Republican party played you. They led you to beleive that we were helping those poor children in Irac and led you to believe they are moral chirstian souls and us Democrats are heartless non-beleivers. Well, its pretty clear to see, they don't do anything that doesn't help the rich get richer. The war is a FRAUD! They don't care about those people, they don't care about the children in our Country let alone another Country. Morals, lets talk about Morals. You are so holy you can tell a woman what to do with her own body and that she HAS to bare child, but then in the same note tell her she's on her own to raise that child with no help. Children starving, children with no health insurance, you wont miss a wink of sleep over it, but your so MORAL!!
God Bless America.  Where Oil Wars reign over the health and future of our children.  George W. Bush, you are a bad, bad, man.
This sucks.  I'm moving to Cuba.
150 Billion for an illegal war that has killed so many of our young Fathers, Sons, Mothers, Daughters,  Husbands and wives. But no more for our Children? How does the Congress of this country sleep at night. They should have IMPEACHED this war monger years ago. Please have the guts to do it now!!!!
BUSH NEEDS TO GO NOW !!
Chad, you dolt, it would cover families with 4 children making 67,000 a year. Put it that way, they aren't so rich, now are they?
If you don't know how to read an article, don't comment on anything. Ever.
HAS ANY OF YOU IN HERE ACTUALLY READ THE BILL? That is exactly what I thought. All that bill was trying to do is smack at Bush. This is the problem with Washington and apparently it spreads into society. You guys automatically think because he vetos something and your ever beloved, cant do anything wrong Liberals come out against his veto, that they are right. Bush hasnt destroyed America. You still get your butt up every morning have your Starbucks and jump into your 60,000 car and head off to work at your 80,000 a year job. Then you come on a blog and whine. All I can say is STFU. Some of you can care less about kids with no healthcare as long as yours have it. Yes Im talking to you Liberals.....OOPS Progressives or whatever you call yourselves nowadays......
Right: Bush isnt that bad...
Left: Well he did spend the 5 bil.$ Clinton left to fix the levies in New Orleans in Iraq...
Right: Holly-iburton is that true. We still need another 190 bil.$ for Iraq, are sick kids more important?
Left:You can bet your Carlyl on that
While there are so many issues that we face in society, the one thing that is always at the heart of the issue is how to pay for it. As far as paying for government and the programs associated with it, we need to change our tax system so EVERYONE pays their part and our government can keep all the needed programs properly funded to include defense, medicare, medicaid, social security, etc.
Please go to www.fairtax.org and take the time to inform yourself on the benefits of changing our tax system.

Thank you.
Also Anonymous you say you shouldn't have to raise anyone elses child too. You think HEALTHCARE is RAISING a child, no that is something they should be provided with AUTOMATICALLY. We are 1 of 3 countries that don't have Federal Subsidized healthcare and that's why we have children in Baltiomore, MD dying from brain infections due to ROTTEN TEETH because their WORKING SINGLE Mother didn't qualify for Medicaid and her 10 year old son died from a tooth ache this was this year in March 2007 BUSH is the cause for that childs death go read it it was on MSNBC that mother worked 3 JOBs for less per year then me and trust me honey I make less then 18,000 per year but I get up and go to work KNOWING I am doing the job NO REPUBLICAN would even consider doing.Think before you humilliate yourself with no real facts to back your opinion.A CONCERNED SINGLE PARENT
Who are the 8 democrats who pulled their initial support and why did they withdraw? Who are the remaining Republicans that Speaker Pelosi says she needs 15 to override the Veto? I read the same stories but no one gives any substance or real detail.
DonS, you got it right on except that this is government payment to private business which is not socialism, the "looneys" are the majority of the public on this subject, the White House is playing politics by insisting on a level of funding that will actually take coverage away from people who already have it, people who have other coverage don't qualify for SCHIP, and the GOP has controlled at least one branch of government almost continually for the last generation.  Conservatives had their chance to govern and screwed it up so badly it will take years to undo the damage.  Get over it.
ANONYMOUS...That's a really naive statement. You should immediately go and rent "Sicko" if you want to see how vulnerable you are in caring for your child.  On the day that your employer decides to cut your benefits, or that you don't need health care anymore, you will understand about the people who "will not work".  Less than 50% of the US population has health care, but unemployment is >5%.  So, people ARE working.  Then there is the day that your insurance carrier decides your "tumor" is cosmetic surgery and unimportant.  No, we have a serious problem here.
Ensure you are truly educated about this topic.  continuing to rely on cigarette tax to fund healthcare is a losing battle.  The more you tax, the more volume goes down.  Just for those of you who CAN'T do the math, that means less $ and more taxes from YOU.
The President obviously doesn't care about ordinary people and their children.
Bush cares about children for 9 months and then could care less about them after they are born because he cares about politics and not the children themselves. He is a sad. sad man.
The people not getting helped is the richest 5%.
I guess that answers that veto.
The deomcrats are calling people up to the age of 25 children??????  LOL!

They can't say that and expect to have a draft.
These damned Repugnants don't mind spending billions upon billions for war BUT groan and moan about a "new entitlement" for our own children??????  What kind of logic is this????  There are many lower middle class families that cannot afford health care, dental and vision care.  I don't gie a dman if you try to scare the hell out of people with "OOOOHHH IT'S SOCIALISM"  YOu can call it socialism - you can call it a Sunday walk in the park if you want to - I could care less - but taking care of the children MUST BE PRIORITY.

The GOP is telling us that the terrorists want to hurt us but we will destroy ourselves before that ever happens.
K in Virginia...You think Jesus likes you better because you hate gays?  You think he'll feel good about you denying poor children health care so long as you hate gays?  All Fundimentalist Christians today want to do is point out other people's sin.  When it comes to actually walking the talk and caring for people (what Christ told YOU specifically to do)...that's just too much to ask.
Don't you guys get it? It's a set up. get everyone all crazy then throw them a bone and be a hero
SC - You make perfect sense. We as a nation have to decide where our priorities lie.  I believe that a society that secures a social safety net for its citizens will reap the benefits of that far into the future.  Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, affordable health care for all, and a tax structure that insures everyone pays fairly need to be assured.  Not having the tax burdon fall so disapportionately on the middle class while the rich are allowed to walk away from their social responsibility to the detriment of everyone else in our society is a goal that should be met.  Those of us that have benefited the most from our society have the greatest responsibility to give back.
Never, ever argue with a liberal about government handouts.  It's like being between the feeding trough and the pigs at supper time.  You are going to get stampeded.
Brilliant political move by the Democracts.  Bush is in a catch 22: Veto and you're a child hater, don't veto and approve more spending and give the Democrats a legistlation they can be proud of.  Just like his "surge" move.
You see. bush even come right out and said he doesn't want to help the middle class. The man is a joke and should be removed from office.
Do I detect some phony smokers?  I think I do.
I noticed when they sent the bill up to the White House, they used children as a human shield at their press conference.

Looks like Al Qaeda has taught them well.......
Good old President Bush -- way to go! Money for a stupid war but no money for insurance for kids -- where are his priorities? -- Is he stupid or what?  I'm Canadian and I'm so glad I live in Canada -- I am very sorry for those poor kids who can't get insurance because Bush is so focused on his war in Iraq.  How can anyone say that they are proud to be an American with Bush as President?

K in VA you have no children do you??? How old are you??? You might want to reconsider you opinion if your anywhere close to getting Social Security cause the BUSH man want's to cut that too.Why worry about GAY marrigies unless your GAY, dosen't affect or effect you in anyway I am sure you are FAR removed from the "GAY" population and abortion is a womans choice PRO-CHOICE or maybe you would like to go back to the 1950's with women shoving hangers up themselves will this make you a HAPPY BUSH SUPPORTER or maybe you would like to send a gift to BUSH's Daughter's wedding that will cost us several thousands of dollars so we can FLY in political friends for BUSH's BIG EVENT??? Hey why not give your hard earned money away???Concerned Parent
W is a big fat joke... always has been always will be.
I'm glad he vetoed the Bill.  I'm tired of paying for someone else’s desire to have something for nothing.  Nothing but a bunch of whiners looking for someone else to pay their bills.  My understanding is this program was designed for the poor, not the middle class.  This is America not Europe, start fending for yourselves and stop reaching for a free handout.
Robert tobacco related illness costs more in a month than this would cost i a year.
Bush's approval rating was higher than congresses approval rating last I checked. I think that it sounds good to provide healthcare for children but why should I be paying for children's healthcare when I can't even afford my own healthcare?  SCHIP is a discriminatory program since it only serves children.  SCHIP is not going to solve our healthcare problems in this country people--get real.  Throwing money at a problem doesn't make it go away.  I'd like to see more fiscal conservatism as well.
The republicans are toast in 2008
Sounds like to me the libs can attack anyway they choose but if you are conservative you must play nice and watch your language.  Why are you allowing the libs to attack our duly elected president so viciously?  They even get to lie as much as they want to.
so he was dubbed the worst president ever, now hes the worst of the worst and nobody can get any worse president EVER!! Lord help us all! HE does not care!!!!!
Another example of the disconnect with the American people. Bush and his advisors have no idea what the average American goes through!

This is for the children! For the Poor! For heaven's sake. Some of you out there don't want to support this because you think this bill helps people who are too lazy to get a job or just don't want to help themselves. Well, so what? Then isn't that like helping the poor and needy and the homeless? What's wrong with that? WIt's not coming out of your pocket unless you choose to go and pay $5 or $6 for a pack of cigs. There wasn't going to be a sales tax or income tax to fund this bill. Geez, Listen and Pay Attention. We all want World Peace, to help the homeless, get rid of poverty. Well, this is just a small piece of that. If we can throw away billions of dollars on a freakin' war, why can't we get a small portion of that to help a small percentage of people in our own country?? Because it doesn't benefit the almighty Bush's pockets. What a joke this guy is? I'm disgusted.
