Clinton, Sputnik and science

Posted: Thursday, October 04, 2007 11:17 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/National Journal’s Athena Jones
If elected president, Clinton will rescind the ban on "ethical embryonic stem cell research" and appoint an assistant to the president on science and technology policy, she said today in a speech at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sputnik.

"Everyday, we are learning more about the opportunity this kind of research offers,” Clinton said, calling the limits President Bush has placed on stem cell research a "ban on hope." “Within these cells may lie the cures for Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, Huntington's and more.”

The pledge, which she laid out under a banner that read Reclaiming Our Commitment to Science & Innovation, was part of an agenda Clinton laid out to end what she called the Bush administration's "war on science." She promised to invest more in scientific research, increase funding for NASA and expand studies on climate change and proposed a $50 billion Strategic Energy Fund to find ways to increase U.S. energy independence and reduce the threat of global warming.

She talked about creating new jobs by focusing on renewable energy and highlighted successes Germany has had in the field. After the speech, while posing for pictures with members of the audience, Clinton chatted with two German graduate students, telling them she was very impressed with what Germany is doing and called Chancellor Angela Merkel a "good woman leader."

The Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, the world's first artificial satellite, on October 4, 1957, jump-starting the space race and leading American educators to call for a greater focus on math and science courses in schools.

Clinton reminisced about her father buying binoculars so she and her siblings could try to spot Sputnik in sky and the fascination space held for her as a child.

"What America achieved after Sputnik is a symbol of what America can do now as we confront a new global economy, new environmental challenges, and the promise of new discoveries in medicine," Clinton said.

Clinton added that the Bush administration had ignored or manipulated science and said with new policies and a "renewed commitment to scientific integrity and innovation, America is ready to lead in the 21st century. "

She joked, paraphrasing Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert, "This administration doesn't make decisions based on facts; it makes facts based on decisions."

I can't imagine a negative thing to say about what Hillary said about recommitting ourselves to science and space.  BUT..I'm sure the Jerry's and Sierra SF's out there will come up with something...stupid as usual given Jerry's lack of belief in global warming, Sierra's wacky obsessive distate for her.
LOOKIE HERE...hillaryclinton.com
Maybe she's hoping to develop a Bill clone that will keep his zipper closed???
Woohoo, Science Rules!
well Pat.....

of course she is going to rescind it!

anything that has the word ethical certainly cannot be in the Clinton vocabulary!
Sooooo, Rudy is all for it too 'cause he was there on 911......
Clinton talks a good game in her little circle of supporters. Maybe she should chill on the Bush bashing and just maybe more people would support her. Bush is not running again in case some didnt know.
Ha! Pat, you called it on Jerry and this time he spouts only mindless drivel. Way to go Hillary! A breath of fresh air from a clear minded and intelligent person. Thank the Lord.
Whoever wrote "Maybe she's hoping to develop a Bill clone that will keep his zipper closed???" is not the real Pat from Huntington NY who wrote the first comment here and is a Hillary supporter.  Seems the moderators here at MSNBC are not doing their job! That said, Jerry, what the heck are you talking about>
If she really admires Angela Merkel perhaps she should just call her a good leader instead of a good "woman leader".  These are the very stereotypes she is supposedly trying to break.
You were right, PAT
Thanks for supporting the open exchange of opinion
From the LA Times:

'..At Wal-Mart, Clinton didn't upset any carts

As a board member, she touted women and the environment but didn't fight anti-union efforts.
By Stephen Braun, Times Staff Writer
May 19, 2007
BENTONVILLE, ARK. — At a Democratic presidential debate last month, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton described Wal-Mart, the world's largest retail company, as a "mixed blessing." She spoke from experience.

From 1986 to 1992, Clinton was a member of its board of directors, carefully navigating through a spate of internal policy concerns that now weigh on Wal-Mart's corporate image....'

'...Former Wal-Mart Stores Inc. board members and executives recall Clinton as a politically nimble insider....'

i.e an opportunist, 'on the make'
Someone who profitted from the misery of Walk-Mart employees.

'..who cautiously tried to nudge the company toward hiring more female executives and environmentally friendly practices, to limited effect, while remaining silent as Wal-Mart pursued anti-union strategies...'

Why would any union endorse Hillary ?
Given her anti-union assoications with Wal-Mart
and her 'union buster' advisor, Mark Penn ??
Why would any union endorse Hillary ?

'...Four times a year, Clinton would leave Little Rock, driven by Arkansas state troopers and sometimes accompanied by her husband, then-Gov. Bill Clinton, for a three-hour ride to Bentonville, the northwest Arkansas company town that sprouted up around Wal-Mart's headquarters....'

At taxpayer expense.....
To enrich herself, personally .....

'...Wal-Mart critics say her presence brought little lasting change to the firm. And former executives say she was not a voice for bold reform.

"She was not a dissenter," said Donald G. Soderquist, Wal-Mart's former chief operating officer and the board's vice chairman during Clinton's tenure. "She was a part of those decisions."...'

Hillary stood silent while Wal-Mart exploited it's employees !!
Hillary said nothing in response to Wal-Mart's anti-union policies.
No union, no health care, low wages for employees
the Wal-Mart 'family'

'...but it (Wal-Mart) has also drawn fierce fire from labor organizers who accuse the retail behemoth of union-busting tactics, poor wages and healthcare benefits, and mistreatment of female workers....'

While Hillary stood silently
Silence implies consent
Is Hillary a 'union baby' or a 'Wal-Mart baby'
Union Baby, why won't you answer the question ?

'..A request to interview Sen. Clinton was turned down by her campaign...'

Why is that ?
Why won't Hillary talk about Wal-Mart ?
PAT, Why won't Hillary talk about Wal-Mart ?
PAT, should Wal-Mart allow worker to unionize ?
PAT, what has Hillary done to allow workers to unionize at Wal-Mart ?

'..Clinton amassed nearly $100,000 worth of Wal-Mart stock as a director, much of which she and her husband placed in 1993 into a blind trust that they still maintain....'

She's done very well for herself with Wal-Mart !!
PAT, should Hillary divest herself from anti-union Wal-Mart stock ?]
PAT, has Hillary's relationship with Wal-Mart been unethical ?
What do you think, PAT ?
Good God! 50 billion here, 110 billion there, another 35 billion here, and 15 billion there, plus $5,000 to everyone there.  Were is this money coming from?
After the smokers are taxed into quiting who's going to pay for all this money Hillary plans on spending?  More importantly, when is the press going to start asking how she plans to pay for all these new programs.
"Whoever wrote "Maybe she's hoping to develop a Bill clone that will keep his zipper closed???" is not the real Pat from Huntington NY who wrote the first comment here and is a Hillary supporter.  Seems the moderators here at MSNBC are not doing their job! the REAL PAT from, Huntington, NY (Sent Thursday, October 04, 2007 12:19 PM)

It's a tactic that has been used to try to misrepresent me too, Pat. There really should be some way to prevent it. MSNBC has a moderator in name only, or so it would seem.

Van
while we're on the subject of science let me raise the issue of biological research. recently the news reports no control of bio's by any department of the copanied handling these materials. after 911 the funding went from 41 million to 1.6 billion in this industry for relatively few companies. now when the anthrax attacks began i contacted the fbi and stated while this could be a terrorist attack i thought it was internal generated by someone with economic gains from such an attack, ie the increased funding which obviously materialized. i have always thought this was a form of economic terrorism by some individual with defense contracts to gain exploiting the 911 attacks. anyone?
Good God! 50 billion here, 110 billion there, another 35 billion here, and 15 billion there, plus $5,000 to everyone there.  Were is this money coming from?

Scary (Sent Thursday, October 04, 2007 12:27 PM)

Thanks for asking...

Where have you been the past 7 years? The only time republicans give half-a-damn about fiscal responsibility is when democrats hold the purse strings.

We will roll back the top 1% tax cuts. We will decrease the OVER TWO BILLION DOLLARS A WEEK we spend on the Iraq occupation.
We will re-negotiate the Medicare drug debacle, saving BILLIONS.
We will restore some semblance of competence and fiscal integrity in the government agencies where cronyism and ideology have destroyed them from within.

That's just a start.

Van
Got a job Scary?? Then it's coming from you, and me.
FROM YOU jERRY!
Scary... From the same place the Bush welfare to the oil companies and Haliburton comes from to say nothing of the 9 billion a month being squandered on a lost cause. It is peculiar that the right wing thinks a one dollar increase in the minimum wage will bankrupt the country and a war of choice is just dandy. Your children's children will be paying for the Bush debacle.
Not a good start today, jerry.  Everyone is on to you.

PAT - you think maybe jerry posted under your name with the zipper thing?  Methinks sooo...
No offense to anybody who supports her, but it's really easy to say you're going to come up with $50 Billion when you don't have it yet.  Lets assume she's going to get into office, when the decision to spend that $50 Billion comes up, where do you think she'll spend it?  In science that won't have a breakthough for 10 years or so, or in something that is going to keep her name alive in the history books?

I don't care if she's the first female president, if she doesn't do anything special she'll only be a footnote in American history.  "Here's your first woman president...and she didn't do anything, moving to the next president."

All the Bush bashing is so she can try to hold herself higher then Bush is doing right now.  It's like she's saying: "Hey everybody, look at me!!  I'm in a brighter light then what our current president is, you should vote for me!!  I'm cuter!"  I think somebody better tell her she's not running for Cheerleader President, but for President of the USA.
Sierra SF, what does Hillary's past experience with Walmart have to do with the subject of the article at hand?  She's talking about recommitting the US to science like it did back in the 1950s during Eisenhower to combat the cold war and the USSR's initial space achievement...and you're talking about Wal-Mart?  Sorry...no opinion since you're not sticking to the subject at hand.
Scary:

Probably she has a link to the Chinese treasury....
But I think she will tax everybody making $40,000 a year at 28%.  Her husband lied through his teeth about a middle class tax cut in 1992, why should anybody believe what she says?

Hillary never cared about unions until she decided to run for president.....

And to top it off, she has a union buster on her committee, yet the unions are just loving her.

Come to think it, didn't the unions sink further into the abyss during the first Clinton years?
Imagine putting science ahead of dogma, who woulda thunk?
Sierra , I would love to read some of the info. you have ,but its worthless unless you leave a spource for such .
The fact is that we as Americans are possed with a very serious choice of 2 ,and it may not be pretty ,but people better decide if they want more of the same or some kind of reform.
I am not pleased with the choices for candidates but the hard fact is ,as I have said before, we have had only 2 choices from the get go all others are fillers
Scary , you and I ,you and I!
If/when Hillary wins the dem primary, we will begin to see the real debate.

1.  Tell us why the Clinton administration wrote an order (around 1995-96) that prevented the FBI and CIA from sharing information about known and suspected terrorists operating in the USA.

2.  Tell us why you allowed Al Qaeda to operate freely after you knew their involvement in the 1994 WTC bombing?

3.  You are married to the person that had the highest security clearance in the USA and had access to everything that we knew about Iraq.  How can you say that you were lied to about WMD?  Didn't you ask your husband what he thought before you voted?

4.  Since 1992, you have lived and worked within 6 miles of the Walter Reed Hospital - a completely government-run healthcare facility.  If you cared so much about healthcare AND the government was capable of providing better, less expensive healthcare than the private sector, how is it that WRH was allowed to operate with such terrible conditions?

5.  It's been 15 years since your socialized medicine plan was totally rejected by the American people.  If you cared so much about providing healthcare to the uninsured, why couldn't you figure out a solution that doesn't involve taking away private healthcare and medical choice for the majority of Americans?

6.  During your campaign, you have stated many times that the USA should not be in Iraq and that we are wasting American lives and taxpayer dollars.  In last week's debate, you said that you would keep troops in Iraq until 2013.  Why would you keep troops in a hostile situation for 5 more years if it was a waste (in your opinion)?

7.  During the mid-late 1990s, millions of middle-class Americans pumped trillions of dollars into phony companies via the stock market.  Your administration knew full well about the fraud that was going on - pump and dump schemes, etc...  The result was an historically massive loss of income to the middle class.  Why didn't you do anything about this?  After all, Enron, MCI, Worldcom, Tyco, etc...  happened during your husband's administration.
These are just a few off the top of my head.  I know some Democrats think she is unbeatable.  Well maybe to Obama, Dodd and Biden - who all agree with her.

Wait until she gets to answer the tough questions.  Say goodbye.  Most Americans don't want to go back to the Clinton years - and not because of the embarrassing randiness of her husband.
Hey Scary..Hope your question " Where is the money coming from?" answered already.. If not, start looking inside your pocket."Good God!" is right, people, this woman is greedy, unrealistic, over exchagerated, and delusional. Geesh, doesn't anyone have to ability to focus beyond the rose colored glasses?!
Where will the money come from? Cigarette taxes. Those damn dirty smoking poor people have to learn to stop smoking. Thanks Mississippi for having lower taxes on cigarettes
My ship was in San Francisco when the US launched it's first satellite after sputnik and Herb Caen in his column 'Bagdad by the Bay' wrote people are trying to come up with a name for the American sputnik I have heard some who want to call it goofnic and flunknic but i think the winner is Civil Service because it won't work and can't be fired. I still thought that was funny after I retired from the navy and went to work for the government.
Go ahead Hil, tell them all what they want to hear.  We are such sheep.
"renewed commitment to scientific integrity and innovation"

The leftwing liberal definition of scientific integrity goes right out(or is that left out) the window when they start preaching genetically preprogramed homosexuality. Maybe the innovation is Bill's idea, he's still looking for a scientific solution to washing sputnik out of little blue dresses. And Hillary would not know integrity, scientific or not, if it bit her on the backside.
I see Jerry how you wear those blinders when it comes to sleaze and lack of any ethics vis-a-vis Repuks but continues with your obsessive hate for The Clintons.
For those criticizing the amount of money spent on the space program, or that we have more important issues to deal with on earth, think about this:  most if not all technological advances and many medical advances, came to fruition because of the space program. Technologies used for cell phones, computers, iPods, etc., were developed from research stemming from the space program. Same is true with various medical advances and technologies.  So, next time you say, there's more important things to worry about than sending a man or woman to the moon or mars, remeber, but for our space program, you might not even be typing on that fancy computer of yours.
Senator Clinton America's great hope for an intelligent leader of our Country. God would surly shed his grace on us with a do over on the last guy he spoke to!
SCARY.... THE MONEY IS COMMING FROM THE 8 BILLION DOLLARS WE WASTE EVERY MONTH IN IRAQ, DEFENDING A CIVAL WAR. BY THE TIME IT TOOK ME TO WRITE THIS, WE JUST SPENT $200,000 MORE IN IRAQ FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING !
Pat:

my lack of belief when it comes to global warming?

There is a picture of a polar bear sitting on an ice island in Al Gore's Comedy "an Incovientant truth"

he says the polar bear is going to die......

but he forgets that polar bears can swim..........

and he is right next to a bigger ice flow........

plus the fact that Al Gore STOLE the picture and never paid royalties on it got him in trouble with the people that DID take the picture......

Plus Al Gore talks about jets and the fuel that pollutes the atmospehere when he flies around in a private jet himself......

I won't even go into the Chilean sea bass dinner LOL..

PETA (People against eating tasty animals) were outside the Erwin Center in Austin at his speech protesting because he refuses to go vegan.......

like I said:  a real nut job

Plus the fact he might have won the election in 2000 if he had carried his own state LOL!
Lookie here..hillaryclinton.com
Van:

I can tell the difference.....

You must be making some hot money over at Media Matters/founded by Hillary Clinton.
Good point Karlos, While some are political mongrels they have forgotten that Big money, Big government, And big industry continue to be the controlling factor in this country. We the people no longer have a say. We can only hope the lemmings wake up and take back what is ours.
"Bush is not running again in case some didnt know.
Harold Jackson, Houston (Sent Thursday, October 04, 2007 12:10 PM)"

Well Harold, while he might not be on the ticket, he definately will be associated with the GOP for many years.  His Presidency has spot lighted the logical end point of conservative philosophy and the American people are seeing how incredibly bad at everything Republicans really are.

The only way for GOP candidates to shake the Bush monkey off their backs is to go in a new direction.  Too bad none of the GOP candidates are capable of doing that.  And even if they were capable, the party would disown them for disagreeing with the Dear Leader.

You guys have sown nothing but unthinking party loyalty over the well being of the country at large.  And you're about to reap that harvest.  Have fun in the political wilderness. =)
I would also like to thank people like, Vanreuter, Pat, and JIrby to name a few who seem to posses the intelligence to talk issues and bring hard core reference material to this site. I may not always see eye to eye with their opinions about some subjects, but that does not mean I do not respect their intelligence. Thanks again.
I am beginning to warm up to the Hill.  She would make a good president.  That is what has the right wing and Sierra so scared.  After running a very very well financed demonization campaign for fifteen years, if she does get elected they will suffer mightily.  Not only will big pharma and the corporate HMO's lose profits but they will be shown for what they are, ineffective manipulators and greedy anti-americans.  And, Sierra will lose his paycheck.  (BTW, Sierra, do you get paid by the word?? geesh!)

It is amazing to see how, despite all the demoniztion from the right, and negative press coverage from our right wing controlled media, she continues to rise in the polls--not only in Democratic party primary polls but in match-ups with all the repubs.  Americans are finally seeing through the distorted coverage and recognizing their own and America's own self interest.
Sierra, when are you going to therapy to find out why you detest woman so much?
Sierra, why do you rant and rave so horribly against Hillary when you don't even know her?
Sierra, why do you get all your untruths from Fox noise when you claim to be a democrat?
Sierra, why do you present an article written by a right winger who still supports Bush, Mr Stephan Braun?
Sierra, are you really a political hack being paid by the republican party?
Sierra, or did you forget to take your lithium to help stabilize your mood. Which one Sierra?
Wow! Romney with only $9 million for third quarter - and only 23,000 new donors.  This is not looking good for the Republican party.

It is a shame that recent years of dishonest, unethical, bravado-strewn, bullying individuals have tarnished what was, essentially, a solid political party.  It will take years to earn the citizens' trust back.
It's refreshing to hear a presidential candidate discuss the value and power of science. The current administration has done a complete disservice to science and the scientific community.  The way Bush has allowed science to be devalued is a disgrace.  Using cronies to edit scientific research, trying to cast doubt on the global consensus on climate change, touting intelligent design as a legitimate subject for science education...These are just a few examples of Bush's gross negligence and/or willful mismanagement in the scientific arena.
Karlos, conspiracy theories will always be popular but hardly ever taken seriously.  To suggest that someone used the anthrax for a profit motivated scheme--well, that could be the one time.  I doubt it, but I wouldn't bet against it.  First of all the person would have to be a sociopath to do such a thing.  That only liberal democrats were targetted suggests someone with a right wing political past.  The principal profiteers after the anthrax contamination were the companies that used gas sterilization to clean out the affected buildings.  I believe these were relatively small companies that used a little known technology based on chlorine dioxide.

Maybe when the democrats get control of the Dept. of Justice, a real investigation can be conducted.  If it isn't too late by then to gather evidence.
if clinton wants to help medical research maybe she could let researchers slice up her brain so we could  better understand how the criminal mind works, it would kill two birds with one stone

lets run this one up the flag pole and see what happens
I'd rather spend $50 billion on science and research that might actually benefit this country than the hundreds of billions we have spent in Iraq.

Accusing Democrats of being loose with the people's money doesn't fly in the wake of Bush's fiscal irresponsibility.
I have more questions:

8.  You have signed an order that your paperwork that is stored in a warehouse in Little Rock is not to be seen till after the November 2008 election.  Why?

9.  You claimed that at the DAilyKOS convention in August of this year that you were the founder of Media Matters.  Others have claimed it was David Brock.  Who did find it and if it was indeed David brock, why would you lie about that?

10.  What tells America that you have the experience to be President?

11.  Your husband recently threatened the editors at GQ magazine with witholding access to the Clinton family if they did not drop their story about fighting inside the Clinton campaign.  The idea of your husband playing Tony Soprano frightens a lot of Americans that believe int he first amendment covering free speech.  Do you believe in free speech Senator?

Your Husband was associated with a company INFOUSA, which sold lists to crooks that stole bank accounts from Alzheimers patients.  Did you approve of this?

I could go all day, but here are some good questions during the debate with the GOP candidate.
