Obama explains not wearing flag pin

Posted: Thursday, October 04, 2007 3:11 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Per the AP, Obama has decided to stop wearing the American flag on his, well, lapel. He

told local Iowa TV station KCRG yesterday: "I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest. Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament to my patriotism."

This will likely prompt the unpatriotic shots from Republicans. Will Dems join in?

*** UPDATE *** This is what Obama said right before what's above: "The truth is that right after 9-11 I had a pin. Shortly after 9-11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security."

*** UPDATE 2 *** The Obama campaign passes along that he stopped wearing the pin years ago. Here’s the full context of what Obama said to the reporter:

QUESTION: "One last quick question, and this is just kind of a lighter note, you don't have an American flag pin on, is this a fashion statement? Those have been on politicians since September 12, 2001?"

OBAMA: "You know, the truth is that right after 9/11 I had a pin. Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest, instead I'm gonna try to tell the American people what I believe what will make this country great and hopefully that will be a testimony to my patriotism."

This will probably generate harsh words from both sides. Wearing a flag pin does not make you a patriot, it is what you are willing to do for your country.
Good for you Obama, that stupid flag pin is a catch phrase. I am at war! Give up the phony patriot gammit and do some real good for America.
Flag wavers waste time! Put it down and get the job done.
this is beyond non-news
It's not a pin or a sign.  It's not what you say.  It's what you do.  Obama has proven himself several orders of magnitude above the average Repugnican on that score.
This is a perfect example of creating news.  The Senator may have told a local tv station, but reporting on this level is what brings the national attention.  Seriously:  you just made a lapel pin a story on a major blog about an election to the highest office in America.  And the next woefully inadequte and saccharine process story you do on how wacky and absurd campaigning can be, please recall this marvelous little nugget.
Obama is correct in thinking that simply wearing that label does not make you patriotic, but is the American electorate smart enought to realize that.
Did a KCRG reporter ask, where's your flag pin, or did he volunteer? And who cares? I guess I'll watch the 6PM news (I won't miss the Daily Show to watch the 10PM news)to find out this very important news!!!!!!!!!!!
Correct, Ravine Force. The only vice-president in our history who could be desribed as "creepy" wears one, and he's a known draft-doging, chicken hawk coward who only shoots at things he knows won't shoot back - like corrupt, old repug lawyers from Texarse.
Boy !!
First Read will DO ANYTHING to avoid the issues !

Where is your news article about the Lieberman-Kyl 'Bomb Iran' bill ?

Not News worthy ?

I wonder if Faux Newz covered Lieberman-Kyl ?

First Read is ridiculous !

How about another puff piece on Hillary's cleavage ??
Good Lord!  Has campaigning REALLY become that whackadoodle that candidates feel they have to make such stupid announcements.  I like Obama but this is NOT newsworthy.

Goes along with all those now faded "Support our troops" bumper stickers...they prove nothing since every chickenhawk from texass to michigan has one...they still wont serve or pay for the war they want but they do have the bumper stickers and lapels, you know they do
Here we go again giving something useless to the public to fight over.

Domenico,
Will you please tell us the CONTEXT of how this conversation came about. That is the difference between TABLOID and REAL JOURNALISM.

Once again Domenico,
I am asking you respectfully; Will you please tell us the CONTEXT?

We can make anything look very good or very bad by presenting information(misinformation) but what tells the REAL story is the CONTEXT.

Can you show us some dignity and civility so that we can take you seriously again? or will you leave it just the way it is to manufacture controversy and score many hits on your site?

I challenge you to do the right thing.
I was an Obama fan until this. I'm a veteran of Iraqi Freedom X 3. This just shows his true feelings. I retired after 22 yrs protecting the dignity of that flag and this is a prime example of how some Americans don't appreciate sh*&.
One of the reasons that I enjoy being a Democrat is that I love my country.  My party does not require me to wear a tin replica of this nation's flag in their lapel to prove it.
oooh, Obama finaly takes a stand!
You clowns at first read lost me . Everything you think the public will look at as a negative for Obama you make sure you print it. I understand your pro Hilliary to a fault, but what you don't understand is that you can't fool me . Clowns I will never vote for her. Finally I'm fed up with your trick-phony information.
Can't you wear a flag pin, and still act patriotic?  Yet another Politically Correct politician trying to avoid having to answer to anyone who might be offended by our flag.

No, the flag is not our country or patriotism.  But it is a symbol, and any potential president should wear it proudly.
He will surely be crucified now.  Hillary will wear a larger pin to let every one see her patriotism.  I have to give him this:  He is not afraid to step out there on his own.  I know it's lonely out there.

Obama '08
i cannot believe i am responding to this story... on second thought, never mind.
Hmmmmmm
I think this is a dumb move.
If wearing a flag pin is so stupid and says nothing about who you are and what you believe, then what does it mean when you wear an AIDS ribbon on your lapel, or a Breast Cancer ribbon, or a Lance Armstrong bracelet?  Is that stupid, too?  Or is just that wearing a flag pin is stupid?  And is it just stupid when politicians wear them, or is it stupid for anyone to wear them?  Just some food for thought.
You can't make this up!  Are there razzies for journalism?  If so, I nominate Domenico Montanaro.
1Soldier4U, NC:  You were never going to vote for him.  Are you that petty?  I am a vet also, wearing a pin, or yelling support soldiers mean nothing.  You have to walk the walk.  I don't wear a pin--I never stopped supporting them.  So get real!!!
Why don't you report real news...BTW I agree with Obama's position a pin doesn't make you anything but follow the leader.

Clinton Won't sign Anti-Tortue pledge

ABC News' Rick Klein Reports: Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has declined to sign an anti-torture pledge circulated by a liberal organization, making her the only Democratic candidate for president to withhold her endorsement of a blanket statement condemning torture.

The anti-torture pledge, initiated by the American Freedom Campaign -- a group founded by a coalition of civil-liberties groups and liberal activists -- commits the candidates to disavowing some of the controversial tactics employed by the Bush administration.

I love the people, service people or not, who get upset that he won't wear the pin.  Read a book.  History shows that it's never a bad thing when people are implicitly or explictly forced to, you know, wear armbands or mark their allegiance outwardly.  You think this hunk of metal is what you were fighting for?  It was the right to not wear, nevermind that this whole issue is ridiculous.
Shocking reading the liberal comments here wanting nothing to do with the story and instead attack whomever they hate this week. Good stuff the face of the Democrats the new party of hate.
Molly,

hahhaha..you made me really laugh after a rough day.

(to find out this very important news!!!!!!!!!!! )

Does firstread tell us which color of socks Obama wear?
I can not wait for Hillary to put on her 8 inch flag earrings and wear them at the next debate.  We will see who has the biggest and most est flags!
You wave HILLARY! Those repugs have tiny little itty bitty flags.
As a soldier I'm appalled. I will do everything I can to get this message out. I am passing this to everyone in our network. I have soldiers standing around me now, advising me on what to write. So as you can see, we have caught this.

Thanks Domenico,
for listening and adding a little CONTEXT in the form of an "UPDATE" which you didn't have on the first post when I sent my comment emphasizing CONTEXT. It seems you still have left some information like what the question was etc. But it is a step in the right direction.
Why can't you wear the pin AND be patriotic? Like he said, it's in what you DO that shows you are patriotic. If that is true, it doesn't matter whether or not he wears the pin so why change?
This is why this blog will be rated the worst blog that ever exist. Shame on you MSNBC.

I guess the news cycle is slow today.....
Here's the scoop...took about a minute on the net to get the details. The reporter noticed that Obama wasn't wearing the pin and asked him about it. A reporter also noted that Hillary never wears a flag pin and Bill Clinton wears a Hillary pin. Don't know why this is important...but thought I could fill in some facts. Wonder which of the other candidates do or do not wear a flag pin...I'm sure all those eagle eyed reporters will let us all know the answer to this burning question in no time at all.
Obama is jumping the shark.  He wants to get rid of our nukes.  Now he is pushing this lame flag pin thing.  Next he will want to save the whales and buy the world a Coke.
Maybe the answer is simply, he has lost the pin, and to save face, he is responding this way. It would be great if he would be honest; but alas, he IS a politician!
This news could have been about paris hilton it is so insignificant in the whole of things.
The flag does not represent the war. It represents our country and he should be proud to wear it. Its pathetic that anyone would support someone for President who would not wear the flag.
The point about the post-9/11 thing by Obama is brilliant, I noticed the same thing at the time in a world where no one seemed to, and I never expected a politician to be bold or honest enough to say it; everyone put flags on their cars and shut off their minds with regards to understanding the Middle East after 9/11, just trusting the President unconditionally, with no attention to the difference between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, or between Saddam Hussein and Bin Laden.  It's understandable that many average Americans shut off emotionally after 9/11 and didn't want to think in detail about the part of the world where it all began, and the initial surge of patriotic solidarity was fantastic and inspiring; however, it is in such moments that citizens in a democracy must also be most informed and vigilant that their mass of solidarity not be harnessed and used for nefarious purposes.  When we have unconditional faith in our leader like a king, that does not represent faith in America, it represents the opposite; when mass solidarity destroys the ability for individuals to question policy without having their patriotism put on trial, that does not represent America, it represents the opposite.  Obama gets it.
I am sure W will issue an order that declares him a "non-patriot," or perhaps a traiter.  Maybe not, W hasnt been pushing the patriot thing since his entire cabinet has fallen apart - guess those folks were non-patriots too.
I don't suppose that you might want to comment on his speech or give us some positive news on Obama. Big article on Hillary's speech today...no mention of whether she was wearing a flag pin or not...btw she wasn't.
I guess it's time to get desperate?  If your ideas can't get the public's attention then go for the cheap ploy.  I don't think the American people are going to be fooled by this guy???????
Who cares.  MSNBC is owned by GE - a war contractor - and thus will go out of its way to give the masses anything but real news.
The issue is not about Obama's right to wear, or not to wear, a flag pin.  I think we're all pretty hip to what our civil rights are these days.  The question is, what is the basic message being communicated by the casting off of a symbol of our liberty and of our institutions of democracy?  This symbol transcends political party affiliation and serves to unite people, in spite of their differences, because we respect one another's right to self-determination.  Why would Obama need to dissociate himself with the symbol of America?  There's something NOT right about that.  What if the next contender for the Presidency of the Breast Cancer Foundation decided he or she was going to stop wearing his/her pink (breast cancer) lapel ribbon?  I think a few people within that organization would have a strange feeling in the pit of their stomach.  That's not the action of someone who is trying to UNITE, but rather the action of someone who is trying to DIVIDE. We don't need a civics lesson from Obama, thank you.  So, yes.  We have learned something about Obama through his actions.
To pin or not to pin?  Who cares?  Any other news?
Good Obama. You are a stand out in from the steriotypes.

Al, KS (Sent Thursday, October 04, 2007 4:01 PM)

If this is true the real questions becomes why didn't "First Read' know it.   Maybe they did...but like many of you noted they simply wanted to try to find something they thought was negative for Obama.

Bet if they knew hillary didn't wear one they wouldn't have printed the story...you guys are shameful
Good for you Obams, but you are too late to be first, I stopped carrying waving or saluting the flag a long time ago.  what does it stand for?  Patriotism?  Give me a break!  The only people who are waving the flag, and hailing the soilders for the good job they are done are the ones not facing the guns, and the ones who are getting rich.

We need to do something about the crises in America, then I'll wave the flag again
This morning, the president reported that his poop was yellow.
He probably took it off because either a super P.C. liberal took offense or He didn't want to offend is muslim buddies. We really don't know who he is.
