Obama explains not wearing flag pin

Posted: Thursday, October 04, 2007 3:11 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Per the AP, Obama has decided to stop wearing the American flag on his, well, lapel. He

told local Iowa TV station KCRG yesterday: "I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest. Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament to my patriotism."

This will likely prompt the unpatriotic shots from Republicans. Will Dems join in?

*** UPDATE *** This is what Obama said right before what's above: "The truth is that right after 9-11 I had a pin. Shortly after 9-11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security."

*** UPDATE 2 *** The Obama campaign passes along that he stopped wearing the pin years ago. Here’s the full context of what Obama said to the reporter:

QUESTION: "One last quick question, and this is just kind of a lighter note, you don't have an American flag pin on, is this a fashion statement? Those have been on politicians since September 12, 2001?"

OBAMA: "You know, the truth is that right after 9/11 I had a pin. Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest, instead I'm gonna try to tell the American people what I believe what will make this country great and hopefully that will be a testimony to my patriotism."

Wow democrats are sure a bunch of hateful, mean minded folks if the Obama fans in these comments are any representation!  Geez.  I guess I just don't understand irrational hatred for people that you just disagree with.  The pin is stupid, yes, but what is the big couragous move in NOT wearing it?  People don't wear the pin or rep the flag to show "chickenhawk" support for the war, or Bush, or whatever else hateful thing you have to say.  People wear it to show pride in the country, pride for our nation, our soldiers, our citizens.  Seems to me NOT wearing it, or at least animosity towards those that do, says more about you and your attitude towards the country.

I've never worn a flag pin, or been asked why I'm not wearing one. I don't have a support the troops stickers on my American made truck, or been asked where they are. Seems Liberals are the only ones who make an issue out of it either way. I do proudly wear a anysoldier.com cap ever once in while, but that's to advertise their site. Silly if the media asked him where it was, tacky if he volunteered the info.

and LMAO I'll bet Hillary will be wearing the biggest one ever seen soon.
To Big Grunt - overreact much?  It's a f*cking pin for crying out loud.  One would think you'd be slightly more upset with the people that keep blocking your ability to spend some time at home.
Perhaps he should hire a modern-day Speer to hang flags from every pedestal.  Why not stick some speakers behind the flags and pipe in applause?  Now there would be some patriotism...
Larry,

Actually, Obama's socks are black.  However, in some corners, people are questioning whether they are black enough.

Yes, this must be a slow news day.
I'm not surprised. Typical Liberal...
We all know that Liberals in general has a disdain for the military. It shows everyday whether you want to believe it or not. I'm glad these soldiers on here can see it.
I'm truly disheartened by this news ... who knew that a presidential candidate would disgrace himself in such a way ... I have several friends fighting for this flag Obama chose not to wear ... such a digrace sir, you should remove yourself from the race now!
J. Webster, Do you think Obama can't afford to get a new pin if one is lost. How much the pin costs? A couple of Billion Dollars?
He decided he is going to tell the people what he thinks now.
He thought the pin was talking to the people?
All signs (inner and outer) are symbols of what a person is.
He has decided to delete a sign / symbol because it was holding him back from sharing the true.

A minor detail but a major sign/symbol.
Think about it.
The issue is not about Obama's right to wear, or not to wear, a flag pin.  I think we're all pretty hip to what our civil rights are these days.  The question is, what is the basic message being communicated by the casting off of a symbol of our liberty and of our institutions of democracy?  This symbol transcends political party affiliation and serves to unite people, in spite of their differences, because we respect one another's right to self-determination.  Why would Obama need to dissociate himself with the symbol of America?  There's something NOT right about that.  What if the next contender for the Presidency of the Breast Cancer Foundation decided he or she was going to stop wearing his/her pink (breast cancer) lapel ribbon?  I think a few people within that organization would have a strange feeling in the pit of their stomach.  That's not the action of someone who is trying to UNITE, but rather the action of someone who is trying to DIVIDE. We don't need a civics lesson from Obama, thank you.  So, yes.  We have learned something about Obama through his actions.
Maybe he is using the old axiom "good press bad press keeps you in front of the public". Since he is behind in finances and the polls it's ilke chicken soup it can't hurt.
This is from the AP story linked in this Blog.

On Thursday, his campaign issued a statement: "We all revere the flag, but Senator Obama believes that being a patriot is about more than a symbol. It's about fighting for our veterans when they get home and speaking honestly with the American people about this disastrous war."

I cannot believe we are spending time even talking about this.  Why not report what he was actually in Iowa talking about - supporting and helping the troops.  Jeeeez.

Now this is interesting.  For a politcal party that is sooooo into symbols, i.e., the Democrats, now one of the lead Democrats isn't interested in symbols.  And what symbol isn't he interested in?  The flag.  This may be his last campaign mistake.
"Patriotism is the last bastion of a scoundrel." Good for you Barack, show up those phonies who have to wear a flag pin. Rush, Sean, Billo and the rest of the Republican slime machine will lambast you for this, but they couldn't carry you briefcase.
Thank God, someone bring this up. Flag pin wearing thing has been bugging the hell out me. It reminds me the Nazi and the Red China. People either irrational, like Bush or run out of idea of what to do.
The rest of the world is laughing at us. How could we go so low.
Lot of Obama-ites are going crazy on here. Obama is just another Howard Dean, I'm just waiting for that loud scream like moment.

Obama claims to work with Republicans. I have seen no evidence of that. He will just like others continue to divide this country apart.

I hope Obama supporter would look into Obama's most favorite republican candidate, Mike Huckabee.

I am sorry that I am responding to this non news again;but I can't help it.

The title "Obam stops wearing flag pin" is misleading especially in light of how he said it (He was wearing it shortly after 9/11 but then.....) We don't know if he stopped wearing it 5 days ago or 5 years ago. But if you read the head line you will think he just made an announcement about not wearing a lapel. Again this kind of half reporting without enough context and catchy but misleading headline is a disservice to the reader and not fair to the subject. An appropriate but not sexy headline for this story(non story) will be something like:
OBAMA ANSWERS WHY HE DOESN"T WEAR A FLAG LAPEL

I hope DOMENICO will show fairness again and change the headline to something more appropriate (or take the whole story down from this post).
Hey Rick my sister has one of those "support the troops" bumper stickers. She's not a soldier. Does that make her a chicken hawk? Does it make her husband, who's in Iraq, a chicken-hawk-husband? Doesn't your comment make you a dirt bag?
Like "C" from Washington DC and "Brian" from Utah stated: "Can't you wear a flag pin, and still act patriotic? ... No, the flag is not our country or patriotism.  But it is a symbol, and any potential president should wear it proudly."

I would go a step further and say any candidate wanting to represent THIS country...  SHOULD wear a flag pin AND should be Proud of this country!!!  Sure we haven't done everything right in the last 200+ years - But everyone must agree this is "one" of the best & freest countries in the world!  Anyone wanting to be president ought to be honored and humbled at having the chance to add their name to the list of people who have served their country!!!  It should be a damm privilege! to be an American Citizen! and if you don't love this country - Leave!  I'm not saying you have to be proud of EVERYTHING this country has done or is doing...but you should Damm well be proud of what this country has done to make this world a better place!  And if you don't think this country has made the world a better place by standing for justice and freedom not to mention numerous other things...  You are beyond reasoning - you can't think for yourself - or if you can, you should be locked-up or kicked out!!!
Domenico and Co.,
So this is journalism in this country. How far down you guys wanna go. Don't you need a minimum standard for the profession so that you guys can at least respect yourself at the end of the day. Who is wearing flag pin? How paris hilton feel in jail? How OJ Simpson get arrested? How larry craig is touching someone's foot in the men's room? You don't need to be a journalist to feed this crap to people 24/7. Half of this country's problem is stupid media and uneducated people. To make democracy work, you need responsible media and educated people who can think on their own as opposed to what crap Domenico and Chuck feed people.
So sad.  This is why we American's are so uninformed....because the media cares more about reporting on who's wearing what.  Why aren't these reporters asking real questions?
Guess what Guys...just saw Hillary on TV NO PIN...why aren't you reporting that !!!!!

You are insane...
haven't met anyone who uses a pin and is not patriotic, here you have a guy who iswilling to sit down with Castro, Chavez, and the crazy of Iran, what do they have in comun (the last 3)? they hate him because he represents freedon, is this guy suisadal or what?
Domenico is a moron of the highest order - by the way Fred Grampa Thompson still thinks the Soviet Union exists - couldnt find it anywhere here !! Given the standard of Montenauro's blog news I could think of many other things.
By the way has anyone seen the GOP logo for their convention - an elephant wearing blue stripes (signifying prison?) with a fairly wide stance(since Larry Craig is sticking around for this senate term, is he going to show up at the convention in Minneapolis?) bending down for a convention in Minneapolis !!! I kid you not:-)
Wow. It's staggering how many people don't even understand the point Obama's trying to make.

He's calling the pin-wearers phonies! Get it?

By not wearing the pin, he gets to talk about how the pin wearers talk the talk but don't walk the walk. I think this is a conversation we need to have because those pin wearers do a lot to hurt this country and our soldiers.

Don't be fooled by a pin. If you're fooled by a pin that's your business, just please don't vote and make it America's problem, too.
Republicans always wear the flag pins.  They say we are involved in the greatest struggle of our time.  Yet for such an important struggle they don't seem to care despite the pins.  If they cared they would recruit their sons and daughters to go fight instead of going to Wall St. or D.C. to simply make mega $$$.

If the Republicans really cared they wouldn't cite budget concerns while they cut veterans benefits.

But at least they have the pins. .... Thats important isn't it?
People who worship icons are missing the point.  Sure it's fine to wear a pin or thump a Bible, for that matter.  But I find that people who need symbols to define themselves are compensating for their lack of action.  Harry Truman once relayed that his grandfather had warned him, that when someone prayed too loud, "you better go home and lock up your smokehouse."- from Michael Beschloss' book 'Presidential Courage'

Obama's patriotism can be determined by his actions (he has lived a compelling American story and he wants this country to do the right thing.  That's my definition of patriotism as well; I want the United States to live up to its reputation as God's kingdom on earth.
Question - do the proceedes of those little pins and the bumper stickers go to the wounded vets and the families of those who lost their lives?  If the answer is no, then it becomes WAR PROFITEERING!!!!!!!!
I do not wear a pin but my blood bleeds an American Vet.
He's absolutely right.  Wearing a pin was a slap in the face to real patriots in the military that he undermines and demonizes daily while they protect his hypocritical a@%!  Not ready for prime time.  And never will be.
Why are the AP reporters so eager to write crap about Obama. Now many other idiot bloggers on the Internet is leading with the Lapel Pin story.  "Obama stops wearing Pin Flag", "Obama Dumps American Flag".  Blah, blah, blah.

It seems that the ugly net-roots are just eagerly waiting for some crap to write and all the other ugly people follow along.  Give me a break!
That is his choice. But we wish, who is taking
responsibilty for this contry economic and political scenarios.
For all you lefties, this is the future of news. Soften the reaction, flooding the media with more of this. Obama just wants to know how much $ it will take to overtake Hillary in the polls- Lucifer doesn't need cash!
Americans used to scoff at Soviet leaders who wore a pin of the Hammer and Sicle on their lapel.  I have always thought it is wolly nationalism; and indeed a silly act to wear that pin.

It has nothing to do with patriotism.  And patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel!!
Is he wearing a US flag pen? Is this a serious question? SO WHAT if he is not wearing a US Flag pen. This does not make him unpatriotic. Are you going to believe that if a candidate doesn't wear a pen, he is un-American. People think. This is a non-issue to take your mind off of what is the main issue is--where the candidates stand on issues. This is a very, very subtle character assination attempt. Stick with the issues, not the BS.
Perhaps Hillary has not faced questions regarding whether she wears a flag pin or not, but let's not be dishonest.  The media has had plenty to say about Hillary and her appearance over the past decade plus.  Recently, there has been much made of Hillary and her laugh.  Is her laugh really any more newsworthy than the lack of flag pin on Obama's lapel?

I think it's a stupid story, personally...but don't pretend like the other candidates don't fall victim to the slow news day here and there as well.
I think is a dumb move, wearing it does not hurt him why stop wearing it.
I am a woman that served in the armed forces, I pay my taxes and bills on time, when they are due.I believe in the Constitution and the american way of life,But I`ll be da**ed if i`ll wear a red, white and blue pin on a pink dress!!! I`ll bet half the illegals a nd terrorists crossing the border are wearing flag pins.
No need to be a Nationalist pig and wear a flag pin.  Go Obama!  Bring our troops home!
ANY ONE THAT IS WEARING OR FLYING A FLAG SHOULD FLY IT UP SIDE DOWN
THE UNITED STATES IS IN A CRITICAL MESS IN EVERYTHING
$$$/ TRADE DEFICIT/ JOBS BEING SENT TO OTHER COUNTRIES / DEVALUATION OF THE $$$/  THE YEN WILL PROBABLY OVER TAKE THE VALUE OF OUR CURRENCY
LOOFK FORWARD TO ANOTHER DEPRESSION / CAUSED BE OUR WONDERFUL LEADER'S / SELLING OUT THE COUNTRY TO SPECIAL INTRESTS, AND OTHER COUNTRIES /  YOU CAN BE SURE THEY HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THEM SELVES AND FAMLIES
The symbolism of flag pins has been defiled by the Bushite torture sadists who wear them as symbols of the Bush despotism. Normal people should therefore find other ways to show their patriotism, such as wearing lapel pins that say "Impeach Bush."
If he keeps shooting himself in the foot he'll never catch up with Hillary.  What happened to our wonder boy?
Please people read what question was asked by  the reporter:
*** UPDATE 2 *** The Obama campaign passes along that he stopped wearing the pin years ago. Here’s the full context of what Obama said to the reporter:

QUESTION: "One last quick question, and this is just kind of a lighter note, you don't have an American flag pin on, is this a fashion statement? Those have been on politicians since September 12, 2001?"

OBAMA: "You know, the truth is that right after 9/11 I had a pin. He was asked a question that he trufully answered.

BajanLuv, your correct in stating that;
1Soldier4U, NC:  You were never going to vote for him.
Wearing a pin of the american flag  does not make you
patriotic, hell if that is the case we are all quilty.

I don`t wear a pin or put a flag outside of my house and I have family members in Iraq, and I love my  country. They need to take this story and can it.
Try reportging all the things that he has accomplished

Grace, Ny, you are so right.  HRC was asked in the debate about the torture issue and she said that she
do not agree nad that she would talk to Bill about he convoctions to use torture, here she go again with the filp flopping.
Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.

We don't need no sticken flag.  It doesn't represent anything.  Only bigoted Republicans and the uneducated display the flag. Oh, how quickly we forget.
The flag, the pin, the notion of what it stands for, may not be visible to Liberals that have been lost in translation. The fact is this man chose to belittle our falg, a symbol of our glorious past and meaningful future. I can believe it's so easy for an individual aspiring to hold the highest office in the country to toy with something that the majority of us hold sacred to our hearts. What's next? Maybe  he'll wear an Iraqi Flag pin to make a point. As an ex soldier I am disgusted.
I, for one, believe that anything a political candidate says or does is ligitimate fodder for the media to report.  This WAS NEWS!  He'll end up paying for the stupid remark--after all, he brought up the subject before an audience and the media.
1Soldier I also retired from the military and  support Obama on this although he is not my first choice for president. Flying the flag has become a way of showing your patriotism. During my war WWII you showed your patriotism by showing up at the recruiting office. Bush has wrapped himself in the flag since he came into office and has done unspeakable harm not only to America but the entire world.
A month after 9/11 my family and I drove from Illinois to Maryland to visit relatives.  Every town, small and large, had The National Colors flying from almost every front porch and business building.  Last month we made the drive again to attend a wedding and there were very few flags to be seen.  The groom and most of the groomsmen are in the military.  Several guests are either currently in the military or veterans.  Nobody (Republican or Democrat) was wearing a flag pin.  My elderly Aunt says flags are to be flown, hung or placed on coffins; not worn on our clothing.
