After pin flap, Obama explains arugula

Posted: Friday, October 05, 2007 4:24 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Obama mentioned “arugula” again in Iowa, notes the Chicago Tribune’s The Swamp blog:

“…[H]e explained that he had been "teased" for previously mentioning arugula. ‘All the national press, they said, 'Oh, look at Obama. He's talking about arugula in Iowa. People in Iowa don't know what arugula is,'" he said. "People in Iowa know what arugula is. They may not eat it, but you know what it is.’

“Well, maybe.

They then quote three Iowans on the “leafy green” and “at least some in the crowd were a little confused.”

“ ‘I've heard of it, but I don't know what it is,’ said Richard Newton, a laborer and volunteer firefighter from Independence. ‘But I understood what he was talking about.’”

“Kay Hoffman, a hospital clinic assistant from nearby Aurora, Iowa, said she had never heard of it before, suspecting it might have something to do with Obama's Hawaiian upbringing. ‘I don't know what it is,’ she said. ‘Maybe it's a Hawaiian thing.’”

“James Sink, a retired manufacturing worker from Cedar Falls, Iowa, said he had no clue. ‘I had no idea what it is,’ he said.”

Earlier this year, Obama said, "Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula? I mean, they're charging a lot of money for this stuff." This prompted a Newsweek article dubbing it his “arugula moment” under the headline, “Fighting the Arugula Factor: He charms elites. But how does Obama woo a must-have: 'downscale Dems'?”

News? Got any?
by being his self. the guy likes what he likes i dont think "beer drinker " well take him to task for liking a little known fruit .
It is used as a leaf vegetable, which looks like a longer leaved and open lettuce. It is rich in vitamin C and iron. It is frequently cultivated, although domestication cannot be considered complete. It has been grown in the Mediterranean area since Roman times, and was considered an aphrodisiac.

Those dems are always trying to steer the conversation towards loving.  I mean, Oh, the lengths they will go.
Jesus Christ!!!! Doesn’t the media have anything better to cover. Can we start talking about REAL issues that affect this county please?
I haven't heard of aragula here in CT, either, but it appears to exist in certain states in the union.  The question is... why the hell does the national press care?  Is someone not adequately pandering and sucking up if they don't do an inventory of a state's vegetables before campaigning?

Does Obama call sandwiches subs or hogeys?  Film at 11.
You know, we would be better off reading the candidates speeches off their website than this sort of "reporting"--which selects the most trivial & stupid part. You add less than nothing. I don't know how you can pretend to belong to the same profession as the journalists who uncovered the torture memo or are in Baghdad interviewing witnesses about the Blackwater shootings. What are they paying you for? Who do you think benefits from this coverage, and who do you think cares?
Not Domenico - nope got none !!! Meanwhile in Minnesota a National Guard unit stayed and fought in Iraq for 729 days (that's right - approximately 25 months) at a stretch and are being denied GI Bill benefits (about $500 - $600 credits for education) because they were written up by the Dept of Defense for - get this - 729 days , not 730 days which is apparently the minimum required. How can the government be this heartless ? And of course MSNBC.com goes into a tizzy over Marion Jones, Lapel pins, chilli suace, Rosie versus Barbara and - I kid you not - arugula.
I seriously think that if Domenico and Chuck Todd and this entire blogsite disappeared the world would be a better place.
On the Minnesota story the entire Minnesota congressional delegation is trying to get this matter sorted out - God bless them (irrespective of R or D)
I've never heard of it.  Apparently it's some sort of leafy green vegetable thing.  In Iowa, we call that lettuce.
The View is taking over the world....... this kind of crap is sad.
Chuck Todd: I'm a decent writer. How can I get a gig with MSNBC talking about Arugula Moments (sounds kind of personal). What's the pay scale? is it by the pound or bunch?

Free of charge: kos has a report about some soldiers in Minn not getting their GI bill because their orders were 729 days - 1 day short of the necessary. They also cite an SF Chronicle article in which the US Govt is paying Blackwater security specialists $1222 a day...or about $450K a year.

Oh...they also have this hilarious thread where the netroots are teasing (and photoshopping) the new RNC logo. It's not a lapel pin, arugula or (heck) even broccolini...but it might do on a slow news day.
In case you are wondering whether the Tribune article is a hatchet job you need only read the last line of the article "Obama also mentioned almonds as a growing cash crop. Those come from inside candy bars, right?"

Chicago Tribune, please stop hurting America. Why do you hate this country and what it stands for?
News media alert!!! Next Obama gaffe he will go to NYC and talk about the price of collard greens.  When will he learn that you have to adjust your speech to the lowest common denominator of each region in which you speak.
We need a new heading at First Read -- Media Gaffes.
Aragula means "Pig-Farmer" in latin.  As in 'It sure smells bad, there must be a lot aragulas around here.'
You know, if you ever get a candidate from New Orleans, he'd be talking about his favorite food called Etouffee and nobody in Iowa would know what it is. It's a testament to how diverse America is. I truly believe it's this diversity that makes this nation great.
But what kind of cheese does he order on his Philly cheese steak?  C'mon MSNBC, you're missing the really big story!
Is the media calling out Obama on policy stances or his exchanges with other candidates?  With this and the pin-crap, I'm starting to believe that the media is the "naive" player in this campaign.

I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist, but it seems there is an unnecessary rush to judgment in the primaries.  Simple marketing states that sensationalism sells.  Policy is boring to most TV viewers.  Celebrity and the obsession with "gossip" have overtaken respectable journalism.

With all due respect, I understand your beholden need to your sponsors.  You've found your angle.  The story plays.  But such fluff is silly when your readers desire a debate on relevant issues.

We commend you for being quick to many of your stories.  But please spare us frivolous attack on any  of the candidates in this race.  The election of our  president should warrant more relevant reporting.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.
Our country is sleep walking and sleep talking through it's own decline in greatness.
We arrogantly ignore how others regard us while an Iraqi father continues to find pieces of his 11 year old son's, skull shattered by American steel fired by American hired mercenaries, as most of the country
makes excuses for the crime. And Candidates talk about arugula and the press reports it. And spineless Democrats see to their political fortunes. And morally repugnant Republicans fret about their's.

Here are the numbers for the young month.
No names anymore. FirstRead doesn't post them.
No sense personalizing a War for the nation involved in it I guess.

It would seem that the hotdog and iceberg lettuce crowd is what passes for first read readers.

Surely, you jest when you say you don't know what arugula is?
I keep forgetting that most of what Obama says is taken as either a gaffe or a rookie mistake.  it is interesting how everything he does and says gets so twisted by the press. why is that.  Do you guys, especially the people on MSNBC fear that much that Obama will make your girl, Hillary look out of touch and old and foolish?
Is this a joke? THIS is a story? Where's the article about Obama's rally in Iowa today, and his speech on getting help to our veterans?

The corporate media is so out of touch, it's pathetic.
In the 1988 campaign, the issue was Belgian endive.  Google Dukakis +endive and see what comes up, especially the piece in the N.Y. Times of September 20, 1988.
Are you kidding me this is a story?  Hillary is associated with people who are defending hired killers (Blackwater) and Obama gets a vegetable and pin story blasted across the headlines. I must be living in the Twilight Zone. Is this a different string theory universe? Obama is working on civil rights issues and fairness for farmers and he gets stick the pin in the vegetable. Where in the world can I find real news? Can someone shut down Drudge report? The big news agencies don't bother to do any reporting anyway.

Here is an idea. Investigate lobby ties or political favors Clinton might be getting through her
Blackwater associates. Do the people have to tell you how to do your jobs? How can we get your salaries?
For all we care, it may be what he uses for toilet paper! I agree with the majority of the readers, why don't you write about REAL news!
It just seems that he is just to intelligent to appeal to lower class America. To appeal to voters in Iowa, he has to dumb his self down and that is just not him.
The Chicago tribune hates democrats since before Truman they are the paper who printed DEWEY WINS in large type across the front page next morning Truman with a smile from ear to ear was photographed holding up a coy of the tribune.
Aragula?

He could be talking about some new kind of grass that liberals ought to be smoking.  Maybe he will telling everyone to put down those corn cobs and start getting into hippie lettuce.
What liberal media?
stick with the corn dogs jerry :)
