Oh-eight (R): In search of the GOP soul

Posted: Monday, October 08, 2007 9:26 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

And what about the future of the GOP? The Washington Times does a preview of sorts of the HBO doc "Mr. Conservative" about Barry Goldwater. It airs in Nov and the report notes it may lead to more soul-searching for the GOP. For now, some conservatives argue that going back to basics is what the GOP needs -- "limited government, free enterprise, a strong military, among other things."

CBN's Brody reports, "Rudy Giuliani has every intention of attending the Family Research Council's Value Voters Summit. An announcement is in the works. The Brody File is told that the hold up is a scheduling matter but Giuliani wants to go and both sides are working on the details.

This is significant. The FRC event is scheduled for Friday October 19th and Saturday October 20th. It will be a "who's who" of big time conservatives. Speakers include Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Tony Perkins of FRC, James Dobson of Focus on the Family and yes, with Giuliani likely to now attend, all the Republican Presidential candidates will speak. After the event on Saturday, results of the straw poll will be announced. This will be a very good indication of who religious conservatives will support.

The fact that Giuliani would even show up is a good move. Some may say what's the point with critics like Dobson and Perkins in the audience. But the Giuliani camp has never backed down from their assertion that they are going hard after the social conservative vote. Polls show the Mayor leads with weekly Church attendees. Giuliani is clearly not intimidated and will lay out his vision for the country. They may not agree with his pro-choice views (and a few other things too) but if the past is any indication, he'll most likely talk about adoption, making abortion rare, school choice and strict constructionist judges. Oh yeah, and 9/11 too. He won't get the single-issue voters but how many can he pick up with his broader message?

GIULIANI: This being Columbus Day (a HUGE holiday in NYC), the N.Y. Daily News profiles Giuliani, the Italian. One thing that may be news to some -- Giuliani apparently first verbalized his ambition to be president in 1963. Also, "there is some evidence that Giuliani's candidacy has sparked a flicker of pride in (some of) the nation's vast Italian-American community, much like Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton has drawn strong support from women and Mitt Romney has stirred Mormons.

About 12% of contributions to Giuliani's campaign have come from Italian-Americans, based on a review by The News. That's about double the percentage drawn by Republican rivals John McCain and Romney, and one-third higher than the portion received by Clinton, the review found."

A fascinating new gambit from Giuliani while he was campaigning in Florida over the weekend: NBC-NJ's Matthew Berger reports that Giuliani was looking for disenchanted Florida Democrats to switch parties and vote in the GOP primary since their Dem vote won't count.

MCCAIN: The New York Times notes how the candidate’s “Fall From The Top Lands McCain In Comfort Zone.”

PAUL:
Ron Paul has an op-ed in the New Hampshire Union Leader today, which responds to a negative editorial he rec'd from one of the nation's leading conservative editorial pages: "A Paul administration would see Americans engaged overseas like never before, in business and cultural activities. But a Paul administration would never attempt to export democracy or other values at the barrel of a gun, as we have seen over and over again that this is a counterproductive approach that actually leads the United States to be resented and more isolated in the world."

ROMNEY: Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker makes the case for Christian conservatives to back Romney and that they should overlook the Mormon thing. "Ultimately, Christian leaders (some of whom make off-the-record, supportive calls to Romney, I'm told) most likely will back the Mormon. But their actions meantime have hurt Romney as he tries to close the deal nationally. If they were smarter, they'd embrace Romney as the one who can beat Hillary because he, more than anyone else, unites all wings of the party -- economic, security and social."

NBC/NJ's Erin McPike reports, amid two days of intense campaigning in the Granite State on Thursday and Saturday, Romney’s campaign dropped its first piece of direct mail there over the weekend, and the focus was his commitment to fiscal conservatism. Saturday’s mailer in the state that carries the motto “Live Free or Die” followed a radio ad the campaign debuted on Friday touting Romney’s vow to roll back taxes. And Friday’s ad was sandwiched between a volley between the Romney and Giuliani camps over their respective economic records – all ahead of this Tuesday’s economy-focused CNBC/Wall Street Journal debate.

Per the Union-Leader Romney also went to "swanky country clubs in New Castle and Bedford to snowmobile races in a cow pasture in Fremont."

Is this a preview of Romney’s Kennedy-esque speech on being Mormon? Portsmouth Herald: He was asked about his religion. Romney, to reporters: "I'm not a spokesman for my faith. My church has the responsibility to talk about the doctrine of the church."

The Nashua Telegraph’s Landrigan wonders if Romney’s support is soft in New Hampshire: "It's appropriate to wonder if Romney's $3 million TV advertising campaign in New Hampshire has generated a good return on investment, with Giuliani and John McCain drawing ever closer in recent polls. Romney consultant Rich Killion said if given the chance, they would do it the same way, as the ads made Romney a better-known and more popular commodity."

THOMPSON: The New York Times previews Fred Thompson's potential as a debater. He really hasn't debated since 1994. "A look at some of Mr. Thompson’s debates years ago offers a mixed picture, with the candidate mostly projecting calm and confidence against" his '94 Dem foe, Jim Cooper.

"Mr. Thompson’s delivery back then was usually smooth and expressionless, not a monotone but not displaying much charisma, either. He sounded articulate, speaking in full, well-rounded sentences, but stopped short of eloquence. Even when he was on the attack, or firing back at a rough question, he rarely lost his cool."

The most interesting thing about Thompson's debate prep for tomorrow? Ex-GOP Sen. Al D'Amato has been playing Giuliani

The WSJ reports Thompson plans to release an economic plan that "seems likely to go further than his rivals. He has hinted at politically risky proposals to rein in Social Security and Medicare benefits. And he appears to be heading toward proposing tax-code changes to help lower corporate tax rates, as well.

But Mr. Thompson may have trouble balancing his pitch to small-government purists with his quest for popular support in the competitive early-voting states. Even as he decried what he described as Washington's dependence on pork-barrel spending last week, he reversed position after touring an Iowa ethanol plant, saying he now supports subsidies for alternative fuel."

As for taxes, here's what Thompson said last week: "We are only one of two nations that hasn't reduced its corporate tax rate since 1994. It should be reduced to at least 28% in this country."

Mr. Thompson's aides outline a change to the tax code that would move away from taxing income or profits and shift toward a system that would reduce taxes on exports when they cross the border and impose them on imports when they enter the country. Under international rules, the European value-added tax, a kind of sales tax, is waived for exports, but those rules block the U.S. from reducing corporate-profit taxes for exporters.

AmSpec's Jennifer Rubin seems to be impressed with the "SNL" spoof on Thompson.

Steven P. I think you have organic brain syndrome. You need meds boy, or perhaps a bottle of vodka. You can't even decide which party you back!
juan,ft lauderdale,fl (Sent Monday, October 08, 2007 11:38 AM)

Nice job Juan!!!
Can we get back to fundamental conservatism in the GOP already?  Enough with the Neocons and thier foreign inteventionism and the Evangelicals with thier desire to incorporate federal control of marriage and family issues.

Last I heard, foreign inteventionism and expansion of federal government role were LIBERAL policies!

Funny that Dobson could actually think he could advance an anti gay agenda in the party of the Log Cabin Republicans and the gay advocate in chief, Dick Cheney!
do any of you have jobs?
My hope is that Ron Paul will win the presidency. The other republican candidates have no business having their names on the same page as Barry Goldwater...they represent everything he stood against.
Interesting that Week after Week Juan can make his racist remarks but when I turn the table on him I am attacked for being a Racist. That is exactly why this country is going down the tubes. This political correct garbage is really what is dangerous to our freedoms. Week after Week after Week Juan just spouts the GOP represent conservatives when in fact that could not be further from the truth. The fact is that the GOP basically gave us conservatives the finger. The GOP had been taken over by the far Religious Right which does not represent true conservatives. I and I'm sure a lot of conservatives voted these people out of office in the last election because they betrayed our values.
graveyard blues
Regardless of your stance on certain issues, the presidency comes down to trust that the elected official will carry out the will of the people to the best of his ability without succumbing to corruption.  Ron Paul is the Only GOP candidate who can do that.
Great post, Juan - you are more of an American than steven p., simply due to the manner by which you treat others here.  Steven P is a disgusting, racist idiot.  I am proud you are here.

Susan - also nice post.  Jerry is a dolt.

Notice neither jerry nor Steven had anything positive to say?  Must be frightening to see what is to come next November.
"see Steve, freedom of speech is alive and well; that is as long as you agree with the lefty storm troopers!"

Thanks for the update on what FOX SPEWS is saying today. "Freedom of speech" is unnecessary for the zieg heil party, since you have your opinions fed to you with a spoon.
Steven P - I do not think that I have read any racist comments from Juan.  Cite examples, please.  FYI, calling the GOP "conservatives" is not a racist rant, as I believe you are claiming in your post.
You have to remember Juan came here from Cuba because he wanted freedom to be a teacher and other stuff.  You have to give him credit for that........

However, the way he yearns for a socialist paradise and the way he has been trained in the liberal world, one has to wonder if he would be happier drinking an espresso and watching the crowds on the main drag in Havana.
Steven P. We are impressed with your cleverness- to outsmart Juan..run circles around him like you did. You are an arrogant, pompous ass. But you knew that already, of course.
The GOP, the real conservatives, have never stood up against Bush and religious right even to this day.So cut the crap Steven P. You are so phoney and self righteous... and republican.
Damn the Repubs for having religion in politics, and damn the Liberals for being too politically correct.  Makes me proud to be a registered independant :)

People just need to do their jobs, and quit shoveling BS.  That's the answer to solving everyone's problems, no matter where you're from.
Juan, not for nothing I am all for immigration...as long as it is done LEGALLY, people sneak over the borders, get welfare, medicaid, their kids go to school on our tax dollars.  This is WRONG..my grandparents were immigrants, one of my best friends came over here when he was 1 y/o.  But they did it within the guidelines of immigration and naturalization.  So Steve may be out of line with his comments to you, adn I think it is great how you came here and did something with your life, but do you honestly want to become the majority dut to the illegal actions of others?  They want to be here fine, then apply for a green card, come here get a job, pay your taxes, learn to speak the language of the land,(English),and then be welcome to enjoy all the immenities that this country has to offer, otherwise stay in your own country.
Steven-Since when does the Gop represent conservative values? I attack those who hide behind so called moral family values like Vitters, Foley, Delay, Gingrich, Craig, and others who used Karl Rove's playbook to delude the masses like yourself to vote for them. They use the fear card, tax cuts that are really for the wlthy/corporations, 50 yr old McCarthisms like Liberal is bad, Socialism is Communism, and judicial activism which is the Fundalmentalism way of gutting our constitution. I  am sorry that you allowed the right wing neo-cons religious fanatics from taking over your party. How gullible. Us like minded Democrats, progressives, true Goldwater (rolling in his grave) conservatives who do not bankrupt our country need to fight back and regain our great country back.
Susan in Miami:

How are you going to vote for Hillary when your Uncle Howard has stated the vote won't count?

VoiceOfReason,
The comparison with Lincoln may be well intentioned but is not historically accurate.  Lincoln suspended habeus corpus, imprisoned his opponents in the northern press, deported an Ohio congressman for openly criticizing him on the floor of the House, unleashed federal troops on draft protestors in New York City, imposed an income tax and declared war on his own country.  A Bush Lincoln comparison would be more appropriate.
Susan in Miami,
Thank you for admitting that a Hillary presidency will result in a "Nanny" state in which the government is responsible for taking care of every little thing we do.  As you mentioned, Hillary will make sure Jerry's diaper is changed and he is fed his nightly bottle.  Out of curiosity for the rest of us who believe in personal responsibility and accountability, what should we do when she is elected?  Give up our individual thoughts, feelings, hopes and dreams just so Big Sister Hillary can take care of us?  No thank you.  I actually think this country would be better off if the federal government had less power than it does today.  I understand that Bush has done a decent job at expanding the government, but I am just sick to my stomach at the thought of the socialistic state Hillary will inevitably attempt to create.
Conservatives are nostalgic for Goldwater. Hillary was a Goldwater girl in college. Republicans hate Hillary. I'm so confused!
Thompson is the man if he gets everything together.  Which i hope he does cause, he has a plan and it should work.
Ron Paul for the Win!!!!

America needs Ron Paul if he is not our next President we are doomed.

http://RonPaul2008.com
I did some reading at the Ron Paul library website, and he comes across as a populist telling people what they want to hear. There is more than a bit of self-contradiction there.

One example is he opposes abortion, but also opposes the most effective methods to prevent abortions. People that don't get pregnant don't have abortions.

Another is that his proposed solutions to most problems, including health care, is to issue tax breaks. But he also advocates eliminating income taxes, which renders his proposed tax cuts useless.

He wants to balance the budget and pay down the national debt, good, though that promise has been routinely violated by Republicans. His plans to cut unecessary spending is good, but insufficient to balance his planned massive tax cuts, so uner his program deficit spending would continue.
"First there was Barry Goldwater. Then there was Ronald Reagan."

Colleen, you obviously don't know anything about Goldwater if you equate him in any way to Reagan. Reagan was a big government, big deficit Republican...just like Duh-Bya Bush and now "Flip-Flop" Freddie Thompson.

Reagan funded the mujahideen, which became Al Qeada, which attacked us on 9/11. We need another Reagan like we need a another hole in NYC.

BTW, I encourage everyone to rediscover the soul of the GOP. Start with their poster boy, Larry Craig. An extreme whitey tighty Rightie closeted homosexual in denial. THAT is the best definition of the GOP I've ever seen.
Swanky? I was there and Mitt had about 50 people listening.
Legalize the U.S. Constitution.  Vote Ron Paul.
what r u guys going to do for the future?
Less Ron Paul, more Mitt Romney, please!

Smartest candidate on the block, and he WILL stand up for GOP ideals, while using his own head.
Rudy Giuliani, the guy with an ex cousin/wife, estranged kids, exactly what the "family" orientated religious conservative DO NOT WANT.

Fred Thompson is better off at playing someone important on tv, his debating skills are worse than that of a 5 year old.

Mitt Romney is going to go BROKE with his current spending, it it weren't for his own bank account he would be already out of the race.

Mike Hucka-whoo?

I think Ron Paul will win the nomination, wait till his next quarter fund raising, wait till his message is received by millions more, wait till he destroys Hillary's socialistic nightmare.

Ron Paul 2008... He only has one "special interest"....One "Lobby,"  The American People- their prosperity, liberty and freedom...
I would like to be a fly on the wall while Romney team cooks him up some more "values."

Watch this one!!

Dobson's Focus on the Family is affiliated with the Family Institute, one of the Conservative groups Romney doled out 100's of 1000's of dollars to, just before his campaign, (who Romney had never "contributed" to in the past, nor any groups like this)who criticized Romney's liberal stand as MA gov, but since donation has shown Romney support.

--Stephen P.--GOP hardly represents Religious right extremists. They represent Corporate America extremists. You know, the ones who would sell their own mothers for the right price?

--Pete Caloger--I'm glad someone out there has good vision! Can spot a fraud.
Ron Paul is pretty fringe. While I agree with him that we need to withdraw form Iraq, lets see what else he favors.

Home-schooling. That's right, the same public school system that used to be the envy of the world. Let's just disolve the tax base that pays for this by giving a tax break to homeschoolers. How qualified to these folks need to be? How soon until 'intelligent design' is considered science and evolution is 'just a theory' (like gravity, ya know)

Eliminate the capital gains tax. You know, that money investors make of the sweat of other people? Allegedly, the money these businesses (and uber-wealthy venture capitalists) save will increase jobs for us workin Joes! Its called Trickle Down Economics. It didn't work 25yrs ago, it won't work now.

Health Care. Where is his plan to include 47 MILLION people who are completely uninsured? What about the millions more who are underinsured? Or should people be continued to be murdered by spreadsheet? Sorry Timmy, no life-saving surgery for you, your parents dont have insurance. Maybe they should have worked harder.

Kucinch is just as honest as Ron Paul and they both have just as much chance of winning. I do regret money is as necessary for electoral success and the campaign system needs major overhaul. But both of these candidacies are DOA.

Good Point, Jesse...

You forgot to add that Ron Paul advocates the elimination of the IRS, the Federal Reserve System and a return to the Gold Standard...

It is sad to see people supporting a man whom would utterly wreck the economy...
Ron Paul is by FAR the closest Republican to Barry Goldwater--the other candidates aren't even close.
You know, people, two things: 1) Before the GWB junta with his "we don't torture" squads,  a president could "advocate" a lot of crap, but the electorate, co-equal congress, and non-ideolog Supreme Court kept things in....dare I say it?....check.

But you savey law and order BushCo Associates have let him rape the Constitution, you fiscal conservative republicans have let him mortgage America to China, and you small governemnt right wingers have let the vice president create an office which might wield more power the the presidency.

2) Anyone who voted for Bush even once who calls any other 35 yo US Citizen (who's lived here 14 years) in any way, shape or form unqualified to be president deserves to be hit in the back of the head with a shovel.
Actually, Giuliani IS alot like Goldwater........do you know what kind of chutzpah it took to turn NYC around and introduce WELFARE REFORM @ ground zero of the welfare state???...........As an ex-New Yorker, I can tell you that Giuliani was the only mayor who stood up to the selfish minorities bent on partitioning the city & making it not fit to live in.
Giuliani made it so millions of people could live a decent life in a city that is "Holy Ground" for all immigrant off-spring that prospered in America(myself included)If Giuliani is not the next President,America's descent toward Socialism will be accelerated!
Zen, people like you are afraid of less government, why is that?  Can you not exist without the government helping you out.  Ron Paul is the best Candidate for President, and I believe he will be our next President. I am so sick of people thinking they cannot survive unless Big Brother Government is helping them out every step of the way.  Wake up people and start being responsible. Read up about Ron Paul on his web site, and stop paying attention to folks who really don't know what he is all about, please.  I am an ex Democrat, now a Republican so I can vote for Ron Paul.

http://RonPaul2008.com

The only candidate in the GOP that will stand against Hillery is one who can garner swing votes from the Democratic Party and who will garner the majority of the Independant voters.  The GOP has lost a good part of its base and is a weak party because of the disgraceful president we have.

There is only one GOP candidate who will win against Hillery and that is Ron Paul.  The only point that Hillery stands on that may pull voters is her promise of universal health care that many people seem to think will work.  Ron Paul is a medical doctor himself and an absolute expert when it comes to Constitutionality of things.  He has the first hand experience that can expose why this would be very bad for America and drive up health care costs even more and put our taxes through the roof to afford it.

Goldwater is turning in his grave. It is an insult to make any comparison to the so-called "value voters" speakers.

A walk through the conservative conscience of the GOP would scarely wet one's feet.
Zen_pollo, congress would never let him achieve those ill-thought aims but he would stop the violations of the constitution and return the rule of law and dignity to the US and get us out and keep us out of un-necessary wars. He is not my first choice for president but he is my first choice for a Republican president and he even beats out a couple of Democratic candidates.
It's either Ron Paul - or a democrat.  Simple as that - no other GOP'rs got even a remote chance.  I'm really hoping it's Obama vs. Ron Paul in 2008.  Then at least I'll have to actually think about who to vote for (and I'd feel much better about living in the US).  In the end though it's Ron Paul all the way.
Zen_pollo seems to be a professional spin-meister. Whose campaign do you work for, Zen? It's time for a change, and whoever it is that you work for, or "support", is selling you a bill of goods.

Get used to freedom, because you're about to have it in abundance.

Ron Paul 2008.
Ron Paul = no Social Security = no Medicare
= NO CHANCE!!  Don't forget no support in high places either.

Get real on the Libertarian issue all you well informed voters.  Too bad, because he's otherwise got a few good ideas, unlike the rest of
the GOP stable.

The republicans that jump ship to vote for Paul as a write-in candidate will help ensure Hillary's victory dance.  Have at it!!
Lincoln, Goldwater and Ronnie Raygun are the names that continue to crop up from the rebumplicans. Hero worship can only go so far. Rebums are trying to put thier candidates in this mold of three. Rebums need a real live american to run in their party. the base wants a Jesus with conservative credentials, neo-cons want a Joseph Stalin with sex appeal, fiscal cons want an Allen Greenspan with face appeal, small gov. cons want a candidate that will work part-time and that is why the dems will win in 08. You can't get what you want when there is a standard of appeal that makes the candidate a many faced appratus for too many conflicting views. We Democrats take our candidates with warts and all, we know they are just as human as we are and understand this. Rebumplikans want a demi-god to worship. This will be the beginning of the end for the GOP, the party is fractured and falling apart everyday. George Bush got his revenge for how the rebums left his old man blowing in the wind. Thanks George you did our job for us!
Teehee....

I don't work for any coampaign.  I just think Ron Paul is over-hyped as being the "Savior" of the Constitution...

Tess:  I read Ron Paul's site.  For example, here it clearly states that Ron Paul is against mandatory vaccination:

http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/health-freedom

HOW CAN ANYONE VOTE TO INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF A SMALLPOX EPIDEMIC IN THE U.S. ????  The U.S. has spent years fighting Small Pox and this Jack*$$ wants to undo all this work.  You see, in this case libertarians are plain wrong:  YOUR bone-headed choice to NOT vaccinate against Small Pox could kill ME or My Family...this is why we need Public Health Standards...

There are other contradictions:

For example:  Ron Paul enthuasiasts like to claim he is not beholden to special interests and then he advocates a return to the Constitution yet in this section:

http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/social-security/

Ron Paul is clearly pandering to the AARP lobby.  I have some news for you people:

SOCIAL SECURITY consumes 2/3 thirds of all our tax revenue -- and Social Security is mentioned NOWHERE in the Constitution...Moreover, here:

http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/debt-and-taxes/

Ron Paul argues for aggressive Tax-cuts.

Simple Math:

Tax Cuts(For retired folks and others) + Same Spending(In Social Security) = Decifit Spending == Same as the NeoCons

So tell me again why Ron Paul is better than any of the other Repubs?

Respectfully,
ZP

P.S.  Nuanced, I agree
