Iowa, Iowa, Iowa

The collective press corps is coming to agreement that Iowa is everything for the Democrats, meanwhile, what role the state will play on the GOP side is still getting sorted out by the conventional wisdom crowd.

VIDEO: NBC's Political Director Chuck Todd offers first read on Iowa polls.

Of course, the big news is the Des Moines Register poll, which showed Clinton now on top (first time she's been in the lead in this poll), Edwards slipping and Obama flat. On the GOP side, the candidates with something to gloat about this morning are Thompson (who surges to second) and Huckabee (who is NARROWLY ahead of Giuliani) in third.

The Des Moines Register reports that John Edwards is attributing lost ground in the latest poll to his rivals' heavy spending on TV advertisements in Iowa. "It’s a little difficult to figure out where to go with me because I haven’t spent any money on ads," he said Sunday.

(He actually said something similar and a bit more coherent on Saturday after his speech at the Johnston County BBQ: "Senator Clinton and Senator Obama are pouring millions of dollars into here, including millions of dollars on television" he told reporters. "We will run television here, I don't mean to sound holier than thou, but I don't believe caucus goers make their decision about who they're going to support based on television ads.")

Could one of the bigger reasons why Obama is flat and Clinton is surging is that she's tapping into the support of older women?

Notes Yepsen: "One reason for some of this movement lies in the demographics of just who plans to go to a Democratic caucus. Among likely Democratic caucusgoers, 62 percent are women, and Clinton carries more of them -- 34 percent -- than any other candidate. She finishes third among male Democrats, winning only 21 percent. The numbers prove what you can see in her crowds, which are often filled with older, working women. There seems to be power behind the unstated message that "it's our turn."

Obama is placing a big bet on attracting young people to the caucuses, despite the fact they're notoriously poor voters and caucusgoers. Only 2 percent of likely Democratic caucusgoers are under age 25, while 51 percent are over age 55. On top of that, only 23 percent of the Democrats say this will be their first caucus.

Also, don't miss the stunning drop-off for Barack Obama among voters 65 and over. He leads Clinton by 6 points with voters under 44 (33% to 27% respectively), but he's a whopping 25 points behind her for the oldest demo. (He's at 11%, Clinton at 36%, Edwards at 20% favorability) That's a trend I've seen reflected in voters... One elderly woman in Iowa City told me that hope's all fine and good, but Barack Obama just doesn't understand that her entire Social Security check goes to pay for her husband's meds every month. And a number of older voters I talked to registered genuine outrage about his blowoff of the AARP forum. The Obama folks won't be happy I said it, but the average age of a caucus-goer is a heck of a lot closer to 65 than 18.

Clinton addressed one of her poorer poll showings in the Register, which indicated that both Edwards and Obama were stronger than her on "integrity and morality."

“In a democracy, you can make a judgment based on anything,” Clinton said in a Des Moines Register interview in Anamosa. “But I’m gratified that a lot of people are really coming around to support me after they really get to see me as who I am.”

Still, Clinton rated highest on the "characteristics of leadership, experience, toughness, intelligence and electability, with more than 40 percent of those polled seeing her as the strongest on each trait."

Des Moines Register's Yepsen blogs that the latest poll is bad news for Clinton and Romney. Why? Because they are ahead.

"If they win now, it may be shrugged off as no big deal because everyone “expected” it would happen. If they come in second or third, it will be pegged as a big loss because, after all, they were “expected” to come in first. Want proof? Go to any Clinton or Romney staffer or campaign leader today and tell them: It’s great to see you’re the frontrunner in Iowa. Watch them wince."

Want to get an understanding of just how serious the Democrats are taking Iowa? The field collectively has approx. 500 paid staffers on the ground. Yes, 500 staffers. Wow. NBC-NJ's Carrie Dann breaks down the Democratic staff and endorsement primary in the state.

Chicago Tribune's McCormick notes the attention the Democrats have given the state. "So far this year, Edwards has been to 80 of the state's 99 counties, while Obama has been to 56, according to their campaigns. As of Friday, Clinton had been to just 31, her Iowa spokesman said." The piece goes on to note how the candidates are pushing themselves to visit the most rural parts of the state because as many long-time Iowa observers know, the 15% "threshold" rule is just as meaningful for succeeding at a caucus precinct, whether in highly populated Johnson County, or sparsely populated Washington, Iowa.

I love how you guys jump at anything to promote Hillary and lambast both Edwards and Obama.
Last week Obama was on top in Iowa and now he is flat not relevant.
Tell me, How much does the Clinton campaign pay you and the rest of the puppets at msnbc?
Hillary is looking like the Top Seed in The Great Iowa Wrestle-Off.  Iowans don't mind women wrestling. Remember, an Iowa gal wrestled the late Andy Kaufman on TV and showed him what a Granby Roll was all about. As for the GOP, with all the baggage they are bringing into 2008, they could sit in the Whirlpool and spit Cotton for this next year, and still not make weight.  Can you say Ms. President?
While the polls may prove prophetic, all people intending to vote should make their decisions and cast their votes based on which candidate they truly believe will do the best job.  I have a suspicion that the actual vote tallies may very well differ markedly from the results that the polls seem to be predicting.  I seem to recall such results having occurred in the not too distant past.
If integrity and morality is the central issue, there is just no way any Clinton could win in that race.

If the woman is screaming now about her social security check going to medication, just wait till she gets the bill from Hillary Clinton.

I guess the unemployment rate in Iowa should jump as soon as the Iowa caucus is done.

Hillary has not answered the hard questions yet, so she can hold her lead.  The big question is how she will do in the general debates, instead of theses lounge parties she goes to with her democratic rivals.
Diane...well said.  When Obama led they didn't have titles like OBAMA SURGES instead "Iowa is a statistical tie" ( BTW it still is).

I agree with Edwards when we go to war with Iran she'll say " If I knew then what I know now"

Those older ladies should look closer at Hillary's plan for SS...oh that's right she doesn't have one.  Doesn't even know what she will or won't do.

Smoke another bowl of weed diane, maybe you'll calm down. If you would listen to all the journalists and shows on MSNBC, you would see that they attack Hillary all the time AND have bashed the Clintons for years, over and over. Cut the crap and quit whining.
You know things are going well when you lash out and accuse everyone of being against you. No, wait, that's paranoia.
The polls are rigged, the media is a co-conspirator, everyone who doesn't agree with me is uninformed, brainwashed, stupid, or worse.
If things started suddenly going your way, would that indicate that your candidate had made a better pact with the devil, becoming PART of the machine, or that the sour grapes, wild accusations and paranoid fantasies were just that?
I agree with the first comment. The national media does jump on anything that helps Hiliary. I just read another story about the new Iowa poll that shows Hiliary ahead and in that story they made sure to mention that her lead was within the margin of error for the poll.

Come on guys, we know you predicted Hiliary would win and you are doing everything you can to make your predictions correct, but for crying out loud give the other candidates their due. Let Clinton win fair and square and stop trying to artifically pump her up.
bb: I watch MSNBC occasionally and never hear them bashing Clinton. I hear them constantly bashing Bush, but they are always riding the Clinton's jock. Watch Chris Mathews sometimes and see how a grown man salivates over the mention of Clinton. Watch Keith Olbermann and see and idiot in action.
NBC, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MTV, and Nickelodeon, have made their choice, and it is Hillary.

No doubt the netwroks exit polls the night of the election will show Hillary with a big win, only to be followed by the reality that the voters didn't pick her. This has become somewhat of a tradition for the networks.

Oh my... if this is really true, then I finally figured out how Bush won the White House... twice.

P.S. - bb, I have to agree with diane - I've been watching these online news articles for MONTHS, and you've been fooled.  They even used to have an advertisement for Hillary's campaign website for about a week or so.  You can't get more biased than that.
Jerry I second that add rudy to your list and macain and fred.Rudy the womaniser against the woman scorned in hilliary. An oath breaker against a marriage saver.
Wait to IMUS returns in December. MSNBC in the morning will take a nose dive.  He is the only thing that put these guys on the map. Joe in the morning has got to be packing his bags already.

BTW I don't approve of what he said ...but I'm not convinced its any worse than what these guys do everyday.  Racism, is Racism subtle or overt.  One would expect as much from FOX but the so called liberal MSNBC

Hey Chuck Todd, I'm still waiting to read that article of yours that goes into detail about your comments on MSNBC where you told us the insiders don't like Edwards. It would make a great story so why is it that you haven't written it?  Are you afraid that the story might actually help Edwards if the voters knew that the insiders are hoping Edwards loses?
I think we should begin questioning the republicans running for president. How come nobody mentions the republicans, like, what are their plans for the economy---we already know aside from ron paul, they all love the Iraq war and would love to strike Iran for Bushie.Come on what do fred, rudy, romney, etc stand for besides george bush?
Chris Mathews is always bashing Hillary, BB you are right.
bb: '...Smoke another bowl of weed diane, maybe you'll calm down....'

The Clinton 'charm offensive' continues....
bb never has anything meaningful to say.
Just insults.
That little boy is a typical Clinton Cultist

'...Clinton addressed one of her poorer poll showings in the Register, which indicated that both Edwards and Obama were stronger than her on "integrity and morality."...'

Gee, I wonder if Norman Hsu has anything to do with that ?
How about Peter Paul ?
How about Mark Penn and Blackwater, do that showcase Hillary's 'integrity' ?
Maybe people notice that scandals are always bubbling around Hillary.....

Hillary Clinton, 15 years of dishonesty, scandal and divisiveness
Another Media Bias, Clinton Surge in IOWA polls. But when she's trailing they called it virtual tied.
Hillary, Hillary, Hillary. Her nomination is inevitable!

-The media is so predictable.

Watch for the next phase where they start picking her apart.
Did you bother to mention this so-called poll has a small sample size of 400 people.  Not exactly representative of the collective electorate.
Not long after Bill was elected President, women across America began revealing that they were dreaming about him.  I'd say that men across America and more than a few on this blog, will soon (if they aren't already) start dreaming about Hillary. I'd also venture that some of her biggest detractors on here, are at this very moment, conjuring up some pretty hot daydreams. You always hurt the ones you love and all that.
Sheesh, you all sound like you've been sitting back smokin a bowl. No one in the GOP loves the Iraq war. No one is talking to or about the GOP nominee's because of the very bias you guys are complaining about. Hillary is mean spirited, (talk about politics of personal destruction,) Obama is a total lightweight from the get-go, and Edwards is a colosal hypocrit. As far as the baggage on the GOP side? I thought you guys loved that! These guys are just average Americans that have had things go wrong (and thats a subjective opinion anyway, isn't it) in their private lives and they're running for office. C'mon, lets leave their personal lives out of the race. Hmmmm, wait a minute. We're only suppose do that when its a democrat...
The media is running a campaign and people were running another campaign. I don't believe in the Media when it comes to the prediction that they do with it comes to politics. They always pick an candidate they build up.I think the reason why the media wants Hillary is because they want Republicans in the White House again. In case Hillary gets the nomination, she won't have any chance with the Republicans machine. They know everything about her and they know how to bash her. When it comes to Obama and Edward, the Republicans don't have any chance against them. If America is ready for anothere Republican in the white house, vote Hillary.

Thanks,
Getting really tired of all the Hillary haters.  Talk about sour grapes.  The whining, complaining and lying just never stop.

MSNBC doesn’t create the news – it simply reports it.  And all of the news points to one thing – a Hillary juggernaut.

Sierra – instead of lying about Hillary, why don’t you take a good, hard, honest look at your candidate and ask yourself (and him) why he is not performing better against her?
And some women aren't afraid of talking about Bill Clinton:

Goggle:

Bill Clinton
New York Sun
Knee pads

I've dreamed about Hillary......
talk about some serious nightmares......
So Mr. woman hater Sierra, who are you voting for? Ron Paul I presume...who of course doesn't have a chance in hell of winning. Such hatred for Hillary. Why so hateful, Sierra? As a man, why do you despise her so much. Whats up with you? Maybe something about a woman running our country makes you break out into a sweat. Your rants are boring, BOOORRRING!!
Sierra, what in the hell is wrong with you? Really. Or are you Jerry.
Steve Turner Cedar Falls Iowa / 'I'd also venture that some of her biggest detractors on here, are at this very moment, conjuring up some pretty hot daydreams. You always hurt the ones you love and all that.'

you are one sick puppy dude
I like my woman really tough and smart. Hillary is it.
###NEWS ALERT### CHECK OUT HILLARY'S WEB SITE. hillaryclinton.com
Sure this is a poll alright(LOL). Call the only ppl that you know(uknowwho's main supporters) and ask them questions. Out of the 399 or so ppl that were polled, how many of them were known staffers. Enuf w/ these silly soundbites. Iowa is a difficult place to poll. A more accurate way to poll is the attendance at the Harkin Steak-Fry a short while ago.
How come nobody mentions the republicans, like, what are their plans for the economy---

++++++++++

Republican plans are to keep it going the way it is.
From what I've been hearing, the Democrat plans are to pilfer it.
Yo Mark, THEY have been picking apart the Clintons for many years now. Where have you been?
The Obamanauts obviously can't comprehend articles well. First, George VA, it isn't titled "Hillary Surges".

Second, you may need to read the paragraph about being the front runner being bad news.
It's very evident, that most of these polls showing Hillary already coranated, are misleading. Case in Point on this blog from yesterday. 427 comment's ( mostly negative towards Hillary)posted concerning her TIT-4-tat with an intelligent voter from Iowa.Sure, there are gonna be ( Van's, Susan's, BB's etc, etc, etc)on all these boards, singing the praises of Hillary. That's their right!!!! However, it's also OUR right ( for now) to continue to point out that the media darling does'nt conform to ALL American's way of thinking. She is trying to use the same Anti-Constitution tactics, that have been used by GWB.FYI, i'm a die hard Democrat, & can see thru the fog of what awaits our great country, if the Electorate does'nt wake up. IF we want Real change from the last 7 years, Hillary is'nt the Answer we're looking for. " DELUSIONAL THINKING BY COMMON SENSE AMERICAN'S IS OVER"
G - I think you might be right... jerry and sierra.
Hillary supporters drink Koolaid.  If you haven't swallowed the poison do some research.  Find out about Clinton's new adviser Sandy Berger.  See how Mark Penn her strategist, advises and scripts to manipulate minds not just for Hillary but for among others Blackwater, Union Carbide, Texaco, Murdoch...   Just don't count on the main stream media to inform you.  When you find out the truth you will not support her... Period.
Rick kyjelly, just admit you are a woman hater and be done with it. You have NO common sense yourself, but don't know it yet. So Rick, who will you vote for if its Guiliani or Clinton? Tell the truth now... I know its difficult.
Just when Clinton looks like she may be shaking off her Democratic rivals, another extremely stupicd blunder. Of course this one may not matter much to Hillarity's supporters, because they're used to the endless scandal, criminal activity, and shady characters that have surrounded the Clinton's throughout their political careers. It seems the Clinton campaign is bringing on Sandy Burglar as an unpaid, "unofficial" advisor. Yes, the same Sandy Berger that was caught red-handed stuffing top secret documents related to the 9/11 terrorist attacks down his pants, in his pockets and even in his socks. Now, I don't want to hear how it was inadverdant, that Sandy was just being his old, sloppy self. Or how the documents were meaningless. BS. BS. BS. You don't stuff meaningless top secret documents in any place you can find to hide them if they are meaningless. No, you do that if the information in them could seriously damage someone's reputation or derail a political career, or proove complete ineptitude. Or something like that. Excusing this and saying we should all look the other way is inexcusable. It is grossly negligent. Berger should be investigated in depth and brought to trial. If the Clinton's had any knowledge of his CRIME, and no doubt good ol' Bill was behind it, then they should be brought upo on charges as well. Bush's justice department has decided to give Sandy a pass on this one. Why? Not because they don't believe a serious crime was commited. No. Because W himself told them to back off. He seems afraid that his administration would come under attack by the left for going on an unneccesary "witch hunt". He was afraid of the left, and many at the DOJ know it. They know Berger commited felonies. They know he could have been subject to a lengthy prison sentence. So why would Hillarity want tyo keep company with such people? Because birds of a feather...well, you know. If you want that type of leadership, then by all means, vote Clinton. I've had enough of them. No more Bush, no more Clinton. It's time to turn the page and get fresh leadership. If you want to go back in time, catch Art Bell reruns on AM radio.
Another article that shows why democratic party will loose if they elected Hillary Clinton. Democrats wake up, i can see de ja vu all over again.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&refer=columnist_hassett&sid=aXWIZU3DOyr4
GOOD GOD people.  How can two supposedly intelligent people watch the same newscasts (MSBC) and see two different things - probably because you are looking at it thru your preconceived ideas.

If you are a Hillary supporter - you think everyone is out to get her.  If you support one of her rivals then you think the media is giving her the crown already.

As far as I can tell no one has voted yet.  Let's wait and see.

BTW, the reason why all the media is saying Hillary has a commanding lead - is because DUH - she does!  Let's just hope that in January of '09 it is Hillary, Barrack, John E, Bill R etc. that we are watching being sworn in.
MSNBC IS ABOUT AS BALANCED AS FOX NEWS. THEY ARE SO UNBELIEVEABLY ENDORSING HILLARY CLINTON IT IS NOT EVEN FUNNY. THERE IS NEVER A CRITICAL HILLARY STORY. IT'S ALL ABOUT OVERSHADOWING OBAMA AND EDWARDS (INSTRUMENTS OF REAL CHANGE) AND KEEPING WASHINGTON THE WAY CHUCK TODD AND THE DEMOPUBLICANS LIKE CHUCK TODD (STENNY HOYER AND ALL OTHER CENTRIST GARBAGE) THINK IT SHOULD BE (RUN BY CORPORATE LOBBYISTS). I WAS BEGINNING TO WARM UP TO PROGRAMS ON TV SUCH AS KEITH OLBERMANS, BUT I VOW FROM THIS MOMENT FORWARD TO NEVER WATCH YOUR CHANNEL AGAIN. I GO STRAIGHT TO THIS COURSE OF ACTION, BECAUSE EXPECTING YOU TO BE HONEST ABOUT EDWARDS AND OBAMA WOULD BE TOO JOURNALISTIC, TOO HONORABLE, AND TOO ADMIRABLE FOR YOU TO ATTEMPT. NOW MSNBC SUCKS, HILLARY HAS ALWAYS SUCKED AS A CANDIDATE, AND CHUCK TODD SUCKS FOR DANGLING SO HARD ON HER CURTAINS (pun intended).
Very interesting comments....I am one of those women approaching 60; not 65.  I did NOT like Hillary or want Hillary anywhere near the Oval Office when she announced earlier this year.  I have watched almost every single show she is on, including the debates, and I am sorry if this offends anyone, but I have come away very impressed with how she has been handling herself.  As far the what she hasn't said...you cannot give your opponents all the ammunition this early in the game -- wait till the Republican Nominee is announced and that's when both of them will get into the issues more and it is also the time when it will get very ugly out there.

I agree with most of the comments on This article.  When Obama was leading we got none of the adjectives you use to describe Hilliary Clinton's new? lead.   I said it before and I say it again.  I think there is a bias against the Obama campaign and I think there is a perception out there that MSM seem to be giving Clinton all of accolades because of Bill Clinton being an ex Pres.   You guys never call her out on her none answers.  You just keep saying that she has won every debate.  She is just great, blah, blah!  When in actually she has not shown much of anything.  Her vote on the Lieberman/Kyl bill should freeze people in their steps.   I don't care what the intent was.   The voting public should see red.    I have one of the Democrats as my Senator.   I am already weighing the thought of not voting for them again.  They seem weak, just like some of you in the MSM and Punditry Corps when it comes to evaluating the Clinton campaign.   All I can say is I hope the Country really does not want a Bush Clinton Bush Clinton Dynasty!!  There maybe more people out there who feel that way then your polls show.
To all the Koolaid drinkers in the Clinton camp.  Why Sandy Berger? Why Mark Penn?  Why Howard Wolfson? Just look who is running her campaign and their associations.  Until then, Quiet.  We hear enough from the main stream media.
mk. Kiss Hillary goodnight for us, OK?
Bush Clinton dynasty thing was made up by the republicans to get people to vote against a democrat. It's put out there by the repub spin machine. Its so obvious and of course the mindless, naive persons pick it up and run with it.
The common cheap Washington Paper Hanging self serving ""LIAR""! These mondern day Washington paper Hangers have their personal agenda, which doesnt include you and I.

The out right liar wants to spend your money before they are even elected. Change policy only to support their hidden agenda.
