More on yesterday's debate

Posted: Wednesday, October 10, 2007 9:25 AM by Mark Murray

The big change between this GOP debate and the previous ones: the intensity of the spin between the top three campaigns. By our count:
-- Romney’s camp sent 17 debate related emails with all of their attack emails aimed at Giuliani.
-- Giuliani’s sent 14 debate related emails, half of them either attacking Romney or Thompson.
-- Thompson’s sent 15 emails, half of them either attacking Romney or Rudy.

“On a day when stock indexes hit record highs, Republican presidential candidates gathered here Tuesday for a group defense of low taxes and free markets and warned that Democrats, particularly Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, pose the greatest danger to the nation's future prosperity,” the Washington Post says.

The New York Times notes that Giuliani and Romney “tangled over taxes and government spending yesterday as the Republican presidential candidates debated in Michigan, highlighting the way in which their increasingly fierce confrontation is starting to dominate the race for their party’s nomination… Mr. Thompson often found himself a bystander as Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Romney attacked each another — or, just as frequently, went after Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, reflecting Republicans’ expectation of a general election contest against Mrs. Clinton, who is leading in polls of the Democratic candidates.”

The Wall Street Journal: “Of all the forums to date, this one featured the most direct confrontation yet between Messrs. Giuliani and Romney -- over their respective fiscal records, and over who best could take on Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.”

USA Today adds: “Taxes and spending were at the heart of the Romney-Giuliani argument over who is a true fiscal conservative. The two threw conflicting statistics at each other then faced off over the line-item veto, which lets governors cut specific items from a budget.”

CBN's Brody: "Fred Thompson may have been the buzz candidate coming in and he held up well but Mitt Romney was as sharp as he’s ever been tonight. It was Mitt Romney's night… Thompson’s performance was measured and pretty strong. He spoke faster which helped him appear more in control and presidential. He didn’t offer up a whole lot of specifics but he did answer questions directly and forcefully… Mitt Romney is truly a human power point presentation …and I say that in a very positive way."

AmSpec's Jennifer Rubin: "Romney's ‘ask the lawyers’ will perpetuate the sense he is not tough enough, confident enough in a post 9-11 world. And someone will have to explain why he thought the line item veto was a winner…  McCain was sober and steady but didn't shine... Huckabee suffered from the extra body on stage… Rudy is a prepared and confident debater. He won the dust up with Romney and his HillaryCare jibe reminded us (as if he would let a day go by without a reminder) there is no one better at Hillary bashing."

Paul got the biggest line of the night decking Romney on the Constitution after his ridiculous answer on Iran, gee... wonder why that isn't getting any mention?
While I was unable to watch the debate, it seems that the GOP has not learned from the Dem's own prior mistakes.  You can't run a campaign just bashing the opposing party's front-runner without any real message, policy, and plan to fix this very broken nation.  The Republicans will self-destruct once they nominate his Rudeness Rudey Rudilani who will make the biggest mistake by doing nothing but running a mudslinging campaign the likes of which the nation has not seen since, well, since he last ran for mayor, and the time before that was, well, when he first ran for mayor!  The rest of this country does not know [but they are getting a tast of it now] that Rudey is notoriously nasty when it comes to campaigning.
At least the GOP is having a serious debate.....

They are not afraid of going after Hillary, unlike some of the men that have been fixed by the democratic party......
You're all the same. All you media centers must be owned by the same people. Why do you want these guys to win? Your children will rebel against you. When it's our time (if you let us live until then), we will demolish everything you have set up. We will tear down this fake system. I just don't know what good or love comes out of rigging peoples minds.
Anyone who wants to claim they are a true fiscal conservative will have to point to statements over the past 6 years criticizing federal spending or urging the president to veto spending bills.
Was there a poll asking viewers who won?
I can't find reference to it.
who are Romneys lawyers?Aside from Ron Paul did anbody answer a question of how we are supposed to turn this country away from the briarpatch that Bush has pplopped us in the center of.How much more will we take from this worst government ever?Bush and cheney have taken this country down the tubes and we still believe in the good fairy.
Forrest Hawkins,

Here is the poll on MSNBC

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21209617

It's ALL about the Constitution.
Ron Paul gets it the others don't.
Sad that we have a media and "major candidates" that apparently don't think defending the Constitution is important or who have never read it...isn't there something in the Oath of office about swearing to defend the Constitution?

After two terms of bush and what he has done to this country, there is not a republican in this race that stands a chance of being elected. These debates are useless. Right wingers will see this next november.
Hillary will win hands down.
WHY BOTHER ITS HILLARY ALL THE WAY. SHE IS MY LADY 2008.
are you smarter that a 5th grader?
Poll Results

Ron Paul winns by a landslide (see Todd from Denver for link)
I just looked at a number of polls and it looks like Ron Paul won hands down... and he doesn't have a chance in hell of being the repub nominee...So, too bad for the party of George W. Bush. Karma..
--HMT-MI--

Romney has some great advisors!

J.Cofer Black: Vice Chairman BLACKWATER, Chairman THE BLACK GROUP. He was given the job by Tenet to get rid of al-Qaeda and Bin-Ladin, before/during 911--Great job Mr. Black!--He has been criticized for attempting to give to much control to "private security" firms. Romney wants 100,000 more troops...looks like we'll be paying a pretty penny for them...let's hear it for more debt to communist China while Romney makes his pretty penny in "investments." We've had way too much of this already with Cheney/Bush.

Other head advisor? Pete Hoekstra: Intelligence committee while FBI and CIA played keep-away before/during 911. His recent report condemned as "misleading" "incorrect" claiming Iran has weapons-grade uranium when IAEA reports it is only @ 3.5%--needds to be @ 90% to be weapons grade. Hoekstra requested the website giving directions to anyone looking to build a nuclear bomb. It was taken down after New York Times started asking questions. REAL GOOD ADVISOR, There, Mr. Romney!

WHAT IS romney's real agenda?
There is a wind of change in the air and it is taking the last of the oxygen from the Main Stream Media that think they have only sheeple viewing their low rated talk show hosts; that have little control over the peoples minds and try their spin of lies and sneaky spin to take away from the importance of the occasion.  The real life people come to the forefront no matter how hard you try to keep them in the dark and try to trip them up.  The hosts forget that truth and honesty are virtues and people of virtues raise above even great spin.  Cheers
No matter how you try to hide the truth you will only be fooling yourselves for truth is eternal.  Good overcomes evil and trickery.  Ron Paul came out the winner against your dihonest trickery and snubs.
Remember "Honesty is the best policy," and then maybe you can sway the minds if you admit there is a power greater than yourself, denial is not a River in Egypt.
Cheers,
thanks Todd---went to the poll site---wow---Paul skinned this pack ---think Hannity will brag about Rudy?I do
I don't know how anyone thinks Romney was the candidate who sounded the most intelligient, the most honest, and the best choice for our next president when it was clearly obvious that he doesn't even know the US constitution when it comes to waging war and bombings.  Apparently, if he is the winner of the debate, then it is not about the issues.  It is about good looks, who is taller, and who can be a bigger smart a__.  What have we come to in this country that his antics is what you have to do is win a presidential debate.  Ever seen Idiocracy, the movie?  That will be our fate if this is how we win debates and presidential elections.
I like Paul and feel he's the best prospect for president.  However, lets take a realistic look at this issue.  The superficial world of today has turned the selection of a candidate into a popularity contest; the smoothest, slickest, with an art for cutting opponents is the one who will get the nomination, likely.  Their playbook is out of Machiavelli's The Prince.

Before I digress too much, what I believe my point is, is that Ron Paul needs to embellish, to inject some human aspect into his answers, and not come off as some academic.  In many of his answers, he doesn't use all the time allowed him.  Like it or not politics IS a popularity contest with some measure of substance.
The Media, their owners, and who ever is working their "Strings" is very afraid of Ron Paul. He gets only the bare minimum of air time. He is the only candidate that has "The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth." The Light of Ron Paul's surgical insight must really hurt their those puppets'... "Ayes!"
There wasn't a candidate involved who truly showed any intelligence. Those who are against the Republican Party because of the war in Iraq aren't appreciative enough to realize that we are fighting in Iraq so that we ARE NOT fighting in OUR streets.
Hillary wins it hands down. Landslide, easy.
I thought Ron Paul was a little excitable in his answer, but it was dead on - the US Constitution has a few words to say about the country going to war!

(I'm just waiting to get the confirmation letter from the rigstrars of voters that I am now a registered Rupukagain, so I can vote for Ron Paul.)
Looks like Ron Paul has his internet crew out in full force. It is so many Paul plants on these blogs that it is a wonder the servers havent stalled. Ron Paul hasnt got a chance in hell of getting nominated, you can continue to flood blogs but this wont cut it. It is people like me out here in the general public that will not vote for him. WHY? Im not wasting my vote on a looser. He has no chance, most that will vote for him, will vote Democrat anyway. The Dems are building him up in hopes that he runs as an independent to cypher away votes from the Republicans but it aint gonna happen. You might win the congress but you will never win the presidency. If it wasnt for Ross Perot, you wouldnt have won with that 47% That Clinton won with. Just think, voters coming to the polls for the first time might have known nothing but republican their whole life.
Some thoughts about last night's debate from a bleeding heart liberal:

1. The closest thing yet to a real debate on the Republican side. I actually thought it was somewhat informative.
2. Tom Tancredo needs a medication adjustment and instructions on how to withdraw from the race.
3. Duncan Hunter insulted the intelligence of the voters he was trying to reach.
4. Ron Paul needs to work on a less frenzied delivery of an interesting message. Why is he a republican anyway?
5. John McCain appeared to be in control of his message and delivery.
6. Rudy Giuliani is shameless in his use of information and misinformation in pushing his candidacy.
7. Mike Huckabee and Sam Brownback were both dignified in their discussion of the issues. To be honest, they are probably the most decent candidates the republicans have.
8. Mitt Romney was awful. Rehearsed, smarmy, uninformed, and pathetic in his responses to attacks.
9. Fred Thompson surprised me with his ability to manage the debate process.

10. Moderators did a good job.

But what do I know, I voted for McGovern in '72, lol.

It's fun to consider what Ron Paul might actually be able to accomplish, by himself, were he to win.  He could get us out of Iraq. He could veto funding bills. Some would presumably be overridden.  What else would actually be possible?
"rigstrars of voters "  wow. Little Freudian slip, there.  And vote for him in th eprimaries, of course.
From the "Guiliani Road Show"....My Take:  Hhe is leading the GOP pack because he has started to take on Hillary.

NOTE TO HILLARY:  Girl...it's going to get UGLY before it gets better out there.
There is a saying all Chinese know. Fire cannot be contained by paper (or cardboard).

It seems that the Ron Paul fire is going to break loose from the cardboard container very soon.

The torch of liberty would light up the sky of America again.

I earnestly wait for this glorious day of People's Power as against the Media and Corporation Brute Force

It's interesting that when the thirty second clock ticked down that they let Giuliani speak for about twenty additional seconds. Hmmm. The people at the sound control board should flip that microphone switch immediately.
Let Giuliani run it's going to be nasty & dirty it's the American Way. Hillary Clinton is going to win, but it's going to be a knock-down dragged out fight. "Bring it on" Rudy to quote our lame duck President. Rommney looks like a slick car salesman, Thompson is old & ugly, McCain is toast, Hunter who? Ron Paul makes sense so he willn't survive and Kucinick sound better and better. There it's REPUBLICAN toss salad and they all lose bye bye.
But what do I know, I voted for McGovern in '72, lol.

So did RUDY!

Van
To all those who find it necessary to bash Ron Paul and his supporters, I would like to point out that they find the other Republican offerings just as repugnant as you do.  Just because he is seeking the Republican nomination does not mean he is of the current establishment.  So why not keep comments on the blog constructive, informative without snide or cutting remarks. I wish people who resort to such tactics would quit wasting perfectly good oxygen.
I don't think there was a winner because they clearly sit out to spend the time attacking each other to keep from addressing matters that really count. If each had been required to submit the in writing their detailed solution to ending the Iraq war, their medicare plan(wehter to stop paying part of the premium for seniors), the social security cuts or increases, education(stop forcing schools to preach abstinance to receive federal monies but instead tell kids them about condome and protect them from HIV/AIDS to save their lives and cut down medical cost).
My main question to everyone but especially Republicans is the following: How can you possibly consider a person like Giuliani, or even allow to run, for the highest position in this country, "President" when his has no "moral values"?  This "low life" moved his "hoar" into the mayor's residence while his wife was still in residence, and paraded his prostitute around the city as if she were the "first lady". Oh yes, she was and is a "lady", but not the first lady more like a lady of the evening(bought and paid for probably with city tax money). The low life would continue this type of activity once elected in full view of the entire world just to prove he is the "man in charge". The Republican party is known for their double standard. We've all seen time and time again how they will distorte the truth to suit themselves. They are known a world class liars, backstabbing, will talk out of both sides of their mouth with their hand on the Bible, will change  the rules, will minipulate the truth, lie for the current President, and is nothing wrong with setting aside the constitution. Remember their witch hunt of Bill Clinton for his so called involvement with the hoar Monica Lud-witch-ski? How the Republicans, even those with hoars of their one at home (Gingrich,Hall and others)wanted to far and feather Mr Clinton and then run him out of town.Remember the congressman from Louisana caught with frozen bribe money in his freezer during the New Orleans hurricaine?  How much more double standard can you get ?  Frankly  I'm sick and tired of it and am praying for an honest election, that isn't bought by friends/family and that doesn't require buying the Supreme Court. Is it too much to hope for? What a huge laugh the rest of the world must enjoy at our expense?
Communist China. What decade is Duncan Hunter from?
Pat's right - most of the rest of country only thinks "9/11 hero" when they think of Rudy.  New Yorkers think of that loud obnoxious bully who doesn't give a sh*t about race relations, stands by praising cops who rape black people with broomsticks, will say anything true or not (in the nastiest way possible) to bash opponents, and who on September 10, 2001 was on a fast track to IRRELEVANCY.

Should he win the nomination, the rest of the country will catch up fast on what a negative, cold, divisive nudnick this guy is.
"Im not wasting my vote on a looser."

"Loosers" are way too loose. I agree, and you're no "looser".

Ron Paul.
"Communist China. What decade is Duncan Hunter from? "

What makes you think it isn't this one?
those Guiliani haters out there are crazy!

Guiliani is the best choice hands down!

He is the only one who tells it like it is, he doesnt care what others think, he knows what is best for our Country and will stick by his guns to make it work!

He is the best candidate for our Country today!

We need someone who is a True Leader and will make us feel safe again!!!  Guiliani all the way!!!
So, the question to ask ourselves becomes:

Do we wish to live in a manufactured reality for the next 4 years, where America is constantly being threatened and where media elites constantly scare us into believing we have no other choice but to follow the "devils we know" -- or do we want to wake up and face reality as it IS in the real world?  Would we rather get our dose of reality from watching TV, or by opening the window, speaking to our neighbors, and lending an ear to the triumphant chants for Ron Paul, RON Paul, RON PAUL!

(Nothing good on TV anyway.)
Did you catch Giuliani's coded language?  "Man on the moon..."?
Looks for a good chance for ALL NON-VOTERS to get in their licks!  You can almost see, and hear, the strings being pulled on the supposed front runners.  The neocons are having their way!  If just 2 million non-voters were to send Ron Paul $20, he'd  have $40 million to do battle with the rest, and get the medias attention.  I think he's the ONLY one with a message to blow the Witch of Washington out of the air, and off her broomstick!
Debbie, is that "make us feel safe again" as opposed to "actually being safe again"? Can you qualify the generalities about Giuliani that were made in your post, because I myself think he is the most dangerous choice for our country.
First off I don't think this country needs talking heads to give their very slanted views of the candidates. We don't have our heads in the sand. We only need to look at the history of each candidate to see who would best serve this country. While it may be hard to decifer who is the best of the worst.
But come on Rudy!!!!!!!! you've got to be kidding.
The government of the USA is the Constitution, the supreme Law of the Land.  Therefore, any residents of the United States who are not Constitutionalists are not U.S. citizens and should move elsewhere.

Any citizen who, having sworn a binding oath of allegiance to the Constitution, takes that oath as a mere formality without believing in or intending to obey it, perjures that oath and literally forfeits, at that moment, the position for which the oath was taken.

Any public servant/government official/politician/etc. who scoffs at the Constitution and Constitutional adherence, and/or mocks those who do, or who abrogates, violates, subverts, ignores and/or promulgates unconstitutional and nonconstitutional policies, laws, and agendas not only perjure their oath and vacate their position, but diminish and weaken our supreme Law thus giving aid and comfort to our enemies, foreign and domestic.

Each of the current Presidential candidates, Republican and Democrat alike, have taken that oath of allegiance to the Constitution.  Only one candidate out of them all has been loyal to his oath of office and proposes Constitutional solutions, policies and law.  That, of course, is Cong. Ron Paul.

He manifested his patriotism once again last night when he countered Mr. Romney's statement about checking with lawyers before deciding to attack another nation.  Dr. Paul was the only champion of the Constitution on stage last night.  The rest, who have all spouted off unconstitutional and nonconstitutional policies, laws, and agendas, and have even violated, abrogated, subverted, ignored and scoffed at Constitutionality are, in reality, ineligible to run for or be a President of the United States.

Either the Constitution for the United States of America is still in force or it's been dissolved.  There's no in-between.  Ron Paul is the only presidential candidate who believes that the Constitution is still in force!
Well spoken, Mike from Rochester !!!!! And even though we are Ron supporters we don't attack the other commenters here on this blog like some do.
MSNBC's own "Rate the Candidates" shows Ron Paul at 64%, with the next highest rating at 17% (Huckabee) at the present time.  Yet you will not hear this mentioned on MSNBC TV or on any headlines. This blatant silence of the obvious facts proves a point to anyone willing to see the truth.

All these other posts for Ron Paul are right on... he is the only leader with integrity and the only true patriot. If you love all that is good and appreciated in America, you will get off your seat and tell everyone you know that Ron Paul is the only respectable candidate. If he is elected, no one is naive enough to think everything will instantly be rosy, but there will be hope for change. There will be hope for restoring the rights that most of us don't even know have been stripped from us. Check deadlines in your state for registering Republican and get yourself to the primaries.  For your children and grandchildren. And donate like it matters.
www.ronpaul2008.com
Pete Caloger in PA- Rudy has proven with 9/11 and other reasons to be the best candidate. I lived in New York during his term as Mayor and was amazed how involved he was with every situation, he was on the radio taking calls from callers with ideas to improve the city, he was shown on the news at all major or minor events, if there was something going on he was there, he never stopped working for NY, I have never seen such dedicated Mayor!  In your eyes you worry if he is elected, you have your right to your opinion.  There are other candidates I like but my #1 choice is Guliani.  I have followed him over the last 5+ years and hoped he would run for president one day.

Joe Bell Estero, Fl
But come on Rudy!!! ???

Obviously he is one of the leading candidates for a reason
