Romney loses NV straw poll

Posted: Sunday, October 14, 2007 2:26 PM by Chuck Todd

***UPDATE***Correction: An earlier version of this post had incorrect straw poll results. Romney was NOT fourth, but second. The post below is now correct.

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike

SPARKS, Nev. – Ron Paul won the GOP presidential straw poll conducted by organizers at the Conservative Leadership Conference held at the Nugget Casino this weekend “by a large margin,” according to an organizer.

Paul won with 33 percent, Romney came in second with 16 percent and Duncan Hunter was just behind with 15 percent. "Undecided" was fourth with 11 percent, and Thompson and Giuliani were next and ahead of the rest of the pack -- all in single digits. Raw numbers haven't been provided, but there were approximately 430 registrants at the opening of the conference.

Although many of the Republican presidential teams had surrogates representing them at the conference, Mitt Romney and Duncan Hunter were the only candidates to speak at the conference, and the victor himself was not there.

Libertarian sentiment dominated the conference, and a number of attendees expressed disappointment with the Republican Party for not catering to many of their views. Several speakers explained that they were looking to move on, echoing much of the discontent that came out of the meeting of the Council for National Policy in Salt Lake City late last month.

In fact, American Target Advertising Chairman Richard Viguerie, who said he was part of the strategic meetings in Salt Lake City, said Thursday night that even though he has agreed not to support Giuliani, Thompson or McCain, he’s still not close to declaring support for Romney or any other lower tier candidates because they are still actively and seriously courting conservatives. “Why would we stop the flow of flowers and candy?” he said.

Almost on cue, Romney said during his speech the next day to the group, “I’m from the Republican wing of the Republican Party,” eliciting a negative response from some rival campaigns and the Democratic National Committee. The DNC jumped and noted that he stole Chairman Howard Dean’s line from the previous election when he told voters he was “from the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party” before losing to John Kerry.

Out of the malaise over the conference came several questions targeted to Romney urging him to explain why he could be the candidate who would change the party’s direction. In particular, vastright founder Joseph Bentzel, whose start-up Web company with slogan “Powering Digital Conspiracy” has yet to launch, asked Romney at a town hall how the party can be re-brand, reform, refocus and re-launch after what he called is a phase of “pre-emptive defeatism” for the GOP. Romney gave a four-part answer, starting with his pitch, “Well, I think it helps to have a new face.”

Romney went on to sound another theme of his: optimism. He called the Democrats pessimists and said his optimism could go a long way for the Republicans, and he moved onto a point similar to his first, that the country ought to be led by someone who hasn’t spent an entire lifetime in politics. And he ended with a line that played well before the crowd of Reaganites, implying that his energy and passion could echo that of Ronald Reagan’s.

Finally.

Thank you MSNBC for reporting that Ron Paul has won yet ANOTHER straw poll among Republican voters.

Perhaps the mainstream media is finally starting to get it.

Funny how Paul, McCain and Hunter all do better than Romney in this poll, yet all three are nothing more than a side note, and instead concentrate on nothing but  Romney in it for the most part. If I didnt know better, I would be inclined to think the writer of this piece was secretly in love with Mitt Romney. How about concentrating on the ones that did well in the poll. What a novel idea that would be.
I love it! Ron Paul WINS and they only talk about Romney. This election is like the build up to the Iraqi invasion, the mainstream media spin is out of control. They no longer report the "news", just their world view. These people are not journalists, they're commentatos. They're nothing but ego with no substance ... sad really, but hopefully they're shooting themselves in the foot.
Romney and others must begin focusing on bringing Republicanism back to the Constitution.
See Ron Paul - No Laughing Matter

Libertarians are right in saying the government should have nothing to say in telling people how to run their business. Romney needs to examine honestly Ron Paul's success.
This shows great promise for a real change in the way our government works if Ron Paul continues to get this kind of support.
No surprise here -- Ron Paul has been winning straw polls all over the country.
::cough

Who won?

And you say he wasn't even there?

Are you sure this is really a Mitt Romney story?  Clue: it certainly isn't a Rudy Giuliani story.
So the winning candidate is virtually ignored while the article spends all its time talking about someone else?  Is this a journalistic twilight zone or something?
Wow.  Ron Paul wasn't even there and ran away with the straw poll victory.  Romney and Hunter were there and they could only mangae 15%?
I think there should have been more in the article discussing the WINNER of the straw poll, Ron Paul.  This article is about Mitt Romney, who didn't even place in the top three in the poll.  Lame.
Ron Paul won the poll.  Why not more depth on the reasons Paul is winning these polls?  Covering Romney's empty words is not newsworthy.
It appears that Willard "Mitt" Romney would have improved his odds by staying away. Meanwhile, Ron Paul just finished a hugely successful campaign trip to New York City, raising more than $50,000 (by my estimate)in one evening, Friday. The next day, more than a thousand well-wishers showed up to cheer Dr. Paul prior to a luncheon speaking engagement in Midtown.
Ron Paul is the only candidate running in this race that can possibly lead our country in the direction we need to go. His voting record proves his consistency in standing on his beliefs.  I cannot say that about the other candidates.
I saw Ron Paul speak this weekend at a rally in New York City. To use the term "electrifying" to describe Dr.Paul's brief but impassioned speech on the balcony of the Grand Central Station would be an understatement. It literally sent chills down my spine to feel that I was a part of history that day. The media are slowly starting to realize that Ron Paul and his supporters are not just on the Internet. I would love to see Hillary or Giuliani do this:

(Actually, I wouldn't...)
now look here boys, all of you still pay a lot of money when i show up i made it possible for pat tillman's mother never to find out the truth about her son's death ann and i have it all figured out just play dumb and i will lead you to
Why do you have such an article that is practically exclusively about Romney (seven mentions by name) when he was "in the lower numbers", even after appearing in person. Media outlets like yourselves lose credibility when you publish an article about the loser in the lower numbers than about the winner of the straw poll.

Folks... Ron Paul just keeps winning these Straw polls... please go to ronpaul2008.com 0r dailypaul.com  Time to take back our Government..Time to restore the constitution!  RON PAUL IN 08!
At what point does Ron Paul get a headline for winning?
Re-brand, re-form, re-focus, and re-launch? Revolting and re-revolting. Re-tire Re-publicans, re-tire.  America doesn't need a re-peat of this re-grettable re-ality we find ourselves in.  Do you re-ally think we want to re-live the last few years? This Country would not be re-pairable.
Ron Paul is the only declared candidate that semes to believes in smaller federal government. Is that what true "Reaganite" republicans are looking for? I'd like to hear about his stand on all the issues - and why so many people are voting for him despite what little coverage he receives from the media
People if you are considering voting for McCain, Romney, Guiliani, Thompson, Hillary, or Edwards think twice before casting that vote or be prepared to answer your children a decade from now:

"Why you chose to vote for leaders whose policies resulted in economic slavery, and unending war that they have to now fight?"

"Why you did not set aside blind party ideology to vote for FREEDOM and CONSTITUTION?"

"What moral right did you have to pass huge debt, debased currency, high inflation for them to suffer?"

Nevadans made the right choice - RON PAUL..
The headline should say, "  Paul wins Nevada straw poll despite Romeny appearing in person. When is the media going to get it? Americans are sick of the BS. We are going to register as Republicans in order to shake up the status quoe and vote for Dr. Paul.
I'm a Dr. Ron Paul supporter..

I think the fact that Romney & others ATTENDED this event and Dr. Paul who was not in attendance won it is news worthy and demonstrates a growing base of support in the Republican Party for Dr. Ron Paul's views.

Here Here!!
A harbinger of what's to come for the Republican party in the West and Mid-West... just as I've been predicting.
QUESTION: how is it that Ron Paul placed first, McCain second, Hunter third, and Erin McPike can only write about about what Romney has said? Who cares about the opinions of a loser?  Personally, I want to hear about the views of a person who can win without even appearing.  Now that's interesting.
Shouldn't it be headlined, "Despite Not Being There in Person, Ron Paul Wins NV Straw Poll"?
DESPITE SHOWING UP IN PERSON, ROMNEY LOSES NEV. STRAW POLL

you cats really hate ron paul, this article should have been titled

RON PAUL WINS NEVADA STRAW POLL BY A LAND SLIDE

and despite your constant labeling of mr. paul as a 'libertarian' in your feeble attempt to alienate him from the republican party, if you would bother looking at the true definition of conservative you would find mr. paul fits into that category best, which I am quite sure you are aware of, do any of the other republicans? Your not fooling anyone but yourself
it is also quite pathetic you guys did not see fit to mention mr. pauls victory  on your Sunday political get together
hang in there though, you may get Hillary and rudy nominated yet, then again you may not
You just couldn't resist not putting Ron Paul's name in the title of the article even though he was the winner.
To Mitt Romney: http://you.justgotowned.com/

To MSNBC: Nice biased headline, losers.
Thanks for the article, but why so much emphasis on Romney?  His name is mentioned a total of nine times in the article even though he lost.

In fact, the title doesn't even include the "victor's" name as you put it, Ron Paul, who was mentioned only twice.

Wow.  The Ron Paul nuts must be elated; and Duncan "Who's That" Hunter with a third is almost as surprising.  Its too bad that Nevada doesn't equate to two squirts of piss in the grande schema of things.

Will someone please tell the good folk of Nevada to leave the Crazy Horse Saloon and realize that its either Rudy or Mitt for the GOP.
The idea that a Romney and McCain were the story here is so disappointing. The true head line is "Ron Paul take the lead in Straw poll despite appearances by other,so called, top tier candidates."
Lets report what happened not what didn't.
The Ron Paul Revolution is rolling through your town!  Either hop on board, or get the hell out of the way!
I wonder why no one voted for Mr.Romney in Nevada's Straw Poll. It couldnt be that he wants his attorneys making all the tough Presidental decisions for him instead of working with congress. Guess We the People dont need a congress to represent us, we just need an oval office full of attorneys telling the figurehead president what to do.
Ron Paul also won another straw poll in Alabama this weekend. If he is winning all of these Republican straw polls, one has to wonder what will happen in the primaries.
What on earth.  Dr. Paul won the event, Romney was barely an "also ran" and you spend time talking about Romney's policies.
RON PAUL ROCKS!!!

Ron Paul defeats Romney, and your headline doesn't mention him at all? Who talks about the second place winner and not the first?
Kinda strange that the entire article is about Romney when Ron Paul is the one who actually won the straw poll.  I want a President who actually respects the Constitution and truly favors limited government, personal and economic freedom, and the best person for that right now is Ron Paul.
This straw poll looks like a joke.  I'm still very impressed with Romney, and as of right now, he's the candidate I'm going to support.
Maybe it's time to give Paul equal coverage time. The only reason why he's behind in the polls is that nobody covers him. If he got more name exposrue he'd win the nomination hands down.
Flip Flop Mitt. Be ready to defend that, it won't be easy.
Are you going to post peoples comments here?
What happened to the comments?  I left one hours ago.
Ron Paul won the poll but is talked about the least in the article?
How 'bout a title more like, "Ron Paul Wins Nevada With Romney Upset!"  Why do you go on to talk about Romney and not about Ron Paul who bloody won the thing!
Someone call Allen Wastler and tell him that Ron Paul's campaign hacked the straw poll.
OK, Congratulations to all of Pauls' supporters!
But why the article is focusing so much on the guy who lost the poll instead of covering the winner? Kinda weird IMO.

Main Stream Media You wont be able to hide our revolution for long!!!

RON PAUL WILL WIN BY A LAND SLIDE IN THE PRIMARIES!!!

nice headline by the way, miss the real story much?
