Obama takes yet another shot At Clinton

Posted: Sunday, October 14, 2007 2:34 PM by Chuck Todd

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan and Carrie Dann
DES MOINES, IA -- Multi-candidate events are always difficult to navigate, especially when rival campaigns might have to share a ballroom after sniping at each other for the past week.

At last night's banquet for Sisters on Target  – a black women's political activism group in central Iowa – the two leading contenders for the Democratic nomination managed to avoid sharing the stage, thanks to Hillary Clinton's early exit after the sorbet was served and Barack Obama's arrival well afterwards.

But the candidate who might have been the most short-changed by their delicate dance moves was Sen. Joe Biden, who was introduced just as Obama was entering the room.   Biden, who spoke after Republican John Cox, had his introduction drowned out as guests peered behind them to see Obama's entrance.

The senator from Delaware was good-natured about the last-minute shift of limelight.  He waited until Obama had finished shaking handso before launching into a forceful speech on the rights of African-American prisoners.   Characteristically a long-winded speaker, Biden even offered to give up some of his allotted time to his colleague.

"I'm not going to make that poor guy hold that red sign up," he joked, pointing to the organizer who subtly held a piece of red construction paper aloft when speakers' time was running short.   "Hillary made him hold it up for 12 minutes …  I'm going to guess Barack will make it a minute or two too."

"You can have the extra time beyond the time that I have," he added.

Biden earned a sympathetic laugh from the crowd, but it was tough to compete with the two political supernovas, who were both received with deafening cheers and a flurry of flashbulbs.

In her remarks, Clinton reiterated that she's not running because she's a woman, but she lauded the women in the room for their contribution to their communities. "If you want something done," she said, "ask a busy woman to do it."

Obama was applauded for his acknowledgement  - in front of a black audience – of the role of race in his campaign.   "'I'm not sure that America is ready for a African-American president.'  I get that sometimes," he told the crowd.

"I'm not in it for a symbolic presence," he added. "We've done that before."

Obama, the last presidential candidate to take the stage, also couldn't resist a parting shot at the competition.   "I'm not going to win just by being the most calculating politician in this race," he said.

Chris, from a source who was there.  The deafing cheers were for Obama not Clinton.  And I saw you on Tim Russert show last night and you said it's not the responsiblity of the reporters to fact check what the canidates are saying- it's up to the canidates.  So tell me, when did this happen that the media no longer investigates politicans statements but just are the recorders of some of it and put their little spin on it and report it as news.  Like your headline Obama gets snippy with Clinton.  Obama is so cool he is never ruffled on the campaign trail asking if people are plants.  He just calls it like he sees it.  The problem is that the Washington media aren't reporting on the mood of the country accurately.  Americans see that changing parties doesn't do much in DC.  Democrats in control have not done anything on getting out of Iraqi and are trying to play the Republican game but are losing- the Petereous Report, Schip (which I support), AG scandal, wiretapping, Armenian special interest and the flap over Turkey.  The system is broken the political game is corrupted and Americans needs are forgotten about. Watch and see more incumbents loose their seats in the next election.
Vote Obama

He can unite our nation.
Obama's going to lock it down in Iowa, in New Hampshire, and then in South Carolina. The mainstream media, and those who blindly follow their lead, will be shamed and surprised -- but hopefully, happily surprised.
A jab so subtle I needed the reporter to point it out to me.
Obama is really consumed with sour grapes, he knows he cannot beat HILLRY CLINTON!
CLINTON for PRESIDENT 2008
Good job Obama. Its about time. You've definitely got my vote, IN NEW YORK.
I am really sick and tired of Hillary being stuffed down the throats of Americans as their next choice for president!  I wouldn't vote for her if you paid me.  She's a total repulicrat, stay the course, not a change in sight candidate.  We need to bring our troops home and implement universal health care, talk to the folks in the Middle East and Korea and Europe, repeal the so-called Fair Trade Acts and get the dollar back to being strong.  She is NOT the person to do so.  So, please, First Read, I'm not that dumb nor that gullible.  I think it is highly unfair to take advantage of less-informed people by feeding some sort of emotional need with regard to Hillary.  She is a LOUSY choice for president.  You don't have to keep promoting her.  Try promoting someone who is NOT big on the numbers but is very big on the ideas like Kucinich.
Obama is someone who tends to stay long after an event to talk with voters and of course, the people who stopped him along the way, as well. So, his late entrance was normal.  However, Hillary rushing off right after speaking shows that Obama is someone who really can get under her skin still.  Hmmm.  maybe something we don't know in those polls????
Possibly did not want to be asked about those untraceable emails going around that revives the 'muslim' false charge about him????
Possibly knowing Obama would be the star of the program and her highness could not bear to see that she is not one???
Biden, I feel was gracious as always.
yeah, Hillary,"If you want something done ask a busy woman to do it". Except, of course, baking cookies for the kids. Never had time for that, didja?
Hillary Clinton is calculating, and Joe Biden was good natured. However I would like to see more of the candidates actually walking the walk when it comes to change.

Leadership is voluntarily announcing your earmarks as Barack Obama did. Hillary Clinton has refused to stand up for transparency. Just read a recent Bloomberg article "Hillary Clinton Reigns as Queen of Federal Pork."

Guys,
We are being duped by these polls. I cannot believe how shameful these people are. A friend of mine from California called me very upset. Acall was placed to his house and this was the conversation:

Are you over 18 and eligible to vote? Answer..Yes
Are you leaning democrat or republican? Answer..Democrat
Are you likely to vote in 2008? Answer..Yes
Now, I am going to list the democratic candidates and then tell me whom you will vote for.
Ok..Will you vote for Hillary..Answer… No!
Thank you sir. This concludes our survey.
My friend asks;…what about Barack Obama? The surveyor answers back….Thanks for your time Sir! Click.

So these are the poll qusetions? This is a perfect way of getting 40% and over from these guys. There is definitely a campaign that is pulling the strings. How is Obama supposed to show up in the polls if we are not allowed to get him as an option to vote for? I tell you guys…I am seething and I cannot wait for IA. URRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!

You don't even need to get into the Vince Foster conspiracy theories to find things that should be troublesome regarding Hillary Clinton, e.g. the White House travel office firings, Hillary's unlikely commodities investment prowess, FBI file-gate, the Rose law firm billing records, the pardon of Marc Rich and others (especially the Hugh Rodham tie-ins), the Peter F. Paul vs. HRC election fraud case, etc. etc. etc.

Call it right wing conspiracy if you want, but there is a lot of stuff out there that, but for the lack of anyone being able to find a smoking gun, has just sort of been forgotten. Even if a lot of or any of it isn't criminal, it illustrates the Clinton approach to politics and we need to get away from that.

Contrast that with Barack Obama:

“…Of all the major presidential candidates who have come to the paper over the years, Obama won the prize for candor and directness. Candidates are dodgers and shifters, expert at saying what they want to say rather than answering the questions you ask. Not Obama…”

Vote Obama!!!
Biden at least has the experience to be President. Obama does not and this Country has paid an awful price for electing somone who is void of any foreign relations experience. I often wonder where we would be as a country had Al Gore been awarded the Presidency. One thing for sure, we would not be in this quackmire in Iraq. Obama now is too soon. Let him get re-elected first to prove the first time was no fluke or serve four or eight years as the VP. By that time he should have some grey in his hair and make a fine President.
What is the difference between Hillary Clinton's Middle East policy and George Bush' Middle East policy ?

They both wanted to attack Iran.
They both want to attack Iran.
They both want to leave American troops in Iraq.

Is there a difference between Bush and Clinton ?
The only ones who short change Biden are the Media who fail to point out his superior qualifications to the electorate. Yes, you included Chuck Todd.
ALL SAID AND DONE, SENATOR CLINTON IS THE RIGHT AND ONLY PERSON FOR THE WHITE HOUSE IN 2009 . NO QUESTIONS ABOUT IT.
Who cares? Shes got the nomination locked up. I can see him as a future president, like maybe after Hillarys term is up.
Nothing but Class
Seems like Obama is spinning his wheels. He's not ready for prime time yet. Maybe later...do like him though.
When you're seriously behind you have to throw out desperation shots, and that's what Obama is doing.
It's too bad, because he looked like a statesman until he started losing his cool.
He should back off before he ruins any chance he may have in future Presidential elections. It's time for him to tone down the rhetoric for the good of the party and most of all, for the good of the country.
I am wondering if and when MSNBC is going to have David Schuster do a piece on HillBill's flip-flops or are we going to have to wait for the repugs to do it. Your coverage of Sen. Obama has been racist, dis-respectful, disdaining and uninformed beyond belief. It takes skill or unbelieveable ignorance to mis-represent his stands and statements to such a degree.

I can only hope we can expect some improvement soon.
What is so "desperate" about pointing out DIFFERENCES between you and your opponents?  I just don't get it.  People claim Obama has no substance and when he takes stands and points out difference between himself and Hillary it's an attack.  Politics is a debate of ideas and belief. Obama has clear positions and points out the difference between himself and others. Hillary calls people "naive" and adopts their ideas as her own.  Obama caught Hillary hand in the cookie jar and she can't spin this.  You can't constantly flip-flop on issues and expect not to be called for it.  Obama also has a energy plan for the US. I haven't seen any other front-runner present an energy plan.  He was the first in the field to show his additions to bills that we now call "pork-barrel" spending; Hillary and Biden hasn't did that.  He is in front on issues while Hillary flip-flops, takes different stances on a week-to-week basis.  He has integrity, and leadership while others are "reading polls" to decide on where they stand.  He is the Democrats best candidate and overt/covert racism by the media may destroy him.

April – Maybe Hillary didn’t bake cookies but she sure managed (by all accounts) to raise a poised and well – adjusted daughter who caused her no embarrassment during 8 years in the White House. Unlike the drunken Bush twins, the dysfunctional Reagan brood and the Giuliani kids who want nothing to do with their own father.
Your headline on this piece, "Obama Takes Shot at Clinton" is another example of slanted reporting. Candidates run on their records - it is fair game for an opponent to point out the inconsistencies and flip-flopping of their voting. This is not "taking a shot" or "running a campaign on hope"; this is politics. The poster who mentioned it being the job of the media to dig out the facts, not the candidates, is correct. Pullitzer prizes are won by investigative journalists. This is their job. This is your job. The media also should point out what actually happened with Obama's not being there for the Iran vote. Why did Harry Reid table the vote for a few days and then call it for the next day, when Senator Obama was already in New Hampshire. I think this is worth mentioning by the mainstream media
It's always good to read the Brits media, they're the best. US media is so bias. I stopped reading them long ago. frankly visit BBC and Sky news and other Brits media you will get the facts.
Its become quite clear that Barack, because of the polls, has to exploit honesty and sincerity as a means to gain momentum.  Now that he realizes Clinton gained more money in the third quarter,  he has to become an attack dog by mentioning her inconsistencies and deceptions.  The politics of truth indicate some kind of desperation in the Obama camp. Hillary is riding on on her wave of cow dung.  She appears strong as she feeds the people along the way.
CALCULATING is mild, she's dishonest,devious....she's lil bush! obama 08!
Johnnyraygun,

What?  Your post makes no sense to me. "Exploit honesty and sincerity"?  You do realize that he has more money overall?  And yes, she is leading, well ahead, in all the polls.
I think this bias reporting in the media is getting so bad that it is going to start having the opposite effect. People are not as stupid as the media takes us to be . When they leave thing out of there reporting that is common knowldge to most people ,even the less educated people start to figure out whats going on . And also these ridiculas polls that they love to bring up every minute like its law or  there known to be acurate(dean for one) . Especial when everywhere obama gos he draws twice the crowd as clinton even in her own senate state . some people are in for a big surprise .
OBAMA/EDWARSD '08.
Obama can bring this country together.  This is what we need.  No more polarizing figures who will divide and keep dividing this country.

WHAT WE NEED IS CHANGE, AND OBAMA IS THE MAN TO DO IT!! HE HAS STOOD BEHIND ALL THAT HE HAS STATED, HE DOES NOT FLIP FLOP JUST TO GET THE SIDES OF THE AUDIENCE. BARACK DEMOSTRATES HIS INTELLIGENCE & JUDGMENT BY STATING THE OBVIOUS.

Hillary Clinton, 15 years of dishonesty, scandals and divisiveness.

Don't nominate someone that doesn't have a chance in the general election.
END 15 YEARS OF DARKNESS AND CORRUPTION
NO MORE BUSHS/CLINTONS................End This War!!
NO MORE REPUBLICANS/CLINTONS..........End This War!!

Best Ticket: OBAMA/EDWARDS '08

OBAMA/EDWARDS '08

NO MORE BUSHS/CLINTONS................End This War!!
NO MORE REPUBLICANS/CLINTONS..........End This War!!

OBAMA/EDWARDS '08

lET SEE IF THIS GET POSTED!!
Anthony's comments from Dallas, TX above are very telling; the polls are spin. I speak with Democratic and Independent voters everyday in New Hampshire. Most do not like Hillary and most do like Barack. I think the polls are also misleading because most people have not yet made up their minds. If voters chose on quality of experience, judgment, intelligence and ability to empathize, they will vote for Barack Obama for President.
Diane - It's pretty rude to show up late, in the middle of someone else's speech, and disrupt everything.  It's rude to leave early as well, but I don't think Hillary's rudeness excuses Obama's rudeness.  He should have offered to yield some of his speech time to Biden, not the other way around.
April - By all accounts, Hillary was (and still is) a very devoted mother.  I'd bet she baked some cookies in her day.  Even if she didn't, however, the fact that she raised a daughter who has managed to become a bright and scandal-free woman, despite being thrust into the public spotlight and constantly confronted with the attacks on her parents' credibility and character.  My mother rarely baked cookies for me, either, but that doesn't mean she didn't love me and support me every step of the way.
Johnnyraygun says "he has to become an attack dog by mentioning her inconsistencies and deceptions"

You can't miss them!  Bravo to Obama and Edwards for pointing them out, since the MSM certainly won't!  Oh and thanks, Johnny, for bringing it - deceptions - up!
THis article leads about "yet another jab' from Obama.

GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

How misleading, and blown out of proportion.

HOW ABOUT GETTING A REAL JOURNALIST, MSNBC???

...instead of someone's who is grasping at straws and whose political bias shows through even on the headline?
An Obama/Biden or Biden/Obama ticket would be unstoppable.
Chuck Todd is doing his best to help Clinton.  Every chance he can get he says that Obama is "stealing" material from others.  The repeated use of this word by Todd and the Clinton camp belies an attempt to poison the public's impression of Obama's character and past.
What next?  It's as if Barack wants to take advantage of Clinton's deception.  It must be frustrating for the Obamanites who seem to count so much on real information.
Clinton's PR firms run a media empire, loyal to lobbyists.  She free to say, spin and pander all she wants?  Baby bonds yepee.  "It depends what you mean by "participate" in Michigan."  "When I said "I" I was referring to ..."  "That's a hypothetical..."  "You are naive..." ON andON
So what if Harry Reid sneaks in the Kyl/Lieberman amendment making it unreasonable for Barack Obama to be there.  Reid's son is a staff member on Clinton's campaign.  Talk about Cronyism, Reid has nothing on Hillary.  That whole think was really fishy.  Then the spin.  My oh my.
