Border fence: Made in China?

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
Leading members of the Congressional Steel Caucus have revealed that Chinese-made pipe and tube are being used to construct the congressionally mandated fence along the border with Mexico. They are demanding that something be done to ensure that American made products are used instead.

"It is outrageous, offensive, and unacceptable," says Rep. Jason Altmire (D-western PA). "If they are going to build this with steel it should be U.S. steel. No exceptions," said Rep. Phil English (R-western PA), who added that there are firms in his district that would love to supply materials for building the fence. English calls the barrier a "Great Wall of China."

The assembled members displayed a photograph of the fence -- only a small portion of which has been completed to date -- with piping that is clearly marked, "China." They say it was given to them by union activists, and that after seeing it, the members confirmed with the Department of Homeland Security that the government was indeed using Chinese-made pipe and tube. Not only that, DHS waived the "buy American" requirement written into the law that authorized construction.

It's not a matter of price, they say, but of national and economic security -- and also of quality. "They don't make safe toys," says Rep. Pete Visclosky (D-IN). "We ought to have a quality fence." Visclosky has asked DHS Secretary Chertoff to come to Congress and testify on the issue.

Presidential hopeful and critic of China Rep. Duncan Hunter was also on hand. He pointed out that of the 854 miles of barriers authorized by Congress a year ago, only five miles of double fencing and 70 miles of single fencing have so far been constructed.

This administration has the biggest traitors to the Unitde States. Have Homeland Security investigate ahh..... never mind.
This story about imported Steel, reminds me a famous story in American history.  When the US had to build the transcontinental railroad, the proposals went out to bid, and the lowest cost proposal came from firms' from England(Great Britain).  The President at that time, compared the proposal from the American firms, and discussed the issue of who to chose with the Secretary of Transportation.
The President said "If we buy the steel from England, we will get the best price, and save 20% of the money, according to you (Secretary of Transportation).
But, after we pay the money, all that money will go to England, and "be gone" from America.
If we choose the American firms, we will pay 20% more, but, all that money will stay in America. We will employ American workers, who will spend that money in America, and can support their families, and build up our communties. We also will build up the American Steel Industry.  When we are done, we will have brand new steel mills, trained workers, and all of the money will still be here in the USA.  That was the kind of "wisdom" and long-term thinking, we used to have in our political leadership.

I wish I could tell you the exact name of the President, but, I have forgot that detail of my history studies, and don't want to just guess at this time.

But, the facts are, this actually happened in American history, and was a key reason why we had a steel industry that later helped the USA become a great industrialized country.  A country with a steel industry, that was later called upon to build the weapons to win World War I, and later, World War II.

I wish more of our Government could understand the "wisdom" of helping key industries, like steel, computing science, industrial chemicals, and others that have long-term national security implications, located, and producing products, in the USA, by USA workers.  The "cost" is not just the "price", but also the "other benefits" or "externialities" to use an Economics phrase.

Unfortunately, it is very hard to find companies today, that actually consider themselves to be "USA" companies.  With the "Internationalization" of the corporate world, even the best intentions of requesting that the Steel be "made in America", will be fought against, in Congress, with Lobbying, be firms that "used" to be American, but, are now owned by some "multi-county" corporate entity that does not think, it owes any responsibilty to the USA as a country.  Just to the mythical "Stockholders".....IT's SAD....but...TRUE.
China or America I don't care just put it up.  I'm tired of these illegals sucking the blood out of this country.
Chinese fence material, I'm glad some one in this world is working with steel too bad it ain't americans. Rebums love the global economy, no more well paid union workers who buy houses and boats and fridges and washers and dryers and toys and dog food and toothpaste and shampoo and drugs and food. We will get all of these things from China when the rebums get another corporate clone to run our country like a business, The Corporate States of America, SOUNDS GREAT!
What would Sam Walton think of this?
" Not only that, DHS waived the "buy American" requirement written into the law that authorized construction."

This is the Bush Administration. They don't need "no steenking laws".
"A real citizen" should be ashamed of yourself... your own blood is made from that of immigrants.  Yeah, we need to do something to protect our borders, but we all know that a bits-and-pieces fence isn't gonna cut it.  And the fact that it's coming from China is just another example of the short-sightedness of this administration.

You got to be kidding me.

"..Phil English (R-western PA)". No wonder. He's just drumming up business for Pittsburgh and the steel mills."

If you guys were CHEAPER and BETTER than other countries then by all means, Yes, use U.S. Steel.

My industry is in transition with outsourcing and we're dealing with it fine.

I don't want my taxes going to crybaby protectionist and lazy unionists subsidies.

If you can't take the global competition get out of the kitchen.
Don't you just love the irony ?
probably has lead paint on it as well..
Who cares who  builds  it
Build the fence  already  !!!!!!
Sounds pretty consistent with the way so many jobs have been outsourced.  I agree with both of the representatives quoted.  If the fence is to be built, it must be built with American materials by American firms.
Wasn't long ago the AFL-CIO the ACLU teamed up to keep the feds from go after illegal's.

Just give it up America the party is over. Everyone from the ground up is corrupt, and only worried about their own filthy little piece of the pie. Sell your self respect to the highest bidder, and watch the swirl.
For as much as I disagree with the general public in that I think this fence is a waste of time and money, if it is going to be built it should be built with American Made Products and not from resources coming from outside of the United States. For anyone who cares this contract DHS authorized for construction material from China was illegal as the bill that authorized building the fence clearly states as mentioned in the article above that the fencing material be provided by US Contractors. Wonder how many other ways the govt./DHS can screw us over.
God damn Chinese again.
Mr. Bush, please tear down this fence!
Ummm...wonder what Homeland Security is doing with the money they are saving by not using American steel and not, for that matter, putting the fence up...

There was a story in the local Charleston, WV newspaper today about a steel plant in Weirton, WV closing down more of its operations (if not all) and a little over 200 people are losing their jobs. The storty stated the plant used to employ over 13,000 people, and over time and after being bought twice in 18 months, has less than 1,300. Arcelor Mittal bought the plant and is shutting it down piece by piece. If the federal government can't give contracts to companies with mills in the states, and write the contracts so that the products are made in the states, then all of their talk about trade deficits, saving the steel industry, and fair trade is a bunch of ****.
This escapade reminds me of the scrap steel deal with Japan just prior to the bombing of Pearl Habor. I am a Marine who was at one time stationed on Ford Island which right in the middle of the habor. The doors on the plane hangors don't close because of damage done by the bombs of the steel we sold them too make.
A person would like believe that the old addage that Hindsight is always 20/20! However even if it is 20/20, we continually forfiet our national welfare and safety by placing the contitutional protections of our citizenry in the wrong hands time and time again. Will man ever learn from his past mistakes? I highly doubt it, just as Bush's grandising the outsourcing of our Countries major corporations was going to be a great benefit to the Country, Whoop's goofed again, it ended up cost us more jobs, better pay, and the lagest deficit in the United States History.
We might as well have throw it away, maybe that way we could at least go back and get it when we realized our error!
not suprizing as where the money goes anyway but at least we could use the illeagles to build it before we send them back bet it would get done a lot sooner
The one who will be bitching the most is "A real citizen" when the Chinese-made pipe and tube is recalled!  Stay tuned . . .
Just put the authorized fence up and send the illegals with their staph infections back. You can throw them over the fence if needed.

Why does it take so long to implement?  Use rocks, sticks, mud, old tires, anything, just seal the border.  And let's bill the rest of the world for the cost.
Irony, Scott? From the filthy draft-dodging swine that equated a Bronze Star winner from Viet Nam as a coward, and then handed them out to soldiers who were captured unconcious without firing a shot, or murdered by their own men? Do you think these people understand irony? I don't think they do. This is the  "War is Peace" crowd. Even the word "irony" is subversive when you tell such lies.
This administration has never cared about the American people, only their rich friends. Dubai Ports, Haliburton, Blackwater, etc. They secretly flew the Saudi royal family home after 911 without even questioning them (even though almost all of the hijackers were Saudis). We're still not inspecting a very large percentage of cargo coming into our ports, although I have to take off my shoes every time I fly.  They took a huge budget surplus and turned it into a deficit in only a few short years. Prescription drug plan that forbids the government from negotiating lower drug prices. I could go on all day. Wake up America. These people do not care about us! You have been hoodwinked again and again. I haven't even mentioned the war that has done nothing to improve our security but has severely strained our military and our budget! Is being a Republican so important that you forget basic common sense? Next up, war with Iran. These people are taking us down the crapper and you neocons are to blame!

He is  such  a sleeze  bag.
When  are  we  going  to  get  rid  of  this  idiot ?
"America's Great Fence of China"? When the Chinese devalue their currency and the dollar crashes, it will be a tourist attraction that a Billion Chinese will want to come over and look at.  Way to go, Dubya!

WHAT? CHINA? WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED THAT? Hell everything is made in China or haven't you been paying attention lately? Even the lead in their paint that is poisoning our kids is made in China! Check the lead in the glazing on all the dishes you eat off, they are all made in China also! Thank you GREAT AMERICAN CORPORATIONS FOR BEING SO LOYAL AND AMERICAN, you traitor bastards! After many years, the American icon "HERSHEY CHOCALATE" moves to Mexico and has become part of the TRADE DEFFICIENT, SHIPPING THEIR STUFF BACK ACROSS THE BORDER! When there are no more paychecks here, then who the hell will buy your junk? America became great not by making things cheaper, it became great by making stuff "BETTER"! Yes quality was another way to say America! It can be fixed but first it will have to be completely broken! That is the only way Americans will understand the real problem! Norm-American Veteran
Same thing is happening with arming IRAQ with AK47's.
Shouldn't we arm them with American Made Rifles.
I agree that we should use U.S steel and keep American's working, hopefully it will happen, but we have a bigger problem as we all know, ILLEGALS. We need to get the wall up ASAP and stop them from SUCKING our country dry. Teddy Rosevelt and his crew shot illegals crossing the Rio Grand for sport, we should have the same right.

I am glad that Chinese made steel pipes were used in the border fence. American should do something with high value adding works, not making steel pipes.
Heres another outrage. Courtesy of the Democrats.

We will recall the ''outrage''over the collapse of the Minneapolis bridge which had Democrats rising in selfrighteous indignation. Lets have a look at where the ''infrastructure''dough is going.

One million dollars from a Clinton/Schumer earmark to celebrate ''Hippieland'',a Bethel,New York site near a Mr.Maxwell Yasgars alfalfa farm which was the site of WOODSTOCK.Two days after the earmark, ''Hippie''organizers, millionares and Clinton ''Hillraisers'' Alan Gerry and his wife placed 9,200$,the most allowed by federal law, into Hillarys campaign coffers to add to the 252,000$ they have already donated.

5.1 million dollars in earmarks by Sen.Harkin, for a center bearing the name ''The Thomas Harkin Center'' for medical research.

1.7 million dollars in earmarks from Sen.Feinstein, for the use in Tinseltown of ''medical professionals to oversee medical dramas on television''.

2 million in Rep.Jack Murtha earmarks to the ''study of magnet, crystal and yoga therapies''.[these California billionaires, three days after the passage of this earmark, placed 50 thousand dollars into Murtha,Moran, and Viscloskys[all Democrats] campaign warchests.

Filling The Swamp In Washington.

That would be the recycled steel from the World Trade Center.
This administration will do ANYTHING   AND They're getting away with it
Why is any one surprised? bush outsourced his presidency to cheney, the war to private contractors, justice to graduates of a law school that is only 10 years old, his torture to other nations...whats a little steel for a foolish fence...want to stop the illegals? throw employers in jail and seize their businesses and homes for hiring them..problem solved
The fence is a really ineffective, purely political non-solution.  As long as the jobs are here, the immigrants will come to fill them. Build a fence, they'll take a boat, dig a tunnel, fly a plane etc.  There are only two real solutions to this, eliminate the possibility of employment here, or create the possibility of employment in their home countries.  Since either of these requires sacrifice by citizens of this country and cooperation of our government with the entire hemisphere, don't look for things to change anytime soon.
Just build the fence, already.
Well if you all want things to be built in the USA, then the UNIONs need to back off of their big wage guarantees to the workers.

The Unions were a great thing when they were started, but as usuall labor leaders have driven the price of everything out of sight in this country.  It is not the politicians who set the wage scale in the USA, it is the unions who are driving this country to have to buy from outside of USA.
What a bunch of left leaning freaks on this subject.  Oh wait, I just realized this story was presented by the almost falling over from leaning too far left MSNBC.  Quit your friggen crying already losers.  This is a new world order.  And the US is now ordering their goods from other sources based on the best bid.  Pull up your boot straps and make products that are more competitive and properly priced and you too just might find yourself with a lucrative US contract.  Signed~Middle Income American in So Cal doing just fine despite the call from the left leaners to blame everything under the sun on the best damn Presidential Admin next to R Regans in my lifetime.
Probably has lead in it.

I guess I'm a slow learner...........explain why we need a fence?
We don't need a fence - we need to expand our military and simply let them defend us.

This is a solution for people who won't take a stand - fencing with fence-sitters!!  Pull our boys outta Iraq and let them be the fence along our southern border.

DUH!!!!
Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper and simpler to pay Mexico to build the fence on their side of the border?
China and Japan both produce a better quality steel than U.S. steel manufacturers, and for a cheaper price.  U.S. companies can be competitive when they need to, unless they are held hostage by unions that demand top pay for a job description that doesn't require them to work.
I believe the president was Grant.
For those of you that say build a fence,I should remind you that there is 75 miles of water(fence) between Florida and Cuba, and 2 or 3 times that much to Haiti. So, if you theory was right that a 20 foot tall peice of steel will "keep them out" then we wouldn't have Cubans or Haitians either. Sorry to be the one to break it to you but we do. A trip to the beach, even this far north (St Aug.), may yeild a raft or floation device. A stinking fence is just another waste of our money. They might as well dig a 20 foot deep trench. America, if we continue down this road there won't be an America left.
i say we outsource congress to india.and see how they like watching their jobs go oversee's then maybe we could purchase a real govrnment
Guess the charges will just be added to what we borrow every day to pay for that little conflict in Iraq?  Probably something the GAC could arrange, though unethical, probably not illegal.
This is to Peter in kansas. So your dealing with your company outsourcing with no problems? Just wait till you get your last paycheck as your company closes its doors here for good then who will be the crybaby!?!  Global competition? How about the systematic rape of America,If your company closes its doors and leaves perhaps you should go with them because we don't need anyone like you living here!
Know the theory of Absolute Advantage and Comparative Advantage? It's OK to buy Chinese fence if they buy our Boeing not Airbus.
