Brownback says Rudy won't get nod

Posted: Friday, October 19, 2007 11:17 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
WASHINGTON, DC -- After his Values Voters speech here, in which he called for all Americans to defend life at every stage, Brownback refused to confirm the news that he is dropping out of the presidential race this afternoon. “I’m headed back to Kansas and I’ll be making an announcement there,” he said.

The Kansas senator did acknowledge, however, that he is convinced the Republican Party will nominate a “pro-life candidate,” and he feels that Giuliani does not fit the bill. “Governor Romney’s certainly taken a pro-life position now,” Brownback said to reporters after his speech. “We’ll see if that’s something that can persuade the American public. My criticism of [Romney] has been that you need someone that believes in the cause to persuade the American public, and if it’s seen as switching on a lot of topics it’s tough to persuade the American public. Mayor Giuliani has said he’s pro-choice.”

Brownback has been openly critical of Romney on the abortion issue, even going as far as to place automated phone calls to voters in Iowa criticizing the former Massachusetts governor for his inconsistent stance on the issue. Today, he confirmed that he does not believe the GOP will nominate Giuliani due to his pro-choice history, and that he feels that the party is divided because “we don’t have an heir apparent for the first time in a couple of decades.”

“This is a very logical place we would be at this point in time,” Brownback said. “It’s October of the year before. This is a lengthy courtship... Some of the other candidates, [faith] is less of a core issue. They’re not opposed, but it’s not the thing that gets them up and going in the morning.

George Bush came to them as a man of faith, believed in the cause. He had a personal conversion that was pretty dramatic. And believed in the cause and this is kind of everything. And then he’s got the resources and the name to drive it. I come to them with the cause, but I don’t have the resources and the name. I guess I should change my name.”

When asked if he would attend the GOP presidential debate this weekend, Brownback simply said, “Stay tuned.” Brownback will hold a press conference in Topeka, KS at 4:45 pm ET.

If it's Thompson, I check my dwindling respect for Brownback at the door.
Brown-back it is the WAR stupid.  Hope the wind blows you way past Kansas to never, never land.

It's funny how the only time Brownback has made headlines is when he decides to drop out of the race.

Thank you biased media!
I fully expect Brownback to endorse Ron Paul if he expects to have any future left in politics.
Brownback, perhaps you should change your name to "Brownshirt" instead. No doubt it would get you a lot more support in your party.
I personally believe that Ron Paul is a far more balanced representative of a Constitutional Republic and he is and has been Pro Life, Border Security, and liberty centered for years, his views are not something newly submitted.
Brownback, you are a moron. Rudy will make a great President.  Stop worrying about what people do in the privacy of their own home.  Go away!!!
Between Brownback and that former Intelligence Committee chairman Senator Pat Roberts, that nothing piece of flyover country (Kansas) has the the two dumbest senators.

I must admit I was born there, but it is a good place to be FROM.

The strong support of the religious right is required for any republican candidate. However, that group would have to be more stupid than even I can imagine if they support a candidate simply because he utters the words "anti abortion" with canned sincerity. Where has lip service to this social issue (or any other issue of importance to the religious right) gotten them in the past? How satisfied are they with progress towards their objectives under Bush speak? The religious right is waking up to the fact that they've been used for their voting block. Brownback's formula is as old as the woods planted by Karl Rove...he should be looking for other ways to gather in the votes. Think war, economy, health, immigration Sammy!
Oh give me a break..Ron Paul?? The biggest RINO out there??

If Brownback should endorse anyone..its Mike Huckabee..He's the only other candidate that evangelical Christians can rally around..
If Republicans try to focus on faith, and woo the Christian right, they will lose.  Brownback is the first example in a long line of GOP candidates who have yet to realize that people of faith are not all ignorant to the GOPs political posturing over the last 15 years.  They realize that there faith was taken advantage of, and how dangerous it can be to cast a vote based soley on one's willingness to cast themselves as 'God's Candidate'.  We have seen the decite and disaster that follows such uninformed decisions.
Who cares about who a failed candidate backs? They failed for a reason.
God save us from Men of Faith. They are at your feet or at your throat, but sooner or later these ideologues will slit that throat if you don't comply with their medieval prejudices and superstitions. These are the Luddites, Pinheads and Non-readers and non-thinkers of the world, simple minded with simplistic "solutions." Brownback is their cheerleader. Good riddance!
I have a lot of respect for anyone who puts them self out there as a presidential candidate.  Don't hate the guy for realizing he can't win and wanting to go back to a more normal life.

I've met the Senator, He is "right" on the issues. He's been to the Middle East, is on the Judiciary, has the respect of colleages, excepting the media and the way the game is played, money, national name recognition, etc, he had to drop out, and discount his views at your own peril. He make obermann wilt!

Edorse WHO?  Ron Paul and his supporters give  reinvigorated meaning to the term "lunatic fringe."  Brownback is a decent capable man which is probably why he did not do better.  It is time for social conservatives to get behind Huckabee.
If you had kept Imus, we would have understood this whole mess better.  Get him back so we can hear what the candidates really think instead of being bombarded with rehearsed sound bites.  Imus made them face the issues.
I have never been a supporter of Brownback and think his campaign was built upon a faulty foundation of merely being a "me too" candidate.  His views did not distinguish him from the others and so there seemed to be no real reason for him to be running.

That said, I have always been impressed by candor.  I wish him well and applaud his early awakening to the fact that his campaign is entirely extraneous.  It's especially honorable for him to drop out before the debate rather than take part if he knows he can't sustain a continued campaign.

Godspeed, Brownback.
Media attention? This guy gets 1% in the polls. He is irrelevant.
If ONLY there were a candidate that is consistently pro-life... a doctor maybe...
He should endore Huckabee....the true social conservative
Come on. The dude never had a chance. Brownback sounds too much like Brokeback, ya dig?
It is time for the fiscal conservatives to split from the "single issue" social conservatives.  Neither side could possibly win but it would give the fiscal conservatives the necessity to build a real majority and not one subjet to the unrealistic expectations of a fanatical minority.

I pray that they walk and force us to build a better party!
Endorse Ron Paul?  Are you kidding me? That guy is nuts.  Huckabee is the guy we need!!!
There is NO WAY the Republicans will win the White House with a "pro-life" candidate. No doubt Brownback hopes for a cabinet position with Romney and that's why he's now making favorable statements about him.
Brown WHO? I believe that respecting life is a big issue, however, beating Hillary is a bigger issue. America cannot survive another Clinton Administration, specially when it is an inexperienced Clinton.

I think reality set in for Senator Brownback, he was not going to get the nomination.
Rudy will make a "great President"???  He was a terrible mayor in NYC, is hugely unpopular there, has no experience in national or international affairs, and thus has no credentials to support a candidacy for president.  Are we really so stupid that we'll elect another incompetent after the last 7 years???
Brownback's withdrawl signals the beginning of the atrition portion of the primary campaign.  I wouldn't be surprised to see Tancredo go next.  As for the candidates who drop out giving the nod to Congressman Paul, I don't see that as a realistic scenario.  Paul's stance on the war is the polar opposite of every one of his opponents.  For them to give support to Paul would undermine a position they have so vehemently supported throughout the race.

I believe Congressman Paul can do just fine on his own.  The debate should be interesting this weekend!
He can drop out or stay in for all I care-- none of the Republican candidates are getting my vote unless they suddenly decide to END THE WAR NOW!
Brownback, like McCain, did himself in on the immigration issue.  He switched his vote from for to against on the amnesty bill only AFTER he saw it was going to fail.  He is through, he won't be able to get elected to dog catcher, much less governer of Kansas.  (We in Kansas know that is his plan)

Mike Jones - your ignorance is astounding.  You call Dr. Paul a RINO?  You have ZERO understanding about what it means to be a Republican or a conservative.  Fools like you will bankrupt this nation, financially and morally.

As for your comment about Huckabee - am I missing something or did Christ actually say "Blessed are the war makers"  or perhaps "Blessed are the bomb makers" or "Blessed are the pottery barn war supporters".

Ron Paul a RINO?  What makes him a RINO?  Following the Constitution?  Working consistently for smaller government?  Emphasizing personal freedom and personal responsibility?

Ron Paul is the only candidate I've seen so far that makes sense for the Republicans.  His appeal reaches across party lines to the point where his ideas and adherence to principal will present a stark contrast with those of Queen wanna-be Hillary.
Brownback doesn't know jack. Kansas is too good for this spineless big spending dude.

Rudy will reign bigtime.
As we consider who the best candidate is for us, a very personal choice during the primaries, perhaps this will help.  My father sent me this web site which asks a few questions about what your priorities are and then ranks the candidates based on your answers.  I am sure people can poke holes in the process but I found it encouraging to find my assumptions of which candidate matched my beliefs being proven by this process.  My father found out his choice was not the same as the web result, but rather is now looking closely at a different candidate.

Both of us have moved from a tier 1 candidate to tier 2 so we may not win unless MANY more people discover this for themselves.  Give it a try.

I am a Democrat and perhaps I am not welcome in this thread, but I feel objectively like Mike Huckabee stands to benefit the most from people like Brownback (and soon to be more) dropping out. Huckabee has broad appeal that many Democrats would choose over Hillary.
Chopped up babies will destroy the democrats and any other party that embraces the largest holocaust in world history.

1 in 3 children are killed by abortionists.
There is no way a republican candidate can win unless he is a PRO-LIFE candidate.  However, he better be conservative across the board as well, including on the immigration issue.
Sorry to burst your bubble Sam, but an overwhelming majority of American support THE RIGHT for a *WOMAN* to choose for herself.  While many people don't like abortion, it's the ugly side of freedom.

Who is HE to impose his religious beliefs on American Women?

Government has no place telling people how to live their lives especially when it's based on his religious beliefs.

End of story.

...then again, he's of the same ilk that wants to put Biblical Creationism into public school curriculum.  <EYES ROLLING>
GET IMUS BACK AND GIVE US A CHANCE TO SEE WHAT THESE GUYS ARE ALL ABOUT....BOTH PARTIES
I know this is a SHOCKER to guys like Brownback, but abortion is NOT the biggest problem regular working people have.  It's healthcare, job security, education, inflation, gas prices, etc.. bread and butter issues.  What some woman I don't even know chooses to do with her pregnancy is really, when the chips are down, none of my business.  And I say that as a mother and as a woman 6 weeks pregnant.

And by the way, the republicans had control for 6 years of all branches of government.. and Roe still stands.  You guys are SUCKERS who vote on this issue. Republicans are no more committed to overturning Roe than Democrats.  That's the reality.
I'm not an American but if I was I'd be voting for Ron Paul. He seems to be the only one that represents the American ideal that I admire.
Amazing how pro-lifers like Bush and Brownback only care about the life of a fetus. Once its born they no longer care if the family is struggling to provide health care, or if the parents can afford birth control to plan the birth of the next offspring. If they are low-income with minimum wage jobs, they don't support raising it to accomodate cost-of-living increases. And of course they want anyone convicted of a capital crime to suffer the harshest penalty- death-with limited appeals. How is that pro-life or pro-family?
Is Rudy a perfect candidate? No...but who is? Is it better to boycott Rudy and guarantee a pro-abortion Hillary? For too many, the answer seems to be "Yes" and therein one finds the Achilles heel of the GOP. A Socialist HRC seems more palatable to these erstwhile Republicans....I do not need to be 'for' Rudy as much as I must obey the moral imperative to oppose Hillary.
