Brownback says Rudy won't get nod

Posted: Friday, October 19, 2007 11:17 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
WASHINGTON, DC -- After his Values Voters speech here, in which he called for all Americans to defend life at every stage, Brownback refused to confirm the news that he is dropping out of the presidential race this afternoon. “I’m headed back to Kansas and I’ll be making an announcement there,” he said.

The Kansas senator did acknowledge, however, that he is convinced the Republican Party will nominate a “pro-life candidate,” and he feels that Giuliani does not fit the bill. “Governor Romney’s certainly taken a pro-life position now,” Brownback said to reporters after his speech. “We’ll see if that’s something that can persuade the American public. My criticism of [Romney] has been that you need someone that believes in the cause to persuade the American public, and if it’s seen as switching on a lot of topics it’s tough to persuade the American public. Mayor Giuliani has said he’s pro-choice.”

Brownback has been openly critical of Romney on the abortion issue, even going as far as to place automated phone calls to voters in Iowa criticizing the former Massachusetts governor for his inconsistent stance on the issue. Today, he confirmed that he does not believe the GOP will nominate Giuliani due to his pro-choice history, and that he feels that the party is divided because “we don’t have an heir apparent for the first time in a couple of decades.”

“This is a very logical place we would be at this point in time,” Brownback said. “It’s October of the year before. This is a lengthy courtship... Some of the other candidates, [faith] is less of a core issue. They’re not opposed, but it’s not the thing that gets them up and going in the morning.

George Bush came to them as a man of faith, believed in the cause. He had a personal conversion that was pretty dramatic. And believed in the cause and this is kind of everything. And then he’s got the resources and the name to drive it. I come to them with the cause, but I don’t have the resources and the name. I guess I should change my name.”

When asked if he would attend the GOP presidential debate this weekend, Brownback simply said, “Stay tuned.” Brownback will hold a press conference in Topeka, KS at 4:45 pm ET.

Man, you guys take this Republican crap to seriously.
Sam Brownback should just go crawl under a rock and disappear.  If the republican party nominates anyone other than Rudy Giuliani, they are going to lose the white house for sure!  The republican party needs to stop catering so much to the christian right wing!
No candidate who is a member of the Council On Foreign Relations should be nominated for anything. They are all members except Tancredo and Ron Paul. Therefore if we want a straight president who is beholden to no one except the American people we should choose one of these two men.

Bownback is one of the true pro-life candidates.  What hurt him was his stand on the war.  It will be great to find a pro-life candidate who opposes the war and wants to being our men and women home.  No more coffins for ideological hypocrisy!!!

The VETO of this SCHIPS bill guaranteed that there is No way the GOP wins the White House this time.. The excuse for the veto was that "The middle class doesn't deserve as much a break as the poor"...That doesn't resonate with most of us conservatives...
"Defend life at every stage" sounds like Ron Paul.
Brownback is missing the point. His views, similar to those of Bush, have failed. Even the Republican realize that, which is why there is no republican heir apparent. The war, economy, social issues have resulted in a total distrust of the government.  Change is needed from the current status quo. Brownback did not distinguish himself, nor has any other candidate.
Just goes to show you how out of step the GOP is. The fact is that most Americans support abortion rights in one form or another, but "conservatives" like Brownback wonder why Rudy Giuliani is in the lead for their party's nomination. They also wonder why people don't buy their "conservatism" when it involves the government dictating morality.

Figure it out, guys.
What is needed in the Republican Party is a large dose of pragmatism that seems to be lost on the single issue social conservatives in this country. Their moral agenda that precludes them from considering a Rudy Giuliani or Fred Thompson will only act to insure that this country will be run by people whose socialist and moral agendas will dominate our political and economic landscape for years to come.
hey, clayton hallmark, thank you for leaving Kansas!
I could see this guy getting behind Huckabee. Nutty as Brownback, but actually likable.
It should be a grand battle at the GOP Convention between the secularists and the religious right.

I am hoping the religious right loses and forms their own party.  I believe the nation has had enough of their nonsense.
"Endorse Ron Paul?  Are you kidding me? That guy is nuts."

Is supporting liberty, restoring America as a Constitutional Republic instead of a Democracy, preserving life, eliminating taxes on labor, preserving our right to keep and bear arms, etc. really nuts?  Wow.  I have to assume you'd support Fidel Castro for president...now who's the nut?
Brokeback or Brownbeck . . . whatever your name is  -go away and start practicing saying "President Giuliani".
At last, we are witnessing the dissolution of the Republican party.  Strange bedfellows those social and fiscal "conservatives" once were.
Rudy Giuliani was the greatest Mayor of New York City of all time.  Everyone loves him.  He is a National Hero and the next president of the United States.
“George Bush came to them as a man of faith, believed in the cause. He had a personal conversion that was pretty dramatic. And believed in the cause and this is kind of everything.”

What kind of a delusional moron is Brownback? He still thinks George Bush was annointed and appointed by God? An he saw himself as the heir to that?

I'd think the devil was guiding these idiots if I wasn't a non-believer.
I have as much confidence in Ron Paul protecting our country against terrorism as I would Hillary Clinton. Let's say Zero here!
Ron Paul has a better chance at hitting the powerball lottery while simultaneously being struck by an asteroid than he does getting the Republican nomination for president.

Can somebody clue me in on why war is a family value?
Brownback not the crusader he comes off as. He is a political hack trying to win  power and money. For the record not many support him in Kansas anymore.
hey christy, quick question, how is abortion done in the privacy in your own home? i always thought murder was a public issue...
Hello People! This is God! I finally want to set the record straight here. First, I am a registered Democrat.  Second, I made man in my image, so it's ok to be gay and have same sex marriage.  Third, People are not people until they tough the air so go ahead and abort fetuses all you want.  Fourth, things are getting a bit warmer down there because of all the fire and brim stone being thrown around by those who think they're speaking in my name...the republicans...not global warming.  They do not stand for what is my true word.  Dont follow them. They are heretics.  Fifth, and finally, Hillary Clinton is going to be your next president.
Senator Brownback NEVER had a chance to win the nomination or general election. He is too driven by a single issue and not sincere in that one. He has never introduced a single bill or taken a single action that express his "values". They are just election year bumper sticker phrases delivered with no passion and an implied requirement that conservatives blindly support republicans regardless of the "real agenda." Sam Brownback is irrelavent to the country as a whole.
who is this brownback guy,,never heard of him, don't think its important who he endorses, republicans have no one to win the whitehouse...democrats will win this one.
Ron Paul who? Where did that clown crawl out from. He is the most comical one in the race and brings nothing to the Republican Party except a side show and a waste of space at the podium. While I would not have favored Brownback, I will not support Rudy. Nice guy, but not trustworthy on guns, abortion, judges, etc. To vilify Brownback for believing in human life, liberty, happiness and the goodness of the United States shows how much you people have gone into the depths of Democrat madness. God save us all if Hillary is in charge. Hang on to your pocketbooks. Lock up your guns.
SR
Brownback is a religious nutjob.  Now he has the time to go back to his Kansas offices and bath the feet of his staff.  Read up on "The Fellowship" group he is affiliated with.  I love these country bumpkins who think we should all be one issue voters and abortion is that issue.  This is how out of touch these people are with the public.  The American people care about the war, the economy and improving the healthcare system.  Not this or constitutional amendments defining marriage.  Did none of these guys pay attention to the elections last fall?
Lunatic fringe?

I see we are still following the tactics used to smear Ghandi. That worked well :)
If it's the media then why is Giuliani ahead in the GOP polls?  I think FOX and Zogby polls will put Brownback in the same place.  If you're blaming the mainstream media for Brownback's demise then you've been watching too much mainstream media and not enough of the radio talk shows.  Pat Robertson supports Giuliani, and that speaks volumes since he stated that the 911 attacks were the cause of moral decay six years ago.  Evidently Robertson doesn't think that anymore, now it's actually about terrorism and security.  Hypocrites be exposed!

I admire the few that won't flip flop on Giuliani and stand their ground.  We'll see if Brownback puts his integrity where his mouth is and support Huckabee who is the only true voice of social conservatism in this race.  The fact that evangelicals aren't supporting Brownback or Huckabee by considering a possible third party candidate is strange to me.  Maybe Brownback is that third party?

At any rate evangelicals are in a real pickle because many (not all)believe that not voting is a sin, which is spawned by an extra-creative implication based on an inference that is subjectively translated by those who want to guilt trip people into voting.  If it's Giuliani and Hillary with no third party I guess the evangelical powers will have to sort out the Biblical mess they never thought would occur.
Agreed with Rob, I hope Brownback is correct and the GOP gives the nomination to someone other then Giuliani. As for Huckabee, let's not forget he said he would go into war with Iran, without the apporval of Congress... and he has strong amnesty stance for illegals.. He is pushing the same Bush agenda. As far as I'm concerned the only viable candidate that the republicans have is Ron Paul, and no not all of his supporters are into conspiracies.. I'm looking into the guy myself.. gotta say I'm impressed

And let's review Giuliani, shall we:
Rudy Giuliani has been embroiled in scandals, his 9/11 record is blotched.. just ask the firefighters that blame him for the defective radios, that he was warned about, which resulted in over 242 deaths...

He later claimed that he spend just as much time as workers on ground zero, and didn't offer any kind of sympathy for the fact that they are suffering from illnesses, It was later found that he only spend 29 hours on ground zero, less then the time he spend at Yankee Stadium..

Then he was warned in 1993, after the first world trade center attacks to move the security office from the seventh floor out of the building in case of an emergency.. of course he didn't listen and look at the results..

He won't sign a pledge confirming lower taxes

And New York City’s crime rate being down attributes to police Commissioner Bill Bratton, Rudy had nothing to do with it.. “Bratton, not Giuliani, was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1996.[54] Giuliani forced Bratton out of his position after two years, in what was generally seen as a battle of two large egos in which Giuliani was unable to accept Bratton's celebrity”

His co-chair has been quoted as labeling "blacks retarded," not to mention that Giuliani's main sponsors have been caught in money fraud, drug/prostitution scandals

Don't forget when Rudy was mayor he was already accused of racial profiling, and not even reading the 9/11 commission report

Contrary to popular belief he does not support gay marriage, only civil unions!

He has been married three times, including once to his cousin, and his own children won't even speak to him, his daughter plans to vote for someone else..
Manuel,

What about another Clinton Administration can America not survive?  A buget surplus, bustling economy, robust middle-class, the respect of other nations...?

Focusing on social issues and attempting to limit peoples freedoms, rather than on issues that are truely detrimental to the prosperity of ALL Americans, is why not matter who the GOP nominates, they will fail miserably.

Wake up.
Hey Idaho..can we trade Senators?Brownback has/is/will always be a 1 issue candidate(anti-abortion).He isn't as bad as Pat (stick foot in mouth ) Roberts, but still,he's a dyed in the Bush Defender.
As a former Kansan, Brownback has been an embarassment.  Thank goodness he's not continuing.
Sam please throw your support to Mike Huckabee so that you and he can make a difference in uniting the Conservative base of the Republican party to get our country back.
As a former independent and Bush voter (2000, not 2004)  I can tell you honestly that I will NEVER vote for another republican liar for as long as we both shall live.  The true colors of the republican party have been shown by George and the morons who support him.  He is an embarassment.   Also, I cannot imagine ANYONE who has ever exclaimed the words "Thank God George Bush is our President"  immediatly after 9-11 is certainly NOT qualified to be mayor of Fargo much less the POTUS.  The only nominee that wouldn't make me sick to my stomach on the R side is Paul.
Well Brownback is the first "Loser" out the door, for being so conservative why did he not have more support?  mmmmmmm  I wonder who the next Republican loser will be. The nomination is going to go to Guiliani and he will lose to Clinton.  That's why the repubs in congress are retiring like rats from a burning barn, they know their gig is up and they are taking the money and heading for that great lobbiest job in the sky. George Bush and his repubs have destroyed this country.
Rudy is a media hound. Has been running for Pres for 10 years. He dropped out of sen race because he did not have a chance. He is not a true republican because is not that dumb, but he is a true phony and therefore fits. Real question is US really that dumb to elect another dumb republican. Our country went from surplus to hugh debt, can not afford health care because we waste on killing arabs. When will we wake up.
ENDORSE HUCKABEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The fundies are a HOOT!

They say they have the power and they say Rudy is unacceptable.  Republicans can't win without their fundy vote and Rudy won't win because he ain't gonna get their fundy vote.

But how much power do the fundies have?

Rudy leads in the polls.

If the fundies had the power why wouldn't they hand pick an acceptable candidate and power him to the nomination?

Because they can't.   They don't have the power everyone became so convinced they had.

Tony Perkins and James Dobson are just a couple of guys who tried to score some power and some cash off religion until people just woke up and realized they are not what they say they are.  They are not kingmakers.  They are salesmen.
"Our Halliburton, who exists for profit; hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done as soon as the Middle East is ours.  Give us this contract our daily bread and forgive us our invasions as we slaughter everyone who disagrees with neo-conism.  And lead us not into the temptation of wanting to share with others what we have stolen for ourselves in the name of destroying the Axis of Evil.  For thine profit is the kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever."  Yep, Senator Brownhack, George Bush is truly a man of faith.

Remember, folks, one person's blasphemy is another man's truth.
If it's the media then why is Giuliani ahead in the GOP polls?  I think FOX and Zogby polls will put Brownback in the same place. Brownback should endorse Mike Huckabee..He's the only other candidate that evangelical Christians can rally around and he is rising in the polls. I think most people like Mike Huckabee's personality.
There are three issues which are critical in the minds of a huge majority of the public. Those are, in order of importance---the war(S), the economy, and immigration. The wars and immigration both negatively impact the economy, unless anyone really believes the US can continue to accrue debt at the level we are. The wars effects on the economy are easy to see---12 billion dollars a month has to come from somewhere. The cost of illegal immigration is not as high, but it is signifigant. Once you count the costs of providing medical care, schooling, and incarceration of illegals it's a huge expense. The Republicans need a candidate who will end the wars, reduce spending, pay down the debt, and return our currency to a postition of value. Who is that? It's not the warmongers(and that includes Hillary).
Funny how people call Ron Paul supports the "lunatic fringe".  Or they call Ron Paul a "nut."  This just shows you how far we've fallen as a nation when strictly following the Constitution makes you a crazy man.
Brownback was my second choice in this race.  For me, it's now either Thompson or Huckabee.  They both talk straight and appear to have real principles, like Brownback.

P.S. - BTW, H P Boston.  It appears the stupidity reigns supreme in your mind.  Opposition to warring on terrorists and their sponsoring nations is the realm of Move*n.*rg and the utterly inane cool-aid drinkers like yourself.  Get a grip, and don't just read the opposition, but understand the economics of politics  (moron).
Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate that can beat Hillary.
The American People, on the left, on the right and in the Middle, are sick and tired of politics as usual.  Ron Paul is the real deal, and if you think he is "crazy" then I guess you must also think that Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and George Washington were crazy too.  My God, how far we have fallen when standing up for the Constitution and the principles that founded are country are deemed "crazy."
Brownback is a dumbass with ugly hair. He would not have gone far enough as Giuliani or Thompson in fighting terrorism in America. While Giuliani is powerful with his national database and national ID, I believe Fred Thompson is the more viable candidate because he is pro-life and he is taller.

Check out Fred T at http://www.fredthompsonforum.com
So many Republicans in denial!  The War will decide the Presidency.  The only Republican who can defeat Hillary Clinton is Ron Paul.
Ron Paul is the only candidate deserving of support.  I believe Brownback and Huckabee are both good guys and would vote for either of them before Rudy or Romney.  As for Ron, anyone who says "he's nuts" either doesn't know their history or doesn't understand the trajectory our country is on right now. He's the only fiscal conservative in the bunch who really means it.
Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate that can beat Hillary.
