Edwards hits Clinton campaign funds

Posted: Friday, October 19, 2007 2:33 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The Edwards campaign released a statement criticizing Clinton for her "questionable contributions" from poor residents in New York City's Chinatown that "are raising eyebrows again," as reported in the Los Angeles Times.

"Many of their donors are not even registered to vote," Campaign Manager David Bonior writes, "and at least one denied even making any contribution at all.

Bonior also questions Clinton's electability and her ability to fix a "broken" and "corrupt" system."

“The bottom line is we need a nominee who can do two things," Bonior writes, "campaign in all 50 states and challenge our broken system in Washington. With every day the growing question has to be can Hillary Clinton do either?”

Also, in the campaign's continued attempt to spin Edwards' decision to take matching funds, Bonior also questions why Clinton says public funding is the answer "to fix the system," but she does not take public funds.

"Senator Clinton should explain why she doesn't mean what she says," Bonior writes.

*** UPDATE *** The Clinton campaign sends this response: "In 2004, John Edwards said, "If you are looking for the candidate that will do the best job of attacking the other Democrats, I am not your guy." But now that his campaign has stalled, he's become that guy. If Mr. Edwards is so concerned about campaign finance reform, he should give back the contributions he got from Geoffrey Feiger who was indicted for illegally funneling money into his campaign.

How did all of those poor people give $1,000 donations to Hillary?
Why when Hillary makes a complaint its just a comment when others make a remark it called being negative well she cant have it both ways when she attacks Edwards or Obama she can expect them to answer heras you can see Hillary is not the one to bring change  a good xample she s still getting questionable it seems to be a pattern  donation just like bill did when they get caught they act like it a surprise. we had enought of the same old politics of 20 yrs of Bush Clinton.
Stu, Saginaw

"think it's time for the "also rans" in both parties to do 2 things:  1) discuss why we should vote "FOR" them rather than for them to try to convince us why we should vote "AGAINST" others, and 2) if they can't do that, get the hell out of the way!"

I said almost the same thing on a post yesterday.  Spending time trying to counter every statement made by an opposing candidate seems a waste of time to me.  Stick to the issues, tell me your solutions to the problems our country faces, and stop trying to find an untruth in everthing said by the other candidates or trying to "one up" your competitiors with your poll numbers and the amount of money your campaign has raised.  Spend time on the things that matter more to voters, the weakened opinion of the US in world countries, the economy, health care, education, etc.
Bionic Woman

"Notice that Hillary discusses issues - while Obama and Edwards discuss Hillary?  That says it all.

The more these two guys do this, the more irrelevant they become.  It is not a tactic that works for anyone.

The only way they will get attention is by coming up with some good solutions."

Very Good Post.  You have it exactly right!
Hillary never learns from her mistakes.  Didn't Bill have the same Chinese donation problems in the 90's? Isn't Hsu in jail? It is easy for her campaign to set up a computer program to scan donations base on occupations, level of donation and economic census data. People would be going ballistic if Barrack was receiving $2,300 donations from blacks living in the Fourth Ward of New Orleans.  One things that Hillary has demonstrated is she doesn't learn from her mistakes.  Case in point:

1.  Campaign donations
2.  Healthcare reform (making it mandated)
3.  Earmarks (trys to squeak thru another for the
   Woodstock Muesum)
4.  Authorizing the Iraqi War/and now voting for the
   Iran amendment.

At this rate, Hillary is going to do herself in with her greediness and bad judgement.  She must be counting on people's love for Bill and that she is a woman will sheild her from her bad judgements and lies.
I think it time for all of you people to put this Dem. Rep. argument on the back burner. It seems to me that what we should really be looking at is who will do what the American people(all of them) want. It is also time to consider what is right for this country and not just what is right for our economy.
These are the kind of things that should be reported in a campaign, then we know who is really honest and can make our choice for President knowing exactly w hat kind of person you are electing. This news is not exactly surprising, the campaign doesn't seem to care where the money or endorsements come from so long as there is more money, more money and more money so Hillary can spend the money on pantsuits and new dye jobs. Lately you can't believe anything she says, flip flopping on the issues and spinning her decisions on her votes in the Senate.  Is this really the kind of President we want running the country? As for Edwards, he trails Billary because she gets all the media attention because she happens to be the former First Lady and Bill Clinton's wife, no other reason. Not to mention she's in bed with the lobbyist.
MK, MO, who cares whether Hillary is a women or not, fact is she is not a leader but a follower and obviously dishonest, hence accepting funds from non citizens. She will not do anything for these poor people so why is she accepting their donations.  Give it back Hillary.  You are misinformed about Edwards by the way, if you want real change Edwards is the guy, if you want the status quo vote for Bill Clinton.  Read the op-ed from Camille Pagagia, she has said a mouth full.
To all the Edwards haters on this page, you probably have attacked Edwards in the past in some way without knowing a thing about the man.
The reports about Hillary Clinton are not attacks but reports, after all she can't have all positive reports. So stop attacking John Edwards.
No! i donot believe that Hillary is guilty of this. I believe that Edwards will do anything to get the lead. I believe he is a lier and is making statments that will cost him any gains that he will try to make. I donot trust or respect Edwards anymore. This is an act of a man who knows that he is losing and will lose.. greg
Yes Sonya, it's a page out of Slicks book. Same old games of the Washington elite. Bush-Clinton, Clinton-Bush. It wasn't an attack, it was stating the truth of what has been going on. Looks like $800,000 being recycled.
When will the American Sheep, called citizens wake up and stop being lead around each election by this political gimmick called Democrat vs Republican.
All politicians are lawyers and all have a stake in oil or big business. The propoganda they both spew out has and always will be designed to keep voters in a constant back and forth mode while they get fat and rich off the backs of the enslaved population. Thats right!! enslaved. The 16th Amendment to The Constitution ended any real true Freedom and Democracy of our great Republic the minute Congress illegally announced it to be so. Even without the proper 3/4 ratification (NOT 2/3 as some believe) but rather the 3/4 of the states ratifying it. The Federal Government in the middle of the night took it upon itself to dispense with participatory government and simply amend The Constitution of The United States thus making economic slaves of us all. This then required that they use the two party system to keep us voting back and forth, left to right and so on and so forth. How do we end this tyranny and ecomonomic terrorism inflicted by these government thugs? It is very simple, put a referendum on the November 2008 ballet calling for the repeal of The 16th Amendment and see how fast our tax and spend (blow your money recklessly) government shrinks to a managable size and then is required to live within it's means.
These career politicians would be in massive financial and power hungry withdrawls and suffer from political D.T's
Then let us elect, not Dumbacrats or Reflublicans to government positions, but real independent centrist Americans like the guy next door to run our country and live like the real free people our founding fathers envisioned for us. Face the truth American SHEEP!! We no longer have a government of the people, by the people or for the people. We have a GOVERNMENT OF THE GOVERNMENT, BY THE GOVERNMENT AND FOR THE GOVERNMENT.
Every one of the financial scandals that the right used to attack Bill Clinton had their origins with Hillary's wheeling and dealing.  She was smart enough and sly enough that the right never could get anything to stick to the Clintons in a court of law  but there was always plenty that didn't pass the smell test.

Dems hate to admit that just like they hate to admit the damage Bill Clinton did with his reckless behavior, right wing conspiracies notwithstanding.  He didn't have to make it so easy for them.  Gore would have won by far too much to lose in a bloodless coup if not for the Clinton impeachment. Period.

As for Hillary Clinton, she has always given the impression of a person whose only standard is what she judges she can get away with rather than what's honest and ethical.  I'm deeply saddened that she seems bound to become my party's nominee for the Presidency and deeply annoyed by those who insist any opposition to Hillary must be because she is a woman or that she is being held to a different standard because she is a woman.  I simply consider her to be without any ethical sense whatsoever, regardless of body parts.  She's a typical business as usual pol whose character doesn't bear too close an examination.
An old saying that rigs true with the Clinton/s...where there is smoke there is fire.  The Clinton/s; and that is what you'll get if you elect Ms. Rodamn-Clinton [remember those days] to our White House is another 4 years of smoke and the American people will have to inhale it. Makes me sick thinking about it. An for the record; I've not yet decided on a candidate. Well ok I have, No to the Cliton/s.

Videos spur resignation of Virginia appointee
By InFocus News Staff and Associated Press

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Esam Omeish, a member of Virginia’s Commission of Immigration resigned on Sept. 27, several hours after Gov. Timothy M. Kaine was told about videos showing the physician making comments that caused controversy.
Omeish, chief of the division of general surgery at INOVA Alexandria Hospital, was among 10 individuals Kaine appointed on Aug. 2 to a 20-member commission formed to study the effects of immigration and federal immigration policies on Virginia.

"Dr. Omeish is a respected physician and community leader, yet I have been made aware of certain statements he has made which concern me," Kaine said in a news release.

In the videos, Omeish accuses Israel of genocide and massacres against Palestinians, and says the "Israeli agenda" controls Congress.

Omeish, who is the national leader of the Muslim American Society, also denounced an invasion of Lebanon by the "Israeli war machine" during an Aug. 12, 2006, rally in Washington.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) extended support to Omeish, saying he stepped down from his post after he was subjected to a "smear campaign" by anti-Islam bloggers who distorted his comments.

"At the same time that we see a respected community leader and physician forced to resign an appointed post, we see national politicians claiming there are too many mosques in America, demanding that the Qur’an not be used to swear in the first Muslim congressman and suggesting that Islamic holy sites be bombed," CAIR said.

"None of these individuals has been forced to step down."

how about a limit on comment length!! IT GETS BOARING!! I too have given up on Edwards and wife.
If you think things are bad under Bush and the Repubs,
just wait'll you get Billary and the Dems!

I can't wait to just sit back and watch them take this
country right into the toilet.
These questionable contributions from poor residents of Chinatown suggest the use of sham donors used as proxies for wealthy donors who have exeeded their limits.  That's the investigation that should be forthcoming.  It's important to know if the Democrats are indeed being hoodwinked by a candidate who could rival the present administration in depths of dishonesty.  These telltail signs should be regarded with acute inspection.  We don't want to suffer from buyer's remorse.

Far from being surprised, if this were found to be the case, I would think that this would be par for the course for her campaign.
Obama '08
Anyone working as hard as she is to buy a vote can not be trusted to run this contry.

When will people learn?
If you really believe Hillary has not flung dirt you are sorely mistaken. The Clinton M.O. is attack by proxy, so they will not be seen as directly wallowing in the mud. Clinton is tight with most of the corporate media head honchos so has complete media support. Even major right winger Rupert Murdoch throws her fundraisers...She is also know to have many paid pollsters, wow what a surprise, manipulation be thy name. It is from the old play book, be seen as above reproach, never come out with a firm stand, have your minions do all your dirty work, put a network in place that supports your inevitablilty, say it often enough and it becomes fact. Wily politicians who support the business as usual politics in DC are not what this country needs right now. We need an advocate for us "we the people"
not an advocate for Corporate America.
A vote for John Edwards is a vote for yourself!
Edwards 08' speaking truth to power and wanna be powerfuls...

Republicans back to the stone age where they are more comfortable?
I would feel comfortable in the stone age.  In the stone age people probably relied on themselves for their own health care,  their own food and shelter.  They probably didn't go hut to hut or cave to cave asking their neighbors to pay for what they were unable to provide for themselves.  I bet in the stone age respectable cave men actually helped those who were really in need of assistance, and didn't help those who were able but lazy.  There is a saftey net for those who need it and it is our moral responsibility to help them, and them alone.  I do not want to be taxed to tears helping the lazy.  Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness....and "free" health care?
Where do the entitlements end with the Democrat Party?
When everyone has the same amount of disposable income?
Let's try a little syllogistic reasoning. That's something that's been sorely lacking the past few years, and I think it would be good to brush up on this technique as we near the critical phase of these primaries.

You know how syllogistic reasoning works. You have:

a major premise (all humans are mortal),
a minor premise (Socrates is a human),
and a conclusion (therefore, Socrates is mortal).

The major and minor premises must be generally accepted, and all must agree that the conclusion can be reasonably inferred by the premises.

Let's try one!

Major premise: Politicians have been corrupted by corporate money and special interest groups.

Minor premise: Hillary Clinton is the only major Democratic candidate to accept money from corporate-sponsored PAC groups, which even Bill refused to do in 1992 and 1996.

Conclusion: Hillary Clinton will end corruption in government.

Is that a reasonable conclusion to draw from those premises?
It is very interesting to read all the different perspectives here. My take on this situation is that John Edwards is the MOST authentic, real, passionate candidate running for the presidency. He is the one who truly cares about what happens to all the people and has concrete plans for America as well as cleaning up Bush's mess.
I don't think pointing out "questionable" fundraising
issues is attacking Hillary. The truth needs to be told and the media has clearly been bought.
The bottom line for the 2008 election absolutely has to be which candidate can win. We must not think about any thing else. It is too critical.
All the polls show John Edwards leads both Hillary and Obama by wide margins against all the Republicans in the general election.
He is not only the best candidate he is the only one who can win.
Why do you suppose the Republicans are so anxious for Hillary to be the nominee?

THAT was Clinton's response????

THAT was Clinton's response????

THAT was Clinton's response????

THAT was Clinton's response????

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA!!!!

They are BEYOND ridiculous! No answers? No accountability?

No explanation of the fraudulent donations?

They are losing it, and it's hilarious.
Do you people honestly think that all the candidates personally see who donates to their campaigns. I am quite sure that if we looked at Edwards,Obama or any of the republicans they all have gotten questionable donations. So far Hillary has been returning the questionable donations if you read articles in media. Are the rest of them doing the same. Mr. Edwards and Obama need to get off this attach mode on anything in the news and focus on their own campaign. They are just giving republicans ammo for general election for the democrat nominee.
I just love it when Hillary Clinton plays this "he said-she said" crap. Let me tell Hillary how it is. LOOK LADY, IF YOU CAN DISH OUT CRAP TO OTHER PEOPLE AND SAY NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT THEM, THEN KEEP YOUR DAMN MOUTH SHUT WHEN THEY STRIKE BACK. YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE CRIMINALS, PERIOD.

Sen. Clinton's campaign identified problems with some of the Chinatown donors on its own after conducting a standard review of the donor list.  The campaign compared the donors' professions with available contribution amounts; if the latter seemed unrealistic in light of the former, the campaign sent out letters asking that donors affirm in writing that the donations were their own.  When some donors didn't respond to requests, their donations were returned.  I don't see what more the campaign could reasonably have been expected to do.  Knock on the door of each donor and interrogate him/her?  Campaigns cannot spend all their time and resources checking out the bona fides of their donors.

The idea that Sen. Clinton will take money from anybody rests on the assumption that she knows which of her tens of thousands of donors are unlawfully donating to her campaign:  this is very unlikely.  I've donated lots of money to her campaign and I've never met, spoken to, or had any personal contact with her or her campaign that would reveal anything beyond the most superficial details of my financial affairs.  To those of you who have donated to Senators Edwards, or Obama, or anybody else, have you ever received a phone call inquiring into your financial situation?  Would you expect to?

The campaign generally knows some sketchy details of the donor's situation, e.g., profession, and it's reasonable to check them against donation amounts, when these are also available, to see if they jibe on a surface level.  This was done at the Chinatown event. (However, such checking won't always yield results.  For example, it may be impossible to locate the source of contributions made by a home-maker who retains her original name, or whose husband does not also contribute to Sen. Clinton's campaign.  Some people save up.  Yet others receive birthday gifts from relatives, NOT for the purpose of donations, and donate these gifts, which have become the donors' own money, etc.)

I have a hard time believing that Sen. Clinton's campaign is the only one with these problems.  As noted above, John Edwards has his own campaign finance problems.  I have no idea what precautions Sen. Edwards or any of the OTHER candidates have taken to prevent fraudulent donations.  But, once the election is over and it no longer matters, I'm sure the MSM will spend some time looking into the finances of the other campaigns.
As a lifelong democrat I gotta say that if Hillary is the nominee I will actually take a look at the republican nominee.  As it stands now I'd vote for Huckabee or Ron Paul over her.  It's time to nominate a democrat that we can be proud of.
I think that Senator Edwards is being led down the wrong campaign path by David Bonoir.mostly phone banking & very little post card ,or letter writting or visibilities being done.I can't even get lawn signs or campaign buttons.I don't think the Senator is aware of this.Mr.Bonior get back to basics of a real traditional campaign
I don't hate Her. I just wish our party would come up with a qualified canidate (not edwards and not OBama)
Cheryl from Mesa Arizona,
You are missing a huge point, you say Edwards is going negative on Clinton and just giving fodder to the GOP. The truth is the GOP can't wait to have Hillary as their opposition. Haven't you been paying attention?
A Clinton running for president will galvinize the Republican base, like Bush activates the Dems. The GOP knows they have to have the easiest candidate to beat to stand a chance. All Edwards is doing is pointing out that fact! And if the Dems don't wake up and realize this soon, there is a very strong chance we could end up with a Republican back in office. Even in this anti GOP climate it CAN happen. Look to the motivation behind the GOP claiming Hillary's inevitability, or the corporate owned media's fawning. If she happens to win the nomination, just wait and see what a Karl Rove backed Republican attack machine will start shooting, and with a Clinton they wont even have to make stuff up, they have so much ammo already.
Take it to the bank, but don't shoot Edwards or Obama for perhaps inartfully bringing that certain truth up!

John Edwards 2008' "The Peoples President" returning our government back to "We the People".
I do not believe in Hillary Clinton.  I am a "yellow dog" democrat, but am disgusted with her transparent hypocrisy. She may not be able to be stopped, as is suggested above.  But if she is not stopped I will have no guilt on board.  I will not vote for her.
