Parsing the FRC straw poll results

The Romney campaign touted its Values Voter Summit straw poll victory after speaking to the group yesterday. Romney won with 27.62% of the vote -- just tenths of a percentage point ahead of Huckabee, who garnered 27.15%. But, as The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder notes, “Of those who were actually at the briefing … Huckabee took more than 50 percent.”

In fact, Huckabee’s on-site support was overwhelming with 488 votes, or 51% to Romney’s 99 supporters or 10% for second. Giuliani had only 60 supporters in person – about 6% of the on-site vote.

The results are perhaps most disappointing for Fred Thompson, who was received warmly and has polled well among conservatives nationally and in South Carolina in particular, but apparently he didn’t get the votes  in this straw poll. Thompson finished with roughly 10% in the online poll and only 8% of the on-site vote.

The results are another strong indicator for Huckabee, but his paltry fund-raising figures have kept conservatives from rallying around him.

Romney actively campaigned for votes urging supporters via e-mail to vote for the former Massachusetts governor. And Giuliani aides were ready to point out the difference between Romney's score on site versus the Internet voting. They also stressed they don’t participate in straw polls -- likely, however, assuming a poor showing. Giuliani used the same tactic for the Aug. 11 Ames straw poll.

snooze-----not one of them would get my vote----bunch of losers
Ron Paul came in 3rd by the way Msnbc, maybe that should have been printed.  Giuliani was at the very bottom of the poll.

Romney only received 99 votes from the Washington Briefing itself. He didn't win the support of value voters -- he just got his existing supporters to vote online for a $1 donation to FRC. Huckabee was only 30 votes behind Romney overall, but trounced him 51% to 10% among the people who actually heard both of them speak. Huckabee owned the straw poll. Romney bought the straw poll. The headline could read, "Romney Win$ FRC Straw Poll"...
Ron Paul finished third with about 15 percent of the vote. Of course MSNBC sees fit to print the names of two candidates who finished lower than Ron Paul. Please remember Journalism 101 in future reports.
Thank you.
It's important to note that the voting on the straw poll started on Friday...BEFORE Giuliani spoke on Sat morning.  Vote first and then rate the speeches?
Romney/Huckabee in '08!
I am a born-again believer, and I JUST DO NOT BELIEVE ANY TRUE CHRISTIAN BELIEVER IN JESUS CHRIST WOULD VOTE FOR A CULTIST, I JUST CANNOT!!! IF THIS MAN IS THE SELECTION FOR THE GOP, I WILL NOT VOTE AT ALL, AND I HAVE MANY FRIENDS WHO FEEL THE SAME WAY - THIS POLL HAS TO BE RIGGED SOMEHOW TO DISCOURAGE THE RIGHT - IT JUST DOES NOT MAKE SENSE - THERE IS NO REASON WHY THIS LIAR, THIS CULTIST, WHO BELONGS TO AN ORGANIZATION OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE CREATED THEIR OWN BIBLE, NOT THE HOLY SCRIPTURES WRITTEN BY DIVINE INTERVENTION,AND DOES NOT BELIEVE THE HOLY TRINITY - THIS IS NOT IN TEACHING WITH THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. WE MOST DEFINITELY ARE IN THE END TIMES, AND SATAN IS DECEIVING THE SMALL-MINDED PEOPLE WHO WILL ALLOW A SHARP-FORKED TONGUE LIKE ROMNEY WHO WAS FOR ALL THESE THINGS HE IS NOW TALKING AGAINST...HE WAS PRO-CHOICE, PRO-HOMOSEXUAL, ETC., ETC., AND NOW, HE HAS FLIP-FLOPPED AGAIN.  YOU PEOPLE WHO VOTED FOR THIS CHARLATAN ARE AS BRAIN-DEAD AS YOU CAN BE!!! WHY DO YOU NOT SWITCH TO THE DEMONCRITICS, THEY DO NOT DENY BEING SATAN FOLLOWERS LIKE THIS WOLF IN SHEEPS CLOTHING!!!
How much money did Romney spend buying votes this time?  We know Huck can no longer do that since the campaign is tight for cash.
With all that money that Romney spent, isn't it unique that Huckabee crushed him with "in person" votes and was only 30 short of on-line votes?  Huckabee is the real deal and the GOP ought to wake up and realize a good thing.
Huckabee only has a chance the votes of the many religious bigots who would never vote for a Mormon, a woman or a black. I think Romney is the best over all package for the religous right but their church leaders won't sell Romney because his LDS Church has no paid ministry and that would hit too close to their pocket book.
LIKE the political leader of the Southern Baptists said we're electing a President of the US... NOT a president of the Southern Baptists...CWC
Again, the Lamestream Media has ignored Ron Paul's strong 3rd place finish....He is the ONLY candidate that can succeed against Hilary by gouging into her anti-war support...NONE of the other Republican candidates can do that...and NONE are economic conservatives either...like Dr.Paul....
Shhh... Make sure you don't mention that Ron Paul came in 3rd.
With Huckabee almost winning against Mitt, we see a major split in an organization that usually coalesced around one candidate by now. It shows that the VALUED VOTERS of the rebumblekins is fractured and unable to come to some agreement. Just another example of the lose of power by the leaders of this group. We will see if they can come together later but it also shows that now the candidates should start to talk to the general election voter now, write off this group or else suffer the consquences. They are not the voters you need in a general election. They will sit out if it is Rudy and Mitt will receive fewer votes than he needs to get elected. If they really support Huckabee, then where is the money and people voicing their support? All I see is struggle in this group to come together and that means they are not a voting block anymore. HOOORAH for DEMOCRACY, the  bulk of americans will speak loud and clear next election, we want a leader who responds to all americans, not just the voting block that carried them in the election.
Folks seem to want to jump on the bandwagon only AFTER their is success - and they don't seem realize they can CREATE success.

Mike Huckabee IS the real deal.  Get onboard and support the best man for the job.  Let's put a man in the White House who says what he means and means what he says.
Ron Paul was third with 15% of the vote.
Thanks for mentioning Ron Paul who placed third......... ??????

So much for Goldwater Republican-wannabes. The 'Guys of the GOP' are moving over to Dubya's 'Home Base', fighting for that 24 per cent. Goldwater (AuH2O for you Elementalists) ran on the slogan, "In Your Heart, You Know He's Right". These Guys are running on, "In Your Heart, You Know I'm Radically Right".
I am not sure it's a good thing that the republicans are relying on a straw vote here. The key word, i think is to wait, for a true front runner to appear
Ron Paul finished third with 15% of the vote.
