Quick Post-Debate Thoughts

Posted: Sunday, October 21, 2007 9:58 PM by Chuck Todd

From NBC's Chuck Todd
It's 74 days until the Iowa caucuses (actually, just under 1800 hours) and clearly all of the major GOP candidates were feeling that pressure at Sunday night's debate. All of them were full of energy and had one-liners and barbs at the ready.  For that reason, I'm having a hard time singling out a winner because everyone in the so-called 1st and 2nd tier was VERY prepared tonight.

The first 25 minutes of the debate was simply red-hot but then, almost as if on cue with the first pitch of Game 7 of the Red Sox-Indians and the kickoff of the Steelers-Broncos game, the debate stopped creating too many newsworthy moments.

Nothing like practice for Thompson. He seemed much more comfortable than at the CNBC/MSNBC/WSJ debate earlier this month.  He got a nice assist from the Fox News folks by having Thompson critiques of Rudy and Romney as the first questions to each of the two supposed frontrunners. And it also gave Thompson a chance to "win" that initial round of the debate.  And then about an hour into the debate, Brit Hume used Thompson's position on entitlement reform as the basis of questions to all of the frontrunners and contrasted them to Thompson in a way that allowed Thompson to look like the brave "bold" leader on the issue.

That said, between Fox News and Giuliani, it seems Thompson was put a bit on the defensive on a few issues, including so-called tort reform, No Child Left Behind and even abortion.  But his energy level was WAY up; suddenly seemed like a candidate who'd been on the trail for a while. His best answer may have been during the bizarre round of anti-Hillary questioning. He didn't try and followup on the cheap shots from his opponents, but instead emphasized the need for the party to nominate someone with core principles. And did we mention he got in the last word? Overall, the Thompson folks should be ecstatic about tonight; it was setup well for him.

Neither Giuliani nor Romney stumbled but it did seem Romney was still slightly dazed from the last debate since he was on the defensive early on in the debate (more so than his chief foes), even from the moderators who asked about his "lawyers" line regarding key military decisions.

Giuliani doesn't seem interested in playing a prevent defense; he had no problem going right after Thompson at one of the Tennessee senator's conservative weak spots: tort reform. In previous debates, Rudy seemed more interested in finding a good one-liner to make a point and try to stay above the fray. Tonight, he showed a more serious, yet biting side that New Yorkers got used to in the '90s. Giuliani is proving to be one of the better pure debaters on stage; he's very good at evading attacks while striking back on another topic and changing the subject.

McCain was once again the sober guy on stage. And he may have gotten off the line of the night, when he took his turn at bashing Hillary over some apparent Woodstock museum. The one-time P.O.W. McCain noted that he didn't attend Woodstock, he was, um, tied up. Everyone roared with laughter. McCain also had one of the toughest zingers I've seen yet in a debate when he said (apparently of Romney but he may have also been targeting Giuliani): "I didn't manage for profit, I led for patriotism."  McCain also showed he's unafraid to show distance from Pres. Bush. His line about seeing into the eyes of Putin just three letters, "K.G.B." was a clear dig at Bush who saw into Putin's "soul." Can you tell McCain's now a candidate with nothing left to lose?

McCain and Huckabee have benefitted in previous debates because the other candidates would duck some questions those two wouldn't. Tonight, because Giuliani, Romney and Thompson were all red hot, McCain and, particularly, Huckabee, had a harder time standing out. This is not good news for Huckabee who needs to stand out via earned media whenever possible since he doesn't have a competitive bankroll.

But overall, this was a debate where every one of the major candidates were on their game and in cases like this, it was hard for anyone to stand out.

BTW, it's now 3-0 Boston in the bottom of the 4th. Back to baseball or football or "Desperate Housewives."

What a bunch of turds.
The like one I'd even consider voting for is Ron Paul.
without a cell phone to send a text message I was unable to vote on who I thought was the winner. So here is my vote, I like John McCain, he is strong and means business in helping the people.  John was the only one to receive a standing ovation from the people there.
I disagree, I watched the debate and it was Mike Huckabee that really stood out as the true winner!
Ummm....and RON PAUL?
Romney had some great lines on Hillary but nobody won the debate.
Well watching the debates I can still say I favor Mitt Romney...only question ...why not more talk about immigration...Seems like Tom Tancrado seems to be the only one who remembers we are in over our heads on our own borders.
I cant believe that the only people mentioned are the so called "front runners" If you are going to provide coverage, provide complete coverage. Try including Dr. Paul next time.
Ron Paul is a neo-hippy, and the Republican party sees right through him.  Ron Paul had the honor of getting booed multiple times for his wing nut positions.  I predict Ron Paul will fail to win the GOP nomination and will have tremendous pressure to run as a 3rd party candidate, which he will do.  He won't win the general election, but he will hand it to someone.
I really liked Rudy, Mitt, and Fred.  This may turn out to be the first election in a long while that I will be able to vote FOR a candidate, instead of trying to choose the lesser of two evils.
I am wondering now, for what reason does msnbc not mention Ron Paul at allin this article, even though he is the only one representing a stark contract to the other candidates on issues of the war in Iraq, taxes, and the way to address social issues such as abortion and gay marriage. Not to mention that he has raised plenty of money.  I can only believe it is intentional censorship.
"Ron Paul is a neo-hippy, and the Republican party sees right through him.  Ron Paul had the honor of getting booed multiple times for his wing nut positions." --Eric, Seattle Wash (Sent Sunday, October 21, 2007 11:30 PM)

Give me a break. His position on the war is in line with over 75% of the American people. Not very "wing-nut" if you ask me. On every other issue, he's the strongest and most consistent Goldwater/Reagan conservative. He was only booed because he was in front of a Republican primary crowd at a Fox News event, which is as "hawkish" (I'd say blindly pro-government in the name of being pro-America is a better description) as you can get.

He wins these text polls precisely because they're NOT limited to GOP primary voters, and the third of the party that is anti-war, many Democrats, independents, and even people who can't vote like his non-interventionist foreign policy message. And just for the record, you CANNOT vote multiple times. I finally tested it tonight, and only because I was tired of Sean Hannity repeating the same tired claim.
Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate who will uphold the constitution. He is a republican like Robert Taft a real conservative. Those who vote for Paul are not wasting their vote. You should always vote for your principles not who the media says is electable. If paul runs independent,he wont the dems and repubs make the rules to keep him off the ballots and keep people from switching parties in primaries,he wont be handing anyone a victory or loss.Paul voters cannot be put into either of the 2 party camps.I wouldnt vote for a dem or Rep at all. If the const party candidate had more visibility Id vote for her.
Dr.Ron Paul won the post debate, text only poll...The people just aren't getting the real facts from the media. But more are becoming informed daily.Vote this year or you may not get to ever again.Register republican to get Ron through the primary. He can win this thing if we get off our duffs, and get out our wallets!
Ron Paul, the other talking GOP heads, or Hillary - pick one. I choose Peace, fiscal sanity, and Ron Paul.
OK, go away Paulies.  Everybody knows Huckabee won the debate...that's what the FOX poll showed afterwards (nobody counts Paul's numbers).  Huckabee will be our next President.  Get on board now guys; you won't regret it.

Voting for anyone but Ron Paul is just asking for four more years on Bush and a war with Iran. As a professor of history, I can clearly see Dr. Paul's messages of foreign policy and their historical linkings.
I loved the pre and post debate comments about Ron Paul.  The guy who called him crazy was right on.  Then they polled the focus group at the end and asked if any of them were impressed by Ron Paul, no one raised their hand and one person laughed.  My roomates were getting a kick out of his answers and one made the comment, "how did this crazy truck driver get on stage".  I hope that loon dosn't run on a third party ticket and hand the white house to hilldawg.
Ron Paul destroys the competition and the media continues to ignore him.
Interesting....
ron paul has good points on foreign policy, but he would get rid of all entitlement programs.as a democrat there is no way i could ever vote for him
.
With the exception of Ron Paul most GOP Rivals Argued who's Most Conservative, Ron Paul As he has before, spoke passionately against the war in Iraq. But he also accused his Republican rivals of being for big government. "Our big-government conservatives, they're part of the neo-conservative movement.

Who won the Orlando, Florida Republican debate?

.
Half the time Ron Paul is in la-la land when it comes to the major issues.  I want to know why he keeps harping that we shouldn't be "nation building" when that's what we did with Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Germany, Poland, Italy and more recently, the Czech Republic, and several other nations that fell out of the Soviet's sphere of incluence.  Our own US of A was assisted in it's "nation building" phase by France, and it's a good thing too, for along came Great Britain in a subsequent war and if the US hadn't had that help from France, it would have been disastrous to the new Union.  So I don't know why Ron Paul suddenly has disavowed this concept, thinking we should only be influential in the commercial area as we export Kentucky Fried Chicken worldwide.  That policy would drive all our allies into the ravenous maw of our enemies, so his is an untenable approach in a very aggressive world.  Vote Ron Paul?  Only if you completely ignore the facts.
Nice Chuck Todd - this shows exactly the problem with America, people like you more interested in saturating their lives with yet more entertainment, instead of focusing on the important - and this is why your Democratic party is controlled heavily by the left and is pointed 20 degrees nose down.

Nice Dem slam ta boot, in indirectly stating you pretty much don't give a damn. Well, we really don't give a damn what you think either. Can't believe I wasted 2 minutes at MSNBC - never again.
They can force-feed us whatever New World Order candidates they wish...my vote will be for Ron Paul.
Romney would be the clear candidate of the Republicans if he wasn't a Mormon.

It is time for the religious bigots to elect the best candidate and quit trying to elect a religion. Last time I checked Mormons were even more conservative then Born Again Christians so what is their beef?

Isn't the name of the Mormon Church, The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints. Oh I see they do not believe in Jesus Christ...well it is in their name. The Mormons are way more conservative then the Catholics and the Methodists these days and I don't see anyone putting them down or saying they are not Christians.
Yeah, this gets so tired.  C'mon at least mention where Paul won the cell poll hands down [again] and Hannity railed against it [again] . . . you might even comment on how FOX tried to portray Ron as "Colmes candidate" lol.  Hannity practically refused to share the same airspace with the man.  Heck you could even actually mention one or two of his debate responses like the one where he deftly pointed out the difference between him and Clinton [Hillary is *for* indefinite engagements in the Middle East and the unhelpful assaults on our civil liberties and voted accordingly just for starters whereas Paul is the polar opposite on these and *most* other issues].  Paul is the only candidate from either major party to clearly understand and articulate these and many other traditionally conservative positions.
I don't even know why Republicans are running for election. They've ignored their constituients for so long I will be amazed if a Republican gets re-elected to Congress, much less President! They're so funny, LOL.
All you Ron Paul supporters should stop embarrassing yourselves as you state he won.  Please.  What a common Ron Paul supporter response.  I'm sick of you guys.
Go Ron Paul! I get sicker every day at this media and government clamp down! Not all of us are sheep you know. I saw the Big Pharma ads punctuating the debate. I know who pays for Fox's padded pockets. I am a normal conservative Republican from South Carolina, a working professional - I support Ron Paul! And you, the media, fail to mention him once again - even after once he again he wins your text vote?????? If you do not believe in your own text vote, why even bother with the pretense of having one. Go Ron Paul!!

No one has polled me - I support Ron Paul!
Maybe Im reading too much into this, but from the post debate interview it sounded like Ron Paul may be open to running in a third party, as the candidate of the Unity Party. Im basing that on him suggesting that he would endorse a third party, but that he wouldnt endorse the republican, and the fact that he's sort of an ousider in his own party... I dunno, Im reading alot into that little comment he made, but its seems very possible.
Hillary Clinton won the debate, hands down.
From what I have seen, they have no ideal how to run this country, they are nothing but WARMONGERS filled with hate and idiocy, I have never met an islamic person that i didnt like, or couldnt get along with, its the media and the government that portray them as an enemy, let me just state this, if another country attacked us for no reason, killing our women and childern, and looting our oil reserves, THEN I GUESS I WOULD BE CALLED A TERRORIST OR AN INSURGANT, BECAUSE I WOULD FIGHT TO THE LAST BREATH IN ME... we should never have went to war with iraq, they didnt do anything to us, therefor our troops should be brought home NOW,,,and procedings to impeach brought up NOW,,Ron Paul is the only choice the repubs have, and it still a lousy choice,,,,,,,,,..
Reading all the e-mails in this post shows me that the elephant is losing badly with it's own voters. If the candidates are spending so much time trying to prove who has the credentials, they are wasting valuable time bringing independant voters into the fold. This will be a rout unless they start talking about what they would do as president. "Hey Vote for me, I have the biggest flag tattoo on my butt." What we are seeing is a major realignment of the party, maybe that will be the most positive thing coming out of this election.
It seems that Gov. Huckabee is a constant and steady option in these debates.  He does not duck questions and seems to be pretty competent on most of the issues.  If he can be a force in Iowa, he may have an outside shot at this thing.
Romney is honest.  Romney is capable.  Romney is decent.  Romney is brilliant.  Romney is together.  Romney has a proven track record in business and state government.  Some people hate that in a candidate, but I don't.  :)

He is being abused and lied about by some candidates past the point of acceptability, it is making me nauseous and Republicans are losing my sympathies fast.  Same old tricks they've always pulled, haven't changed A BIT.
If elected I promise to.

1. take our troops out of iraq immedatly, redeploy them in afganastan and pakistan, to catch the real terrorists.

2. Make a formal apology to the american and iraqi people, and  put laws in place to make sure this don't happen again.

3. To tackle the real issues that have put us and our planet on the endangered list, namely national security, it seems that some groups exist within national security that have had no oversight by our elected officals in 50 some odd years, it seems they have hyjacked our future by suppressing technologies that coud have done away with gas and eletric companys many years ago (overunity and water technologies), I will bring these and many more wonderful technologies (anti-gravity),out in the open, they belong to the taxpayers, and put laws in place to make sure it don't happen again, and again apologize to the people.

4. Sit down with congress and draw up laws to mandate that every car that comes off the assembly line or into this country be running off water or overunity within the next 4 years, and every other automobil be fitted with these within the next 8 , or they will not be on our roads, and I do mean our roads, the sale of our roads will stop immedatly, you will not be paying tolls on roads that you paid for.

5. We will do away with the federal reserve, and return to the gold standard.

6. Since we are elected by the people for the people, we will immedatly put laws in place to stop all campain contrabutions and perks by any and all companys private and commercial, only people will be allowed to donate to the candadates.

7.to restore the truth in our government, by revealing the truth about aliens, be it good or bad, you have the right to know..and there are many other things that need done also...

so are you ready to change the world?

!!VOTE FOR TRUTH!!
Huckabee isn't wining anything.  Do we need to talk about his fundraising?  The guy is broke and won't make it much longer!  There is no way a pro-war person - like Giuliani, Romney, and Huckabee - will EVER win a bid for President!  If Ron Paul doesn't win the GOP nod the Republicans lose to the dem voters!  I, along with many others, will NEVER vote for nation builders or warmongers!

You warmongering neo-con's can speak bad about Ron Paul all you want, he's still doing very well in fundraising and everyday receives new supporters.  We will make this happen without mainstream media!  Just watch us!

BTW- I was disguisted watching the Fox debate.  It was so obvious that they planted anti-Ron Paul people in the audience.  Many Americans see right though that blatent attempt to silence the Ron Paul movement.

When Ron Paul states his Anti-War position - something 70% of Americans agree with - and you hear boo's you know it's a Fox event you're watching!
ron paul.......HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. WHAT A CLOWN. why even go through this nonesense? anyone with half a brain knows its going to be guiliani. and then he'll kick that socialists pig clintons ugly fat ass. muaaaaaaaaaa
Hucklebury, I mean Huckabee...come on...I mean we broke it...we should fix it. What a flawed analogy. Since when did the IRAQ war become an inanimate object? And another thing...Rudy, Thompson, Rommey, and McCain are all over-rated.

Lawyers are professional liars, and so are the clergy. Doctors save lives. Enough said.
Re: Everyday's comments.  Yes, Mitt Romney is a Morman, but I would take his values over Ted Kennedy's any day.  In fact, I take him over most of the so-called Catholic politicians.  He shines above them.

No matter what you think, Mitt is the best Candidate who can conserve the  Americans'values. With Mitt we have hope.
