Last night's debate (R)

Posted: Monday, October 22, 2007 9:18 AM by Mark Murray

The Boston Globe’s lead: "The eight Republican candidates for president held a fiery debate last night filled with charges and confrontations about who is a true conservative and "real Republican" as they defended their stands on issues such as abortion, gay marriage, and taxes."

The Los Angeles Times headlines the Thompson-Giuliani skirmishes. And it adds, "With groans and cheers, more than 3,000 spectators in the convention hall punctuated the scrappy back-and-forth among the candidates."

The New York Times: “The debate stood out for the intensity and personal nature of the exchanges, as Republicans tried to distinguish themselves — a tactic that risked highlighting the unhappiness among conservatives with much of the field.”

USA Today adds that the GOP hopefuls “clashed Sunday over one of their party's most basic questions: Who is the most conservative? Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee cited their conservative executive experience, while John McCain and Fred Thompson touted conservative Senate voting records — and all took shots at the presumed Democratic frontrunner.”

The Wall Street Journal: “Indeed, much of the debate was devoted to how the candidates would go about defeating Mrs. Clinton, a Democratic presidential candidate who currently holds a commanding lead in national and early voting state polls.”

The New York Post calls Clinton the “‘roast’ of the town.”

Fred Thompson stood out to the Politico's Martin: "Thompson, showing a degree of passion unseen in his first debate appearance two weeks ago, offered perhaps the toughest charges of the night."

The Des Moines Register’s David Yepsen writes, “McCain had the best night. Rudy Giuliani also turned in a good performance and newcomer Fred Thompson did much better than he did in his first gabfest.” The debate “was especially unlikely to have much impact in New Hampshire, which is big Red Sox territory and where most televisions probably weren’t tuned to politics Sunday night.”

And an interesting take on Ron Paul: “Paul isn’t likely to win any of the Republican primaries and caucuses but his message resonates with mainstream voters or Democrats who aren’t rank and file GOP activists. They laugh and hoot at his messages now but come November, if the GOP loses the White House, many Republicans will be saying they should have paid attention to what the man was saying about U.S. military policy, civil liberties and spending.”

So did Fox News win many Democratic friends last night by having a segment that allowed the GOP candidates to take cheap shot after cheap shot at Clinton? That said, the segment only seemed to further the impression of the inevitability of her campaign. As the New York Times pointed out: "This debate makes it official: It’s open season on Hillary Clinton… The amount of time devoted to Mrs. Clinton makes it clear that the Republicans both want her to be the Democratic nominee and think she will be the nominee."

NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy notes that in the post-debate, there were several converts in the crowd who were won over by Fred’s surprising energy. But there were plenty of others who were merely encouraged to “lean” in Thompson’s direction after a performance in which he showed more energy than ever before.

We have heard the liar, all the election promises, the Media is having a feeding frenzy each time one of these people open their mouth.

Sad fact is ,not one time has any critical issue been addressed. All These Washington paper Hangers stay far and clear of fact!  We have seen the flipping and flopping, finger pointing and down right lunatic ideas. Personal ear marked Bonds, plug that loop hole , mask that situation, table illeal entry into this country, sell off of our ports, trucking industry turned over to the Mexican, community services crushed, public medical services over loaded by those who are a illegaly in this country, education over run by the illegals, Every word of english transulated to Mexican. This list has not an end, but you can bet the Washington Paper hanger can't and will not represent the position of the people who sent them to Washington!!!!
Nothing could be more clear to the citizens of the United States of America.  Only four candidates have a conservative track record: John McCain, Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson, and Ron Paul.  Of those four, only two have a steadfast belief system that shows in their record: Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul. Only one will end our unconstitutional invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq, South Korea, and illegal military bases all over the world: RON PAUL.  WAKE UP REPUBLICANS: Dr. Paul is the true conservative that will change our country's crash course with currency devaluation, loss of integrity, and a loss of national sovereignty.  He will ensure constitutional liberty, meaningful and humane border security, completely user driven healthcare, and sensible trade without a national deficit.  He is a balanced man with morals, a historic tack record of principles, and someone we should all look up to in a similar category as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Abraham Lincoln.

As for FOX news (joke) and CNBC of your censorship of Ron Pauls winning poll numbers, you do your country a complete disservice.  For this you will lose your conservative voice and audience.  Your credibility has been spent with economic pandering, selective censorship, and a true lack of journalistic integrity.  You have disgraced yourselves.  You should be ashamed.  Especially for stacking the audience, tainting your own poll, and silencing a true American hero. Out of complete freedom of conservative American choice I CHOOSE Dr.RON PAUL.

SAR-Illinois
ron paul is the only canddate in either party that stands out. stop being an empire and America first! george washington on leaving office warned us, "steer clear of foreign entanglements." boy did we stray far from that good advice!
Are any of the republicans posting on this site living in the same country I am?  Wall Street may be doing better since Bush took office but main street is going downhill fast. I know my family is much worse off today than we were 8 years ago. Go democrats! There isn't a republican candidate that can turn this country around.
Obama is by far the best candidate. He was intelligent and thoughtful in last night's debate as he always is.
Particularly his point about Senator Clinton wanting it both ways is correct. She wants to run as the most qualified but refuses to turn over pertinent information about her time as First Lady. Can't be both ways. All this talk about 'men ganging up on Hillary'? Ridiculous.

As the old saying goes if you can't take the heat keep out of the kitchen. Again wanting it both ways. Tough enough to be President but don't 'gang up' on her by making deliberate arguments that contridict or oppose her? Nonsense! Downright embarrassing as a woman frankly (and I am one!) She should be running on her character, experience and beliefs, not falling back on 'oh, poor Hillary, they are beating up on her'! BAH!!! Sickening.

I will be voting for Senator Obama.
The only way a Democrat is going to become President,is if they come together and quit putting down this great country and causing the deaths of the brave men and women fighting for their freedoms. And for the Drivers License for the illegals....it is a privlege to drive not an political guesture....Hillary Clinto should be ashamed of herself for even thinking that it may be ok to start with....and for everyone that thinks that she was being attacked.....I guarantee you....if she was to act like she did last night when some other country attacks our country.....WE ARE DOOMED.....This is the greatest country in the world and our elected officials are making us look like a joke.....Rep & Dem need to stop fighting like little kids and quit stealing our fellow americans lunch money and grow up. To be honest...maybe we need to start this whole thing over again with differant candidates...The ones we have right now have not grown up yet. I have served in 2 branchs of service and here we are listeing to men and women that has never spent as day in the service saying that we are losing the war...wake up...people die in war...more people are dying in this country every day by starvation,by illegals,drugs,etc....what have you done to help that...Answer: NOTHING
You all are to busy running for office. I believe that while you are an elected official serving our country, you should not be able to run for office...you are being paid to do a job....not being paid to run for office....Let's clean this mess up and quit stealing from the tax payers of this great nation.
