Fred’s immigration roll out

Posted: Tuesday, October 23, 2007 1:22 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
NAPLES, FL -- Fred Thompson met with the sheriff of Collier County Florida today and rolled out a new anti-illegal immigration policy initiative that focuses on seven main policy points: 1) No amnesty; 2) Attrition through enforcement; 3) Increased enforcement of current laws; 4) Reduced incentives from jobs; 5) Bolster border security; 6) Increased prosecution; and 7) Rigorous entry and exit regulation.

Collier County is the only county in Southwest Florida to have its deputies trained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to allow them to serve as local immigration and deportation agents. After a quick briefing on the county’s program, which Thompson said should serve as a “model” for counties across the country, the former senator focused on how best to enforce current immigration laws.

At the center of Thompson’s immigration proposal is a crackdown on sanctuary cities, about which he said, “Some of our cities in this country, for their own individual reasons and notions, have basically said to their locals, ‘You can’t cooperate with federal authorities. If you run across illegal aliens, you cannot cooperate with [the federal government], you cannot reveal them to federal authorities.’ That’s wrong.

“I propose that we cut off some discretionary funding to those cities. If you’re going to do that, you’re not going to do it with federal money. As far as colleges and universities are concerned, part of the law is that you may not induce people to come in illegally and become part of the university by giving them in-state tuition treatment, unless you give it to everybody else, which of course nobody does. But they continue to do so. There are discretionary funds there that need to be cut off from colleges and universities that insist on violating the law.”

At the same time that Thompson was describing his immigration proposal, Giuliani’s communications director Katie Levinson released a statement criticizing the former senator for casting a vote against stricter employment verification laws:

“Where was Fred Thompson when he had the chance to tackle illegal immigration and fix a broken system? He was voting against $1 billion to combat illegal immigration at the borders, against stricter employment verification and for giving illegal immigrants more benefits than we give legal immigrants. That’s not consistent or Conservative.”

Thompson campaign spokesman Jeff Sadosky noted that the bill in question only had support from two Republicans in the Senate because many saw it as a stepping-stone to a national ID law. “[Giuliani] is basically criticizing us for being Republican,” Sadosky said, “once again aligning himself with Senate Democrats.”

Thompson, who has been vocal in criticizing Giuliani about his court case against a 1996 sanctuary city bill, took another jab at the mayor today while speaking to reporters following this morning's event.

“In 1996, we passed a bill while I was in the senate that outlawed sanctuary cities,” Thompson said. “Mayor Giuliani went to court to defeat that law, and unfortunately he won. But there are still, across the country now, many sanctuary cities, which are in violation of the law. I just don’t think they ought to be able to do that with federal money.

“I think that my record speaks for itself. A lot of [the GOP candidates] are saying the same things now. The mayor, his position has been consistent in support of the idea of sanctuary cities. A lot of people are saying otherwise now, but I’ve always basically been where I’ve been on my issues.”

In response to the criticisms of the Giuliani campaign, Thompson said the bill in question, “was a pilot program at the time, it was constructed in a way that several of us, most Republicans actually, were a little concerned about a national ID system. The technology was not there. We’ve come a long way since then, and of course 9/11 has happened since then. So I think it’s time that we had a system, like the one they call the eVerify system, where employers can very quickly determine whether or not somebody applying for a job is legal.”

How many can fit in his old red pickup ?
Not impressed with Collier County's tough immigration stance, and having left Naples in 2002 after LIVING there for five years, and going back and forth to see my daughter, I see the same thing there I see on the East Coast of Florida...no end in sight to the multitudes coming in to find work in SW and SE Florida.
if you run accross illegal aliens you should be able to citizen's arrest them and take them to the nearest police department who should be able to hand them over to INS and get deported on the spot!
Well, I see a lot of big talk on immigration from the republicans, but how do they actually think they are going to get anything accomplished on the issue?  Unless they can promise action, our system will remain the same, old and broken.
Fred who? Fred is dead.
I am all for his illegal immigration plan...They are not citizens here, they came here illegally, they drain the public education resources, ILLEGALLY being the keyword here... I would be more than happy to welcome any immigrant from any country as long as they apply to enter the country with the correct paper work and follow our country's rules, pay taxes and learn to speak English, that is the language of this country and if the dumba** liberals had any intelligence they would vote to make it our official language, as well it should be, hey you want to speak spanish, tagalo, chinese, italian, whatever in your home with your family fine, but when you come to society, to the mall, the hospital, you damn well should speak the language of our country, do you think any of these countries have signs in english in their hospitals, etc..nope you buy a whatever to english dictionary and figure it out...THE IMMIGRANTS NEED TO ACCLIMATE TO OUR RULES, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND, IF THEY WANT TO LIVE IN A LAND WHERE ALL THEIR CULTURES ARE OBSERVED AND THEIR LANGUAGE IS SPOKEN GREAT G O  B A C K!!!! IF IT WAS SO WONDERFUL THERE WHY THE HELL DID YA LEAVE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Is there any call for more inspectors to turn out the illegals?  Is there any planned money for a wall on the Mexico boarder?  Where is the money that we will be spending on this coming from?  Would there be any plan to see if the unemployed and the under employed (as well as the homeless that aren't totally lost - drug addicts or mentally ill) would be willing to take the farm jobs among others that many of the illegals take?
Is the Republican party trying to ensure a Democratic victory in 08? Why would anyone go to Florida and bash immigrants. How absurd is that?  The fastest growing minority in this country, galvazined by perceived and real threats to their well being - and voting in record numbers.  Bush barely won with 40% of the Hispanic vote. Guliani is the only candidate (and maybe John McCain) who stands a chance with this enormously motivated electorate. Fred Thompson bashing immigrants in FL - that rivals his Everglade faux pas.
Fred Thompson's views on anything---so what?
Deport 12 million at a cost of $1,000.00 per person. That does not account for ICE salaries and funding, court cost and lost revenue.
he needs to read this http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/09/12/deportation.cost/index.html

The estimated cost to deport 12 million people 94 billion ICE budget 35 million.
Announce that all persons in the U.S. illegally have a grace perion of 90 days to record their departure from the U.S. and return to their country of origin.  Anyone caught after 90 days will be deported and all assets accumulated here will be confiscated.  They must take all their children with them.  Anyone returning after deportation (willing or forced)will be executed.
What such NONSENSE!!! And that will FIX the problem right Sen. Thompson??? No wonder why the AIR is leaking out of your ballon.
Whaaat, no fence/wall in Fred's plan? He can't be a true Republican.
Fred Thompson is so ignorant about inmigration, remember the pilgrims were ilegals too, the only real americans were the indians were killed by the british pirates, and I want to see Fred Thompson picking potatoes, grapes, oranges, tomatoes, onions in the fields of California, Texas, Florida,Idaho, etc he could not stay there 1 hour and the people in the farms are all mexicans and hispanics hard working people, go to the fields to see them working and anyone seen them doing so will bless his hands and sacrifice. As the americans farmers owner who does the hard work, if this atrocities will be in the future will be paying $ 5.00 for an orange, letuce or peach. Fred you are like Hitler with the jewish.
Politicians are on the breaking edge of find a loophole from which they can garner supporters/voters. The Dems are not direct as opposed to Giuliani, (McCain and Malacki-most honest), Romney and others. fred Thompson has found that loophole and would mostl doubtedly impressed and pull a host of middle and lower strata class voters. Would he be a challenge? Most likely and many would follow in his footsteps.

I agree with Howard REED .THAT SUCKING SOUND YOU HEAR IS BILLIONS BEING SENT TO MEXICO FOR A SMALL FEE!then the criminal invading force destoys our health care and infrastructure by having free access with no I.D.Bug off you bleeding hearts or adopt them.
I would gladly pay five dollars a peach, orange or lettuce head if all the illegals were gone. Heck yes! There would be no trash thrown in the streets, no panhandling and no "workers" standing around on every corner. No corn/snocone sales people making it look like a third world country. I would pay ten dollars!!!!!
Hey, I thought conservative Republicans (is there any other kind) hated Hollywood. Oh that's right, I forgot that rightwingnuts have been sucking at the teat of addled Hollywood types like Ronald Reagan, Chuck "give me a gun" Heston and Thompson for years while whining about the intrusion of Hollywood into politics. What a bunch of hypocritical boobs.
Fred is incredibly ugly. That does make a difference you know.Yucko!Americans wont stand for a horribly ugly president.
So, why is the House and Senate Speakers so worried about what a talk show host says when they them selves act, talk and propractuite Anti- United Satates LAWS, SECURITY and BETRAYED THE LIFE AND TRUST OF THE UNITED STATES CITIZEN. THEY SHOULD BE HANGED FOR TREASON. As for Fred Thompson, I think he could give the order to try these TRADERS OF THIS COUNTRY. Oh yea, spend the money to ENFORCE THE LAWS ON THE BOOK instead of the FREE HEALTH CARE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES. I DON'T CARE WHO WINS THIS ELECTION AS LONG AS IT IS NOT A SOCIALEST, A COMMUNIEST, OR A PERSON WHO THINKS if we are nice people, they will like us.
THE WORLD DOES NOT LIKE US AND HAS NOT LIKED US FOR A VERY LONG TIME. SO GET OVER IT.
Before you show your IGNORANCE on issues you know nothing about at least get educated on them :)

A commentary by immigration activist Arturo E. Ocampo.

In the 20-plus years I have spent studying, lecturing and litigating immigration issues, two things have always amazed me. The first is the amount and intensity of hate spewed against undocumented workers. The second is the amount of misinformation that is published about them.

On this second point, the quote from Mark Twain is illustrative. "A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." I suppose this may be true in part because misinformation, like a lie, requires no accuracy, validation or research; all of which are time-consuming practices.

The recent letters alleging that all undocumented workers are "criminals," and specifically Veronica Suarez, whose plight was written about in the Tracy Press recently, is a criminal are factually incorrect.

According to the facts (as stated in Sharon Franceschi’s Sept. 7 commentary) Saurez entered the U.S. on a valid visa, overstayed her visa when it expired, resulting in her unlawful immigration status. None of these acts, as stated by Franceschi, constitute a crime under federal or state law. Overstaying a valid visa under the Immigration and Naturalization Act is a civil violation of the law, not a criminal violation. Being in the U.S. in under undocumented status is not a criminal violation, but a civil violation of the INA.

The facts, as stated by Franceschi, do not indicate that Suarez has committed any crime. To call her a criminal is erroneous at best, and libelous at worst.

Furthermore, it is an Americanism that a person is innocent until proven guilty. So until Suarez (or any other undocumented person) is charged and found guilty of a crime, it would be inappropriate to call them "criminals."

It is important to note that there is a very large difference between civil and criminal violations of law. The distinction is so important that the law makes the erroneous allegation that one has committed a crime of slander or libel, (which means liability is automatic even without proof of damages). One who violates the civil law is no more a criminal than someone who has breached a contract or accidentally damaged another’s property.

It is true that entering the United States without inspection is a misdemeanor under the INA. The misdemeanor is completed once an individual’s entry is complete. Suarez, according to Franceschi, did not enter without inspection; she entered with a valid visa. According to U.S. Immigration and Citizenship Services statistics, about 40 percent of undocumented persons enter legally and overstay their visas (which, as stated above, is not a crime). Consequently, at least 40 percent of the undocumented population has committed no crime in regards to their immigration status.

Therefore, one cannot assume that a person has committed a crime simply because they are undocumented.

Franceschi is also in error in her allegation that getting married and having children while being undocumented in the U.S. is a violation of the law. It is not. Franceschi goes on to say that Suarez "apparently bought a house illegally." It is unlikely that Franceschi knows exactly how Suarez purchased her home. Consequently, any allegation of illegality is, at a minimum, irresponsible.

It is also important to note that the Immigration and Citizenship Services doesn’t consider all undocumented persons criminals. When the Immigration and Citizenship Services publishes information about its enforcement activities involving undocumented workers, it are always sure to make a distinction between "criminal" and noncriminal aliens.

Another myth is that the term "illegal aliens" is a term of art or is legal jargon. This term is not found anywhere in the INA or in Blacks Law Dictionary. The INA refers to undocumented persons as either an EWI (entered without inspection) or as someone who has overstayed their visa. "Illegal aliens" is a term invented by anti-immigrant groups designed to put undocumented persons in the worst possible light and to instill fear in Americans. It is intentionally designed to associate undocumented persons with criminality.

This xenophobic view that undocumented persons are "simply criminals" comes from the historical stereotype that the foreign-born, especially undocumented immigrants, are responsible for higher crime rates. This misconception has deep roots in American public opinion and popular myth. This myth, however, is not supported empirically and has repeatedly been refuted by scientific studies. Both contemporary and historical data, (including U.S. governmental studies) have shown that immigration is associated with lower crime rates.

The studies have uniformly shown that recent immigrants (including the undocumented) are less likely to be involved in violent crime, and that when there is an increase in immigration patterns, violent crime decreases. This has been shown to be true in large cities with heavy immigrant populations.

In the most recent of these studies, The Myth of Immigrant Criminality and the Paradox of Assimilation (2007), from the Immigrant Policy Institute, it was found that among men age 18 to 39 (who are the vast majority of inmates in federal and state prisons and local jails), immigrants were five times less likely to be incarcerated than the native-born in 2000.

During the Proposition 187 debate, then-Gov. Pete Wilson published statistics that stated that
12 percent to 15 percent of the state prison population had Immigration and Citizenship Services holds or potential holds. The Department of Corrections analyst who compiled these numbers said Immigration and Citizenship Services holds are placed on inmates who were born outside of the U.S. (therefore 12 percent to 15 percent of the prison population was immigrants). The immigrant population at the time in California hovered at about 25 percent, showing immigrants were much less likely to be incarcerated than the native born in California.

In short, the data shows you are much safer if your neighbor is an immigrant.

Franceschi owes Suarez an apology. I am also surprised that the Tracy Press allowed a commentary to run without checking the facts. Although commentaries are designed to allow for the expression of differing opinions, the First Amendment is not as generous with misstatements of facts — especially when the facts can be libelous.

For the immigration debate to be a healthy one, we should strive for a debate based on facts, not myth or tired stereotypes. We should also not let our position on this topic strip us of one of the great qualities we possess as people — the ability to be compassionate.

humans have migrated since they appeared in Africa, now politicians want to stop it?
I'm a Liberal, but I think Thompson's plan for dealing with illegal immigration sounds plausible.  I would like to know how he plans to pay for it.
Perhaps Fred is realistic about the border fence (virtually impossible at any cost in parts of the Arizona and California deserts).  Employment enforcement would be the most effective but very, very costly and the pro-business republicans don't want it.  Some people may say they will pay $ 5.00 for a peach,   but most people would complain about the cost and U.S. agriculture would surely die.
Here is a great idea, let them all in the military and then they can fight for their adopted country in another hot country with lots of sand. We can get all kinds of 'brown people' to kill each other and then this will be the GREAT WHITE BREAD country that the repukes wanted all along. Freds idea is words with out anything to back it up. He is slowly melting like the witch in the wizard of oz and we will see no more of him after Iowa. he has already lost.
I would like to know how he plans to pay for it.
gayle, atlanta, ga
-- it will pay for itself, just like the Iraq war and tax cuts for the rich.  Here is how it could pay for itself.  Without illegals to drive wages down, many Americans will get a pay raise and pay more taxes which will pay for the program.  There is also all of those fines on businesses when the laws are enforced.
Why not just enforce a no freebies--ie. no benefits paid for by the US Taxpayer and no birthright citizenship and take the incentives away.  Sure some will stay and work for cash illegally but with no prospects for citizenship and no free lunch, the 'big prize' is no longer there.  We can then continue to admit new immigrants via our legal processes and they would pay into our system and be eligible for the benefits as well.  I think this is pretty much what Ron Paul has been saying all along  He is particularly adamant about the birthright citizenship issue--but perhaps that comes froom working as a Texas obstetrician for so many years.  This is a slow answer to the problem, but it doesn't cost us millions to implement and it isn't so confrontational as deportation.  It just removes the "why"
Sounds like a great plan to me.  The illegal invasion is second only to the war in Iraq for me.
We need an exit plan out of Iraq and it sounds like Thompson has a good exit plan for illegals.

DIP's (Democratic Illegal Party) is going to lose the election in 2008 over the illegal immigration issue. All polls, consistently, have between 70 -95% of Americans against amnesty and for deportation. This is my conclusion, a 20 plus year ex Democrat, now former Democrat, due to DIPs position on illegal immigration.

Fred has the best program for dealing with the illegal invastion. Enforce our laws and attrition will cause self deportation. In Prince Williams County, VA, Arizona, and OK, all they had to do was pass a restrictive law, and even before the law was ineffect, the illegals started self deporting in droves.

Cost? The DIPs just passed a bill Bush has vetoed for kids health insurance that included a 3.7 billion year subsidy for illegals to get coverage. Do away with all the strictly non emergency health saving medical benefits, to illegals and there will be alot of money around. California spends 10.4 billion a year on subsidies to illegals.

No subsidized living. No jobs. No sanctuary cities to protect you from the law. Few benefits. Rules that ensure that you follow American living standards in terms of occupancy per residence. They leave. Maybe even the government could start sending the IRS after these people who don't pay taxes!

DIP  has abandoned Americans and its policies now are geared to benefit illegals while harming low and middle class Americans. They want amnesty for illegals who take Americans jobs and depress wages. Every piece of legistation seems to have their added clause to hive billions upon billions of Americans taxpayer money to the criminal aliens, for no good reason. If there is amnesty, guess who will have to pay increased taxes to pay for their unfunded entitlements? No, not the illegals, they don't make enough. That is right, Americans foot the bill again. What do Americans get out of this? Crumbling infrastructure. Over crowded terrible schools, no medical insurance, high infant mortality rate, invasion of 40 or 40 more million illegals, decline of our univeristies, loss of access to financial aid for college..etc.. etc.. etc.But DIP wants to increase the Hispanic vote, and the number of Hispanics in America, at whatever cost to the country; a truly racist goal.

Neo cons want dishonest business to reap windfall profits. They both want to dissolve the USA into a North American Union. See stopnorthamericanunion.com.
Americans are fighting to take our country back from these dishonest, corrupt people.

How to easily deport:

Why is it illegal for an American to find out from the Social Security Administration whether their OWN or their children’s Social Security Number is being used by someone else?

If all Americans could, as a preventive measure, periodically check their SSN, not just after they have discovered their credit has been ruined, and they have been stuck with illegals bills, and taxes, and have lost some of their own SS benefits, then:

1. Americans could proactively protect their and their kids' credit and finances from identify theft.
2. Illegals would be quickly discovered, and could be prosecuted and deported by ICE.
3. Most of the alleged mistakes in the SSN database would soon be corrected.
4. There would be far fewer "mismatch" letters for business to deal with.
5. For those SSNs that are fictitious, SSA could be held accountable for advising ICE, again reducing the burden on business.

Easy. But dishonest business wants taxpayer subsidized cheap labor, and politicians want the business PAC money. So Americans have to raise the roof and get this authority. Call your Senators, Congressmen and even state reps and DEMAND a change in the law!
Isn't our own SSN ours?

ALERT! URGENT.. DIPs and NEO CONS ARE PUSHING THE DREAM ACT AGAIN TODAY. CALL/EMAIL/ FAX IMMEDIATELY. THIS TIME, NO AGE LIMIT, AMNESTY FOR ALL. THIS TIME THEY ADDED IN AGAIN THE PROVISION TO TAKE COLLEGE AID AWAY FROM LOW INCOME AMERICAN KIDS AND GIVE IT TO ILLEGALS.

DIPs it seems want most the slots for immigrants to America to go to Hispanics...., like the rest of American from all different races and ethnic backgrounds no longer count.  DIPs action show it has now become American's racist party.  La Raza/MECHa .. motto " Everything for our race, nothing for others", with their take over the USA, and either kick non hispanics out or engage in racial genocide against them, are THE NUMBER ONE RACISTS. Hilliary's outreach director for Hispanics is an ex-head of La Raza.  Check out their college web sites which have not yet been sanitized for public consumption since La Raza has gone to DC. They read like some race purity idea from Hitler.

Democrats are not what they use to be.
Neo Cons are not conservatives.

Fred Thompson is looking pretty good.
The single thing that caused the most out cry from Americans from both parties, was the immigration bill last year. Remember the President supported it along with most Democrats. He (the President) was unable to get it through congress due to his own parties objections. I really believe that to the majority of voters (legal) this is a big big issue. The Democrats and most of the Republicans are afraid to really bring it up. They are afraid to anger the several special intrest groups that oppose any real action. What Thompson is counting on is that the rank and file Americans (the silent majority)have had enough. The politicians have time and time again ran over this group to quiet the vocal minority. Its the squeaky wheel syndrome. This is an issue that will cross party lines. Alot of people are getting tired of laws made to be politically correct. It concerns union workers (Dem) as well as evangelicals (Rep) White, Black, Asian, Native Americans. People are fed up. It is possible that it will have a huge affect on the next two elections. Remember the people on this blog as a whole is not representitive of the public at large. I don't know maybe I'm right or maybe i'm wrong but it is something to concider.....
Fred's plan does address the borders.  Here is his full plan:

Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Plan Released
Posted on October 23rd, 2007

In previous commentaries Fred has mentioned the need to secure our borders and uphold the rule of law. In “The Importance of Border Security” he wrote,

You can’t have national security without border security. It’s not only necessary for any meaningful immigration reform; border security plays a key role in both the interdiction of illegal drugs and in defending America against terrorist threats. Weak borders allow terrorists and smugglers, as well as millions of illegal aliens, easy entrance to the United States. Unfortunately, it’s not at all clear our government is committed to its first responsibility: the protection of our borders.

Today, Fred has released his Border Security and Immigration Reform Plan.

These are the highlights:

No Amnesty. Amnesty undermines U.S. law and policy, rewards bad behavior, and is unfair to the millions of immigrants who follow the law and are awaiting legal entry into the United States.
Attrition through Enforcement. Adding “at least 25,000 agents” to the Border Patrol and doubling the number of ICE agents.
Enforce Existing Federal Laws. Rejecting sanctuary cities by cutting federal discretionary funds to states and local governments that ignore existing immigration laws.
Reduce the Jobs Incentive. Require U.S. employers to use the E-Verify system to determine if a person can legally work here.
Bolster Border Security. Finish building the wall along our border.
Increased Prosecution. Go after coyotes, alien gang members, and criminals.
Rigorous Entry/Exit Tracking.
The plan also includes improving our immigration process; rewarding those who play by the rules and add to our country:

Maximize Program Efficiency. Make it faster and easier for employers and immigrants to obey the law.
Enhanced Reporting.
Modernize Immigration Law/Policy. Reduce chain migration to spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens.
English As Official Language. The plan would promote assimilation and legal immigrants’ success, and require English proficiency in order for any foreign person to be granted lawful permanent resident status.
Freedom from Political Oppression. The U.S. would continue to welcome victims of ruthless regimes.
Service to Country. Those lawfully serving in our armed forces would have an easier time becoming U.S. citizens.

Fred Thompson
The Washington Times.. "But on immigration, Mr. Thompson had several votes where he bucked the pack — and seemed to favor illegal aliens.

The most stark example was his 1995 vote on the welfare overhaul, when he voted to preserve illegal aliens' ability to receive federal benefits. He was one of just six senators to vote that wayAnd in 1996, as Congress considered a crackdown on illegal aliens, Mr. Thompson voted against setting up a system so employers could verify the legal status of their workers."

Voted YES on allowing more foreign workers into the US for farm work.
Vote to create a national registry containing names of U.S. workers who want to perform temporary or seasonal agricultural work, and to require the Attorney General to allow more foreign workers into the U.S. for farm work under H-2A visas.

Voted YES on visas for skilled workers.
This bill expanded the Visa program for skilled workers.

Ron Paul has stated that he wants very strong borders and he was appalled that our government had taken border guards off of our borders to send them to Iraq.
http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig8/haman3.html

This is his six point plan:
Physically secure our borders and coastlines. We must do whatever it takes to control entry into our country before we undertake complicated immigration reform proposals.
Enforce visa rules. Immigration officials must track visa holders and deport anyone who overstays their visa or otherwise violates U.S. law. This is especially important when we recall that a number of 9/11 terrorists had expired visas.
No amnesty. Estimates suggest that 10 to 20 million people are in our country illegally. That’s a lot of people to reward
for breaking our laws.
No welfare for illegal aliens. Americans have welcomed immigrants who seek opportunity, work hard, and play by the rules. But taxpayers should not pay for illegal immigrants who use hospitals, clinics, schools, roads, and social services.
End birthright citizenship. As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be citizens, the incentive to enter the U.S. illegally will remain strong.
Pass true immigration reform. The current system is incoherent and unfair. But current reform proposals would allow up to 60 million more immigrants into our country, according to the Heritage Foundation. This is insanity. Legal immigrants from all countries should face the same rules and waiting periods.

I AM A LEGAL IMMIGRANT IT TOOK 12 YEARS TO GET MY GREENCARD I WENT TO SCHOOL HERE TO BECOME A NURSE.
I WORKED SO HARD TO GET IT. WHEN I SEE DEMOCRATES WANT TO GIVE GREENCARD WHO IS IILELEGAL WITHOUT ANY COST. IT DOES NOT MAKE ANYSENSE. IF SO WHY I SPENT 12 YEARS TO GET GREEN CARD. DEMOCRATES WANT TO BRING ALL HISPANICS THIS COUNRTY SO THEY CAN WIN THE ELECTION
While Thompson's  proposal has its drawbacks, it does represent an effort to address one of the most crital problems facing this country. Clearly a significant  number of Americans do not approve of Illegal immigration for varying reasons. Since their tax dollars are paying for the range of services proposed by various leaders their bread and butter  concerns should be addressed.  Those who support illegal immigration have put forth many myths and humanistic concerns, concerns which this country does not even apply to its native citizens.

The basic issue is very simple:

1. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS HAVE BEEN ADMITTED TO THIS COUNTRY IN LARGE NUMBERS BECAUSE BUSINESS/EMPLOYERS WANT CHEAP LABOR AT ANY COST. SIMPLE GREED FUELS THIS DEMAND.

2. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS DO NOT TAKE THE JOBS THAT NO ONE ELSE WILL DO;  THEY TAKE JOBS AT A WAGE ON WHICH THE AVERAGE CITIZEN WAGE EARNER CANNOT AFFORD TO SUPPORT A WIFE AND 2 OR THREE CHILDREN (FEED, CLOTHE, TRANSPORTATION AND HEALTH CARE).

3. CURRENT DATA SHOW THAT  THIS IS TRUE. WHEN CRUIDER INC., (A CHICKEN PROCESSING COMPANY) LOST 75% OF ITS MOSTLY HISPANIC 900 MEMBER WORKFORCE DUE TO RECENT RAIDS BY FEDERAL IMMIGRATION AGENTS, LOCAL BLACK AND WHITE CIZENS RUSHED TO REPLACE THEM WHEN CRIDER OFFERED THE JOBS AT $7- 9 DOLLARS AND HOUR - A WAGE SEVERAL DOLLARS ABOVE WHAT THE COMPANY HAD PAID THEIR IMMIGRANT WORKERS.
4.THIS IS NOT A UNIQUE SITUATION. IT IS HAPPENING ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY AS CITIES AND STATES PASS LAWS TO REQUIRE EMPLOYERS TO REQUIRE PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP OR BE FINED BECAUSE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS DISPLACE  CITIZEN WAGE EARNERS!

5. TWO MONTHS AGO THE MARTIN LUTHER KING HOSPITAL IN  SOUTH CENTRAL LOS ANGELES HAD TO CLOSE DOWN BECAUSE IT COULD NOT CONTINUE TO OPERATE SERVING LARGE NUMBERS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS  AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR WHOM IT WAS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE FREE MEDICAL. THIS WAS A PARTICUALR TRAGEDY BECAUSE THAT COMMUNITY HAD FOUGHT A LONG HARD TO GET THAT COMMUNITY HOSPITAL BUILT.
6. RECENT RESEARCH BY PROFESSOR GEORGE BORJAS AT HARVAND UNIVERSITY SHOWS THAT THE EMPLOYMENT RATE OF BOTH WHITE AND BLACK MALES FELL SIGNIFICANTLY AS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT EMPLOYMENT IN THE LABOR MARKET INCREASED. THE RACIAL  EMPLOYMENT GAP WIDENED EVEN MORE FOR LOW SKILLED PERSONS AND YOUNG MALES AGE 18- 25.

7. CURRENT IMMIGRANT POLICY IS DISCRIMINATORY IN THAT IT ALLOWS HISPANICS AND CUBANS TO ENTER THE COUNTRY WITHOUT  ILLEGALLY BUT SENDS HATIANS BACK ACROSS THE OCEANS IN SINKING BOATS!

8.WHILE WE AS AMERICANS RECOGNIZE THE PLIGHT OF SOME PEOPLE IN  MEXICO - WE CANNOT SAVE THE WORLD. WE WOULD DO BETTER TO WORK WITH MEXICO TO IMPROVE CONDITIONS FOR ITS PEOPLE JUST AS WE DID WITY SOUTH AFRICA WHICH IS NOW FREE COUNTRY AND ON ITS WAY TO PROVIDING A DECENT LIFE FOR ALL ITS CITIZENS.

9.WE MUST NOT BE OVERWHELED BY THE HUMANISTIC ARGUMENT, BECAUSE AMERICA DOES NOT YET LOOK AFTER ITS OWN CITIZENS ADEQUATELY. ( WITNESS  THE CONTINUING WHITE POVERTY IN APALACHIA!) LETS DO THAT FIRST BEFORE WE TAKE ON OTHERS TO TUNE OF 12 MILLION! AMERICAN WAGE EARNERS ARE LOSING JOBS TO OUTSOURCING AND THE GENERAL IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION AT LARGE.

10. CLEARLY WE NEED A WIN-WIN SITUATION THAT GOES BEYOND THE RECENTLY FAILED AMNESTY BILL. CALIFORNIA HAS ESTIMATED THAT THE NET COST TO THE STATE OF PROVIDING GOVERNMENT SERVICES TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS  IS ALMOST 3BILLION A YEAR.  THE FACT THAT THE STATES MUST BEAR THE COST OF FEDERAL FAILURE MAKES ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION INTO ONE GIGANTIC UNFUNDED FEDERAL MANDATE. 40 PLUS STATES ARE STRUGGLING WITH LEGISLATION TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. WE NEED TO MOVE PAST THE BLEEDING HEARTS POSITION - "THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE, THEY JUST WANT A BETTER LIFE." (AREN'T WE ALL??, DON"T WE ALL??

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE DISPLACING AMERICAN CITIZENS IN  A RANGE OF INDUDTRIES HOTEL AND RESTURANT INDUSTRY, CONSTRUCTION, JANITORIAL, AND FORESTRY, TO NAME A FEW. UNIONS HAVE STOPPED FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHTS OF NATIVE WAGE EARNERS AND ARE GOING AFTER POT OF GOLD REPRESENTED BY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

LETS GET THE FACTS SO WE CAN BE INFORMED INSTEAD OF EMOTIONAL VOTERS AND DEMAND THAT OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS COME UP A PLAN THAT PUTS THE CONCERNS AND NEEDS OF THE AMERCAN WAGE EARNER FIRST AND THE GREED OF EMPLOYERS LAST!

People Fred Thompson is a member of the council on foriegn relations- please research CFR, North American Union, Amero, North American Transnational Highway. Fred Thompson's plan like everyone elses plan has all the talking points and no specifics on purpose they are never going to close the borders and they are not going to stop the influx of cheap labor for american corporations WHO ARE THIER DONORS  Ann
My thanks to First Read for the direct link to Fred Thompson’s “Border Security and Immigration Reform Plan.”  I just read the plan and I am impressed.  Thompson appears to be one of the few presidential candidates who understand the centrality of the principal of the rule of law to the American system of free government.  I am particularly pleased, now, that I quoted Thompson (from “The Rule of Law in the Wake of Clinton”) in March of this year when I spoke to the Mission Viejo City Council, urging its adoption of council member John Paul Ledesma’s proposed ordinance requiring the use of the Basic Pilot Program (now E-Verify) to check employment eligibility for city workers and employees of city contractors.  My statement (which follows) explained something about the rule of law which none of the first tier presidential candidates other than Thompson seem to understand:

Last time, [council member Frank] Ury urged you to: “Do the right thing.”  Why is it right for the city to do its part--choosing to do business only with firms that are willing to take this extra step to better comply with federal immigration law?

Senator Fred Thompson said: “The importance of the rule of law cannot be overstated.  In our country the rule of law is the foundation for every institution.  In many countries the chief drawback to the formation of a prosperous and civil society is the absence of the rule of law.”

Now, the rule of law means that all people are subject to the law, and the law is subject to the nation’s people.

The two mechanisms by which law functions to preserve life, liberty, and property–neither of which can stand alone–are law-enforcement, with its physical and deterrent effects, and respect for the law.

The American political tradition and its underlying religious tradition hold that each of us has a serious moral obligation to obey the law, and that in democratic societies the occasions on which we may, or must, disobey the law are very rare.

The June 2006 issue of Mission Viejo Community of Character.  Topic: Citizenship.  The heading: “Applying Citizenship.”  The very first item listed: “Obey the laws of the land.”  Exactly what we should be teaching!

Lincoln said “reverence for the laws”–never violating them and never tolerating their violation–should be “the political religion of the nation.”

Many Washington politicians prefer votes.  Many businesses prefer the unfair advantage of cheap illegal labor.  Illegal immigrants want to keep what they acquired by exempting themselves from the law, and committing felonies using false documents to obtain employment.

Some think we would show compassion by granting another amnesty of the kind that lets people keep what they got by cutting in line, substituting mere token sanctions in place of the existing ones.

But it is naive to think we can reward lawbreakers without adverse consequences.

Tolerating lawbreaking and rewarding lawbreaking are governmental ratification of lawbreaking.  They send a baneful message.  They teach that people do not have a serious moral obligation to obey the law.

To every small decree we diminish respect for the law we create more lawbreakers, and more victims of crime.  William Lloyd Garrison maintained that to excuse crime is to be guilty of its perpetration.

And who stands to lose the most if we help some poor people by methods that degrade the principle of the rule of law?  Andrew Jackson said: “In general, the great can protect themselves, but the poor and humble, require the arm and the shield of the law.”

I don’t see how one can claim to love his neighbor if he is willing to subvert the rule of law which protects his neighbor.

Now, you have a strong case, legally.  But, yes, you might be sued.  And you might even get a judge who decides politically rather than legally.

It would cost tax dollars.

But we are more than taxpayers.  We are Americans.
Fred who?
Fred Thompson gets it.  Illegal Immigration is a major issue now and will only get much, much worse with each coming year if it is not curtailed.  Fred isn't reinventing the wheel.  The laws are already in place.  They just aren't being enforced.  Illegal immigrants place a huge drain on our medical, economic, and social programs.  I have no problem with people wanting to live in this country.  Just get here legally!

Fred Thompson is the only one showing courage here.  The rest of them are pandering to the Hispanic vote and not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings.  I would be willing to bet that the Hispanics that have done it the right way don't like the illegals either.
Dave P. I second that! Illegal aliens will not pay taxes regardless of status. We don't want them as a whole. This issue keeps coming back in the Senate. I hope they realize how strongly this country feels. I have met no one who WANTS this bill.  If you come to America, do it legally.
I love Fred's plan! We should not give amnesty to the majority of the illegal aliens living in the USA. They have shown that they have no respect for U.S. laws. You have to think of it like an invasion. *What else can you call 20 to 38 million illegal aliens, most of them from Mexico, but an invading horde. Mexicans believe that the southwestern U.S. states belong to them, so they are colonizing them. Mexicans call it **La Reconquista.

It is relatively easy and cheap to get rid of the illegals by following a policy called Attrition through Enforcement. http://www.numbersusa.com/interests/attr...

President Bush and the rest of the open borders crowd constantly tell the American people that there are only two solutions to our nation's illegal alien crisis – give illegal aliens amnesty or round them up and deport them. This is a diversionary tactic to draw public attention away from the most effective and efficient solution – Attrition through Enforcement.

Stop them from working, stop the benefits that the states give to the illegals, stop giving citizenship to the children of illegal aliens, end sanctuary policies, and the illegals will self-deport. Unemployed Americans, prison labor, and legal immigrants can quickly replace the illegal aliens in the work force. Thank you.

* Study: Illegal alien population may be as high as 38 million

A new report finds the Homeland Security Department "grossly underestimates" the number of illegal aliens living in the U.S.

Hard to believe how the focus on the election campaign is based strictly on the illegal immigration issue.
Remember how low Bush's ratings were throughout his administration. All of the sudden republican have jumped on the immigrants hate bandwagon and all bad decision Bush made are forgotten.
He never cared about the borders until it became beneficial to him. Look at the whole picture. Americans are too smart to be fooled.
Fred Thompsons plan to eleviate the illegal alien occupation is the best news yet. I am now an Independent after voting Democrat for the last 30 years. I have changed my parties affiliation because of both sides of the aisle have intentionally ignored the citizen taxpayer, for the 38 million foreign nationals (according to Heritage foundation) who are occupying this country illegally. While the illegal employers stand back and paying nothing and we the taxpayer folk out our own taxes to pay for corporate interest wars and illegal immigrants paid low wages. Go and check on the suppressed facts and news found at americanpatrol, unipac, fairus, judicialwatch, numbersusa, indexer and libertypost. Go and read the truth from Canada that U.S. newspapers do not print about the globalist attempt to transfer U.S. sovereignty to a North American Union. Find it at canadianactionparty.ca
FIGHT FOR AMERICA NOW! IT MIGHT BE OUR LAST CHANCE?

Ending legal immigration costs only a few centimeters of ink and some paper.

Ending illegal would require a modest, but well-publicized imprisonment of employers. If one percent of the law enforcement and prison budgets were dedicated to arresting employers of illegals, the problem would be largely solved. Mandatory five-year
terms for employers! That's per conviction. Hire ten illegals, that's 50 years in prison.

A retroactive constitutional amendment explicitly
forbidding birth-right citizenship would help a lot
as well. Oh, and it wouldn't cost anything either, except some more ink and paper.
Clearly most of you are perfect, and have never broke the law, or done anything wrong , america is "so lucky" to have such perfect people. You are just looking at the situation sitting on you ass , on the couch or computer chair, you do not know what it is to not be able to support a family in their native country, that they have to come to a different country to work, illegaly, because even when they try to do it the right way, they still sometimes do not let them, or make you wait years, when they need to work now . You  dont know what you will do in their situation , punishment to those people is cruel because they are just trying to live a semi-good life, and there is not need for them to be deported when they have their life and family here, if they have not commited a CRIME , then they do not deserve deportation . Most of those people just want to work and have a life because they cannot have a decent one in their country, . So unless we are in their shoes, and have to make the decicions that they have make or go through what they have to go through, then do not talk about something you know nothing about.
screw everyone here
A Marshall Plan for Europe and Japan but not a cent to our neighbors within our own Western Hemisphere!  A border across Mexico to keep under-paid "pickers and agricultural workers" from taking jobs the Americans don't want yet not a single section of fence across Canada to discourage (white) Canadians and (white) Western European from entering and remaining in this country illegally -most of whom with bogus documentation are "stealing" lucrative white collar jobs in the US.  Yet, none of you are self-honest enough to recognize your inherent racism!
Get a clue people!  Our US Immigration Laws have ALWAYS been inherently racist - witness the "Chinese Exclusion Acts of 1882 finally repealed in 1943 when the US required China as an ally to fight the Japanese.  Hypocrisy and racism remain firmly entrench among the Anglo-American bigots and morons in total classic denial.  At least, be honest...no fence across Canada is clearly an act of hypocritical racism and none of you have the guts or integrity to admit to it.  You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
