Obama ad appeal to African Americans

Posted: Tuesday, October 23, 2007 3:46 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
In his continued courting of African Americans in South Carolina, where he is in a battle for support with Clinton, Obama has launched a radio ad narrated by Jesse Jackson Jr.

With what appears to be a piano rendition of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" playing in the background, Jackson Jr. says his own name and "my father" twice in the 60-second ad and urges voters to support Obama, who has "taken up the torch" and is "continuing that march for justice."

In a veiled swipe at Clinton, Jackson says, "A lot of politicians call themselves our friends. But Obama has a heart that beats for our community. And he's dedicated his life to the struggle."

Jackson concludes, "Once, South Carolina voted for my father, and sent a strong message to the nation. Next year, you can send more than a message. You can launch a President."

Per the campaign, the ad begins airing today on 36 gospel and R&B radio stations across South Carolina. This is the third radio ad, Obama has run in the state.

Here's the full transcript of “Defining Moment”:
JESSE JACKSON JR: “This is Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. Two decades ago, my father ran for President, calling on South Carolina and the nation to Keep Hope Alive. Today, Barack Obama has taken up the torch. He’s continuing that march for justice. And his campaign is a defining moment.

A lot of politicians call themselves our friends. But Obama has a heart that beats for our community. And he’s dedicated his life to the struggle.

As a community organizer for churches in hard-hit neighborhoods; as a civil rights lawyer and public official, Obama’s spent decades fighting for fairness. Obama’s passed laws to stop racial profiling, and the railroading of the poor in the justice system. And he’s spoken hard truths about the moral crisis in our community, and what we have to do to change it.

This is Jesse Jackson, Jr. Once, South Carolina voted for my father, and sent a strong message to the nation. Next year, you can send more than a message.  You can launch a President.

OBAMA: I’m Barack Obama, candidate for president, and I approve this message.

ANNOUNCER: Paid for by Obama for America.

See, if people think Hillary has the African American vote locked down. Think again.

I am not sure if the polls in south carolina is meaningful at this point.

Let see how this ad play out with another concert on the way.
And the Plot thickens.......
Being endorsed by the Jackson's has got to be like the kiss of death.
Let's see, until Obama entered the race, the Clintons were the greatist,Bah!Blatant pandering racism regardless of ability.Shame on tou Mr.Jackson, you are a hypocrite.
Brilliant!!!! ride on brother we got your back. The more we camapaign in the baber shop the more we are likely to win the black folks over.

I'm black.  You're black.  You have no decision really.
Wow, i like that video. Wining them over one at a time. Let us see if Hillary can keep up. Here is my new prediction

South Carolina's vote

Obama 65%
Edward 25%
Clinton 10% (mainly women)
Lek,

Thanks for the YouTube link. Something is going on in the grassroot. Hope 08!
Obama's campaign helps Hillary. Bingo!
That's what it was designed to do.
Whatever it takes to keep a distance between Edwards and Hillary.
However, Edwards has our support and much support in SC.

Awesome!! Really awesome!! I loved his interview on Tavis Smiley regarding Jackson's support:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7hyUM0n2pc
As a radical supporter of the First Amendment, I have opposed censoring even the most provocative and distasteful materials.
I do not support anything Rush Limbaugh has ever said, and my own opinion of the man as a human being is quite low.  No, he should neither be censored by the government nor the media.  But anyone who listens to him for "facts" does has not earned and do not deserve the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

This vanreuter character comes blasting on this board with his biased facts as if he were the Word come down.  Like Limbaugh, he cries when his judgment or intelligence is questioned, bleats and blares his acid in whatever direction he pleases.  Like Limbaugh, he is wind tunnel.

If that is what people want to read on a political blog on Monday morning...well, I think you know my opinion.

Maybe someday vanreuter will have his own radio show where he gets to make fun of others and scream foul at every challenge.

Until then, I'll be waiting, listening, but no longer reading First Read, what was once one of the best political blogs online.

Best wishes to all who linger here.

Listen to the silence of all those who have left.

he's so special...

Van
I was in SC last week and blacks told me they knew Obama couldn't win - because a black man would never be elected president unless he were a VP first.
They know Hillary doesn't want a black on her ticket.
And so - they're supporting John Edwards like they did in 2004.
Good like Lek, really enjoyed that!!
Thanks for the link, Lek

How could anybody, black, white, red, brown or yellow vote for lame ass Clinton instead of Barack Obama ?

He looks real, not phoney and programmed

Let's hope he has enough time to personally campaign in SC (as well as Iowa and NH)

Obama/Edwards '08
keep up. Here is my new prediction

South Carolina's vote

Obama 65%
Edward 25%
Clinton 10% (mainly women)

Bee (Sent Tuesday, October 23, 2007 4:12 PM)

Bee vs. Ree-AL-I-TEE

Clinton 38.8 Obama 25.8

Looks like Bee is using Toris' polling company...
Let's archive this nugget and dust it off when we get to the actual election.
So you have trouble with real polls but making stuff up is fine...

Van
Richard, Palatka, FL,

uhhh! I know how you feel? I still like Edward, though. I think Obama is going to pick him for VP if he wins the nomination.

The tavis smiley show is brilliant. I don't Hillary can be that relax.
now wasn't it just last week that Obamaites here were saying that Obama rejected the old guard of African Americans?and now he's using Jesse Jacksons son??

guess you all were wrong...

Obama's problem with the Black vote is that outside of being half African, he's not part of the community.
He was raised by the white side of his family, he does NOT have an African-American family. He has a white American family, and an African family.

AH, YES!  B.O. using O.J.'s "race card!!

Neither race or sex should have anything to do with politics, yet there always seem to be those simple-minded Neanderthals who will always use those idiotic demographics to create unnecessary divisiveness.

It is stupid, as a black, to ask other blacks to vote for you merely because you're black.  Same is true regarding sex.

Tuck,

you spam first read with your African American pundit talk for the last two months.

Obama's father is from Kenya, Kenya is in Africa

Obama grown up in white family ofcourse, Does African American's in this country don't live with whites in the same city or same village?

He is trying to run for American Presidentship, Not for African American Union

I am tired of your arguement, Tuck
Hillary has the black vote wrapped up.  She's the wife of the first black president, and she knows how to talk black.
Van,

Don't get mad, i am only giving prediction on what is to come in Jannuary. This are my prediction not scientific but well tested in the hood.  Obviously, Clinton can't pull those kind of Obama moment off.

I know it is hard for you to admit it, Obama is more authentic than Hillary.

That is the word on the ground. Live from Barber shop, the country club of the hood.
Hillary has the black vote wrapped up.  She's the wife of the first black president, and she knows how to talk black,
----------------------------------------------------

Another fantasy from the clinton machine. Good try it ain't gonna work. I am looking forward to Hillary's video in the barber shop. I bet she can't pull it off.
Bee – Your prediction is hilarious. There is no state in the nation where Hillary will receive only 10% of the vote just as there is no state in the nation where Obama will receive anywhere near 65%.

Get real.
Bee and BHO,just to let you know I thought Jesse would have made a fine President, but since hisRacism has crept in,Any white that votes for Obama will find themselves lowered in standing and law,and find themselves as abused as the slaves in 1855.He will cause a Race War plain and simple. He scares me more than David Dukes.
Ahman Winston, SC: '...Hillary has the black vote wrapped up......, and she knows how to talk black.

Yes, when she gets in front of a black audience, she talks like Aunt Jemima.
I've talke to black co-workers and they find this offensive.
It's phoney and condescending and so is she.
Think she speaks that way in the Senate ?

Tuck, Realityville, KS: '...Obama's problem with the Black vote is that outside of being half African, he's not part of the community....'

Thanks ofr speaking up for the black community, Tuck.
thanks for letting us know what they think.
I'm usre they'll be happy knowing you're speaking for them.

PS: Obama was a community organizer in Chicago.
In a black part of Chicago, not in Realityville, KS
Neither race or sex should have anything to do with politics,
Stu, Saginaw, MI

-- I agree Stu but surely it was an oversight that you did not include Religion? In fact Religion is specifically forbidden by the constititution as a test for public office.
NUANCED:

You are 100% correct. I failed to mention religion because that to which I was responding didn't mention religion.  RELIGION is a STUPID reason to either vote for or against anyone to lead our country.

larry, try real hard to figure out why Obama, half white American , half black Africa (not American) has no connection to the black community...

try real hard to figure out why they send his wife to talk to the black community.

You find it spam since it does agree with your views.
that's too bad. It is true. Obama is not culturally tied to the African American community.

I could never vote for Barack Obama, he is no different then Hillary Clinton... he wants to continue on the war with Iraq till 2013, possibly later, then he misses the Iran vote and made a statement he wouldn't rule out striking Iran and invade Pakistan without the consent of the government

www.blackagendareport.com
B Obama was polling at about 25% leading up to the Illinois primary race against establishment-backed candidates in Illinois. He ended up getting over 80% of the African American votes cast and won. In the actual senate race against the Repub later, he won with over 80% of the overall vote statewide(among all ethnic groups, including Repubs).

It is true. Obama is not culturally tied to the African American community.

This has got to be one of the most racist statements ever.  Just how is someone "culturally tied to the African American community"?  I'd like to see you describe exactly what that means.
Dear Domenico,

You must be busy. I have news for you:

OBAMA IN BOSTON ADDRESSES 9,500

THE HONORABLE GOVERNOR Deval Patrick said:

"For once, I want a campaign that’s not about the candidate, but about us.

Not about a resumé, but about character. Not about connections or convenience, but about conviction. Not about smearing the competition, but about lifting us all up. Not about the right and the left, but about right and wrong. Not about yesterday, but about tomorrow.

I don’t care whether the next president has experience in the White House. I care whether he understands life in your house.

I don’t care whether the next president has already met foreign heads of state. I care whether he knows something about how people live and think in distant cities and villages and can remember that our actions affect them, too.

I don’t care whether the next president is the first black president or the first woman president or the first whatever, to tell you the truth. I care that the next president has moral courage, a political backbone, the humility to admit what he doesn’t know, and the wisdom to learn from others".

(I know you guys are busy reporting "Hillary campaigns in Fresno" so you couldn't get the time to report "Obama campaigns in Boston"...and BTW draws 9,500)

We will gladly help you with reporting even though it is a little unfair.
I am a white male and I am supporting Obama. This country is in a world of hurt right now and I can't see any other candidate who can get us back on the right track. I'm afraid some candidates, both republican and democrat, wants to stay right where we are, or worst, get us into deeper problems.

I believe that Obama will at least try to get things back to where they are suppose to be. Please don't count him out just yet.

I don't look at him as a black man. I look at him as an American who wants to do the right thing for our great country.
javon... just like bush isn't culturally time to workclass white americans.

get over yourself. Race is an issue in the US, as is class.

to pretend otherwise is foolish
What does Obama have to say that is that much different than anyone else. How does the fact that he spent his childhood years out side of the US a positive? Not being from Ill was his time in the state Senate in the majority or the minority? Why would I think that he could stop the partisan BS. I dont know of any thing that he has done to reach across the aisle? It takes both parties working together to have any positive out come. Either one in absolute power is bad. Some one out there tell me why would a middle class white guys America be better off with Sen Obamma? How would America be better off with the Sen? Im not asking on what he can give me, I will earn for myself and my family, I dont need or want the government in my personel life, just to protect me, and make travel across the US possible. So without a hand out tell me why....
SEX, RACE, RELIGION, These are a few of the things that really, really, really impact an election.

It is a hard true FACT.
You may say nay but we all know it is true. It will be difficult to elect a woman and double difficult a black man.
Just ask Deval Patrick governor of my state of Massachusetts how vicious the Republicans were when he ran for office here in a BLUE state. They just about destroyed his family and his sisters family.  They also used the big scary black man crusade which was the worst of all. I am glad he is endorsing Obama as he needs the assist that Deval can supply.
Here is another perspective for folks that don't understand Obama's doctrine.
------------------------------------------------------

To understand how Obama can continue to deal with McKlurkin, one has to understand what I will call the Obama doctrine.

There is no doubt that McKlurkin's views on gays are disturbing. Obama quickly issued a statement unequivocally disagreeing with them, but explained that the singer's views reflect a broader struggle within the black community (in this case) to come to terms with homosexuality both in the home and as an issue of the political discourse.

The point Obama is making is that McKlurkin deserves a seat at the table of political dialogue; that one cannot ignore homophobia by sweeping it under the carpet, and then wonder why it is there, why your attempts to whitewash dissent didn't work, and why there is still dirt on the floor that lies beneath that carpet you so assiduously spent an entire morning cleaning.

When Obama talks about unity, he is not saying that it already exists. The Obama Doctrine unequivocally states that one cannot achieve unity and change unless one is willing to directly engage those with different views.

Thus, Obama's acceptance of a financial contribution or a form of support from McKlurkin is both sound of doctrine and morally legitimate AS LONG AS OBAMA DOES NOT SUPPORT HIS VIEWS AND SAYS SO PUBLICLY, which he has.

Barack frequently points out that, as President, he may at times disagree with us and we may disagree with him. Either way, however, he will still fight for us, not against us.

That is a key tenet of the doctrine, and it also speaks to the direction of Obama's political ideology. While most politicians support a laundry list of issue first and join a party or caucus second, Obama does the opposite, because he recognizes, as few politicians do, that any policy platform must first rest on a philosophy --in this case, of hope and change-- before earning any legitimacy.

Obama is embracing McKlurkin as a citizen, not as a thinker. And in doing so, his message of unity is magnified in its unexpected and splendid admixture of strengths and challenges.

When Obama tells us that a vote for him entails some risk. This is what he means. The risk is NOT because he is half black, or young, or a first-term U.S. senator, as the media would have one believe.

The risk lies in our being willing to confront the growing pains associated with bringing a country together under common goals while, at the same time, being honest about the fact that we must speak to those we disagree with. That is why he is able to unequivocally state that he would consider meeting with dictators without pre-conditions.

The exercise of leadership and courage always involves risks and forays into untrodden ground. That is another key tenet of Obama's doctrine.

I think what we are missing about Obama is ... Republicans will not work with anybody named:  Clinton.  I will grant you that Bill Clinton did alot for the country and Black People benefited ... But do you remember the government shutting down under a Clinton.  No President will be able to get their program through without some Republicans going along with them.  There will be times when certain Democrats will not just vote with the "Party" because of the dis-advantages to their particular state.  In those cases the President will have to get Republicans to make up for those votes.  Mrs. Clinton will not be able to do that.

Look at the division that has already been caused just in these primaries.  Obama appeals to Independents, Democrats, and Republicans.  He may not have alot of Foreign Policy experience but do you think the Leaders of the Middle Eastern Countries would be more willing deal with someone who looks like them or someone of European decent?  Just look at our (US) position in the world community.  Look at the perspection of Black people (in general) and Black Males (in particular) in this nation.  Black people though out the US and the world benefit from Obama being President.  Minority Groups of all types (in this Nation) benefit from Obama being President.  So what if he didn't grow up in our neighborhoods!  He represents a "Step" in the right direction for all of us.  He proves you do not have to be a ball-player or an entertainer to be relevent.  He must be doing somthing right ... He mastered Chicago Politics.  You talk about having credibility ... Black People in Chicago do not elect candidates who can't get the job done.  Plus ... he got alot of White people who voted for him.  His challenger, there, tried to inject race ... He won anyway.  I think he is the "Real Deal".

I understand why Oprah endorses him.  He's just like her.  He's learned how to beat the "White Man" at his own game.

Just My Opinion ...
