Tracking Hillary Clinton's views on Social Security is becoming a full-time job. Over the past two months, she has been tantalizingly explicit in her views, deliberately vague about what she thinks, publicly steadfast in saying she doesn't want to talk about specific ways to ensure solvency and privately willing to share her thoughts when the situation has suited her.

Thanks to an alert Nedra Pickler of the Associated Press, another piece of the puzzle fell into place recently -- although it has been largely ignored as the Democratic candidates have sparred over Iran and the political cognoscenti have been distracted by changes in the Republican race and debates over whether Clinton's lead in national polls truly reflects her strength in the Democratic race.

Pickler reported on an event in Iowa recently when Tod Bowman, a teacher at Maquoketa Community High School, asked Clinton for more details about her position on Social Security. In the public forum she demurred, which she had begun to do earlier when pressed as to her positions. She said she preferred to put the federal government on a more disciplined budgetary footing as the first step to dealing with the Social Security's financial problems.

When the forum ended, according to Pickler, Bowman went up to Clinton to have his picture taken and asked her more about the future of Social Security. In that conversation, Clinton said she was open to asking workers to pay payroll taxes on more of their earnings, but wanted to protect middle-class workers at the same time.

The details of what she is talking about are strikingly similar to something John Edwards outlined during a Democratic debate in Iowa sponsored by the AARP, a proposal Clinton rejected at the time.

Currently, workers are taxed for Social Security purposes on the first $97,500 in earnings. All earnings above that are exempt from payroll taxes. Edwards said he would favor a measure that would require people who earn more than $200,000 annually to pay payroll taxes on any earnings above that level, but exempt that portion between $97,500 and $200,000 -- an innovative idea.

Clinton had to be pressed by moderator Judy Woodruff of PBS before she affirmatively rejected the idea -- only to suggest to Bowman that she is quite receptive to the idea, if not all the details.

In an interview with the Post recently, Clinton was asked specifically about the Edwards proposal and whether she thought it had merit, perhaps in altered form. She stepped back from that question to say that she did not think the Social Security system is in crisis, would appoint a bipartisan commission as president to make recommendations for a long-term fix, would not talk about specific ideas during the campaign and would resist doing so as president until the commission offered up its proposals.

A few days later, she shared with Bowman her thoughts about the Edwards idea. Her receptivity to subjecting more earnings to payroll taxes was not entirely a surprise. There have been hints from her camp that she was at least open to the kind of donut strategy Edwards had outlined, but with a different income level as a trigger for resuming payroll taxes.

That continued her twisting path that included a stop in Boston in early September in which she was quite explicit about what she would not accept as part of solution to fixing the government retirement program's long-term financial problems. At a forum there, she made a point of differentiating herself from rival Barack Obama, who had said earlier this year that everything should be on the table when it comes to dealing with the problem.

"Putting everything on the table is not the right answer," Clinton said, according to an AP account. "Raising the retirement age is not an answer. Cutting benefits is not an answer. We need to get back to the fiscal responsibility that we had in the 1990s, when we weren't draining the Social Security fund any more."

The AP story said that Clinton aides made clear to reporters that she was disagreeing with Obama.

More recently, she has tried to back away from those comments. Reminded during the Post interview of what she had said, she replied, "What I've said is I that would not advocate any of this. I'm not advocating any of it as a presidential candidate or as a president."

Nonetheless, her advisers are willing to say that she still opposes private or personal accounts as any part of a Social Security fix -- a position shared by all the Democratic candidates. Spokesman Phil Singer, in a message Wednesday, was emphatic about this idea: "Social Security privatization is a non-starter." he wrote. "Period."

He responded to a question about why Clinton was speaking privately with a voter about her ideas but not with the public at large by writing, "There are many ideas that are worthy of discussion, but Senator Clinton believes we need to first focus on fiscal responsibility."

Clearly Clinton doesn't want to talk publicly about Social Security. She has higher domestic priorities, the most important of which is enacting universal health care, a battle that could consume most of the energy invested in domestic issues early in her first term.

But she has been more than willing to talk about it when it has seemed to suit her political purposes, first to suggest that Obama is willing to embrace cuts in benefits that she might not (although that is far from clear now) and then to satisfy a voter in Iowa, where she is in the toughest battle of her campaign.

Her selectivity suggests that she has real views about the system that would shape her policies if she ever becomes president -- unless she is truly prepared to accept whatever her bipartisan commission proposes. One of the values of talking about those ideas in a presidential campaign is to begin to build public support for them. Instead, Clinton has engaged in an on-again, off-again conversation that appears more designed to suit her own purposes. She owes voters more than that

There is plenty of Chinese money to pay Hillary's staffers.  She just needs to ask if more money is needed.

There are so many people in NY would wish Billary would go back to Arkansas.  Hell I would even pay for the plane fare.

More staffers in Iowa won't change the fact that Hillary Clinton is evil.

Clinton campaign volunteer treated badly, and switches to Obama

I came to Iowa as a die-hard Hillary Clinton supporter/volunteer, who was ready to help elect the first woman president of the United States.

I had extra time to spend in Iowa before a trip to Fargo, so I decided to volunteer for a week before I went to Fargo and for two weeks afterward. Within the first couple of days of arriving, I had seen three field workers cry because of the abuse they took. The volunteers were segregated and treated like second-class citizens. I left after my first week, hoping things would change, but they did not.

I was ignored, even though I asked many people for work to do. So I decided to leave the campaign as a volunteer, knowing that I have been supporting the wrong candidate.

As a former state president of College Democrats and having worked on numerous campaigns, I have never seen people treated so badly. I have officially changed my views: I believe Barack Obama will be the best president of United States. - James Henson,

Volunteers usually get in the way, they are like puppies who need to be put in the crate sometimes to curb their enthusiasm. Must be from all those morning lattes. Jerry, that was a great joke, you do have a sense of humor.

Too little, too late, Hillary.  Obama has had these staffers in IA for a long time and he has at least 31 field offices in IA.  He has also held detailed training seminars on caucus primaries which is very different from regular voting primaries.  The longer the traditional media fails to recognize the Obama juggernaut, the better.

The over whelming number of her staff is from out of state, because most Iowans who work in political campaigns don't support Hillary.  

These are the same people who have no clue when they are offensive, like when they lift the University of Iowa Hawkeye marching band's chant and add a reference to Hillary to the chant. That goes over about as well as changing a few  words in a church hymn into a campaign song would among regular church goers.

Because her internal polls (the ones that actually poll prior caucus goers, as opposed to the public polls that poll registered Democrats, and are statistically invalid) tell her what those of us on the ground know, she has a ceiling, she's reached it, and has no where to go but down.

Domenico Montaro and Chuck Todd serve as the media arm of the Hillary campaign.  Their lack of objectivity in reporting makes First Read as credible as the National Enquirer.  WTF...why is this newsworthy?  How about mentioning that Sen. Obama drew 9K people in Boston?  Yet, it did not recieve the robust coverage as opposed to HillaryNews.

I will be in Hillary's corner all the way. So far there is no one else. I don't respect Mr. Edwards because I think at this time he need to be home takeing care of his wife. To me family is much more important than public office. He will have another time to run for President.

I sit here and laugh at the ignorant comments from some of the idiots.  What are they going to do in November 2008, vote for a republican?  I don't think so!  I also cannot believe how nasty and tacky some of the comments are from supposedly intelligent people.  The only thing I can think of is that they are republicans or men afraid of Hilary.

I don't understand why Hillary believes hiring more staffers will help here in Iowa.  Was this decision made after checking the results of other candidates? Clearly we need a leader, not a follower. I've spent a lot of months making a decision about who is best candidate for Iowa.  It's certainly not Hillary Clinton. In talking with many of my neighbors, they feel the same. I am not going to bash anyone. We, IOWANS, need a change from how we have been treated. The change that Clinton NOW speaks of is once again a "followed quote" in order to get support. I HOPE the rest of us Iowans realize this soon. Perhaps they will do their homework as I did.

Great news on the increase in staff in Iowa.  Just what she needs for the final push on toward the caucuses.  She's got a huge lead in the states that come after Iowa, and now she's going to pin this down as well.  She's got something solid to build on there too - last poll by the Des Moines Register shows she's got an 11 point lead (!!!!).

I do not support Hillary.  I do support Obama.  The reason why is that I can read the issues pages on the web sites, and read the speeches on the campaign sites.  I can see the history of these candidates.  There is no experience advantage either way, they are equally experienced.  Obama has good ideas.  I don't know from her web site what Clinton's ideas are.

I will be voting for Obama in November 08.  Perhaps it will be a write-in, but I will be voting for him.

I would put it differently, although it does not apply in every case.  My experience is that the Obama campaign has generally attracted idealists.  My experience with Bill's Administration is that the Clintons attract many opportunists.  Case in point is this recruiting flyer.

I find the sniping between the supporters of the Democratic candidates puerile, and unbecoming.  I'm sure the Republicans find it amusing and comforting.

The press may assert that Senator Clinton is coasting, or a sure thing, but there is nothing inevitable about this election cycle as she and her advisers obviously know. Clinton is in the least enviable position - she basically has to win the 4 early states outright or the media will be all over her about momentum, and that shifts the focus away from her preferred messages.  She has no room for errors, whereas Obama and Edwards merely have to do well to stay in the hunt.

Ask Howard Dean about early leads, and poll results.

I make no secret of preferring Obama's vision and integrity. I think he can do more with the presidency than his obvious competitors - but the front-running Democratic senators are all powers to be reckoned with over the long term, and it would be startling if any of them didn't treat everything leading up to and including SuperDuper Tuesday as though it mattered immensely, because in truth it does.

1 - James McDougal - Clinton's convicted Whitewater partner died of an apparent heart attack, while in solitary confinement. He was a key witness in Ken Starr's investigation.

2 - Mary Mahoney - A former White House intern was murdered July 1997 at a Starbucks Coffee Shop in Georgetown. The murder happened just after she was to go public with her story of sexual harassment in the White House.

3 - Vince Foster - Former White House counselor and colleague of Hillary Clinton at Little Rock's Rose Law firm. Died of a gunshot wound to the head, ruled a suicide.

4 - Ron Brown - Secretary of Commerce and former DNC Chairman. Reported to have died by impact in a plane crash. A pathologist close to the investigation reported that there was a hole in the top of Brown's skull resembling a gunshot wound. At the time of his death Brown was being investigated, and spoke publicly of his willingness to cut a deal with prosecutors. The rest of the people on the plane also died. A few days later the air Traffic controller committed suicide

5 - C. Victor Raiser II - Raiser, a major player in the Clinton fund raising organization died in a private plane crash in July 1992

6 - Paul Tulley - Democratic National Committee Political Director found dead in a hotel room in Little Rock, September 1992. Described by Clinton as a "dear friend and trusted advisor".

7 - Ed Willey - Clinton fund raiser, found dead November 1993 deep in the woods in VA of a gunshot wound to the head. Ruled a suicide. Ed Willey died on the same day his wife Kathleen Willey claimed Bill Clinton groped her in the oval office in the White House. Ed Willey was involved in several Clinton fund raising events.

8 - Jerry Parks - Head of Clinton's gubernatorial security team in Little Rock. Gunned down in his car at a deserted intersection outside Little Rock. Park's son said his father was building a dossier on Clinton. He allegedly threatened to reveal this information. After he died the files were mysteriously removed from his house.

9 - James Bunch - Died from a gunshot suicide. It was reported that he had a "Black Book" of people which contained names of influential people who visited prostitutes in Texas and Arkansas.

10 - James Wilson - Was found dead in May 1993 from an apparent hanging suicide. He was reported to have ties to Whitewater.

11 - Kathy Ferguson- Ex-wife of Arkansas Trooper Danny Ferguson, was found dead in May 1994, in her living room with a gunshot to her head. It was ruled a suicide even though there were several packed suitcases, as if she were going somewhere. Danny Ferguson was a co-defendant along with Bill Clinton in the Paula Jones lawsuit. Kathy Ferguson was a possible

corroborating witness for Paula Jones.

12 - Bill Shelton - Arkansas State Trooper and fiancé of Kathy Ferguson. Critical of the suicide ruling of his fiancé, he was found dead in June, 1994 of a gunshot wound also ruled a suicide at the grave site of his fiancé.

13 - Gandy Baugh - Attorney for Clinton's friend Dan Lassater, died by jumping out a window of a tall building January, 1994. His client was a convicted drug distributor.

14 - Florence Martin - Accountant & subcontractor for the CIA, was related to the Barry Seal Mean Airport drug smuggling case. He died of three gunshot wounds.

15 - Suzanne Coleman - Reportedly had an affair with Clinton when he was Arkansas Attorney General. Died of a gunshot wound to the back of the head, ruled a suicide. Was pregnant at the time of her death.

16 - Paula Grober - Clinton's speech interpreter for the deaf from 1978 until her death December 9, 1992. She died in a one car accident.

17 - Danny Casolaro - Investigative reporter. Investigating Mean Airport and Arkansas Development Finance Authority. He slit his wrists, apparently, in the middle of his investigation.

18 - Paul Wilcher - Attorney investigating corruption at Mena Airport with Casolaro and the 1980 "October Surprise" was found dead on a toilet June 22, 1993 in his Washington, DC apartment. Had delivered a report to Janet Reno weeks before his death.

19 - Jon Parnell Walker - Whitewater investigator for Resolution Trust Corp. Jumped to his death from his Arlington, Virginia apartment balcony August 15, 1993. He was investigating the Morgan Guaranty scandal.

20 - Barbara Wise - Commerce Department staffer. Worked closely with Ron Brown and John Huang. Cause of death unknown. Died November 29, 1996. Her bruised, nude body was found locked in her office at the Department of Commerce.

21 - Charles Meissner - Assistant Secretary of Commerce who gave John Huang special security clearance, died shortly thereafter in a small plane crash.

22 - Dr. Stanley Heard - Chairman of the National Chiropractic Health Care Advisory Committee died with his attorney Steve Dickson in a small plane crash. Dr. Heard, in addition to serving on Clinton's advisory council personally treated Clinton's mother, stepfather and brother.

23 - Barry Seal -Drug running pilot out of Mena Arkansas, death was no accident.

24 - Johnny Lawhorn Jr. - Mechanic, found a check made out to Bill Clinton in the trunk of a car left at his repair shop. He was found dead after his car had hit a utility pole.

25 - Stanley Huggins - Investigated Madison Guaranty. His death was a purported suicide and his report was never released.

26 - Hershell Friday - Attorney and Clinton fund raiser died March 1, 1994 when his plane exploded.

27 - Kevin Ives & Don Henry - Known as "The boys on the track" case. Reports say the boys may have stumbled upon the Mena Arkansas airport drug operation. A controversial case, the initial report of death said, due to falling asleep on railroad tracks. Later reports claim the 2 boys had been slain before being placed on the tracks. Many linked to the case died before their testimony could come before a Grand Jury.

28 - Keith Coney - Died when his motorcycle slammed into the back of a truck, 7/88.

She probably needs them for one of her phony 'diner' visits.  Did you all read about it? Probably not. Apparently the news media has gotten the same kind of 'call' that made GQ pull a negative story. Try and find negative press about the christened heir to the throne.

Here's what happened. She goes into a little luncheonette to rub elbows with the common folk..probably wanted them to know they won't be 'invisible' in her administration.  Here's the problem though.  The whole thing was scripted and everyone in the place, except 2 people, were from Hillary's campaign.  She staged the whole thing for publicity.  Heaven forbid she should actually go and really talk to people..she might even have to answer a hard question where the people just don't let her read sound-bites and evade issues.

Obama just seems so much more visionary, so much more capable of making sweeping, real change happen. My advice to anyone thinking of working for Hillary's campaign in Iowa, is to think twice and tighten your belt instead, and go work for Obama.

I met a guy here this last week. His name was Matt. He's a full time field organizer for Obama, out of Duke University. He's driving around his mom's car and living at home, eating for free, so that he can work for free FULL TIME for the Obama campaign through the primaries. He is doing this because he knows its Obama that can actually change the world.

I have driven across State lines to work for free for Obama. I've knocked on hundreds of doors. I've used up all my ink cartridges, even the color ones, to make fliers to put up for him. I'm typed until my fingers bled on blogs.

I will work myself to the bone and sacrifice everything I can to get Obama elected. Not because I'm being paid, not because it's the best strategic solution to my problems, not for my health, but becasue it's the best thing I can do for my country, for my friends in Iraq, for the environment, for fairness and for freedom from fear at home and abroad.

I urge anyone reading this to get out there and do something to help Obama get elected. Don't look for money to do it. Don't take a job for Hillary Clinton just because it seems like a good cash move. Get out there and do something good for a change. Help a good man put the pieces of this nation back together in a way that will make it stronger than before.

I cannot speak with enough passion about this issue. Only by literally knocking on doors are we going to change this world. Only by ignoring the media establishment that would play kingmaker are we going to change this world. Only by taking our fate into our own hands and making change happen are we going to MAKE it happen.

Consider all this seriously before you decide to send in your resumes to Hillary Clinton.

Hillary still has my vote, and the votes of quite a few of my neighbors. She's what the GOP is afraid of: A Smart & Capable President.

I do find it funny that the majority of her detractors tend to fall into one of two groups, those who call her 'names' and others who parrot the Rush's talking points.

I support Hillary Clinton because she's smart, tough and experienced.  Years next to power in Arkansas and the White House actually does count toward experience and her nearly 7 distinguished years in the Seante gives her the knowlege of working on both sides of the legistlature and the executive.

I'm appalled at the vicious attacks on her by Obama and Edwards supporters.  And I would remind all Democrats that Iowa gave us John Kerry in 2004 = a fine man but a terrible candidate.  If Iowans had done their homework they would have seen that Kerry had ALWAYS been a terrible candidate.  Every election he won in liberal Massachusetts was always by the skin of his teeth.  Hillarry won re-election in New York State with a very larege vote from Republicans upstate because she does reach out to people and because she has been a great seanttor.

Iowa seems to be the best shot for Obama, if he fails to win he is very likely to lose the support of the Democratic supporters as he is trailing double digits in all other primary states.

I think most of Manhattan would disagree with you.  Hillary won by a huge percentage, and not only in New York City.  And I, certainly, am not uninformed- I read the New York Times, parts of the Post (and no, not just Page Six)  and various types of online media every single day, and I can't even vote yet.  

have you tried to research all the deaths....only appear in gossip ads...no real reports on over half of the so called deaths....just names on the paper..no real proof that most of these people are even dead.  I just spend 2 days trying to find the obituaries on all these people...nada on most.
