A $2.4 trillion price tag

Got an extra $8,000 sitting around?

If so, good -- because, according to the Congressional Budget Office's report on the costs of the Iraq War, the $2.4 trillion price tag over the next decade comes out to some $8,000 for every man, woman, and child in the United States.

CBO Director Peter Orszag met with some of the members of the House Budget Committee today -- 13 of the 21 Democrats, and 3 of the 15 Republicans -- with the ominous news that "it's clear under analysis that the nation is on an unstable fiscal path ... with the higher debt and interest costs, is going to cause severe economic dislocation, which are exacerbated by war costs."

Orszag said a big factor in the large price tag is the reset costs. Reset costs originally meant that the money would be spent to return military brigades to the same standing as before they were deployed -- i.e. fixing tanks and vehicles, or if irreparable, replacing them with similar equipment.

However, an additional CBO study found that, rather than repairing or replacing equipment, the military is upgrading or getting something new. Orszag used the example of the 120 M-182 tanks that are being requested with new funding. At the cost of "$5 million per tank, this cost is more than returning the damaged tank to its original state."

"If you fully fund these requests, the military will be in a better position in terms of equipment than before the war," Orszag told them.

reagan  had as much to do with bring down the iron curtain as fleas have to do with the discovery of DNA
John,

Keep up the good work in PA shoveling your organic material. The rest of us will keep busting our humps  to cover the farm subsidies you are probably living off of. I wonder what that dollar amount is per person? Idiot.
John B, Des Moines, IA, your reply is, "The Social Security gap could be over 50% covered just by lifting the 85,000 cap on income subject to FICA withholding.  The rest could easily be filled with a little tinkering here and there as long as we do it now."

Like I said my friend, if you want to fully retain and fully correct the insolvency of Social Security and Medicare, you have to dramatically increase taxes. As costly as the pursuit of an empire is, this is a "welfare-warfare" state. The welfare part of that is financially more costly than the warfare; Social Security and Medicare expenditures are much greater than "defense".

Taxpaying citizens already work the first four months of every year as an effective slave to the government. I consider current tax rates exorbitant, let alone saddling future generation with one at 80%.

Moreover, aside from the fact that the Constitution has no provision for standing armies, it also has no provision for social entitlement programs.

A nation of dependents necessarily translates into a citizenry in bondage. We must cull the warfare and the welfare to restore and maintain a prosperous, free republic. This has been the finding of experts within and without the government for the past 20 years.
And Bush and the Republican's whine about the cost of SCHIP?!  Dana Perino, the voice of the Administration when Bush and Co. don't want to face tough questioning, has the audacity to say ""We don't know how much the war is going to cost in the future."  This from an Aminsitration that considers itself "fiscally responsible"?   An Administration which has no budget and no plan whatsover for it's endless wars and nation building.  Bush and the Republicans would love to continually blame Democrats for the huge deficits they have run up, but the fact of the matter is, they have no fiscal plan whatsover (unless it means cutting health care for children, veterans, cutting funds for U.S. infrastructure, the National Parks, equipment and staffing for local and national natural disasters like Katrina and the current fires in S. California.  The list is endless.  But the dollars will always be there for their neverending wars, the Blackwaters, the Haliburtons.  Bush and his cohorts in the White House and Congress are absolutely shameless.  They exemplify the very worst of the "conservative" mindset.  Dwight Eisenhower and other real "conservatives" would be appalled.
Mitchell - you forgot one thing...bringing home 110,000 soldiers would also mean 110,000 extra firefighters in California right now.  Give each of them a water bucket and the fires are out in 10 minutes tops.
I totally resent that my children and future grandchildren have to pay for something that even I did not want.
I have been against this war and knew it was wrong and yet, my hard earned money goes to pay for Bush's folly.
It is the taxpayers money and we should not have to accept this gross amount for a war most of us did not want, do not want and should not have to pay for.
John S. Alexander, Edinboro, PA

Why are JFK and Johnson never referred to as "boy kings"?  Or Truman, for that matter?

Are you the same John S. Alexander, Edinboro, PA who said somewhere else that it was refreshing to see reasoned political discussion, not rants, or was that your other personality?

And please clarify if it is "jack" or "jag".

As for supper, I choose the organic material from your cows as opposed to you.  Less indigestion that way.

Karlos, Van, Gary et al.  Sorry, can't make it, have to work, too, like John.

NO PROBLEM JUST PUT IN ON GEORGE W. BUSH'S AMERICAN EXPRESS CARD,HE WOULDN'T LEAVE THE WHITE HOUSE WITHOUT IT.
WITH YOUR TAXES GOING UP TO PAY THIS MULTI TRILLION DEBT, BEST OF LUCK I'LL BE MOVING TO BARBADOES.
So Van, you're going to march against the war and yet, you're a big Hillarophile.  Go figure!  Oxymorons would be amusing if not for their confounding tendency to make no sense.
Pssssssssssssss hey you , yes you could you please lend me a couple of trillion dollars ?
Mitchell Feldman, thanks for putting the hard to comprehend number $2,400,000,000,000 into a mental picture that's easier to comprehend.  Also thanks for pointing out that CHOOSING to fight this war means CHOOSING to not do a whole bunch of things for the citizens of the USA.

help! bought my american flag pin a few weeks ago to prove i am a patriot it broke and now it will cost me $8,000 to replace it
I think the money should have been used for tax breaks for the rich.
Yeah some of you JACKOFF right blingers, we do work for a living, We are farmers and machinists, lawers and teachers, mothers and fathers who have lost a lot under your boy king, wages and children! In fact the democratic party has the more diversification than your party, oh yeah that's your problem with us, we are diversified. Thats what you get in a democracy! Eat me and the organic material my cows leave all you jagoffs who still support satan and his crew.

My, my, my.  Someone did not get a healthy breakfast and is all moody and angry.  Hey farm boy, don't step in any excrement, much of which seems to come from your mouth.
vanreuter, NY NY...Do you know if St. Louis, Mo. is having a protest, or maybe somewhere I look up to see where protests are being held and how to get one started?

I will be there with you in spirit.

LETS BRING AN END TO THIS WAR NOW!!!!!!!!!!
vanreuter, NY NY...I found the site of cities for the portest.  Thanks.
Wolfawitz called analysts 7-10 Billion figure "wildly off the mark" then he got promoted to head the World Bank.  The government can't account for 1.2 BILLION dollars in Iraq (probably stolen and being funneled to Iran to fund their nukes as we speak) Yeah that sounds about right in this administration.  If you can't add or project a budget you're hired.  If this was the Dems mess, the Cons would be all over this without mercy.
Wow, I finally got a rise out of you non-idea voters, Thanks i thought you all were ignoring my posts when they don't agree with your assumptions.
TXovertaxed no farm subsidies here boyo, I think farm subsides are a waste of money. At least I have the balls to put my real name out there, you hide behind some cute little pseudonym. Too afraid to put it out there with your John Handcock (pun intended). richard from washigngton is that all you got? Another whiner without ideas. In Pittsburgh it's JAGOFF, everywhere else it is JACKOFF either way it's you! You are all missing the point we owe to the communists billions and you go and attack another american for the job he does everyday, great politics you babies. What do you do for a living? I see that your people hide and pretend you are the greatest but your not, you are just an average american like me, pissed off and angry about where are country is going but all you got is to try to look far back in history to prove a point, oh yeah you have no point other than you hate people who work to put food on your table, that is one of the many reasons your party has lost it's way, it is full of people who hide from the truth. See you at the polls. I will name my next cow flop after you two "TaxedmiddlenoclassRichard".
I'm sure the democrats will take it from the poor as well as the righ......
jerry/corpus christi texas

--- jerry, are you OK? You got cut off in mid sentence. Should we call 911?
disgusted and dismayed >>   help! bought my american flag pin a few weeks ago to prove i am a patriot it broke and now it will cost me $8,000 to replace it <<

No need to worry d&d.  Just call up Obama and ask him to send you one for free.  The only issue is that it will be a white flag, but somehow I don't think you'll mind.

Jarred Williams NYC,
You got me Jarred, I was angry yesterday, i apoligize for my indescretion. I work before dawn, come in to have coffee and a smoke and read the news and I see comments from people without names telling me to get the 'EF' out of their country, go to Cuba and other such nonsense, I am not on welfare, don't drive a caddie, and I don't procreate like a rabbit but that is how many people portray members of the dem party, it just got my goat HA HA. I have voted for people in both paties throughout my life, In PA you cannot be an independant and vote in the primaries so I chose the democratic party because of my grandfather who gave me my interest in politics and nature. I respect that you put out your real name and where your from, more should do this.
I just came back from walking the dog and it is a beautiful day, the colors are stupendous, it helped me to see that I was wrong to rant like that and I again apoligize to other americans I have offended here, please forgive me. I just am so angry that we owe so much to the communists and shieks. We gotta do something before we implode from this debt. Sorry Richard from Wash. I wrote my last missive before my walk please excuse the tail end of my rage.
Jarred I hope you read this post tonight, peace.
true patriot, so glad i was able to be the subject of your post today hope your unbridled derision for little ol' me has made your day
Mike, Hermoza; Welfare is not allocated more than warfare.  As you can see here http://www.sensibleiowans.org/budget_analysis.php defense consumes more money than everything else put together.
Don't worry - Iraqi oil will pay for the war.  Besides, it's $15,998.50 apiece for POOR people -  BushCo parasites will only be charged $1.50.  A "true patriot" will reach into their pants to collect it.
oh, i forgot true patriot, i have a canadian flag pin somewhere in the house will that do? just want to add another post so you can get all your anger out on little ol' me its called true love
John B, Des Moines, IA, your reply is, "Mike, Hermoza; Welfare is not allocated more than warfare.  As you can see here http://www.sensibleiowans.org/budget_analysis.php defense consumes more money than everything else put together."

I use the word "welfare" as a concept. Yes, the specific TANF program does cost less than defense. However, expenditures for the Social Security and Medicare programs are more than double that of defense.
Here's one for you.  If everyone does not like this price tag and also the tx code, then tell you elected officials we want a flat tax rate accross the board no exemptions, everyone pays their fair share of tax and scrap the current tax code completely.  Plain and simple.  I am for it.  How about you?
This is funny:
QUOTE:
Sounds like a good investment to me.  Get rid of Sadam and kill a few thousand jihadist for $8,000.  I'll gladly pay another $8000 to kill a few thousand more at about .50 cent a piece.
END QUOTE

You haven't paid a dime, if you REALLY want to pay, send a check for $8000 to the US TREASURY, then you have room to talk.  You haven't spent one red cent, your government has BORROWED $8000 for every man, woman and child in this country, that means INTEREST, in this case Interest that keeps on adding up.  Saddam was meaningless, he was a big mouth with no substance, kind of like the White House guy, he was a good cork on the Iraqis though.  All we have done is release the NEXT wave of islamic warriors against us, and thats all we have done, for your $8000 of Borrowed money.
here here true american thanks for a real thought.
This will be my last post, after working all day and thinking about what I write and who reads it, I have come to the conclusion that "IT AIN'T WORTH IT", there is very little real news on this site, the people who hide behind fake names are cowards and I will not persuade anyone this election cycle. I have so many better things to do, walk the dog, go hunting, ride horses, wave to my neighbors who drive by, talk to my wife, go to town for ice cream. Life is to short and first read really doesn't want to give us real news. As John Goodman said in 'oh brother were art though' "see you in the funny papers".
One more thing, as my Grandmother used to say
"vote early-vote often". Good luck to everyone who used their real name and location here.
The $2.4 trillion should be paid by user fees imposed on the supporters of this fiasco:

1) jerry/corpus christi texas
2) Jihad Killer and Loving it
3) elected and appointed members of the Bush administration
4) elected and appointed members of the al-Maliki government
5) the Republican candidates for President in 2008, except Ron Paul
6) Halliburton, Blackwater, and the rest of the war profiteers
7) etc., etc., etc.

In other words, put up or shut up!
Why is it never poor Bill, or poor John?
Not even withh bills you must pay and johns you must clean.

Nope just POOR RICHARD!
I bet Brad Lawrence of Pleasanton California is all talk and not one of the people who will bother to lend a hand at the rally on Saturday.
Renewable energy sources appear more expensive than energy from oil if you dont consider the military cost to get the oil.  For 2.4 trillion dollars you can get a shot at the last cheap oil on the planet or you can provide solar power to every household in the US.
