Biden jumps into the fray on Iran

From NBC's Mark Murray

Today, Biden released a statement criticizing Clinton's yes vote on the Kyl-Lieberman measure -- and also Obama for not voting on it. "I voted against the amendment to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization because I don’t trust this administration not to twist its words into a justification for war. Do you think this president abided by the spirit of the 1998 Iraqi Liberation Act?... Unlike Sen. Clinton, I don’t trust this administration to follow the plain meaning of the law. And unlike Sen. Obama, I believe this was a vitally important vote – not one to miss and then complain about later."

Biden adds, "Ratcheting up tension with Iran plays right into President Ahmadinejad’s hands. It allows him to distract the Iranian people from the terrible failures of his leadership.  And it keeps oil prices high, which just lines the pockets of Iran’s government. It’s hard to think of a more self-defeating policy."

Senator Biden, that's just the sort of plain talk and common sense we have NO USE FOR in modern America.

Tell us there's an Iranian under every bed - THAT'S what we want to believe.

If Jesus were here, he'd tell us to incinerate them, or at least poke their eyes out for making Georgie so upset.
Thank you Mr. Biden, we know you voted against it.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=5c0eLVYbnI4
98 senators made the vote for the resolution..

But Obama didn't.

Now he complains that we wasn't given enough notice.
It was enough notice for 98 senators, but maybe he thinks he's 'special'
Look at the congressional record.  Obama was told the vote was on hold indefinitely, then after he left for New Hampshire, REID, who's son Rory runs the Clinton campaign in Nevada, suddenly called it back up for a vote, knowing it was impossible for Obama to get back in time.

Obama clearly and strongly said that he would not vote for the amendment before the vote and Biden and Dodd and CLinton all know.  Biden and Dodd agree with Obama.  Clinton is very naive for voting for this.  A vote for Clinton is madness.

Obama is my vote, but Biden and Dodd would both be better than Clinton as well.
'... It allows him to distract the Iranian people from the terrible failures of his leadership...'

As opposed to allowing Hillary Clinton to distract the American people from the failures of HER 'leadership'...

'...And it keeps oil prices high, which just lines the pockets of Iran’s government...'

as opposed to lining the pockets of the oil companies, where those profits belong.....

But, Joe you forgot to mention the 2002 Iraq war vote .....
Say it ain't so, Joe
then it seems that there is someone that really worry about people and he is doing also something about it. You are right Biden. People must ask themselves: "What kind of president is this man, that even senators don't trust him" and what kind of democracy is this that a small group can do anything that they want, even if people, congress and the whole world be against them? You must think about it again. There is a hole in this system and until you don't find it, you will got the same troubles. Believe me, this system need big help. Congress do something real, before a new war starts, this one may be much different.
Tuck:

Actual 98 Senators. McCain missed the vote as well. The vote on KLA was announced at 12:14 and held at 12:44. This after having been postponed for the foreseeable future by Senator Reid.
How do we seriously not follow this guy as the most competent leader in America today? I don't care if he wins, I just want people to follow his lead. He has been the only one making the pragmatic, objective and reasonable solutions to Americas issues.
Obama was given 30 minutes notice on this vote.  It is ridiculous that the media seems to omit this fact from every report.
Maybe the Iran war vote has legs .....

Hillary must be sweating this vote
Please feel free to pile on, Democrats !!

Her campaign says she's moving from 'primary campaign' mode to 'general election' mode.
That means she's changing her positions for a different 'auadience'

First, she lies to the Democrats (primary mode),
Then she wants to lie America (general election mode),
Finally, she wants to lie to the world (Presidential mode)

Sorry, Hillary you're not making it out of 'primary mode' lying.......

Thank you Dan, TX for providing the facts about Obama's missing the vote and putting Tuck in his place (i.e., where there is no light).
Obama/Webb '08.
Biden is right on this - regardless of how he voted in 2002.  At least he learns from experience. I am appalled that ANY Democrat would vote for such a measure now. This administration has proven that they cannot be trusted.  They are incompetent, arrogant, self-righteous, and in power - a dangerous combination.  Come on, Democrats, show some spine!  BUSH AND CHENEY ARE CRIMINALS! If you are not for IMPEACHMENT then you are either as bad as them, or simply uninformed.
Sen. Biden: You don't want to start a war with Iran (I agree), but you don't want to impose strong sanctions (I strongly disagree).  So what do you propose: just sit around and hope that Ahmadinajed and his Islamofacist masters change their minds and stop pursuing a nuclear weapon?  What have you been smoking?  The position staked out by Sen. Clinton--vigorous diplomacy backed up by real sanctions with real teeth--is the only available option that makes sense.  I know, I know--it won't sell in Iowa.  Tough--you're not running for President of Iowa, you're running for President of the United States.  A tricky little detail that only Sen. Clinton seems to appreciate.
When I read this I thought it sounded like a reasonable, sensible statement and wondered what negatives could be derived from it. Didn't take long to find out!

"Reaching for straws..."  Huh?  No sure what that's about.

"Thank you Mr. Biden, we know you voted against it."   How many times have we read about how Senator Clinton voted for it, Senator Obama didn't vote?.  But it is not okay for one of the other candidates to mention how he voted?

"But you forgot the 2002 Iraq vote."  Was he the only member of the Senate who voted for that resolution and if not, is he the only one who has forgotten his vote?  I don't think so.

All of these candidates who are said to be trailing in the polls have as much right to state their opinions and positions (and have them heard) as the candidates who are supposedly leading in the polls.

I trust Biden to make the right choices and be there for us when it counts.
Charlie.... cmon your just another crazy lib, conspiracy theorist, that is very naive and ignorant.  You like most of you others with this disease should just stick to listening and not voicing your uniformed thoughts.  Biden is just not doin it because like the rest of the dirty dems you all want the US to fail in everything as long as Bush is in power...
Hey i just heard, Bush started the Califonia fires, global warming, and he lied about landing on the moon.  In fact there is no moon it's just a gov conspiracy to confuse democrats.  Did you know Bush started both World Wars.  WOW! amazing!
Biden's got it right and I'm glad he slammed Obama..Edwards, Biden and the other candidates actually showed up and voted no.. Obama is constantly chastising Hillary for her vote, but he never showed nor spoke out against the Resolution before..

"Senator Obama was silent on the [Lieberman/Kyl] measure when it was considered on the floor. Despite serving on the Foreign Affairs Committee, he wasn't involved in Senate negotiations or discussions over the bill's language. He didn't speak out against it before it was voted on -- he didn't even return from the campaign trail to vote. He didn't speak out against it at a nationally televised debate that night or defend himself from an attack during the debate on his missed vote. In fact, he waited more than nine hours after the vote was over to issue a statement about it."

And: "If Senator Obama believed the measure was as dangerous as he says, wouldn't he have had some obligation to stand up, speak out, and fight against it? So perhaps something else is at work: politics."

he only put out a statement afterwards.. Too bad though, he already said that he wouldn't rule out using strikes against Iran and voted not to allow Iran to have nuclear weapons..

Don't bash someone that has the same stances on the issues that you do Obama..

And Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich are the only candidates that voted against the Iraq war....

I like Biden too!
Despite phone calls from both Clintons -- Bill and Hillary -- Mayor Michael B. Coleman will endorse Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination at an Obama campaign rally today in Columbus.

Comparing Obama to two Democratic icons, Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, Coleman called the Illinois senator "a one-of-a-kind who comes along only every few generations."

"Every once in a while, a figure comes in history who is a galvanizing and uniting force, an inspirational person who lifts up peoples' hopes, and I think that person is Barack Obama," Coleman told The Dispatch.

Coleman, who is challenged by Republican Bill Todd in his run for re-election on the Nov. 6 ballot, will introduce Obama at an 11 a.m. rally and fundraiser today at the Columbus Convention Center. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students; doors open at 10:30 a.m.

Two Democratic mayors of cities bigger than Columbus, Richard M. Daley of Chicago and Adrian M. Fenty of Washington, D.C., also have endorsed Obama.

Senators should have to pay 20,000 dollars for each missed vote!  Why the hell don't they do their jobs! Senator Clinton has only missed 28, I find that unacceptable also.
If I am not present to do my job my ass is grass!
Running for election is not an excuse.
Joe, DC

I agree that something needed to be done but I don't know how strong our sanctions against Iran are, given that we are, in a sense, going it alone with them. For some time, the administration has said that there needs to be UNIFIED pressure on Iran to stop its nuclear program. By acting on our own, are we not playing into the hand of the Iranian leaderhsip who are intent on turning all their people against the US?  Might it not have been more prudent to wait until other countries were willing to join our effort to sanction Iran?
Senator Biden the dead women and children of Waco know exactly what you did.  Your not pulling the wool over anyone's eyes.
Hillary's plan for rural America would probably look a lot like Waco.
Hey PeteB - I heard your Senator looks for sex in airport men's rooms. Just another filthy rumor, I'm sure.

(I agree - Bush isn't responsible for anything, including his own actions.)
I am so tired of Obama blasting other people for votes he never made.  He wasn't in the Senate for the IWR vote, how was he to know how he would have voted?
He wasn't privvy to the same conversations and debates that went on in Congress at that time.  He may have changed his mind.  We will never know.
And now this.  Obama is an empty shell.  And Hillary says whatever she must to win votes.  No thanks.

Biden 2008!
"It’s hard to think of a more self-defeating policy."
-- if there is one, Bush will think of it. The man's incompetence has no bottom.
"Obama was given 30 minutes notice on this vote.  It is ridiculous that the media seems to omit this fact from every report.

Doug Crimm"

Whether Obama was given 30 minutes notice or not is interesting, but it ignores the fact that Biden was told the Senate would take up his Iraq resolution on September 19th, he had to cancel Iowa appearance scheduled on the 19th and get back to DC.  Then he was told the vote would happen on the 20th, so he again had to cancel Iowa appearances. On the 20th he fly to Iowa late in the afternoon for the AARP forum (which Obama skipped)and immediately afterward flew back to DC, because the measure was now going to come up on the 21st. Each day he was told they would take it up, and finally it came up on the 26th. Biden canceled 5 days of previously scheduled Iowa campaign events, because the Biden Iraq plan vote kept getting delayed. This happens in DC.
hey PeteB:  not Bush's fault:  It's His Handlers, i hope you can fathom something simple like that.  (btw i'm a blue collar working guy, have been for the last 30 yrs or so, so don't "label" me with any of your whatever categorizations, they're just dumb)
By george, stupidity is great!,--Just show up with an umlimited supply of "faith" and you're all set!-  Not!! (that's why tons of people have left (or gotten the boot)from his administration--Right?? -
Joe Biden has more foreign policy experience in his little finger than ALL of the candidates put together. I love these posters who are putting him down. Thank God for people like Joe Biden. We need more Joe Bidens in the Senate. And we need THE Joe Biden behond the desk in the oval office!!
Tell it like it is Joe!!
Hey Joe in DC
You think Americans are going to back yet ANOTHER war in the Middle East?  HRC is way off on this one.  Telling George Bush that the Iranian army is a terrorist organization is like giving him a START ONE WAR, GET ANOTHER ONE FREE card.
Joe Biden; An American President
http://youtube.com/watch?v=OtGCaqOdIJ4
If you think oil prices are high now, wait until Bush bombs Natanz.

Thank you Senator Clinton, for letting the President know that the Senate will be shocked, shocked, if he takes their silly little resolution seriously and uses it as cover to go to war.  After all, if one-third of the Iranian military is a "terrorist organization," who could complain if the President used his AUMF authority to go after terrorists?

Senator Obama tried to have it both ways.  One:  I would have voted against it.  Two:  But I support the terrorist designation.  That's the worst problem with the resolution, and he supports it.  But he wouldn't have voted for it.  Reminds me of Hamlet.

Today, Tomorrow, Together.

i keep noticing how you guys in the media never tell people the truth about that voting.  Harry Reid tricked Obama to make sure he was not there to vote to give cover to her majesty.
Why  is it that the press insists on lying for Hillary.
I'm voting for the elephant party, the ride of persian kings. The donkey will only convey poor people and messiahs.
Sara:
Biden actually cancelled those 5 days of appearances because he had a bill that was being voted on at the same time as the Lieberman-Kyl Amendment.  He stayed to vote on his own bill, and while there, voted on Lieberman-Kyl.

When Lieberman-Kyl was postponed indefinitely, as per transcripts from the Senate Floor, Senator Obama flew to New Hampshire.  As you are probably aware, Senator Reid then called for the vote at a little after noon, and it was complete at 12:44 pm.

I wish the Senators who are campaigning could vote from remote locations, but the fact remains that Senator Obama said he would vote against the amendment before the vote occurred.

I like Senator Biden, but my vote goes with Obama.
Pakistan is the ball to keep an eye on, Iran is McCain's baby.
you liberals are just plain crazy & dangerous, I am glad none of you have been in charge the last 6yrs. is your solution to iran to talk for a few years while they develop their nuclear program, then wonder how to deal with them once war breaks out and have our soldiers at risk of a nuclear strike. jack from wyoming you dissapoint me, most from that area have common sense.
Joe Biden:

Shame on you!  You know that the timing of this vote was a set up to embarrass Obama and thereby to distract primary voters from Hillary's continued triangulation for the general election.  You know that Harry Reid set this up, with a 30 minute notice before the vote, so that Obama couldn't possibly be there.  You know that this deprived Obama of a platform for leadership in trying to rally against this idiotic amendment.  You know that Obama's April resolution calling for the State Department to label the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization wouldn't have given this president defacto authorization for the use of force, unlike this Lieberman/Kyl Congressional resolution (calling for force) which Hillary supported.

Joe are you letting yourself to be used by the Hillary machine for political expediency?  Don't you realize that with Bill as her prime minister, any role that you might have in a Clinton administration as VP or Sec'y of State will be worthless?   I've lost all respect for you for this exhibition of 'bad faith'. By criticizing Obama for something over which he had no control and for something on which you two allegedly agree, you compromise your integrity.

This is what Obama is talking about when he speaks about fighting against political scheming and fighting for the 'politics of hope'.  Although Howard Wolfson thinks that the 'politics of hope' means that he should let Hillary get away with all of her lying and bad judgment.  Actually Howard, your Rovian spin is just what Obama would like to eliminate from American politics.  Your spin and mischaracterization is an ingenuous attempt to distract the public from the true issues at hand.  Shame on you too, Howard.  Shame on the entire Hillary campaign.
Obama '08
Joe Biden has earned my trust.  I'm voting for Joe.
Yeah I should have know you are also the gate keeper of public opinion! Big surprise!
What a fing Quagmire with these ?Nazi's in charge this Country is doomed and all you sheep are up for auction! To late to look over your shoulder to see it coming! As for DFL I see nothin new coming out of your corner either. Biden I do have some respect for you yet the system is so currupt I don't see much hope of the Lone Ranger saving us even with the help of your spiritual world Army that you also have with you! I look for leadership from the Heavens and keep forgetting we sold them out TOO! What sick greedy country we have evolved into. Why oh why did I make the mistake of bringing my children into this world with Evil Doers running things oh yeah that was during Clinton years when we had money in the bank (a U.S. owned Bank)and all the sick'o right had to worry about was that our Pres. was getting more than them & I don't mean Billions of foriegn currency? It's hard to move on with the masses still more worried about keeping up with the Jones than whether or not were facing a complete and udder failure of Gov. I guess I can keep some faith in Knowing Mother Nature is Pissed and is not willing to sit around on her Laurels
Yeah...Joe Biden with all that experience..ahem..and how did he vote on the Iraq War resolution? Someone remind me please.
A retired Marine Corps Colonel, a Vietnam Veteran who lives in the mid-west, volunteers at a Veterams Affairs Hospital.  Many of the veterans who reside there have little respect for John McCain.  They think he's a phony.  These are veterans from WWII, Korea and Vietnam.  They are all combat veterans, "Boots on the Ground."  They don't think McCain's time was as tough as he likes to protray over and over again.  They spent their military duty killing and being almost killed --and all around them, the dead.

Sara in Cedar Rapids:

I really, really hope you can get 10 of your friends to come out strong for Biden in the Iowa caucuses.  Thanks for staying on top of all the Biden posts here.  I really believe he's the best candidate of all, regardless of party.

http://www.theseventen.com
I live in Delaware - the land that progress forgot. Maybe Biden can make a difference in Iran since he's not made any here?
Sharon,

I don't fault Obama for not voting on the Kyl- Lieberman Amendment. But the reality is votes get called and postponed in DC all the time. Biden canceled 5 days of appearances, not one day. And he was there to not merely vote on his Iraq plan, but to encourage others to do so.

The point is that Biden has had to cancel many appearances, because a vote was going to be called, and then it wasn't voted on for days, or canceled altogether.

I haven't read the transcript, and I trust you're qouting it accurately, however at the NH debate that same night Obama said nothing about the vote, and his campaign said he had left Washington because he was ill and was resting for the debate. No doubt that aide had his facts wrong.

Whether Obama left early to rest up before the debate, or was tricked by Hillary supporters I don't know, but he didn't vote, and Hillary did, and she voted wrong.

"As you are probably aware, Senator Reid then called for the vote at a little after noon, and it was complete at 12:44 pm." I don't doubt this, but I'm a little curious on the timing, did Reid think that Biden's Iraq plan debate and vote would take longer, and then when it didn't he called the Kyl-Lieberman Amendment?

"Senator Obama said he would vote against the amendment before the vote occurred." Do  you have a cite for this? I'm not doubting it, but the entire amendment came as a surprise to me, and I had not heard one candidate discuss it before the vote on the 26th.

"I like Senator Biden, but my vote goes with Obama."

I also like Obama. And I hope that he continues to point out the differences between himself and Clinton.
