First thoughts: Obama steps it up, again

*** Obama steps it up -- again? How much was the Obama New York Times interview -- in which he told the paper he would begin to step up his criticism of Clinton -- was simply about keeping donors on the reservation? Strategists will tell you that there's no faster way to speak to your donor base than thru the Times. By the way, it wasn’t the first time Obama said he would begin contrasting himself with the Democratic front-runner. From the August 15 Washington Post: "Consistently trailing Clinton (N.Y.) in national polls, Obama (Ill.) has sought recently to draw more explicit contrasts between his views and what he has portrayed as the conventional thinking and behavior that have caused problems for the country, especially in the rest of the world. He did that again in the interview Monday afternoon, defending himself against criticism from Clinton and other Democratic rivals for a series of statements on foreign policy and arguing that Clinton's foreign policy views risk continued international perceptions of U.S. arrogance." Is that Post interview from August evidence that, deep down, Obama doesn’t want to go after Clinton the way his supporters and the media want him to? We’ll find out for sure tomorrow night.

*** Great expectations: Obama has clearly raised the stakes for his performance at Tuesday's MSNBC debate at Drexel. The downside to those raised expectations: What if he fails to land a solid blow at Clinton? That could be how the media covers the debate, from the perspective of whether Obama puts her on the defensive or whether she swats him back. Just in time for tomorrow’s debate, a new University of Iowa poll shows that Iowa is a dead heat for the top Democrats. Clinton is at 28.9%; Obama is at 26.6%; and Edwards is at 20%.

*** Two or three presidents? Here’s an interesting preview of what could end up being the longest general election in this nation's history. Giuliani yesterday took Clinton to task over a promise she made about sending envoys around the world to fix the country's international reputation -- the day after she wins the election. Said Giuliani, "The danger is that you have two presidents conducting foreign policy, one with all the power and no moral authority, and one with no power." What Giuliani is touching on is a problem we've identified numerous times about the frontloaded calendar: the possibility of not two presidents -- but really three (the current one and the two nominees). It's a governing nightmare for the current president, but it also could become a political nightmare for the eventual GOP nominee, unless he is able to paint the Dem nominee as undermining the government (as Giuliani attempted with his critique yesterday). Because if this doesn't work, it'll mean the GOP nominee will be constantly stuck between defending President Bush or criticizing him. That’s not a great choice.

*** Mistakes were made…: However, Giuliani’s critique of Clinton was yet another clever way for him to passively admit "mistakes" -- without owning up to any specific ones. Giuliani said he wasn't "criticizing Senator Clinton" for promising to send envoys as president-elect or "charging her with anything." Instead, he wanted to offer her a chance to correct her statement. "I know I make my own set of mistakes, and I wish I could correct things I've said... Let's give her a chance to explain what she meant and withdraw it," Giuliani added in a conciliatory tone, per NBC/National Journal’s Aswini Anburajan. Giuliani has dealt with his supposed personal problems very deftly to date by constantly owning up to making "mistakes," making any future revelations all part of the "mistake" umbrella.

*** McCain’s disadvantage in Iowa: It’s too bad for McCain that the Iowa GOP's caucus rules are so different from the Iowa Democrats’. McCain probably scores well in the second-choice category with Iowa Republicans. The problem is that there's no "threshold" system for the Republicans, meaning every caucus is a simple straw vote. Without the opportunity to coalesce second-choice supporters -- a la John Kerry and John Edwards in 2004, when Dean and Gephardt didn't make the 15% threshold in some caucuses -- it makes Iowa that much tougher. Still, second place in Iowa appears to be completely up for grabs, and McCain may have little choice.

*** Sports metaphor time: After last night, we have to ask: What if the Democratic primary fight turns out to be as interesting as the World Series? So many of us are convinced that the Clinton- vs.-somebody-else dynamic will happen because it always does. Then again, sometimes a veteran team waltzes into the World Series and simply sweeps the hot newcomer. (Of course, the Sox found themselves down 3-1 to Cleveland in the ACLS; Clinton has yet to face that kind of adversity.) Also, can Mitt Romney take heart in the juggernaut that is the Boston sports scene? Sure, he likes to disavow his Massachusetts credentials, but let's face it: Boston apparently is for winners right now -- with the Red Sox, and even the Boston College Eagles. Will Massachusetts add Romney to their list of winners come February 2008?  Finally, with the Red Sox season at a close, look for renewed speculation of Curt Schilling entering Republican politics. There are still some Republicans holding out hope he'll retire and run against John Kerry.

*** On the trail: It’s a busy day in New Hampshire, where three presidential candidates -- Edwards (at 8:30 am ET), Romney (at 12:30 pm), and Thompson (at 2:45 pm) -- officially file to be on the ballot in the state. Edwards, who’s in the second day of a four-day swing through the Granite State, also gives a speech today in Manchester, in which he will rail against corruption in Washington and a political system that doesn’t work for the people. And in what appears to be the longest concerted effort he has made in ANY state to date, Giuliani spends virtually his entire week in New Hampshire (sans one short stint in Connecticut to pick up an endorsement). Elsewhere today, Obama begins his day campaigning in Cedar Rapids, IA before holding an event in Charlottesville, VA.

Now Obama is pandering to the Xtian crowd... what's left for him to pander too?
This countries government is so full of crap that who really knows who's telling the truth or who really cares . the next president will be enheriting a nightmare of a job, working with a cabinet full of crooks, who will be buying ideas from a third party. America needs to grow up. If Hillary wins, everyone will be happy to see Bill back, because that is the only reason that she will win. Everyone thinks Bill is going to save America. The people love Obama, but realisticly, this country will never elect a black man as president( the race factor will never go away), because the cowardness of the few that run this country; their mind sets will continue to rule forever stain this country. When man started interpreting Gods law for his own self cratfication, we were doomed from the start. Iraq is a loss cause, if the men of iraq continue to have their differences there will always be war within the country. We are held captive by our own power,or greatest weapon, freedom and democracy.Just like lines separate our states from states, America is a country devided against itself. The politians are not suffering, just the American people. From the Huricanes in Katrina, the water droughts of Georgia, and the fires in California. I guess nature is taking its course. The question is ? Whats next to come? And the truth shall set us free.  May the Lord have Mercy on us all.
Poll: Hillary Clinton's Face Still the Spookiest as Top-Selling Candidate Halloween Mask

Hillary would only be acceptable in the white house as Obama's vice president. OBAMA '08
America is waiting for a candidate that tells us the truth: how much of our policies are hijacked by zionist lobbyists, how much of our money is spilled in safeguaring Israel and how much credit and trustworthiness we loose internationally by supporting Israeli terrorism. I do not think Obama has the guts to be this candidate, but any change in that direction would be of paramount importance to the future of our children. Right now only Bush clones like Clinton, Romney and Giuliani are supposed to be frontrunners in the candidacy. That means 4 more years of neglecting our housing, our education, our health care etc. etc. only to spill trillions of dollars with protecting Israeli interests. America wake up before it is too late for our children. Bush and his clones destroy SCHIP and defend ISRAEL.

Yes, where is all the free stuff for the pro Palestinian Liberal Socialists.  Sorry, try using your real name next time you Jew Hating leftist.  Another perfect example of who the real haters and bigots are.  The biggest bigots always seem to be the Progressive Liberals who would most likely beat you to death to prove they know what is right.
Sen. Obama speaks of the contrast between himself and Hillary and she calls it an attack.  Seems that Hillary thinks that she is the only person that can speak of contrast between herself and her apponent.  Sounds a little disingenuous.

Grow up Hillary, you're playing with the big boys now!!!

Tomorrow's debate will be key.  Obama has to capitalize on his surge in Iowa (only 2 pts. behind - although, it may be difficult to translate this into meaning, in terms of caucus delegates).  But I am sure that if he takes off the gloves, Hillary's inevitability aura will be shattered.  If he is able to clearly differentiate himself from her Bush-lite ways (in policy and performance), the road is open for his victory in Iowa (the only race to watch at this time).

Does no one remember the economic fall out after the first Clinton left the office.  All the companies that were involved in scandels during the Clinton administation, that were found out shortly after he left.  The 90's were built upon a false economy.  Just look at ENRON, and Worldcom just to name a few.  Just remember that history repeats its self.
J. Merle Stanley, Westchester, NY: '...*** VOTE FOR FREEDOM, VOTE FOR AMERICA, VOTE FOR DEMOCRACY, VOTE FOR HILLARY! ***...'

Actually, Merle you didn't answer ANY of jerry's questions.
Hillary '..ordered your papers at the warehouse in Little Rock sealed until after the 2008 race...'
Why, Merle ?
Why is she keeping her papers secret until AFTER the ELECTION ?
The Bushies keep blaming Clinton for everything..
It looks like the Clintonistas will do the same thing with Bush and/or Giuiliani....

Some change .....
Some 'Democracy'.....
.... it sounds more like monarchy...

Hillary will be just as secretive and corrupt as Bush or Bill Clinton.
Crooked Hillary will break campaign finance laws just like Bill or Bush or Abramoff.

Some change .......
Let's get rid of the Republican crooks ....
and get some Democratic crooks !!

Lets get rid of Republican insiders....
and get some Democratic insiders !!

Lets get rid of Republican war mongers ....
and get some Democratic war mongers !!

Iran, here we come !!
So people dont want a Bush clinton dynasty huh? Well, we need to end the dynasty with Clinton..and THEN we can stop the so called dynasty. Lets end it with a democrat.
Ricardo:

You have a lot to talk about about; I listened to your lying, retard Lt Governor talking about Iraq and how it got the fires started in California.  Still trying to figure that logic out.....

And merle LOL:

I guess a Money Bundler for Hillary Clinton chasing a naked woman into a convenience store shows you the good moral character of the Hillary campaign team huh? They had a great story on him in the Sunday paper here.  he must be a friend of Bill Clinton's, sounds like his kind of man.

I'm not even going to bother with John B......Bad enough there is one anti-semitic candidate on the democratic party side.......

And Pat:  You should see my witch with the Hillary laughtrack in it, LOL.  I've played it for people who don't know who that is and they think that is a very hideous laugh, made by a person who's not all there.

I can't wait for the negative campaign ads showing Guiliani in drag 4 different times and discussion of his three marriages, his first with a cousin AND the fact that his kids hate him. Oh yea, the G-man will look real good then. Haw, haw!!Go Rudy go!

Is that your drift ?

" We badly need the Clintons in office again."

Clintons, plural?  I made this point on another site.  We only have one President.
Does anyone remember that there is also a football team from the Boston area that is reasonably good? Mass. turns out some good ones, as well as some real losers such as Kennedy and Kerry.
For those that read and understand- the so called Democratic Congress is a waste and is only impeding any progress in health and welfare issues before them. The real issue is the Middle East and the Muslim Extremism programs that are spreading like the CA fires. If someone other than GW doesn't pay attention, who ever won the World Series won't matter.
The only reason Hillary is leading in the polls is because of name recognition (being married to the ex president) and has the opportunity to raise tons of cash from Bill's prior contributor's. So, if it wasn't for Bill, Hillary would be nowhere, period.  The amount of money that is needed to campaign is sinfull.  The total amount of money spent by all of the candidates would maybe build a few schools and provide some heat/electricity to some poor people this winter. Don't ya think?

No genocide here, just ridding the world of rats.
As for the comment posted regarding Congress's low approval rating...the problem is that it includes all the republicans as well.  When asked for approval ratings separating the dems from the repubs, the dems get much higher marks these days.  Congress has tried to do what it can...but for the republican obstructionists in congress and Bush's only use of his veto following the dem take over of congress, the dems would have been able to make good on all of their 2006 promises.

Oh and Jerry - we all know what you do with little dolls that either look like and/or sound like Hillary.  Just keep your perversions to yourself please [note the good humored jab please].
Ahhhh Sierra:

of course I support genocide.......
You have to rid the world of bad people......

What have Shia Lebanese children done to deserve annihilation ?
standing in the way.....

If the Lebanese have any guts, they would massacre all the Hezbollah forces themselves, but they seem to lack a little courage. They have made some strides here lately, but if the terrorists want a piece of Israel, they are committing Gencide on their own people.

Just like I support genocide when it comes to Al Qaeda.......Every last one of them.

Sierra, are you advocating that Al Qaeda commit genocide on us?
Said Giuliani, "The danger is that you have two presidents conducting foreign policy, one with all the power and no moral authority, and one with no power."

Rudy, we already have two "presidents" conducting foreign policy - Bush and Cheney - both with diminishing power and no moral authority. Like it or not, we live in an interdependent world. No one, not even the U.S. President, has "all the power". What a naive view of the world, but then you are taking advise from the same neocons that brought us Iraq!
Still waiting for Iraqi oil to pay for the war?

It would be nice having a President-elect with moral authority that the world could begin turning to for leadership.  The sooner the better!

Not if these two netwits manage to lie their way into office again.
Jerry we don't need any foreign assistance to wipe out "the rags", we got Elmer Cheney and he's got a shotgun. We'll just send him there to do the dirty work.  Then again he's only used to accidentally shooting his allies, so I think the rags are safe.

By the way, do you have a day job or do you just work alone in your basement?

Jerry

With racist comments about rags you show an intelligence level equal to. . . a 3rd grader!  Does name calling make you feel better? If you have no valid point, then resort to name calling.

Bush ignored where the threat to US security came from:  the Taliban that 6 years after we went after it is now almost back to full strength?  Why? Because your boy Dubya goes after the weakling in his Axis of Evil and not those with WMD.  WE are bogged dopwn in Iraq, we do not have the resources we need in Afghanistan, the rest of the world initially supported going after the Taliban and now enjoys watching Dubya and the US get embarrassed, and now all the Repubs are running as Dubya clones.  Yes, let's have more of the same.  Are you ex Navy still living in Corpus because that would be the only reason to live there.

If the US electorate was really into politics, it would vote out every incumbent regardless of party next year, get a Dem for Pres, and watch the pols scramble for voter support and maybe listen to us now and then.  I realize it won't happen but it clearly would send a strong message that we are fed up with the Iraq war (Bush's Blunder), no plan for SS and Medicare, no viable education plan, no health care plan, budget deficits, continuation of the decline of the dollar, and the "My way or the highway" method of international relations.  That might work with kids but it does not work with other sovereign nations.  We don't always need to agree with other countries but we also do not need to embarrass them for disagreeing.
No attacks on anybody, ony thing I must know is why ???are we spending Billions of US tax dollars on a war thet will never and instad get the moneys in our direction and get US citizens health coverages for all with this monies we would have superb coverages and peoples of our country will wote for the proper person to represent our country in this crazy world.

CLINTON WILL LOSE THE GENERAL
if she is nominated.

Nothing would motivate republicans to come out and vote like being able to cast a vote against the Clintons.  Alot of republican voters are disenfranchised by their party, and quite a few will probably stay home on election day-UNLESS Hillary is on the ticket. Then they'll come out to vote against her. On the other hand, there are alot of anti-Hillary dems who see voting for Hillary as voting for another Bush term, and they WON'T VOTE IN THE GENERAL if Hillary is the nominee.

DEMS, don't be foolish. As much as you can't stand the republican party, not all americans feel the same.  Dems will win the general by offering change- NOT THE CLINTONS.

The Clintons are NOT CHANGE!!!

Looking at a ticket between Guilliani, Romny, or Huckabee, or the CLINTONS, the average independant voter will vote for the new face on the scene, not a rewind to 10 years ago.

BUSH/CLINTON/BUSH/CLINTON IS NOT CHANGE!!!

Contrary to what alot of dems seem to think,

Dems CAN LOSE the general election.

And they may very well do just that if Hillary is nominated.

I wish everyone would give Ron Paul a serous look. He has some good ideas about smaller government.

Why do you think jihasist recruiting is up ya moron? GW has given the enemy plenty to cheer about, so at this point he has to pay attention.  Here's an example of GW's attention span: "Mission Accomplished" 2002.
Hillary will be a great president.

HILLARY 08!!
Jerry Jerry Jerry ... this has nothing to do with the Calif Lt Governor... this about you ... your losing team (both in baseball and in political party). YOu have this fascination with Hillary ..why Jerry ..are you not getting any????

and Dan in Pepsi Cola ... I stand corrected ...my apologies. Is it part of the Republican Platform to support candidates who defend, protect and hire child molesters ..... not sure if the G man will survive that one ...once Hillary lets it be known that voting for the G man is like supporting Mark Foley ...

"Considering it is the rags" Bill, Albany if you can't see the racism in that remark then you are beyond hope as well.
YOu heard me, I said CLINTONS and I meant it that way. AND.... it looks like another repub is retiring soon, Tancredo from Colorado is going down.Bye Bye...
jerry, would I be prejudiced against those of Hispanic decent if I spoke out against an epithet directed at African-Americans?  You used a blatantly racist description of Arabs as "rags".  There is nothing anti-semitic about objecting to your dehumanization of a different race.  You, Truth be spoken, and all of the others who defend that comment are revealing yourselves for the ugly fascists you are.
No more Cinton or Bush!!!! Haven't we had enough of these families.  Let's get some new blood in the "The House" and start fresh!!

Possibly the most intelligent thing posted on here today.
Sadly, when it is typed "Clintons" it is speaking the truth. Hillary won't ride into the White House in 2009 because of anything she says or does. It will be because everyone will think back to life in the 1990s. Outside of the scandals in Washington, life for the average American was pretty decent. People think that voting for Hillary will give us those warm, fuzzy feelings all over again. It won't. I can even see it being worse, yes worse, than the last 8 with Dubya.

If she won't answer a single question in a debate posed by a reporter or an opponent, what makes you people seriously think she'll have the balls to stand up to our enemies or to the Republicans in Congress? (HINT: SHE DOESN'T!)

Look at her voting record. Instead of standing with her Democratic colleagues and actually trying to end the Iraq war and telling Dubya where to shove his cash requests, she gives him blank check after blank check. If she's about "change", she's had 6+ years in the Senate to get it going with either her vote or her opportunity to introduce legislation on the Senate floor. She's done neither.

Even now, she's given very few details of her own policy agenda if elected, instead choosing to consistently attack the details of what her two chief rivals would do. While their ideas aren't perfect, they're the very kind of starting point the country needs to begin moving in the right direction. We want positive government, not 4 more years of the garbage we, and the rest of the world, have had to endure.
Ralph Baum, you are a big help --- not.
jds and Lisa, why don't we wait til after Clinton is president to end the Bush/Clinton dynasty? Now that sounds fair and square. Each can have a go at it twice. NO REASON to stop the dynasty now you sneaky repubs. I call for NEW BLOOD after Hillary is president... for 8 yrs.
I've had enough of "those two familys" after a democrat gets 8 more years, then I'm all for a fresh start.
Hey jerry/corpus christi texas, the more you blog the smaller your IQ number appears to be.
Any Dem is going to make your boy George appear exactly what he is and has been.  Incompetent. Anyone who voted for him is irresponsible.  Anyone thinking about trying to put another Bush in the White House is, a terrorist.  You don't strike me as being a person who can make over $225,000 per year, so when Hillary gets the Presidency, your buying power will improve, cause it sure hasn't over the last 7 years.  Is your middle name "lemming"?  It appears to me that the Republicans have given up on keeping the White House given the list of candidates running for that office.  The best Republicans can come up with is another actor?  Doesn't matter which of them gets the nod, they are all poor actors and ugly to boot.
Oh man, I love how the republicans are screaming about ending the dynasty. What a joke! Seems to me the democrats get another turn.
Yes Jerry, you need to keep your degrading remarks to Republicans, Bush, Conservatives, the religious (except Muslims), White males, Southerners, and patriots.  Remember Jerry only Leftist Progressives are allowed to degrade, make fun of, or pass judgment on others.  Once you keep within the liberal progressive view everything is permissible except maybe the truth.  Yes only the queens of bigotry, the liberal left, may cast their hatred without fear of reprimand by their fellow bigots.
The point that is being missed is that Hillary is a woman.  She approaches politics from a different view.  She can't be compared to anyone.

Men are so silly - they compare her to men.  But, she is not a man and that is a good thing.  Men will now find out how a woman will do things.  Perhaps it will be better, or maybe not.

Still, its about time we got a shot.  You guys have been at it for all time and look what a mess you have made.  Hillary has nowhere to go but up.
Hey jerry/corpus christi texas, the more you blog the smaller your IQ number appears to be.  I have you just below GW in single digits.

And those of you quoting low approval numbers of Congress saying that the Dems have not done anything good .  .  . well when they can't get enough votes to override the asshole's veto because they didn't have the opportunity to get veto proof majorities in one mid-term election is a stupid pre-judgement.  After the 2008 election they will be able to undo all the crap that's been assembled while the Reps had all the power, and messed up . . . big time.  Once we get enough backward thinking conservatives out of Congress, you will see how wrong you are about Hillary being another Bush.  That statement is so preposterous, only a pundit could say it without puking.
Smile Bush loves you.

Actually Sierra,.....jerry's questions are rhetorically contrived POPPYCOCK that have NOTHING to do with the issues at stake in the next election. (....and you know it.)
But, I see you like to attack a fellow liberal, and in particular A Liberal Democrat who supports Hillary.
Therefore, in the spirit of fair play let's ask a few questions about Obama that NEVER seem to get answered.
Like, why didn't he admit his relationship with Norman Hsu, instead of trying to let the media blame everything on Hillary?
Mr. Hsu's influence over Obama went far deeper. In 2005, he helped host a California fund-raiser for Mr. Obama, where he introduced the senator to Mark Gorenberg, a venture capitalist who is now one of Mr. Obama's biggest fund-raisers.
Oh, and how come we never hear about The Obama/Rezko Scandal?
The story is that Obama has ties to Rita Rezko, the wife of Tony Rezko, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich's former chief fundraiser. Tony Rezko has been indicted in a massive scandal involving giving government jobs and contracts to Blagojevich's contributors. Apparently, the Rezkos live in a mansion in the suburbs north of Chicago, but on the same day that Obama bought a $1.6 million house on the south side of Chicago, Rezko's wife bought the vacant lot next door. Then Obama bought 10 feet of the Rezko lot, and Obama has now been paying for the mowing of all of the Rezko lot, though he says that he has been meaning to divide the costs.
Hmmmmmmmm, interesting, huh?
.....and why won't Barrack Obama hold his hand over his heart while the "Star Spangled Banner" is played, or wear an American Flag on his lapel?
Could it be that Obama feels no love or patriotism for his country? It sure looks that way, doesn't it?

THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS THAT IF YOU WANT TO PLAY "PERSONAL ATTACK" POLITICS...THERE'S MORE THAN ENOUGH MUD TO SLING RIGHT BACK AT YA'..........
