First thoughts: Debate at Drexel

Posted: Tuesday, October 30, 2007 9:21 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, Domenico Montanaro, and Julia Steers
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- *** The Debate At Drexel: Tonight at 9:00 pm ET, the Democratic presidential candidates -- minus Gravel -- will gather here at Drexel University in the City of Brotherly Love for their seventh debate of this campaign season (or eighth, if you count the boisterous AFL-CIO forum at Chicago’s Soldier Field). Moderated by NBC’s Brian Williams, with additional questions from NBC’s Tim Russert, the debate airs on MSNBC and will be livestreamed on MSNBC.com. To see where the Dem race now stands, it’s worth recalling the first debate of the cycle, which was held almost exactly six months ago in Orangeburg, SC. Before that debate, Clinton held a narrow five-point lead over Obama (36%-31%) in the NBC/WSJ poll. Since then, however, she has expanded it. The latest NBC/WSJ poll has her leading Obama by 21 points (44%-23%), and Edwards by 28 points (44%-16%). Other surveys have her with even wider leads over her rivals. There is no doubt about it: These debates have had an impact on the race.

VIDEO: NBC News/National Journal campaign reporters, Athena Jones, Aswini Anburajan and Tricia Miller discuss the debate preparation of the Democratic candidates.

*** Channeling John Elway? With this kind of lead, tonight's debate is as much about Clinton's challengers as it is about her. Like a football team down by two touchdowns heading into the fourth quarter, it's mostly up to that team to erase the deficit (although miscues by the team that’s ahead certainly can help the comeback). As we noted yesterday, Obama’s interview with the New York Times -- in which he promised to step up his criticism of Clinton -- has raised expectations for the Illinois senator. In fact, the pressure on Obama has never been greater than it is tonight. This might sound far-fetched, but there is a real chance that this race begins or ends tonight. Many in the Beltway chattering class will issue a verdict of "game on" or "game over" after tonight. It's probably premature -- and not fair -- but it's something Obama's folks probably are now realizing. And it may be why just in the last 12 hours, we've sensed a downshifting a tad of just how aggressive Obama's going to be. See Axlerod in Howard Fineman’s piece.

*** If You’re Name Isn’t Clinton Or Obama: It’s also worth keeping an eye on Edwards, who yesterday delivered a tough speech aimed directly Clinton, charging her for taking more money from Washington lobbyists than any other presidential candidate. Ironically, perhaps the most lethal attack Edwards has leveled to date on Clinton is getting overshadowed by the MSM’s obsession of Obama versus Clinton. The good news for Edwards is he may actually have the chance of standing back and watching Obama swing at Clinton. And if Obama misses, he can pounce and try to fill the void. With everyone expecting Obama to be the aggressor, does Edwards -- or Biden, Dodd, or someone else -- steal the spotlight?

*** Iran And Social Security: The issue that will likely produce much of tonight’s back-and-forth is Clinton’s vote last month on the measure designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, which pits her versus all of her Dem rivals. Social Security might also provide some sparks: In recent days, Obama has given speeches, and even released a TV ad, jabbing at Clinton’s refusal in the past debate to propose specific solutions to fix Social Security. In response, the Clinton camp went up with its own TV ad in New Hampshire that changes the subject to -- whom else? -- George Bush. “When George Bush threatened to privatize Social Security,” the announcer says in the ad, “Hillary was there fighting every step of the way to stop him.”

*** Rudy’s Foils: Giuliani is proving to be very adept at using his tenuous front-runner status -- most recently by taking shots at the Democratic front-runners. Per NBC/NJ’s Matthew Berger, Rudy yesterday went after Clinton, Edwards, and Obama on Iraq and Iran. “Suppose Hillary Clinton and John Edwards’ new position were there positions back then, that it was a mistake to take him out,” Giuliani said. “Would we be dealing with Saddam Hussein becoming nuclear right now?  If Iran was becoming nuclear, what would he be doing?” While Hillary Clinton uses George Bush as her foil, Giuliani uses Clinton and the other Dems.

*** Is Huckabee For Real? It depends who you ask. The media love him, and more Republicans are warming to him. But that’s not true for fiscal conservatives like the Club for the Growth, which yesterday released yet another negative press release on the ex-governor. This a classic good news/bad news issue for Huckabee. The good news: He’s making enough progress to get attacked. The bad news: He doesn’t have the resources to fight these charges, making it possible that his surge ends before it begins.

*** On The Trail: Elsewhere today, Edwards holds a town hall in New Hampshire before traveling to Philly; Giuliani raises money in New York; McCain also fundraises in New York and meets with leaders of Jewish-American organizations; Paul appears on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno; Richardson files to be on the New Hampshire ballot; Romney raises money in New York City, Chicago, and Boston; and Thompson holds a rally in Newport Beach, CA.

Ironic that people so frequently claim that Fox News is less biased than other outlets, considering that FN viewers are less likely to actually know what's going on than those who watch the Daily Show or Know the Most".

-----------------------------------------------------

Nobody is claiming that foxnews is less biased but what we are saying is we know what they stand for and they are being honest about it.

What is ridiculous is for media to tell us they are unbiased, yet, do other wise. Like i said ealier, if you want to know the eal facts go to the website below.

www.bbc.co.uk.

The rest of the media outlet in America is nothing but bogus. I can't wait for new America BBC broadcast. I want facts not spin. No more corporate agenda.
Numbers are deceiving, votes are decisive. lets calm down here fellow political junkies, we are the only ones right now who are listening, once the voting starts you will see a major difference in the numbers. The media is at fault for their laziness in reporting and we must always remember that all information is manipulated and we must read between the lines. Right now the only people benefiting from all this is the news media.
Hey "LOOKING FOR TRUTH"  MSNBC has Scarborough and Tucker with their own show.  How many shows does FOX give the Liberals?  1/2 at best when they let Colmes talk.  Chris Matthews debated Anne Coulter on his show so I'm a little confused and Pat Buchanan is also a contributor and analyst.  Is it their fault that FOX is too over-the-top for them?

Anyone who invokes the name of Bill O'Reilly with truth is not looking for it.  Why won't he release the details of his plea deal?  Yet he touts morality with kids?  If you consider hypocrisy as truth then ask him to run a blog.  And don't let the door hit you on the way over.

If you're so concerned about 'truth' try the FOX BLOGS.  Do they even have a forum for open debate on their site?

John, don't be so easily manipulated.  Anyone can manipulate or edit something in order to come up with a result.  You have to ask who is behind the survey, how were the questions asked, were the results manipulated.  Obviously you didn't ask any questions.
"...and the next one will have her up by at least that."

Do you have access to information that we don't, or are you Nostradamos reincarnate?

No- I just am able to read and not blinded by a cult of personality.

Why don't you post how people can learn all about Hillary's positions on the issues by going to her OPPONENTS websites again? What was the idea there anyway?

You don't need to be a prophet to see the trendlines of the Obama campaign. You only have to be able to read and do simple math.

I am sure that you too are looking forward to tonight's debate. I can't wait!

Van
The attacks against Huckabee by far right wing conservative groups like "The Club for Growth" only pander to the elitists on Wall Street.  Huckabee is taking the "rank and file" Republicans (lower class, lower middle class and the middle class) by storm.  He's appealing to the majority of everyday working Americans...who vastly outnumber the elitists.  I just went to Huckabee's website, and he's already raised $1mil this month in online contributions alone...which is more than he raised in TOTAL for all of the 3rd quarter.  Sounds like Huckabee is really catching fire.

I used to be on the fence between Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney...but I think I'm on board with Huckabee now.  As a working class guy myself, I appreciate his position on the issues.

A perfect examble of how stupid some people are.  But then again I see your from Boulder and that says a lot.  You far left idiots are no better than the right wing idiots.  Both of you are what's wrong with this country.
What spin the news media is putting on the democratic race.  If you look on the the Real Clear website, Hillary was ahead in Iowa by 5.2 on Friday.  Today, that number is 7.4.  The newest poll shows Hillary up 10.  Why is the media using the University of Iowa poll - the only poll that shows the race extremely close.  They have promoted Obama from the beginning.  Ask yourself this.  If Obama has to announce that he will be tough now - how will he be able to handle the Repulican machine?
Like it or hate it, media in america has not done this country any good. The last time media did anything good to the political process is the impeachment of Richard Nixxon.

They did their home work by following the money. However, today's media are bunch of lazy ass journalist. They are intellectually lazy to the extent that they would rather take a talking point from a campaign or white house rather than do a little digging.

Whatever happen to investigating journalism is dead. I guess Corporate media ownership are part of the blame.
the polls during the 2004 election were all pretty much going Kerry's way when all of a sudden, he lost.

I still remember Tom Brokaw with the deer in the headlight look asking "What Happened!!!!!!"

so for all the polls that are coming out and for all of Van's polling data, people are going to realize that pollsters must think the average American is pretty stupid.  They say tell them what they are thinking, but I am sure they will vote what they feel is right for America.

As far as Hillary is concerned, she should take heed of what happened to Kerry and realize she had better come up with a game plan and soon.......
".....I hope Obama and Edwards do go after (Hillary Clinton).  Americans deserve some answers from this little woman who wants to play with the big boys.

Getting a little desperate, are we jerry?
Not to worry, she'll be a good President.
Chris Matthew is Hillary's puppet. We know all know that. Chris  belong to Bill Clinton's empire.

Van,

Who in the right sense of their mind go to daily kos. Another hate mongering site that have nothing to offer America. My work computer won't even allow me to go there.

How about the Rev father from Oakland, as far as i know he is the biggest gay basher ever. The last time i checked he endorse Hillary Clinton. What say you regarding that? Another hypocritical flap from clinton's machine.

By the way, i don't care about Gay Activist because they are part of the problem. Use division to line money in their pocket. We all know how they've all been raising fund quietly for Hillary. Wait another month before we expose all of you.

Exactly correct 'Stop The Stupidity'.  So tell us, in your research, what polls and survey's are the most credible?  How many polls and surverys have you inquired and how does one contact the pollster's to ask such questions?  Who do we report to if we find the data suspect?  Thanks.
Why no GRAVEL in the Debate?

Were his truthful statements about Hillary's voting to give Bush an open ended license to attack Iran, too much for this media channel to allow him to debate....

What happened to freedom of the press?
I have also began to get my news from other than MSNBC. It is become very apparent how much all there so-called news reporter's have shoved themselves up hillary's ass, never peaking out to listen to the REAL VOTER'S.Even keith has become a hillary ass-wiper. It is truly shameful to watch after all these years of watching NBC. Mike in ( denver), that would be an EXCELLENT way to begin on Barack's part, he should'nt wait & let edwards get the jump on him tho. However, i think we all agree, that this is Not a make or break debate for Barack, who gives a sh-t what these hillary ass-wiper's say, we all know better. The gay ole Party got away with saying thing's loud enough & long enough for the last several year's, however, the American voter woke up to that & won't be manipulated again in that way.

Van,

Not blinded by a cult of personality? Perhaps not blinded, but certainly suffering from glaucoma.

I posted those links because others were asking about her positions, and, well, I found some humor in it. If someone was ignorant enough to search there, then that is their problem.

As to being able to read and do simple math, well, projecting polls has as much to do with math as MTV has to do with music.

And yes, of course I am looking forward to tonight's debate.
"A perfect examble of how stupid some people are.  But then again I see your from Boulder and that says a lot.  You far left idiots are no better than the right wing idiots.  Both of you are what's wrong with this country."

Oooh good one.

A perfect example of how to dodge a question you can't answer.  At least I put where I was from while you hide behind your so-called search for TRUTH.  I debated your statement, only shallow goofballs make general assumptions based on geography.  I find them to be the least credible.
experience/judgement aka Van,

I know you are jobless. Stick to the issues. What is your candidate's  plan on these issues?

Politics of hope give us the audacity to point out the difference without attacking your candidate's flaw character. If we abandon politics of Hope Clinton can't survive the Primary.

I am expecting Hillary's answer to this question. What is her agenda to the following issues? If her supporters/staffs can't tell me the answer, then they are all bunch of talking head.

Iraq-------?????
Iran-------?????
Energy-----?????
Ethics-----?????
Foreign Policy---?????
Lobbyst influence-----?????
Rural America--------??????
Urban America -------??????
And yes, of course I am looking forward to tonight's debate.

Yeah or we'll have a Hillary light liberal in the White House.  The evangelicals are having fits with his wardrobe.  HE BETTER HAVE A GAME PLAN TOO!!!
Oh for Gods sake Bee go Hillary.com if you so need to KNOW her positions.  I know them and Obamas so what the heck is your point besides the one on your head!
You are preaching devise politics so troll or repuke we are dismissing your rants.

John, I agree with you that the media are victim of their laziness. Thus, they rely on the paid pollester to make news. Pathetic!!!
I have been to hillaryclinton.com.......

And I am still waiting for answers to my questions...
Experience/judgement aka HP BOSTON,

Finally you show your true color. Obviously, you are as deceptive as Hilly Clinton.

Why can't you tell me where she stand? More of the same won't get her elected. I have been to her website, i see nothing but fluffs. The only policy that make sense is Healthcare the rest are vague.

See, if you can't even mention where she stands on issues, how do expect millions of America to know? Wait till you see more ad goes up in NH. I can't wait till the ad start rolling.

If you guys think she has this nomination rap up, think again. We're just getting started.

NUMBER 4?!!!  WOW THAT'S AWSOME!!!!!!  You're some kind of slueth. It seems you know an awful lot about this stuff.  Why do these demographics of "progressives" interest you so much?  Where does your city fit?  And you still never answered my question about the FOX blogashere.  You rant on and on about MSNBC yet here you are indulging in their effort to give you free speech.  The very thing you complain about being 'imbalanced' (like a broken record) is the very thing that is allowing you to express your views.  I'd say thats fair.  Where's FOX hun?

Nuff said.
Bee wrote:

Here, here Bee, I don't think that people realize Obama had less than 25% of support up to a month before the election when he started his run for US Senate, when people got to hear his message, he ended up with 80-90% support. People better look out!!!

Todd GE MSNBC DNC will not stop us - look outside at $1,000,000.00 & MORE people than IN hall
The only reason another candidate can "steal" the spotlight is because the MSM shines their spotlight on celebrity candidates instead of candidates of substance.
Stop the stupidity; Here http://people-press.org/about/ is where you can start to research the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press.  I already know who they are.  They are nonpartisan.  Your complaint is mere disregard for results with which you do not agree.  BTW, you can take the survey yourself online.  There are no questions that are open to interpretation or subjective in nature.  FACT; Fox News viewers know less about current events than people who get their facts from almost any other source.  REAL LIFE EXAMPLE; Yesterday my wife was severely reprimanded by 5 Republicans for disagreeing with their statement that Barack Obama is a Muslim.  They all heard it on Fox News as well as a variety of talk radio programs so it must be true.  Obama is hiding it very well since he's been a member of the same United Church of Christ congregation for over 20 years.
The media is at fault for their laziness in reporting and we must always remember that all information is manipulated and we must read between the lines. Right now the only people benefiting from all this is the news media.

correct you are John, I give up on this driveling group.  See ya at the real polls.  Vote early and often.
I am disappointed that MSNBC has decided to exclude Mike Gravel from its October 30th, 2007 debate. I think that Mike Gravel made important contributions to the debates in which he was included. He was the first candidate to point out Hillary Clinton's vote in favor of declaring Iran's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization as well as Barrack Obama's absence from this important vote.
what about Steve Colbert? He is a fitting addition to the line-up of jokes running for the Dem nomination.

I quit watching MSNBC for the simple reason that they employ Keith Olbermann.

Meanwhile, it looks like the country is being set up to hate our president for at least another four year term beginning in January, 2009 when Hillary takes office.  From what I can tell, she will start the first day with a 30% approval rating.

Democrats who held their noses to elect her will quickly go back to their MoveOn and Kos world and the other 48-49% who wouldn't vote for her under any circumstances will still feel the same.

Maybe after one term we can call it all even for the Bush and Clinton families and truly move on to find a fresh face to hate.
I was watching Chris Mathews right now and I lost any respect for him. He is pathetically Hilary and the guests in the show there is no qualification for them in the english dictionnary. I am sorry for the MSNBC
Sam Nunn fan:

How dare you insult Stephen Colbert by implying he would be a fitting addition to the Dem jokes!

I have no doubt he leans left but he's really funny and completely in another league.
john S. Alexander, I think you are right about the news media. they want to pick fights between all the candidates so they will have news for their bussinesses. Egging on a fight between combatants from the side lines is their job. The voters have not spoken yet and the media think they can pat themselvs on the back if they confuse the voter with their spin. if the candidates take tthe bait they will lose. Chris Mathews wants Hill and Barack to get nasty with each other to satisfy him. I would say they should throw cold watr on the news by saying she has her campaign and he has his campaign and may the best man or woman win.
I can't get the live stream of the debate from MSNBC.com. Why?
Andrea Mitchell just called Hillary Clinton Supporters Schlitz drinkers and Obama supporters wine drinkers! It is FALSE and shows her low standards and unprofessionalism. She should be shown the door immediately!
