Edwards' target No. 1: Hillary

An Edwards campaign memo from Campaign Manager David Bonior makes clear who the primary target is: Hillary Clinton. And the primary issue: lobbying.

"Unfortunately, the Clinton campaign has made it clear -- through its choices, its words and its silence -- that it intends to defend the broken system in Washington," Bonior writes, "where the interests of the American people are bought and sold every day by an army of lobbyists...."

More: "The real question as we enter tonight’s presidential debate on MSNBC is why, in the face of the great challenges we face as a nation, Senator Clinton chooses to so passionately defend this broken system and the damage that Washington lobbyists are doing to our nation every single day."

The memo also rolls off nine issues, the campaign says it has led on.

Here's the full memo:

EDWARDS CAMPAIGN MEMO
TO: INTERESTED PARTIES
FROM: CONGRESSMAN BONIOR, CAMPAIGN MANAGER
SUBJECT: REAL CHANGE OR MORE OF THE SAME
DATE: 10/30/2007

In this critical election, our nation faces a crossroads. There are two paths ahead, but only one will lead us to the America we believe in and the government we deserve. As John Edwards said yesterday in New Hampshire, the road we choose will determine what kind of country we leave to our children, and whether we restore the promise of this great nation:

“Down one path, we trade corporate Democrats for corporate Republicans; our cronies for their cronies; one political dynasty for another dynasty; and all we are left with is a Democratic version of the Republican corruption machine.

“It is the easier path. It is the path of the status quo. But, it is a path that perpetuates a corrupt system that has not only failed to deliver the change the American people demand, but has divided America into two – one America for the very greedy, and one America for everybody else….Or we can choose a different path. The path that generations of Americans command us to take. We can get up and take our country back. And be the guardians that kept the faith.”

Unfortunately, the Clinton campaign has made it clear -- through its choices, its words and its silence -- that it intends to defend the broken system in Washington, where the interests of the American people are bought and sold every day by an army of lobbyists, instead of taking the path that the American people want – a path that leads to ending the corruption in Washington and bringing the big, bold change we need to America.

The real question as we enter tonight’s presidential debate on MSNBC is why, in the face of the great challenges we face as a nation, Senator Clinton chooses to so passionately defend this broken system and the damage that Washington lobbyists are doing to our nation every single day. It is these lobbyists, the corporate interests they serve, and the policies that they pervert, that are destroying the promise of America. Let us be clear - no candidate for president should be standing with lobbyists, instead of standing with the American people, and believe they are “ready to lead.”

If the American people want to take their country back, they need a leader with the strength to reject the corrupt system, say “no” to Washington lobbyists and finally make our government work for the American people once again. This election is about our hope for a better future for our children -- but we will never build that future until we elect a leader who will end the broken system in Washington.

At the end of the day, the Clinton campaign may attack, but it is only Senator Edwards who has the real strength and right experience to lead this nation, while others seem determined to continue to play the Washington game.

It is this passionate belief that we must lead this nation to greater heights that explains why Senator Edwards has led on issue after issue, and was the first candidate in this race:

1. To refuse to take a dime from Washington lobbyists or PACs;
2. To call on the Democratic Party and all Democratic presidential candidates to say no to lobbyist money;
3. To introduce truly universal health care and be honest about the sacrifice we must make to achieve it;
4. To introduce a bold plan to deal with global warming;
5. To propose policies to end poverty and restore the hope of the American dream for millions of American families;
6. To propose middle class tax relief, and a plan to make sure the wealthiest pay their fair share in taxes;
7. To propose a bold plan for a new global alliance to deal with terrorism;
8. To lead the fight to end the war in Iraq and oppose further funding requests by the Bush Administration that do not have a strict timeline for withdrawal;
9. And to learn the terrible lessons of NAFTA that cost countless of American jobs, and oppose the South Korean and Peru trade deal.
It is this leadership that makes Senator Edwards, the strongest candidate for president, and the only one who is ready to lead the fight for the change America needs.

Where's Hillary's leadership on ANYTHING?
To elect a Washington self serving Paper Hanger would cap off why America is immoral of leadership. We have not one person electable, we are being forced again to vote for a Paper Hanger!

Say NO to Clinton, as her self serving agenda and empty promises are words. her intent is to get her and that perverted scum "BILL" back in the White House! The Clinton's handed over a weak nation and military which they have destroyed in the past. We can't effort 4 years of goose stepping, a Nazi medical system, tax's which serve their agenda's.

Clinton ""hell no"" I would vote for the three monkey's first!!!
You use the system you have, you cannot use the system you wish for. Come on Edwards, get past this petty attack, I want you to be a viable candidate not a talking head. What would you do to change it? Put out a position paper, attacking another democrat will not get my vote, issues not attacks, don't be a republican clone.
Marty, you may not like Clinton but she is a damn good politician, that doesn't make her a demon. I am unhappy with a lot of what has come out of her campaign, I blame the political heads around all the candidates, this is a very different election. More truth as to what they will do will help make this a good election. Lets speak up and tell them. if you have time to blog this spot you have time to bitch dirrectly to the candidates, lets all do that, it may change them from doing more of the same.
WHY WOULD AMERICA WANT AN EXISTING SELF SERVING FAILED PAPER HANGER AS THE NEXT PRESIDENT??

Self serving agenda is not a leadership trait. Clinton has not shown leadership, only conjecture and finger pointing!! One of the ""FIRST"" to tell the people what is wrong ""But always reversing her vote to go along with the other crowd!! Clinton's agenda's are like a lunatic looking to out smart the men with white jackets!

To vote for Gender, America needs not new Paper laws! America must resolve the current situations and failures these present Paper Hangers have put this nation in!

Someome get a straight jacket for this lunatic!!!!!
Exactly Marty from Memphis, John Edwards has led on ALL the issues from the gitgo, but we are told by the MSM that does not matter as the Clinton machine is in overdrive and subsequently inevitable.
Hell no!! I can think for myself thank you very much,
I just hope the rest of my fellow Americans will as well.
John Edwards 2008 " The Peoples President"
A vote for John is a vote for yourself!
Hillary leads the way to the most politically expedient alternative in any situation.
marty,

I would ask the same of Edwards? He fail to win last time he ran, why is he better now?
Great job using this memo. This is fact and substance! Thank you!

Morality, honesty, trustworthiness, fund-raising sources, ability to lead, lobby relationships, and COURAGE TO FIGHT are just as much issues in an election as Iran and health care. John Edwards' challenge of Clinton on these issues is positive, fair, and proper.

Clinton will cry and whine about being "attacked." She's being challenged on real issues, and so far she has retreated! She has not been up to the task. John Edwards will continue to be relentless. If she survives his challenge - and wins - (both surviving and then winning are doubtful), she'll be ready for the general election. A candidate who plays victim and claims that she's being attacked is not worthy to preside over THIS country.

It's time for Clinton to (wo)man-up, show some courage, and fight for the nomination (if she can).
Go John Edwards! The harpies snipe while he leads.
Right On!!
When is MSNBC going to have neutral pundits? I swear everyone on today was a clintonista from Andrea Mitchell to Howard Fineman, Crawford, Rosen, ect. That MSNBC Hillary bias again?
And just when I thought Matthews had stopped drinking the koolaid yesterday and getting some respect on the blogs for his closing comments, he goes and starts tippling the koolaid again today.
I had stopped watching this station completely but, decided to watch the past few days to see if any changes happened.
Still a hard Hillary bias. How sad to see a network lose credibility.
And the continuing put downs of Edwards and Obama on a daily basis as well has not changed either.
why can't we see the debate on nbc. a lot of us can not afford the extra cable expenses. these debates are very important for our future years for our grandchildren. (also for us retired people)

I also would like the candidates to answer a question that is very important to me and millions more, is why can we not vote on the u.s. supreme court every 6 years? we should have a say on this.
Diane,

You should know this by now. Watch FOXNEWS instead
HELLO, is this the same Edwards who ran in 00 & again on 04 and now once more in 08. Were was Hillary in O0 & 04. So now it Hillary,s fault that he still seem to be behind once again. No John I,am sorry to say that she has payed her dues. She has fought just like you on campaigns except, she been doing it a lot longer.Now about changeing Wash. Well Bush said he planned to change the tone and by outside problem he sure has done that. Wake up John get a regular haircut and you might make the cut next time!
someday I will be bored enough to ask (fill in the blank) AZ what a paper hanger is; but not today.
diane, when did Chris Mathews stop being a Bush supporter? I know he has, I just missed the when and why he flipped.
Edward get your head straight and stop being a loser.
Hillary is the way to go, Amen.
Chris Matthews: "What can Hillary do to win?" - "Will this hurt Hillary?" - "Hillary was WONDERFUL!"

The Clintons selling their $ouls to Murdoch has been quite advantageous for Hillary.
But we're voting for a Truth-teller who hasn't been bought! Go Edwards!
Put out a position paper, ...issues not attacks,

Um, Edwards has, in spades. On campaign finance reform, he has proposed that donations up to $100 be matched 8 to 1 and donations be capped again at $1000 per head. That way an ordinary couple would be able to donate (100 + 800 x 2 = 1800) as much as a wealthy lobbyist (1000 + 800 match = 1800).

Up and down the line, Edwards has proposed the most detailed positions, often (as in the case of health care and higher education) quickly parrotted by Clinton. Look at www.johnedwards.com and click on issues.

If you're upset about not enough issues, you certainly can't blame Edwards.
All the fellas want a piece of Hillary...lmao
I will be really disappointed in fellow democrats if we elect Hillary over Edwards. I love MSNBC but they talk up Hillary like she has the best chance to win for democrats when that is not true. Edwards has the best chance and would without a doubt win the presidency if he got the nomination. We need another Kennedy in the white house and i believe Edwards is closest to that...He's our best candidate, vote for Edwards please because If we dont then us democrats get what we deserve. We need a president that reaches out to the people and ask them to do things...Go Edwards
Grace from West Newberry is right, why don't we see this on NBC, they are showing that fat show 'The Biggest Loser'. We are the biggest losers for living with out cable or living without cable because of the rural area we live in. NBC and all the three big networks should hide in shame for providing crappy games shows and luke warm re-dos of old shows with different faces. The executives should get off their lazy butts and make some changes in their attitude on what we americans really want to see. I'm even tired of sports and news coverage. The morning infocrapment shows are just so ignorant as to who is available to watche their show, high priced garbage teenage clothes and the latest technorage and how to dress your dog for Halloween. Are you kidding me, this is what we want to watch? And I want to know why you have to spend millions to send one of your talking heads to the antartic? I am not impressed, i think you waste too much money on creating a sensation. well enough already, I'm out a here!
The best thing about Hillary getting so much publicity is so many people get to see how bad she is.
Look at her standing in the recent MSNBC candidate polls.
Ron Paul is the only one with favorable results and for good reason.
Ron Paul is the only real viable candidate he is coming on strong.
Republicans love him and so do democrats he has what it takes to win.
