Hillary and Bush/GOP Counts

Posted: Tuesday, October 30, 2007 11:29 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
We knew Hillary Clinton would be a hot topic tonight, so we counted how many times each candidate used her name. With a total of 16 mentions of Hillary or Clinton, there were less mentions at this debate than at last week's Republican debate. Obama, who promised to step up his attacks, invoked the New York Senator's name seven times while Edwards used her name five times. Biden and Dodd each attacked her once while Richardson stood up for her once.

Clinton, for her turn, attacked the current administration, attacking Bush 11 times and Cheney twice. The other Democratic candidates also used Bush as a punching bag, invoking his name or administration a total of 16 times and Cheney's three times. Clinton also led the pack in criticizing the GOP, but Obama and Biden also joined in for that attack. Biden and Obama specifically attacked Rudy Giuliani, possibly turning him into the Republican front runner like the Republicans have done to Clinton.

I would like to comment on the poor questions, tabloid type journalism and poor attempts at humor. The candidates had to keep coming back to the issues after being asked arcane and ridiculous questions. I expected more of NBC but I guess those days are gone. The moderators did not understand the nature of a debate and underestimate the viewers. Shame on you.
You know I think a better comparison Obama should've made was that he was Rocky and Hillary was Ivan Drago. And after tonights debate, you can hear the words clearly....."HE'S CUT!!! HE'S CUT!! THE RUSSIAN IS CUT!!! Time to close in Obama. This waffling on the answers thing is gonna stick.
I saw today that over 54% of Southern children now live in poverty (up from just 39% in the late 80's.)  That's a pretty sobering statistic, especially given the amount of wealth that has accrued to the upper income tiers during that same period.  We need to elect a Democrat next year, and Hillary looks like our best bet.
I have to commend Hillary for her ability to muddle any differences between her and her opponents.

She's very very good at dodging answers while making you feel apeased at the same time.  Then later you think, "Wait- so where does she stand"?

It's sort of amazing.

If i hadn't already gone to every candidates' website to read their policy views, all Hillary's double talk might actually have me snowed.
While Edwards is right with his critizism about Clinton's vote on Iran..I am disappointed that there were not more comments about the Administrations' contempt and incompetence...Except for Denis and Edwards.
I expected so much more from Tim Russett and Brian Williams.  I can't believe they facilitated a charge againsn't Hillary and allowed Edwards and Obama to jab away on the sidelines.  That is not a debate.  I'm glad Richardson finally had to step in and bring some respectabiity.  A sad day in politics.  Where have you gone Tom Brokaw!

Jesse A.
it's Hillary's to lose, as a new yorker, her answer to illegal immigrant's in NY,was a start, they drive anyway, with no insurance and no liability.. we got to start some where, also all the guys except Biden are a lynch mob for hillary, typical men, get some backbone guys, have your own opinion, not just a reaction to Hillarys
Hillary, was brilliant, again and again. She's got my vote.

I do not understand why people thought her response on the driver's license issue was so confusing. It is not so confusing when you live in a state (Texas) where we have thousands of tourists from Mexico driving so freely without a driver's license and/or insurance. If you happen to be involved in an accident with them they do not have to pay you a cent.

In addition in the state of Texas you must have insurance to receive a driver's license so it win-win situation for everyone.

I concur with the same idea...."if you want to drive in Texas, you must have a driver's license."  Hence, a license also means insurability.

To those that oppose this idea because they fear this is just a key to illegal employment; a driver's license is not a license to work. It is only a license to drive.
Isolated instances don't concern me; patterns do. Hillary Clinton consistently dodged questions, refused to comit, obfuscated issues, and gave contradictory duplicitous answers to at least six questions. Someone on her campaign team should advise her to look serious and not smile when confronted with serious topics such as torture and war. Obama seemed more genuine and sincere, Edwards sharper and more skilled at debate, and Biden seems to have incredible judgement and twice the knowledge of most people in the room. Finally, this is getting interesting. bbb
Barbara Bascom, were we watching the same debate??

The only question that seemed confusing was the last question; on the driver's license and only because no details were given on this bill. You need to read on it.

And which six questions are you referring to?

You said Obama seemed genuine and sincere. Absolutely not. All he did throughout the debate was attack Hillary.

And Edwards was what...you said sharp? You might have been watching last election's debate with Bush.
All he has done this time around is whine and whine.....and dwells on the past.

I voted for him on the Primaries on the last election. I thought he was going to be my candidate again. However, he has been a big dissapointment to me and my family.

And Hillary she is the most brilliant, intelligent, wise, experienced candidate we have had in a very very long time. She has gained my vote and my trust because in the beginning of this race I had no plans to vote for her.

I believe strongly she is going to win this next election.
Question: Is it against the law to bare false wittiness??

The present Washington self serving paper Hangers would want you and I to bow to their agenda's. Is it not their agenda's which has brought failure to properly addressing removal of 12 million illegals.

This debate served nothing. No  leadership, a hand full of bickering finger pointing, and always ""your wrong!!

To elect one of these, would show America is being badgered into keeping this useless style of government!
While all the candidates are running against each other and the republican lineup, Hillary is running against Bush.  It is so tiring.  An easy way to dodge and duck.
bush is a joke and the country has long known the crimes and incompetence of Bush.  But, this is about 2008 and what are you going to do about it.
Hillary uses bush as cover to not answer.
It's like she feels she is running against Bush.  But, we all know the clintons are BFF with the bush's.  I suppose it is warm up in case she wins and can play victim and blame someone else for years for why she is failing.
Hoping we will never have to find out.
Darth Cheney only got five mentions, HHMMMM, he deserves the title of REALLY REAL ARCHIMEDES OF DOOM,
while he isn't the inventor of fear mongering, he has turned it into a fine science.
Biden attacked who?
Bush sucks, cheney sucks.. WE need to put them both in jail, now!
