Oh-eight (D): More on that Penn call

Posted: Thursday, November 01, 2007 9:07 AM by Domenico Montanaro

CLINTON: As expected Gerald McEntee's AFSCME, for the second time in 16 years, endorsed a Clinton candidacy in an open Dem nomination fight. The endorsement, by the way, is a reminder of just how few labor endorsements Barack Obama has received.

The Hill reports that the Clinton campaign held a conference call with key fundraisers yesterday. It was hosted by chief strategist Mark Penn and finance director Jonathan Mantz. They "told the supporters on the call, which The Hill listened to in its entirety, that they expect attacks from Clinton’s rivals to continue, and she will need the financial resources to deflect their attacks."

“‘I wouldn’t say she lost her cool,’ one caller said. ‘But I would say she lost her footing.” The caller added that Clinton’s response to questions about records from her time in the White House that have been sealed by the National Archives ‘made me roll my eyes.’”

Penn, “Mantz and several supporters hinted repeatedly on the call that Clinton was unfairly targeted by Tim Russert, debate moderator and host of NBC’s ‘Meet the Press.’ ‘Russert made it appear that President Clinton had done something new or unusual,’ Penn said, before adding that it ‘is, in fact, an extremely confusing situation…  I think there will be further clarification.’”

“‘I hope so,’ a female caller responded. ‘To me, it was the most uncomfortable part of the debate.’”

“Penn turned again to Russert. ‘The other candidates were asked questions like, “Is there life in outer space?”’”

Two conservative bloggers filed an FEC complaint against the Clinton campaign over the fundraising it did in Chinatown, which some media reports indicated led to some illegal fundraising.

This is likely to go nowhere. Then again, you never know when one of these complaints opens up a can of worms. Still, this is the FEC. Look for some resolution of this complaint sometime into Chelsea Clinton's second term as president or George P. Bush's first term. We kid, of course.

EDWARDS: John Edwards "is planning to kick off a new advertising campaign in Iowa today, with a 60-second spot that his strategists hope will boost his newly improved profile. Edwards challenged Clinton most forcefully on what he called ‘double talk’ in her rhetoric, after weeks on the campaign trail questioning her integrity."

It’s being couched -- sort of -- as his first ad. In actuality, it's not his first, but more of a re-launch and the first one since Joe Trippi took over the media strategy. Apparently that qualifies as news. "It is time for our party, the Democratic Party, to show a little backbone, to have a little guts, to stand up for working men and women," the former North Carolina senator says. "If we are not their voice, they will never have a voice."

Edwards went trick-or-treating in New Hampshire. He wasn’t wearing a costume, unless a zip-up fleece and jeans counts.

OBAMA: Obama went after Clinton in his stump speech yesterday. “After the most secretive administration in memory, an administration that consistently misled the American people,” he said, “we need a president who is going to be open and forthright. I think last night's debate really exposed this fault line. Senator Clinton left us wondering where she stood on every single hard question from Iran to Social Security to drivers' licenses for undocumented workers.”

Time's Joe Klein thinks the media judgment of Obama hasn't been fair. "Clinton's character, her tendency to lawyer questions rather than answer them, is now front and center in this campaign, and that is appropriate. But I'm still stuck on the frenzy to judge Obama's worth by his willingness to attack Clinton. I spent part of the day of the debate watching a parade of talking heads expatiate endlessly on how dire was the need for Obama to go macho. It was ‘journalism’ at its most useless."

More: "Obama's low-key campaign has been confusing to the press, and perhaps to the public, from the start. A few days before the debate, I spent a day with Obama in Iowa, and the most striking thing to me about the Senator's performances was the scrupulous honesty of his answers, his insistence on delivering bad news when necessary."

For those who've read Joe Klein's "Politics Lost" will realize that it appears Klein has found himself a candidate.

Why does this have to be Klein is on Obama's side?  Is it possible that despite the media's blood thirst, Obama is trying to stay above board and question Clinton on matters of substance?  Could it be possible that Obama is not comfortable attacking people, and maybe that's a good thing? The nice thing about Klein is he dares to say something different.  What a concept!

The current rash of Clinton stories are a perfect example of the media's mob mentality.  They do not question HRC's absence of detail for months on end.  However, it is the focus of one debate, where the moderators (for once) do not allow canned answers to stand and now it is headlines across the country.   I thought the press was supposed to speak for the public and overturn stones, today's national press is so myopic that they are unable to think outside what everyone else is saying.

Nice work Joe Klein!  Way to be a journalist!
This is insulting to democratic women like myself.
Hillary plays the victim again.  She has had an easy ride and has been portrayed by the press as not just inevitable but, treated as a queen.
She has not faced anything tough.  Not being pressed on her failure to answer questions to troubling things about her candidacy.  She has daily All about Hillary love fest by the media news programs.
She has had a totally free pass and has been treated with kid gloves since she announced.  One brave journalist who dared to break with the beltway Queen's court, said Hillary has not had one bad hair day all year.
She has one night where she is challenged on her failure to answer questions, serious issues are raised about her and her qualifications and suddenly it's sexism and victim time.
What the heck is she going to do when the republicans really attack her?  cry?
What about on the world stage when a leader gets tough with her?  cry victim?  not very presidential.
How about all the tough treatment Obama has gotten and what about all the slime Hillary feeds the press on him?  does he cry racism?  No.  Because he doesn't play games and is a legit candidate due to his own hard work.  Hillary owes her career to her husband and not because of accomplishment.  Of which, has the press compared his senate record and legislation with hers?  Aside from flag burning, what legislation has she even done?
Like bush, Hillary is a serious candidate who has been getting favored treatment because of a family name and  this country cannot afford another president because of name and not accomplishment.
Some blue state polls were out yesterday, allowing us to verify everything is as usual in California, Massachusetts (where everything is as usual) and Maryland (where it is too close for comfort). Full numbers: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/11/reviewing-blueness-of-some-blue-states.html
As Mike Gravel said American people are becoming fatter and dumber. If you guys can't be so easily fooled by corrupt politicians like Clinton and Media conspiracy, then Obama did not need to spend time to differential himself because you could do it on your own. But since American people are sleep walking and their functioning brains are immersed in sand but the implication of that is disaster for the future of the country and the world, he has no option but spend some time to educate fools. Voting is a serious issue. Outcome of your vote have impact so many things around the world. So take the emotion out, think clearly through about the implication of your vote before going to polling booth. If you can't figure it out, don't go there based on what crap Clintons or the media made you believe. Sorry for the strong words. But people get the government they deserve. You deserved Bush, you got the mess. If you deserve Clinton, better get ready for bigger disasters
When journalists support another candidate it is way to be a journalist.  When they say something favorable to Hillary, it is all about how they have sold out.

Love the hypocrisy.  Look forward to my next dose.
I think some focus is lacking over the assertion that rising tensions with Iran (like declaring the guard as a terrorist organization) is causing the UNNECESSARY rise in oil prices $30-$40 the actual value. This hits home to every American and is one very reasonable point made by Joe Biden as to why he voted against it.

The corporate media at the national level is focusing on  Clinton, good or bad, because she is an insider and they want her as "the other option".  She's good for big business.  Is she good for the country as a whole?  I think not.

Media used to be about the people.  Getting the story, digging up dirt.  Now the media is full of capitalists trying to get rich and famous, self promoting egomaniacs who have way too much leverage over taxpayer's perceptions of politics and power, they do their own commercials, plug their own websites...the "liberal" media used to be heavily democratic because there was no money in the field...But will we ever hear this perception from capitalistic fat heads with their own tv/radio shows???  NEVER  keeping the electorate divided between two parties keeps the rich wealthy...shhh secrets out
Scott in PA--give me some of whatever you're smoking. The Revolutionary Guard IS a terrorist organization
Bruce, NV. You've completely missed the point. If you pay for any gas or oil you can thank the hapless way the White House goes about dealing with Foreign issues. This vote and the leaqd-up to it is a HUGE factor in the increase risk jump that the oil has taken recently.
As Biden pointed out, if Bush wanted to push more sanctions on Iran (or push other diplomatic efforts), he really did not need this bill to it. HRC and many others just fed right into the problem, and it is costing all of us today. Like he said "Big countris don't bluff" These types of policies the Repubs and the HRC machine is hurting every common American. This has to be a bigger news story.
Bruce: Indeed. Inside of the IRG is its elite paramilitary group ''The Seekers of Martyrdom''[or ''martyr seekers''],who are set up along the lines of the IJA/Ns KAMAKAZE. Biden fails to observe how we are in an oil embargo with Iran, but not with oilrich Kurdistan, which has been the target of tensions thanks to Bidens parties dumbly plotted Armenian genocide bill, which Byrd[D-WVA],only made a worse hash of by now angering the Greeks and which oil analyists cite as a source of higher oil prices.

she will need the financial resources to deflect their attacks."

I suggest Bill go back and start working for INFOUSA and make sure the lists of Alzheimers patients gets out so Hillary can get her share of the funds....

Somebody likes Hillary.

I pity you.  You are going to be so disappointed.
I hear The Hill also reported someone on the call saying "I'd like to shoot Tim Russert".

THAT ddin't get much attention.
