First thoughts: Focusing on the GOPers

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
RICHMOND, VA -- With the intense focus on the Democratic presidential contest -- the latest chapter is Obama’s New York Times interview on Iran -- it's safe to say that not as much attention so far has been devoted to the GOP race. That's why a focus group here last night of 12 Republican voters, conducted by pollster Peter Hart (D), was so illuminating. For the most part, these voters -- seven men, five women, all of the white, all of them Bush voters in 2004 -- are disappointed with the president, fairly undecided about the GOP field, and pessimistic about the nation's direction. How pessimistic? Not a single one thought that the next generation would be better off, which is a striking attitude.

*** Still undecided: Turning to the GOP horserace, four of the 12 said they would vote (or

were leaning to vote) for Giuliani, another three picked Thompson, two chose Romney, two went with McCain, and one said both Thompson and Huckabee. Interestingly, just one of the 12 -- a Giuliani voter -- said he was solid with his pick. Not surprisingly, the Rudy supporters cited his leadership and 9/11; the Thompson people pointed to his personality; the Romney supporters talked about his experience and presidential looks; and the McCain folks mentioned his experience and heroism. On the flip side, five of the 12 said they had reservations about Romney's Mormon faith, although two of them said that they could change their mind if Romney tried to persuade them. (On that subject, per the Politico’s Mike Allen, Huckabee
won’t call Mormonism Christianity in a CBS interview.) A couple cited problems with Rudy's personal life and multiple marriages -- although some of the more socially conservative group members said it wasn't fair to judge him -- but more were troubled by his position on social issues. Asked to choose between Romney and Rudy, Giuliani won, 7-5, (but much of the support wasn't solid).

*** But ready for the general? While these Republicans were divided on the GOP candidates, they weren't divided on the Democrats. None of them said they'd vote for any of the Democratic front-runners. "Anybody but Hillary," said one. Even those who expressed concerns about Romney's Mormon faith said they'd have no problem voting for him in the general election. "Being a Democrat is worse than being a Mormon," said another. For Democrats, this suggests that their eventual nominee would face stiff opposition, no matter the perceived flaws with the GOP nominee. That said, despite the focus group's low opinion of Hillary Clinton, none of them doubted that she was strong or competent. That was a revealing finding to Hart, who said it was akin to Democrats in 1964 admitting that Barry Goldwater had a meaningful national defense policy.

*** Gender card backfiring? Speaking of Hillary, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell on TODAY looked at Clinton playing the gender card after her less-than-impressive debate performance on Tuesday. Indeed, there’s lots of chatter today about whether the Clinton campaign is hurting itself in a general election with this talk of the men in the race ganging up on the lone woman. Asked on TODAY if Hillary was being ganged up on, Obama harked back to the tough questions and criticism he received (over Pakistan and world leaders) at the ABC debate in August, and remarked that he didn’t complain that he was receiving tough questions “because I look different than the other folks on the stage.”

Why did Obama change the subject? Today’s front-page headline in the New York Times: “Obama Envisions New Relationship With Iran.” With all the attention on Hillary --

much of it not that positive -- why did Obama seek out the Times and change the subject to Iran? Whatever the reason, the Obama campaign seems proud of the article, given that it emailed reporters a copy of the article, as well as an AP piece about a Senate resolution Obama introduced last night saying that Bush “does not have authority to use military force against Iran.” Of course, Obama's folks know that they can't debate process forever, and with Iraq no longer a divisive foreign policy issue, he needs a new issue. Iran it is…

*** On the trail: Biden and Obama speak at the Greenville NAACP banquet in South Carolina. Elsewhere today, Clinton files to be on the New Hampshire ballot; Edwards campaigns with actor Danny Glover in South Carolina; Giuliani picks up an endorsement in DC and then heads to New Hampshire; Huckabee speaks at the South Carolina Renewal Project Pastors' Policy Briefing; McCain also campaigns in South Carolina and speaks at an event honoring a Marine who died in Iraq; Richardson stumps in Iowa; and Romney raises money in Cleveland and Connecticut. Also, Michelle Obama campaigns in Iowa.

All the bashing of Hillary IS having an effect and she will reap the benefits. Ha! Thats what they get for being bullies(Matthews and Russert), who are both republicans by the way.
Wasnt there a debate between Hillary and Rudy in NY with Russert moderating and didn't he do the same thing with attacking Hillary? It backfired then because Hillary won that election. Does someone remember this?
Remember, the harder they go after the Clintons, the stronger and more powerful they become.Lets end the Bush/Clinton dynasty thing AFTER Hillary gets 8 more years. Then we will be even steven.
I just saw C. todd on MSNBC and he said something about Obama talking with Iran's crazy president.  I wonder if anyone realizes how alike with iran we are.  We both have people who don't want war, want diplomacy and countries talking.  both have a crazy president hell bent on bombing other countries.  Maybe both presidents are acting the way they are because they are so much alike??
obama is thinking in the right direction.  Enough with this war and blood and death.
and enough with Hillary playing victim.  It worked in 2000 because she was fresh off the Monica thing and the sympathy was riding high so, when Lazio went after her it played badly.  But, it is 7 years later and she keeps using that card.  Chicken little syndrome?
hmmmm, why isn't the media focusing on Obama whinning about Edward's getting the Union endorsment from the New Hampshire Unions?

From what the Obama says, he himself would have gotten the endorsement if only one more member had shown up to vote.
Since Obama doesn't show up to vote, why should his supporters?
1st. thoughts... can we survive 445 more days until a Democrat takes office? I sure as hell hope so.
MATTHEWS AND RUSSERT SHOULD BE FIRED ! THIS IS NOT FAIR JOURNALISM. WHY WERE SO MANY QUESTIONS GIVEN TO HILLARY AND WHY WAS SHE HASSLED AND THE OTHER CANDIDATES WERE NOT ? IT SOUNDS LIKE A REPUBLICAN PLOY. THIS HAS BACK FIRED ON BOTH THE OTHER CANDIDATES AND MSNBC/NBC.
'That's why a focus group here last night of 12 Republican voters, conducted by pollster Peter Hart (D), was so illuminating.'

it is utterly ridiculous to base anything on a focus group of '12' people, why even bother printing this garbage? I will tell you why. so you could lead into the following statement,

despite the focus group's low opinion of Hillary Clinton, none of them doubted that she was strong or competent. That was a revealing finding to Hart, who said it was akin to Democrats in 1964 admitting that Barry Goldwater had a meaningful national defense policy.

first reads bias for the hillary is beyond reprehensible, why don't you guy's save a few keystrokes and just post that 'hillary has won the nomination' everyday.

hillary can not possibly win the general election, although her controversial character makes for entertaining copy she is not who the dems need to win in 08
As a registered Independent for more than 40 years, my response to ALL of the candidates is "none of the above"!

Tuck, realityville, KS: '...hmmmm, why isn't the media focusing on Obama whinning about Edward's getting the Union endorsment from the New Hampshire Unions?...'

Sorry  Tuck, Hillary fell apart under scrutiny !!
She's trying to conceal her positions !!
IS that  a strategy ?
Hillary had two different opinions about IDs for illegal immigrant in two minutes !!
That got some notice !!

her papers from the Clinton years !!
What is she HIDING ?
What is she covering up ?
So much for her 'experience'

The dark cloud is lifting .....

Clinton/Romney '08
Don't like our position ?
We'll change it !!

Clinton/Romney '08
WE support ALL SIDES of the ISSUE !!
I watched the debate and for me it was hard to watch. Being a woman having worked in corporate america, I can see why Hillary would pull the gender card.  You had 6 candidates and 2 moderators, all male, hammering Hillary.  The other candidates never gave straight answers.  They all just said what Hillary is doing wrong.  I'm very disappoint in Russert and Williams.  They spent the first 22 minutes creating the bashing session.  This wasn't a debate.  This was MSNBC and the gang getting the candidates to slime the front runner.  Whatever happened made Chris Matthew happy.  He even went so far as to telling Obama what he should say about Hillary on his show before the debate.  I had a problem about that also.  If Obama doesn't know what to say about Hillary on his own, he should not be in the race.  I don't know who will win or who I will vote for.  What I do know is that the media can make or break a candidate.  This has made me take another look at Hillary.  She may be the one for me.
New Winthrop/ETV Poll Finds Thompson, Giuliani and Romney in Dead Heat
As Clinton WIDENS LEAD Over Obama From Previous Horserace Poll
One-Third Registered SC Repubs/Dems Remain Undecided

"The strong organization that Hillary Clinton has in South Carolina is reaping dividends. She is the candidate a lot of establishment Democrats feel can win back the presidency. While she doesn't run as well in some constituencies as others, she is clearly the overall front-runner. In order to win over South Carolina voters, Barack Obama needs to highlight Clinton as a polarizing figure. He needs to convince South Carolinians that the only way Democrats will lose the race in 2008 is if they nominate her. The message for Obama now is that you have to go directly at the person in the lead. It is not just about President Bush or Iraq anymore. It has to be about why Obama is better than Clinton."

The GOP focus group seems pragmatic enough to realize that so many bridges have been burned the last few years, the outlook for the future bodes ill for those who will inherit it.
hey lookie here folks... hillaryclinton.com
Edwards and Obama reminded a lot of women of their bullying bosses, husbands, brothers, etc.  This will not help their campaigns and may very well help Hillary. Not that she needs much help – could her lead get any bigger?  And could Edwards and Obama get any smaller?
oh here we go again with Jerry pretending to be Sierra. MK, shes going to prove you wrong, you know.
there's that "anybody but Hillary" comment again.  I hear that quite a bit in my small town. If you ask why, the answer is usually " It's just a feeling I have" without a definite reason. An intangible something , hard to define, but present none the less.
The republicans are scared out of their minds. So afraid of Hillary. Even these repub reporters. They will be whining on election night when She is projected the winner very early in the evening.
sierra,so you're jerry?

wow, now that's desperate.

Obama...you know what his new tag line is?

The poll VAN quotes is a PRE-DEBATE poll.  I haven't seen your post-debate numbers.  that will not be funny for you.

Columbia SC...The results of the latest Winthrop/ETV Poll, conducted between Oct. 7 and Oct. 28, 2007, are in--just a few months before South Carolinians will be going to the primaries to decide the presidential nominees.

If the sharper attacks on Clinton succeed in tightening the race (and the reason why candidates go negative is because it WORKS.) WHO will be the major beneficiary?
Would it be Edwards or Obama, and why?
What could the possible downside or potential backlash be, if any?
Do you think Clinton will go negative too? At what point would you consider going negative if you were Clinton?
What if nothing changes in the polls? What would you do if you were Edwards or Obama and the polls are the same two weeks from now?

Van
Hillary new tag line: she pees in her pantsuit.  If she can't stand the pressure of a debate, what is she going to do with Middle Eastern Leaders and Putin.  Cry to Bill.  Margret Thatcher had to withstand weekly hazing by Parliment.  If Hillary doesn't have a backbone then she needs to sit down. Advice from one woman to another.
SHE'S IN IT TO WIN IT AND WIN IT SHE WILL ! HILLARY CLINTON THE FIRST WOMEN PRESIDENT IN THE UNITED STATES AND ONE OF THE BEST LEADERS THIS NATION HAS EVER HAD. hillaryclinton.com
All you Hillary AKs
Remember your voting for Hillary not Bill.  What has she done in the Senate, nothing. But before Van starts touting off stuff, she got aid for NY after 9/11, big deal, a dead person could have done that.  She got a gas line stopped between CT & NY, every other politician was against so she didn't stick her neck out there.  In NY Sen Schumer works for the state & Hillary rides his coattails just like she does her husbands.

Frankie in Chicago, Hilary did not beat Rudy he withdrew because he had prostate cancer.  The nominee by the Republican party and unknown except on Long Island Rick Lazio lost 57-48 with only 7 weeks of campaigning.

Hill Aks stop whining over the boys are picking on her, she better have balls like the rest of them if we are unfortunate to have her as president becuase the leaders of the world won't treat her differently, if anything they will turn the heat up.
Clinton still ahead in SC according to the state newspaper outside my office today.  If she can run over Obama here, it's no contest anywhere else.  Edwards continues to lose ground.
to msnbc!

It figures you wouldnt show my response; no need to ask which side you are on; my opinion of this site need not be said!
Those who continue to play the "The moderators and Obama and Edwards were picking on her" card are, well, sad. If I were to step behind the veil of ignorance for only a moment, I would say to myself, "Self, can she not handle herself when people question her? I thought she was strong. Obviously, I was wrong."

Of course, those who so blindly support her will never see any flaw. They are so convoluted that they actually think any mis-steps will help her. Not that the other camps are immune from this.
Freeman Female... Is that you again Jerry? From Texas? Can't you be more original?
NBC/MSNBC = "UNFAIR" JOURNALISM..PERIOD !
The 'anybody but Hillary' tag seems to come mainly, from the GOP, though it obviously is a way of saying 'anybody but a Democrat', and being catty about it. It seems to show that they don't care which Republican is picked. The few Democrats who say it, seem to have someone else in mind. Just an Independent's Observation.
The more the repubs pushed and criticized Bill the stronger he became. Does anyone remember? Looks as if the little lady Hillary is very much the same way. Personally, I highly respect folks that can do this.
Obama is picking up on the momentum of his debate win over Clinton by having this story come to the forefront now, so the timing is sound strategically.

"No regime change in Iran" are the words that voters want to hear, and Obama is the first frontrunner in either party to nail it; the fact that it adds to his being the only one to oppose the Iraq war from the beginning gives him an added credibility in an America where 70% of the public opposes starting Middle East wars.  It's both a primary winner and a general election winner.
Very telling that these Republicans were in agreement that things are not going to be better for the next generation.  Rank and file Republicans are lost, knowing things aren't going well but reflexively looking to their own party as the only possible source of a solution that the leadership doesn't have.  Even my Dad, a life long Republican says frequently that the current tilt toward the wealthy is destroying the middle class.

The results are starting to come in...

Tuesday night’s debate was not Hillary Clinton’s finest moment of the campaign season, but there has been little or no immediate damage to her standing in the national polls. In fact, if anything, support for Clinton has ticked up a bit since she stumbled on an answer to questions about drivers licenses for illegal aliens.
Data from the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll shows that on the two nights following the debate (Wednesday and Thursday) Clinton held a 45% to 18% lead over Barack Obama. For Clinton, that’s an improvement from Monday and Tuesday nights when her lead over Obama had been 40% to 24%."

JANIS TESTER, GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA (Sent Friday, November 02, 2007 10:18 AM)

Janis,

First of all, everyone is "in it to win it". Second, Clinton is only one womAn. And thirdly - and most importantly - she is nowhere close to one of the best leaders this country ever had. Even the most die-hard supporter would have to fool themselves into thinking that. Let me list just a few of our leaders who are infinitely more important that Hillary Clinton will EVER be.

Thomas Jefferson
James Madison
Abraham Lincoln
George Washington
Benjamin Franklin
Herbert Hoover (ok, maybe not him)
Martin Luther King, Jr.
John Marshall

The list could go on.

CITIZENJ YOUR FULL OF C--P !
BB--not that it matters..but neither Russert nor Williams are republicans. You need to do some research. Williams worked in the Carter administration!!! First Read is right!! There's no whining in presidential politics!!
Rick Lazio lost 57-48

This guy could work as an accountant for, "The Producers". It's probably the MOST accurate part of their argument...

And there is some Senate news today: A new poll of North Carolina has Dole running ahead of Hagan, but still under 50%.
And there is new information about Udall's flirting with a Senate run, and what it means for Denish and Richardson.
Roundup of both: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/11/more-senate-news-dole-on-verge-of.html
Hey BB (don't be so small-minded),

I have posted here QUITE a WHILE in the past few weeks and I am always PRO-DEMOCRATIC.

I am trying to show that there are people in Texas(originally from Alabama) who can look at the ISSUES first, Make DETAILED analysis, AND make INFORMED choices.
shadow, do you read anything other than obama forums?
Edwards won the debate, Clinton held her ground, and Obama came across as weak...

Do you get it? No one thinks obama won.

Edwards did great though

sonya, are you jerry too?
geez, I wish this site had people register...
You are right Hillary was hammered againa and again during the debate. In the end she was still standing. She didnt attack the other candidates, she discussed her ideas. When all is said and done all those males did was prove Hillary is tough enough to be the president.

There is a part i wanted to address. Since when did we need republicans to vote for dems?  As long as we can get the majority of Dems and thr Majority of Inds. we dont need a majority of republicans.
Unfortunately Obama is a snoozer. Hillary has bigger balls, no question about that.
vanreuter, NY NY: '...If the sharper attacks on Clinton succeed in tightening the race (and the reason why candidates go negative is because it WORKS.)...'

The blood in in the water ......
Hillary is dishonest and evasive.
She's as 'slick' as Bill or Geroge

'...WHO will be the major beneficiary?...'

It looks like Edwards !!
Meet you next President, van !
Edwards can't afford to get out too far in his attacks (see Gephadrdt + Dean).
Obama looked too meek to really attack.
But, if all the contenders highlight the evasiveness and dishnesty, Clinton is toast.
Edwards convinced me because he was more assertive.

The whole point of claiming White House 'experience' and then covering up her records was a BIG MISTAKE
Don't even you thing she was evasive when asked if she would release the papers ?
What is she hiding ?

You picked a loser, van !
I thought the Clinton's where cunning campaigners....
WHAT A LAUGH !!
Her strategy is to NOT REAVEAL HER POSITIONS ?
(to preserve her 'flexibility' ?)
Sorry, that plays right into 'Slick Willie' and 'the meaning of is' and 'I did not have sex with that woman'
Who is going to buy a 'pig in a poke' ?
Most Democrats want an anti-war candidate.
Hillary seems to be pro-war

If the Democrats continue the questioning, Hillary is toast.
If they don't, Hillary will lose in the General Election.
Republicans aren't going to be 'nice to girls'

It's not over 'til it's over......
How much do you want it, John Edwards ?
The dems have basically chosen Billary.  Any Dem who questions her on an actual issue is called a bully.  Even a former D speech writer (Mathews) is being called a republican here.

Looks like the Clinton machine is working it's magic.  Unless you work for the Clinton's, or suffer from a lack of intelligence that the Clinton's bank on (bb..which category are you?) you are all part of the Right Wing Conspiracy.
who are infinitely more important that Hillary Clinton will EVER be.
CitizenJ (Sent Friday, November 02, 2007 10:36 AM)

Will EVER be? Even you can't predict the future, and EVERY individual (MALE) had their own flaws and wasn't UNIVERSALLY acknowledged to be great in their own lifetimes.
I don't know how history will see a Hillary Clinton Presidency, if there is one, and with all due respect, neither do you.
Actually, I'm surprised you posted this.

Van

CitizenJ, no, the question you have to ask yourself is; self-why do I hate this particular female so much? Or;self, do I hate all females? Or self, why would I list a group of males to show how they are BETTER than females. Ahh.. self, maybe I'm scared of females ah, self maybe I'm just one of those insecure men who can never even fathom a FEMALE in charge. Self....why don't I have a woman in my life?
Is it not ""SAD" The Clinton's are bashed because they both are Washington self serving Paper hangers! Hillary is all talk, no leadership traits, always flipping and flopping to the beat of another drum, using the Gender card,

Notice Bill is moving more back into the public eye! Well that's not going to cut it ""getting"" his Professional ""LIAR" wife into the White House!! These two have so much conjecture and misleading hidden Agenda's """We want ""A"" president not a ""HAS BEEN"" and a ""WANT TO BE""!

The Clinton's are not change, They are self serving Washington Paper Hanger's with their agenda ""Not America's agenda. Will you vote for ""ONE"" who every time it opens it's mouth, The letter ""I"" starts a statement  """I""" is """""ONE""""" and where in the American equation does """ONE"""" rule this nation!!!

Bashing: More like truth and fact!
Sierra is Jerry. He is not an Edwards supporter. It is Jerry. bb is right. Phoney Jerry!I don't think Freeman is Jerry though.
