GOP focus group plays the word game

From NBC's Mark Murray
RICHMOND, VA -- We wrote about this earlier, but it bears another mention: Thompson seems to have a lot more upside as a candidate than many in the Chattering Class believe, at least according to the GOP focus group we attended here last night.

As another example, here were some of the focus group's word associations with Thompson: "grandfather," "father," "conservative," "soft spoken," "good," and "confident."

By comparison, here were words for Giuliani: "good," "cocky," "cold," "confident," and "liberal."

Romney: "leader," "principled," "good," "smart," and "articulate."

Huckabee: "don't know," "funny name," "Christian," "conservative," "good man," and "fair tax."

McCain: "Vietnam," "strong," and "confident."

No one had views on Tancredo and Hunter, and Paul drew just one response: "too weak on national security."

Here were the GOP focus group's word associations with Hillary Clinton: "dastardly," "too liberal," deceitful," and "socialistic."

And Obama: "too liberal," "hip," "inexperienced," "young," "fake," "unproven," and "soft."

I don't expect anything more from Republican. They are bunch of goof balls.

I don't even know where they stand on issues. Please give me a break when it comes to Republican.

As far as i am concern. Republican is equivalent to disaster when it comes to foreign policy. The only thing that will make me vote for them is Hillary Clinton.
How about "Lead Free" did that come up?  Didn't think so.  What with Bush's Consumer Product Safety team of Texas F.Ups, all the lead they are letting into children's systems just adds future voters to the GOP ranks.  News Flash: IQ's drop everywhere!  Liars, cheats, panderer's, pedophiles join the GOP today....you can fool the fools!
Is it just me or is this pointless?

It might have been interesting to calibrate this focus group by throwing out the name Hitler.
Any one of those and $5.00 will get you a cup of frappe latte crappuchino. Are they blessings, curses, or wishful thinking?
I can't take this focus group too seriously when "flip-flop" and "mormon" is not associated with Mitt Romney.
Nuanced - I agree.  What is the starting point of this group?

Although they got one thing write - Rudy is cocky.
Nuanced - I agree.  What is the starting point of this group?

Although they got one thing right - Rudy is cocky.

(I just had to correct that typo!)
Who pays attention to repukes?
Romney: "principled," ???

He is the biggest flip flopper on earth. Give me a break!
MY ignorance is showing.  What exactly does a focus group do?
Why play word games?  I simply have a real hard time getting past the candidates’ individual make-up to consider any value for whether they are Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, Christian Right or not, hawk or dove and so on.  I don’t see how it matters whether they are male or female, African American, Hispanic, of European ancestry or whatever, even whether religious or not.  But I do especially care a whole lot if they are honest or not, are ethical or not, are sincere or not, seem to have real compassion with trustworthy values and I’ve learned, with a whole lot of current reinforcement, to look for enough genuine humility to temper their strong, self-focused egos.  To me it seems obvious that whatever they say, like if ever asking someone if they are honest, just doesn’t mean much and simply isn’t a real indication of what they will do.  Those values, while leaning towards being idealistic, have thankfully kept me from voting for Johnson, for Nixon and for George W. Bush (2000 & 2004).

To my way of thinking, the Republican Party today has put itself in a position where, all candidates included, their credibility is highly questionable and trusting them is near impossible.  With their unwavering demonstration of total, continuing, belligerent and complete support for the Bush administration (while disregarding the gross dishonesty and the irresponsible concentration on a self-serving private agenda) they have simply declared, no matter what they say, that they really look to continue with ‘more of the same’.  Take John McCain, who I think has more of the values mentioned above than any other Republican candidate, and recognize how in 2004 even he abandoned his principals and constituents to put his total support behind Bush.  How can anyone put any faith in any of them?

Then there is Hillary and she simply doesn’t pass the test either.  She gets a lot of meaningless criticism and then receives considerable support for a lot of things but never for the values mentioned above.  She, like George W., demonstrates a strong, self-indulgent sociopathic personality that drives her to say/do whatever she thinks will get her what she wants, without ever having a conscience or anything more than self-concern.  Her history, her complete self-focus and bold, combative, ‘I’m right, you’re wrong’ attitude says she also can be bought and controlled when her self-interests and ego are being satisfied.  It seems that to trust her would be like ‘rolling the dice’.

Hopefully somewhere in the remainder there is some quality, some ‘cream that will come to the top’, that can give the people a real choice and some hope.  God knows we need it!
AHHHHHH, now I get it, the nativists are alive and well in the woodwork of our house.
The father, grandfather, big cheif, shaman and man of visions against the dark side of yin and yang. The evil temptress, lilith, the power of the moon and the death of the year king on the winter fields. White horse jumps over the grave, ridden by a virgin boy to find the vampyre. Hide your children and stay away from crossroads and wells at night.
The witch trials will start and I will see weeping young women rend their clothing and screaming of posession by the demon BILLY as the young countess baths in the blood of the newborn babes of the village.
Fiction cannot get more real in politics, I don't read much fiction during the political season, doesn't compare with the real thing.

For those of you who haven't seen this, a new South Carolina primary poll has a complete tie in the GOP primary, while Clinton is ahead among Democrats: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2007/11/morning-polls-is-pennsylvania-no-longer.html
Dot -- the focus group last night was asked about two hours worth of questions about politics. They were 12 Republican voters, and it allowed the journalists watching and pollsters conducting the focus group to hear their views on a wide variety of questions. First Read watched a Democratic focus group back in May. Thanks for the question.
Ron Paul is seeking the Republican nomination, but the neocons hate him, and refuse to acknowledge his growing popularity among voters on both sides.  He is way too liberal for their war-mongering empire building egos.  Before dismissing him outright because he is seeking the Republican nomination, take a look at RonPaul.org.  I think most people will find something to like in this candidate.  He hasn't garnered over $10 million from small time donations for nothing, there is a growing diverse grassroots effort here.
Go for it Bee, vote republican. Thats a very intelligent plan for a democrat.Guiliani would be a perfect fit for you.
The word I associate with current repubs is "UN-AMERICAN" and ANTI-FREEDOM.
Dot my ignorance is showing too. I haven't a clue! Must be an important group though.
why are the diplomats in the state house whining about going to Iraq?Oh sob I don't want to get killed, who will raise my children. Then quit you cowardly bas----s.You have not opened your mouths while your boss was sending our children off to die---not only once but twice and three times. And extending their time there too.
Interesting they associated Obama with fake, considering most Republicans, including those who do and do not support him, still find him to be honest.

This must be an especially dumb batch of Republicans.
This was actually better for Mitt rather than Thompson.

Thanks for the info.

Its nice to know the Republican party is interested in upholding its reputation for harboring the lowest common denominator in terms of reasoning skills. I'm just not sure if these "testtakers" are mentally retarded or emotionally stunted.

(all apologies to the retarded)
Ron Paul 2008!
REG:  Extremely well said!  Check out both Obama and Edwards more and make your pick...I have seen/heard Edwards (couldn't afford Obama's expensive fund raiser) and really liked him..seems pretty genuine to me .My voting record checks with yours for the same reasons...
Giuliani:   Bush on Steroids
McCain:     Bush Lite
Romney:     Dudley Do Right
Huckabee:   Funny name; funny guy
Paul:       A conservtive in libertarian clothing

Just want to make mention that Clinton took the heat from six opponents in Tuesday's primary.  She also was hit by both moderators.  I thought that moderators were not supposed to be playing gotcha, but they do with Clinton.  It's not right and not fair.  But, she came through it and is still standing.  She is the only one strong enough in either field to be president.
Be careful, Joy.  By saying that, you are going to be called out for being feminist or whining, or both...you are simply not allowed to take that impression away from the debate.
I think this is another example of hand picked, dependent thinkers who respond instead of using their minds. Paul is "weak" on national security? Hardly. Ron Paul is the only one talking seriously about national security issues such as withdrawing from uneccessary regions where our presence is occupation to maintain an empire as opposed to "protecting" us, and he with Tancredo are the only ones talking seriously about controlling our boarders. Thats the way you would defend from a terrorist attack not by galavanting around the world playing into the hands of those who seek to do us harm by validating their reasons for "war on America." What exactly is being defended in the name of national security in Iraq or anywhere in the middle east? What happened to the days when "liberal" and "conservative" where dependent on either a loose or strict interpretation of the Constitution, which mandates "defense?" We cant nor would we be able to defend this country in the event something did happen with troops all over the world fighting an "enemy" that has been mostly artificially created using demagogery in an attempt to expand American influence and further turn what is suppose to be a Constitutional Republic into an authoritarian police state (and this extends far beyond the middle east). Im sorry, but there is a revolution coming and I believe Ron Paul is our only chance of having it pass peacfully. Thank you for your time.
Joy - there are plenty of posts to make your "mention."  Seriously, does her camp have people planted on this thing?

Sounds like a typical George Bush news conference with the press.  Poor, poor, Hillary will need to get used to such things if by chance, and it's a longshot at best, she wins the Presidency.  If she can't handle it, maybe she should go bake cookies.
Giuliani:   Bush on Steroids
McCain:     Bush Lite
Romney:     Dudley Do Right
Huckabee:   Funny name; funny guy
Paul:       A conservtive in libertarian clothing

Hillary: Hick from the sticks
Biden: Did you really write that speech Joe?
Dodd: Dazed and confused
Edwards: Gay by the Bay
Obama: I'm new here, how does this work?
Kucinich: I am standing up!
mikeeg: ''Un American''is handing out voter-registrations to eight of the nineteen  9/11 hijackers.[which idiots like Spitzer ,governor of New York of all places, wants to continue without regard to citizenship or social-security identification which even Jimmy Carter, and James Baker of the ISG,oppose]. Of course, this is why we get to see Hillary squirm at the moment.

The same could be asked of the other camps.  Or did you fail to notice how many anti-Hillary postings there are as well?  But I guess they are all independent thinkers whereas anyone who would say word one in support of Hillary must be a paid operative.

Unreal.
shadow - "dumb batch of republicans"...aren't you being redundant?
You left out one word i use to characterize the Bush admininstration  Liars.
REG, Your post was one of the most well-reasoned I have read on any talkback. Most people are so ridiculously slavish to their parents' party that they no longer bother to think for themselves. I unregistered as a Democrat this year and am sincerely hoping a good 3rd party candidate comes forward to score the votes of all the people smart enough to realize that both sides have lost their way.
I guess i consider myself a democrat but I must agree with some of the post in regards to Ron Paul.  I watched the last republican debate and he was the only one up there who didn't seem to be pandering to a base whose values and ideas have been, and please forgive me i'm not speaking about all republican voters, shaped by the current administration. Because the Bush administration has put forth this idea that if you don't support invading and overthrowing any and every country in the Middle East then you are unpatriotic and weak.  Ron Paul really seems to be trying to set republican voters back on the right track. I think Obama/Paul in 08 would be just the right thing to put this country back on track. It would put an end to devisive politics and help the country get out of this Republican vs. Democrat way of thinking
Leave Kucinich alone.  He's also running for the presidency of the Lollipop Guild.

And Russert wasn't playing "gotcha" with Clinton.  Dodd clocked her by pointing out that what she said didn't answer the question.  Then Russert said he would give her another 20 seconds to actually answer the question.  If anybody was playing on that stage, it was Clinton playing "dodge it".  Edwards' new ad is hilarious because it's true.  And you can't accuse him of going negative because he's only putting her words out there so everyone else can see what so many have known for a long time.
Slick Romney, "principled"--give me a break. Under what rock are these people hiding.
This must be an especially dumb batch of Republicans.
Shadow, Hamden, CT

--- specifically, they are Republicans who voted for Bush twice. They don't represent the (traditional) Republican wing of the party.
Carrie, Eastern Iowa--Really, I don't even think you are from Iowa. You are clearly a Clinton supporter trying to disguise yourself. No independent reader would defend one candidate that much. I just wish you would be honest. My personal take is that you want a woman in the White House more than you want a real leader.

Well, that is crazy. In your attempt to make history (by having the first woman president), you would be voting for someone that will ultimately destroy the quality of the history for our children, grandchildren, etc. Women, I am all for women rights, but Hillary Clinton is just not the right person to lead this country. She won't even give a coherent answer on what she will do with Social Security. That is pretty darn important. And her vote for the Kyl-Lieberman bill, is precisely what has driven our gas prices through the roof. So before you cast your vote for Hillary Clinton, make sure you check your wallet and see how much is missing, and think about how much more her decisions affect poor and middle class people. I was told that if you consistently tell the truth you won't ever have to worry about getting caught in a lie. That is what happened at the debate, not because she is a woman, but b/c of her inconsistencies in her actions and words.
Richard in Idaho:

Ron Paul is "liberal" from a Democrat's perspective only about the war.  Otherwise, he is extremely conservative, if not reactionary in some respects.
TC:

Yes, Paul's stance on abortion, the gold standard and all other issues on which he and Obama are diametrically opposed will dove-tail nicely.
Mitt: "Liar"
Rudy: "Punk"
Fred: "Wal-Mart Greeter"
Scooter: "Traitor"
Cheney: "Whack Job"
Bush: "Drunken frat boy"
Yolanda,
You nailed it precisely!   Well said. Hillary's election would actually SET BACK the cause of WOMEN IN THE FUTURE IN POLITCS/GOVERNMENT (as well as making "W" and Nixon look "open", "honest", and "transparent" by comparison!).
What a bunch of whinning little bastards! Y'all should make a stand and run for something, or are ya chicken-sh*t.  It takes a whole lot of character to even consider running for president of a country on the brink of disaster - illegal immagrants, kids having kids, corruption, and just down-right idiots!
BEE WROTE: "I don't even know where they stand on issues. They are bunch of goof balls. (Republicans)" Sounds like she is the narrow minded uneducated goof ball voting for BILLARY! Shame on here! LOL!
