Rudy: Obama plan 'naive,' 'irresponsible'

Posted: Friday, November 02, 2007 12:21 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/National Journal’s Matthew E. Berger
WASHINGTON -- Giuliani said not negotiating with Iran may be the one area that he agrees with Clinton and said the position of Obama comes from lack of experience.

“I’ll use her words about it: ‘naïve and irresponsible,’ ” Giuliani said. “The idea of begging your enemy to negotiate with you is a fundamentally flawed position.”

He added, Obama “has very little experience, and he may be displaying that.”

Also, Giuliani picked up the endorsement of Sens. Kit Bond (R-Mo.) and Norm Coleman (R-Minn.). And he also defended Michael Mukasey’s nomination for attorney general. But he became most animated when asked about Obama’s assertion that he would negotiate with Iran without preconditions.

“If we learned anything from the 20th Century,” he said, “I think what we learned is you don’t beg to negotiate with dictators, tyrants and supporters of terrorists. What you do is you develop a position of real strength.”

He said he believed “that most of the Democrats will find this to be an irresponsible position,” but later said he was unsure about Clinton’s position on Iran, because she had changed it.

“In deference to Sen. Obama,” Giuliani said, “at least he sticks to his position.”

On Mukasey, Giuliani said he believed he would make “an exceptional attorney general” and called him a man of integrity. “I think it’s a shame this whole issue has been politicized, and it has been,” he said. “I believe ultimately he will be confirmed.”

Giuliani also defended the statistics he used in a New Hampshire radio ad about the survival rates for prostate cancer in the United States and England. He said the numbers were accurate for the time he had the disease and said that he actually overstated the British numbers.

"Those figures are absolutely accurate for the time I had them,” he said. “In fact, they remain accurate today. Still, the point is very, very clear -- even if you want to quibble about the statistics.”

Bond will serve as a national chairman for Giuliani’s campaign. He brings conservative credentials for a Republican candidate that has not won many other Senate endorsements. Before today, Giuliani’s only other Senate backer was embattled Louisiana Sen. David Vitter. Bond said he believed Giuliani could fight terrorism and strengthen the military and intelligence.

“These are the programs that I believe are good sound conservative values,” Bond said, “and Rudy Giuliani has proven he can implement those programs. When all of that is said and done, I think America is hungry for a man who means what he says and does what he says he will do.”

Coleman and Giuliani are a more likely pair, given that both are former New Yorkers, former mayors and former Democrats. Coleman said he believed mayoral experience would be an asset for Giuliani.

“Now we have an opportunity to have a mayor in the White House,” Coleman said.  “Someone who understands it’s about what you get done.”

Coleman also took a shot against Democratic lawmakers, saying, “[T]heir vision is that if we are nice to Ahmadinejad, he’ll be nice to us. The world doesn’t work that way.”

Did anyone else catch what mccain said about his rep competitors? He said they weren't qualified to lead our nation because they skipped military service when their nation needed them...gee that will winnow both fields quick eh? Lets coronate john now
I am so sick of hearing Obama called "Naive". Would any of the candidates like to elaborate on those comments? They are simply using his "lack of experience" as a default argument and wiping their hands clean of the matter. And what experience does Giuliani have as more than a prosecutor or a mayor? NONE. At least Obama has had experience in a position at the FEDERAL level which is certainly more than could be said of Giuliani (I don't count "U.S. Attorney").
Clinton is already "side & back-stepping" too much. This is a sure sign of weakness. No doubt about it, she is playing the "girly-girl" card and it is not impressive. How do you think the other WORLD leaders are going to view our country with her (of all people) at the helm. She is too arrogant. We won't have to worry about whether she attacks Iran or any other country because they will already be attacking us.
Tell me this:  How are the Democrats going to negociate with countries that are far from their point of view when they are to coward to have a debate on Fox News channel.  If they can't face FOX anchors they can't face the world.
If Rudy is elected, America is doomed. We'll never recover from it. He is a madman that will take us down a path of destruction that will make even Bush look good.
I think a democrat will beat him, but I'm praying we don't get that far and he loses in the primary.
We wouldn't have to "beg" to negotiate with Iran, they've been asking to negotiate with us for years but we'd rather bomb them!  As far as his "statistics" about prostate cancer, approximately 25 men per 100,000 die of prostate cancer every year in the US.  Approximately 25 men per 100,000 die of prostate cancer every year in Britain.  Figures don't lie, but liars figure.
George,
I can't believe you're from Texas. Are you retarded?
Rudy's message is simply in total agreement with whatever George W & company advocate.  He obviously is competing with Fred to be the replacement 'puppet' for Special Interests and the select few who have given George such strong overt and covert support.  Neither of them seem capable of or inclined to responsibly recognize and address the many failures of the Bush administration and instead only attack those who offer   sincere concern and honest suggestions.  'More of the same' literally is not what we need.
George Houston; the Democratic candidates won't debate on Faux News because they're too smart to walk into an ambush at a propaganda mill.
It's about a lot more than 9/11 and Rudy Giuliani is about a lot more!I was one of those who benefitted by the NYC clean-up that he did. And the rackets at the fish market...no one before him had the ----- to step in and get rid of the crime. Maybe some of you believe in Alice in Wonderland; I prefer the real thing--a gutsy world leader.  Go RUDY!
" John Mitchell (the first United States Attorney General ever to be convicted of illegal activities and imprisoned"

Didn't BushCo I spring him before he actually got there, like some sort of Scooter Libby fore-runner?

You know - that's why the neocons are scared even more witless than usual about Hilldawg getting in the White House. There won't be any presidential pardons for BushCo crimes.

Remember when the steaming liars made all those BS calims about the out-going staff "trashing" the White House? I'll bet Hilldawg does. Of course, I'm sure there are plenty of crimes to keep prosecutors busy, but the little drunken monkey election thief was SUCH a punk to the Clintons, coming in.
"Tell me this:  How are the Democrats going to negociate with countries that are far from their point of view when they are to coward to have a debate on Fox News channel.  If they can't face FOX anchors they can't face the world. "

Absolutely! And draft dodging cowards make me feel safe.
Rudy = Hillary on foreign policy. Excellent!!
I just thought I'd point something out

I'm only 17 and I can definately tell there's a distinct bias in every politcal story on this site...

I think news corporations should at least mix up some opinions and views to give people a more rounded perspective on what's going on. If they dont do that then what is the news? Just an opinionated talk show or blog...

I know this probably won't go through since it doesn't pertain to the topic...But I just felt like throwing it out there and seeing if it would get through and if people agree...
Folks,

Here is an interesting article, perhaps, we can all learn from it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/04/magazine/04obama-t.html?hp=&pagewanted=print
I voted President Ronald Regan twice as a proud republican. Now, I may have to vote for Giuliani or Romney during this presidential election. Sounds more frightening even day after Halloween! These two fellows have no chance even defeating tax hiking dems. Biden may be right. Giuliani is the biggest fool in this election. He will not even carry New York city, forget about carrying New York state. Romney will not even carry his own state (MA or MI -- pick either one). According to SNL Darrell Hammond, Fred Thompson is six-and half serious about his race. He is definitely not going long distance. How about Huckabee? Can he carry Arkansas and beat Clinton? I guess I am just looking for someone who can carry his own state unlike Gore.
How is bowing to veto overrides,''ignoring Congress''Houston? You forget[again]that Bush went to Congress and that it was a Democrat-led Congress that allowed the FISA-less wiretaps to remain in place. This is not ''ignoring' Congress either. Then ,obviously, there is Mukasey. Dictators place their guys in regardless of what governmental bodies[those not packed with their cronies,as we see in  Chavez'Venezuela],decide. Mukasey never would have gotton out of committee without Democrats voting in his favour. Bush would have had to send up another pick, which is not indicative of a ''dictatorship''. You cannot cite one single example in world history where a ''dictatorship''acts in such a manner. Not Stalin, nor Hitler. Not Pinochet nor Marcos. Not Castro nor Sese Seko. Not Peron nor Pot. Not Suharto, nor Tito. Not Ceauchescu, nor Minh. Not one single example.
Venezuela is no ''democracy''. You also forget that Hitler also won ''fair and square''same as Chavez. It is what both did after acquiring power.[Both using Enabling Acts].
You have no proof extant that Bush ''kept blacks from voting''. Even the liberal-dominated United States Civil Rights Commission, then led by a black woman, proves you wrong in its investigations of voting in Florida and later,in Ohio.[in Ohio, however, they DID find evidence of voter fraud initiated by the liberal voting organization ACORN which has been the subject of several arrests and federal investigations].
You are engaging in supposition. Not fact. Chavez as we speak has outlawed free assembly, the free press, redress for grievence, and has placed his hacks into his own supreme court without confirmation with the involvement of an opposition party due to the fact that an ''opposition party''does not exist, rewriting the constitution with his own pen, and utilizing his army against his own private citizens. You have a strange concept of what is and what is not ''democracy''.

Editors: Please corrrect this story:

Obama never said he would NEGOTIATE with Iran without preconditions - he said he would MEET with Iran's leaders without preconditions. There are plenty of meetings that do not lead to negotiations.
"On Mukasey, Giuliani said he believed he would make “an exceptional attorney general” and called him a man of integrity."

When a former federal prosecutor (I reefer to Rudy here) turns into a torture apologist (Mukasey has refused to oppose waterboarding) we know we are in trouble. I wonder what Rudy thinks of the Spanish Inquisition. Scratch that. I don't want to know.
Senator Obama also has a degree from Cambridge in International Relations.  I think it's about time we got an intelligent, educated, honest president out there meeting with and working with other countries.
Scares me enought that Rudy supports Michael Mukasey.
The new suggestion of Senator Obama (grand bargain)towards Iran which has been a taboo in US foreign policy for a long time, is a brave step towards a more balanced relations in the middle east.

The US unconditional friendship and support of Saudi Royal family has created a very unbalanced situation in the Middle East. Saudi Royal family has been sponsoring a distorted branch of Islam called "Wahabism", which is the ideology of all the terrorism schools and camps including Al-Qaeda and Taliban. This distorted ideology, considers all people who don't accept their distorted message infidels and consider their blood permissible to shed, that is why the followers of this ideology are responsible for killing of many Muslims specially shias in Iraq and Afghanistan only because of their religious differences. That is exactly why majority of people who participate in terrorism are Saudis and that is why Saudi Royal family has pledges lots of money to topple the shia dominated democratically elected government in Iraq.

Approaching Iran with the hope of normalizing the diplomatic relations will create a balanced environment in the Middle East. US will have more clout to persuade Saudis to stop their support for religious intolerance and terrorism schools.

Senator Obama's position certainly proves he does not belong to establishment approach of foreign policy which has done so much disservice to American interest in the middle east and has embolden terrorists in the middle east and caused lots of suffering for many people in the middle east.

I congratulate him for his independence and professionalism and bravery.
RG should not waste any money in this presidential election. I don't think he is going to have his money back.
Houston, we have problem -- [[Venezuela already has a democracy, and a president that won an honest election, unlike,]]

Dude, you are really out there if your think Chavez is elected. I mean, what kind of credibility do you think you have making lame statements like above?  You stick up for Chavez, who Castro's right hand man, and dump on the the US?  There are people on the left that one can disagree with and still hold a decent conversation with.  There are others, like you, that are so far out on a limb that you don't know whether to laugh at them, cry about them, or to call the authorities.  With you, we'll trying laughing, and then see where that takes us.
Pete I bet you don't even live in Obama's distict!
MSNBC:

I don't know why you have a problem reading a comment that asks for a factual correction of your story. Here goes, and please don't ingore my post this time:

You write:"But he (Rudy Giuliani) became most animated when asked about Obama’s assertion that he would negotiate with Iran without preconditions."

WRONG!

Obama never said he would NEGOTIATE without preconditions - he said he would MEET. Two very different beasts - not even apples and oranges. Countless meetings end in an impasse.

Can someone explain how the ex-mayor of New York, with no real experience in foreign policy, no federal government experience (other than cashing federal checks) and no real record, is leading the Republican polls? Wake up people. Start looking into the candidates and their records, not just going with name recognition. The U.S. Presidential race should not be decided like a high school class president race.
Rudy Giuliani you are a better fit for the saprano's. You always run around talking people who don't have foreign policy experience like Senator Obama. But where did you get you foreign policy experience and oh by the way Rudy, the Bronx is not a foreign country! I suspect you need to try something else other then running for president because your not ready to play in that league yet. Maybe if you contact Joe Torre, he can get you a job as an assistance coach for the dodgers. Ops, never mind we want to win too!
Why are journalists so lazy? Why didn't this lazy journalist do his homework before posting this article? Obama never said he would NEGOTIATE without preconditions - he said he would be willing to MEET with the Iranian leadership in order to open up talks and diffuse this drumbeat to war.

Another hatchet job on Obama.
Ruddy is nothing but shadow hero crated by the 9/11. He's a cheap beneficiary of the American grief and he now thinks he's ''all that'' and that he is ably qualify to rule United States. He has to learn the art of leadership by first learning the science of public speaking and reaction to issues
HEY MR PETE FROM ILLINOIS,

I AM VERY SORRY FOR YOU AND YOU WERE PAID TO POST THIS ONLINE. YOU SAID THAT YOU DIDN'T VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA WHEN HE RAN FOR SENATOR, SO YOU HAVE NO SAY AND JUST CLOSE YOUR .... AND STAY QUIET.
I do have a question on this issue. I belieeve that Obama said that he would "personally" negotiate with the leaders of Iran. The article implies that he said he would "pursue negotiations with Iran." There is a significant difference. There is no question that negotiations with Iran are the only thing that can save the United States from yet another lost war, however I do not believe that those negotiations should be conducted personally by the President. That is why we have the State Department and why there can be special ambassadors appointed to conduct these kind of actions. If, as President, Obama thinks he would personally negotiate with Iran then that is the thought of a naive and inexperienced individual which so many say he is. It is also the thought process of someone who considers himself to be the final answer on a point, and that is a dangerous idea as we well know from the unilateral actions of the current White House occupant. Even given the fact that Obama is very intelligent and Bush is dumber than an anvil, it would be foolish and unproductive for a President to negotiate face to face with an opposing nation.

If Obama is saying he would personally negotiate then he is wrong and is showing himself to be very naive and in need of some more years of seasoning. If he is saying his administration would pursue negotiations rather than the current bombastic threats and postures of war, then he is right. Unfortuntely I suspect its the former; he is young and has very little experience, particularly in the international arena.
obom(b)a THE GUY IS A 'MUSLIM' Wake up we might as well turn the country to Osama
All the weak-kneed leftists on this board have forgotten that while the American public is tired of the war in Iraq, the majority of Americans still want the U.S. to withdraw when the time is right. Indeed, no one wants another war, but we must use war rhetoric in dealing with an intransigent Iran. Oh, would you leftist morons suggest we negotiate with Al Qaeda, too? When the day comes that we are fighting terrorists here at home, you treasonous bastards will be dragged from your homes and gutted. Count on it!
So who died and left Rudy Guiliani Mr. Know It? He knows nothing other than Like Biden said, a noun, a verb and 9-11 -- and oh, being a drag queen.  If it weren't for 9-11 his poll numbers wouldn't even be 17%.  He's been captializing on it ever since.  Just because he was Mayor of NY what foreign relations experience does he have?  None.  His numbers have been UNDER Obama's and so has his intellect.  He's also as usual exaggerating, Obama never said 'beg'.  Apparently Obama struck a chord.  Obama's absolutely correct and they all know he is and that is why they've all been following Obama at every turn on one side of their mouth and blasting him on the other.

Giuliani is a fascist.  Electing him president will bring us right back to 1984.  Not the Reagan years though, the book.
I, most likely, would not vote for a republican during the general election.  However, the ire expressed by the writers of a number of these posts seems a bit imbalanced.  It seems to me that either MSN is biased (which is quite impossible correct?) or the vast majority of these posts have been written by members of Obama's campaign team.

That being said, I would like to see an objective review of both candidates, and a review of recent history and how these two candidates have played a role by those who actually study it -- not these poorly thought out posts.

Anyone who has been involved with the legal system from the enforcement or prosecution end would agree with Giuliani's statement that Obama is naive -- if one were to view a dictator as an uncooperative suspect or witness.  I would like to hear further thoughts on this.

I don't know I may be naive as well but if you think about it sitting down with the leaders of countries that oppose us idealogically might not be the worst way to go. For years this administration threatened and harangued Kim Jong Il. When they finally reversed their position and sat down with him, he asked for a few dollars(relatively speaking) some security issues to be addressed, and just a little respect. Do you all remember when that USAF spy plane was forced down in China? At first everyone was beating war drums and looking to send in an extraction team. What did we do? We sent Gen. Powell over there with his hat in his hand and APOLOGIZED! The results of these types of diplomatic overtures speak for themselves. My point is we don't have to threaten or harass other nations to get them to do what we want in fact it is counter productive. We are the Platinum Standard in the world when it comes to our ability to create good will unfortunately we can create ill will just as easily. It's time for a change, if you can't get behind Obama for whatever reason at least get behind the message. Talk is a lot cheaper than bloodshed.
On what Pete, from Chicago had to say about Obama.
I agree....all the people running for Presidental seat are elected officials. Soooo, someone tell me when they actually are "working" instead of out on the stump??
I think it has come down to picking the candidate with the most experience and least dirt. They aren't front runners.
Rudy Giuliani is a clown.
OK, I cannot even remember the last time we elected someone from congress president.   That knocks out Hillary and Obama as well as John Mc Cain.   Hillery's lead is mainly because people feel sorry for her because her husband is a SEX ADDICT and continually cheats on her.   Obama, lets face it, the south is still too racist for him to be elected at this time.

Now as for the Democrats only Governor, that being New Mexico's Richardson.   The man wants to drain the great lakes to supply all the morans that moved to the dessert.   By saying that, he has just given up the states of; Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennslyvainia, and New York.   None of those states are ever going to give up their fresh water for the for the people down there.

Now as for the Republicans the only men who have the a shot and why.

Rudy Gulliani, he is respected on both sides.

Mitt Rommeny, until JFK no one thought a Catholic could win.   Just like now no one thinks that a Morman can win.   History does repeat itself in this country.

Fred Thompson, people in this country are always facinated with people from Hollywood.   Probably because they recognize the name.

Think about it the man who played Gopher on the Love Boat served in congress.   Client Eastwood was a mayor.   Sonny Bono was a mayor as well.   Arnold Swartznagger is serving as Governor of California, a position which former actor Ronald Reagan held before he became President.
