Edwards decries Hillary's 'double-speak'

Posted: Friday, November 02, 2007 1:39 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Tricia Miller
Cheraw, SC -- Campaigning here this morning, Edwards decried “the politics of double-speak” he said was displayed in Tuesday night’s debate in Philadelphia.

“Now I have a really simple rule,” he said. “When you get asked a yes-or-no question, you can’t answer it yes-and-no. That doesn’t work, and we saw some of that the other night.”

“What I heard was Sen. Clinton saying she wanted to be for change, but defending a broken system in Washington,” he continued. “Saying that she wanted to end the war, but she would keep combat troops in Iraq who would continue combat missions in Iraq. Saying that she would stand up to George Bush on the issue of going to war in Iran, but voting for a resolution in the Senate that enabled George Bush to do exactly what he wanted to do. Saying that she didn’t want to change anything about Social Security in public, but then in private saying she might be for raising the cap on the Social Security tax. See, my view is, we need to say the same thing all the time.”

The Edwards campaign released a video -- entitled the "Politics of Parsing" -- hitting Clinton on the same point.

In a media availability following the event, Edwards downplayed any implication that Clinton should be treated differently because she’s a woman. He was surprised to hear about the exclusion of Stephen Colbert from the South Carolina Democratic primary in an interview with CNN following the availability, adding with a laugh that he “kind of liked” the extra attention Colbert had brought to the race.

That video was awesome!!!

great video - and exactly right.
Too bad Edwards can't come up with any issues to discuss.  Frankly, I don't really know where he stands.  However, I know what he thinks of Hillary.

Obama and Edwards are just competing for 2nd place.  This is where Hillary wants them.  Nobody pays attention to the rest of the candidates.

Hillary will dust herself off and get back in the ring.  She'll be better prepared to debate the Repugs.

If Obama and Edwards were smart, they would try to leave themselves a good reputation so they can go on in other political arenas.  I will be glad to listen to Obama in a few years.

As for Edwards, its all over but for the crying.
John Edwards – the politics of desperation.
I am a woman and I will not vote for a candidate that tells me to vote on gender.  That goes for male or female.  If any of the male candidates tell men to vote for them because he is a male they would be dead in the water.  Why should Hillary get away with this?  Should Obama starting telling african americans to vote for him because he is black?  That would go over big, NOT.
Edwards isn't desperate he has positions and is resolute.

CSH do you have any idea what a normal debate is like? You probably have no clue. You probably are just reacting with emotion. You probably are an idiot.

The video was great.

Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions.

BionicWoman, I agree, Edwards came across as a one-issue candidate "I don't like Hillary, and neither should you" - although I can't say I disagree, it's a pathetic strategy and comes across as such.  I can't understand why the media seems to be painting his performance as such a victory, it all seemed pretty played out to me.  Not to mention, unlike Obama, he hasn't followed it up with any policy talk, just more anti-Hillary spin.
But, I disagree that the others are playing for second.  Short of Richardson, who probably just should have worn knee-pads to the debate...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! LOL! Great video Edwards!
This is brilliant. I want Edward to play the video in NH, Iowa, and South Carolina. This will make a good advertisement.

What is all your problems w/ Hillary using for once only one of the many strategies that every and any politician employs when attempting to win?  You people act like you've never covered politics before.  What difference is there between Hillary playing the 'woman' card in this particular instance to get past and, yes, change the focus from, the one (and in her case only) really unstellar performance of her campaign, from Rudy playing (in his case, the only one he has) the "9/11" card, McCain playing the "tortured prisoner" card, Romney, the "religious persecution"; Obama, the "new kid";...ad infinitum.  It's POLITICS people!  When did you ever think ANYONE is in it who doesn't play games to win?
Wouldn't you?
Guaranteed that when the furor goes away, so does the card.

What about Edwards double speak?  He is the Mitt Romney of the Democrat Party.  He supported it before he was against it.

Edwards was a partner in a hedgefund and made big bucks with no apologies as his fund foreclosed on homes in New Orleans, SC, and Iowa.  Now he attacks hedgefunds.

He attacks Democrats who he says "sell out" to corporations.  This is the same John Edwards who was a founding member of the DLC's 'New Democrats' a conservative Democratic, pro- biz organization.

Edwards will say or do anything to win.  Watch for the kids to get trotted out over winter break.
Excerpt from NYT article:

"Hillary Clinton is relying on her Democratic audience to understand that all her peculiar positions and triple-waffles have to do with a fear of being demagogued by the Republicans in the general election. But you would have to be a very, very committed Hillaryite to be comfortable listening to two solid hours of dodging and weaving on everything from her vote on the Iran resolution to her husband’s attempt to keep records of their White House communications secret until after 2012. (“... Certainly we’ll move as quickly as our circumstances and the processes of the National Archives permits.”)

On Social Security, the underlying message seems to be that Clinton will not support any effort to keep the program solvent by eliminating the cap on Social Security taxes until she gets elected president and sets up a bipartisan commission to provide political cover. The problem with that, as Barack Obama pointed out, is that you don’t arrive in the White House with a mandate for anything more daring than appointing a bunch of people to do a study. And when you’re talking about taxing income above $97,500 the same way we do income of, say, $30,000, it’s not really helpful to describe it as “a trillion-dollar tax increase on middle-class families.”

Clinton needs to ration her obfuscations. Otherwise, she risks looking as silly as she did at the end of the debate, when she gave a perfectly rational explanation of why she once said that New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan to allow illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses “makes a lot of sense,” then raised her hand a minute later to add that the fact that she understood why Governor Spitzer was trying to do it did not mean that she thought it should actually be done."

Hillary's "Double-Speak"?

Does Hillary know any other kind of speech?  Oh yeah, triple-speak.
Edwards is right. It was dumb to keep Stephen Colbert off the ballot. He would have brought attention and interest to South Carolina. Stephen would have gotten disaffected people, who might not have otherwise voted, to the polls to vote for him and a good portion would have changed their minds for a serious candidate once in the booth.
John Edwards slammed Hillary C. by saying the only reason the Republicans hate her is because she is the easiest to win against. I guess the inference is that Republican (Hillary bashers) are phycotic and that they will not bash John Edwards because he can win against them??????? Yeh right. Sounds like G.W. parsing the facts. Used to like Edwards, but all him and Obama have left is to attack the H.C. crowd. They are doing what the republicans want and do very well. Bash the competion because they have no political policy of there own that can compete. You want Yes or No answers the go republican. The world is not Black and white or as G.W. painted - You are either with us or you are against us. Or you are not supporting the troops if you do not support the war.
BionicWoman, Tucson, Arizona: '... I will be glad to listen to Obama in a few years.

As for Edwards, its all over but for the crying...'

Meet your next PRESIDENT, BionicWoman !!
Who do you think that will be ?
Edwards or Obama ?

Crooked Hillary is toast !!
She can't answer a question honestly !!
Does she support IDs for illegal immigrants ?
You tell me, Bionic ?

Time for you to get some brains installed, BionicWoman, some real brains.....
They'll help you choose a better candidate next time !!

Hillary is dead...
The blood is in the water...
The sharks are circling...

Bye bye Hillary !!
Edwards is coming across as borderline sexist, because, first off, the same stances Hilary took and got killed for having taken, both Edwards and Obama said the same thing after her. The debate was biased, at best, and the simple set-up of a true and technical debate proves my point valid. Edwards really came across as reaching during the debate, and had it not been for the flub on handling the answer regarding drivers' licensing Edwards would have had made zero progress during the two hours. Every time he, or Obama, attacked her, it was handled deflty and definitively. Hilary would address an issue, explain it in clear understandable English, and Edwards 10 minutes later would claim she hadn't said that. He was saving sound bytes up the entire debate instead of actually saying anything. "If you want a candidate who does (bad, bad, bad) vote for her, otherwise you have a choice." You're brave enough to call her out by name but not brave enough to say that you're that other choice? Oh, that's right! If you did that, you'd be getting in the direct limelight to all of Dodd, Obama, and Biden who wouldn't like his dismissal of their candidacy. Edwards is a moron, and he will remind everyone why he didn't win last election, why Kerry lost last election, and why he really isn't going to win this one either.
Women are the majority.

65% of women vote.

62% of men vote.

82.5 Million Mothers

152 million women.
148 million men.

Women are the majority, vote early, vote, often.
Hillary is full of double talk, but having a guy (Edwards) to talk about how he is for the poor and yet lives in a 36 million dollar house and gets $400 hair cuts to talk about honesty and integrity is a laugh. I mean a big laugh. Give me a break you hypocrit!!!!
Yeah! John needs to be resolute in fighting the good fight. Bush has screwed things so bad and to many comgressmen have helped him perpertrate his nasty business. The truth stands alone. Call it like it is. What goes around needs to come back around.
Edwards video "The Politics of Parsing" was actually in response to the Clinton video "The Politics of Pile On" in which the Clinton campaign was complaining of the attention she received particularly from Edwards.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk16oxb4Ck4
The response video is brilliant. Also it shows the quick response capabilities of the Edwards team.
OK. Let's see how Edwards drinks his own KoolAid.

Mr Edwards, have you stopped beating your wife? Yes or No?
Right on Sen. Edwards-------------Keep showing what a liar Hillary really is!!!!
I listened to the "so-called" debate and I don't know where Hillary stands on the driver's license issue either or what she wants to do about social security. Edwards is right that this is really some kind of double talk, or, at least confusing talk. To attack him for pointing this out is absurd, and, who can blame him for trying to use it to his advantage. I don't get the problem with that, but I do get the problem with Hillary.
On the driver's license issue, I think it's crazy to assume that people who came here illegally would have a problem with driving illegally. For our own protection I think it's better to try and control that in some manner, and, as Hillary DID say, Washington has dropped the ball in providing a solution.
BionicWoman - you must have been living under a rock!
Edwards has released specific proposals from the gitgo! while Hillary entered the prez race seeking a conversation. LOL Then along came the contest for a favorite songe. Then came the Mafia video.
Jeeeez!  Hillary isn't serious about the issues.

Great video!
Hillary is waltzing around the issues - while seeking the presidency!!
There's NO double talk or parsing here.

Iraq = realistic (if ANY ONE is left behind -- including state department, you need troops. If ANY Al Queda is in Iraq, don't we need to defend the new Iraq government from them? Do we want another Taliban government??). Social Security = realistic (how can you have a numbers plan, when the first part of the plan is fiscal responsibility. If there's still a problem after this, then that's when you deal with numbers!). Immigration license = she fumbled on this; should've kept to her initial answer and said nothing else. Iran = doing what is necessary (Google search Wesley Clark for all the reasons...).

When Edwards spoke about himself, his vision, his priorities, and his principles, he was a strong candidate. Now, all he is is a typical political stooge. Democratss don't attact the integrity of other democrats (especially those with over 35 years in the public sector).
Don't know where Edwards stands on issues? I have a suggestion. PAY ATTENTION!!! I know where he stands full well. Don't look into the process at the 11th hour and claim you don't know where someone stands on issues(unless they won't answer questions directly like the current "front runner"). You've had, close to, a year if not longer. If your that slow and uninformed, please don't vote. This election will be too important.
I'm for the poor, but I work for a hedgefund. I'm worried about what the sub-prime mortgage crisis is doing to folks, but I've got half my net worth invested in a hedgefund that is foreclosing on homeowners in New Orleans.  I won't take public funding for my campaign, but I'm taking public funding for my campaign.  I won't take money from lobbyists who work for the special interests, like John Kerry and I did in 2004, but I'll take money directly from the health insurance companies and trial lawyers who work in the same firms as the lobbyists.  I voted for the war in Iraq, but I apologized for that--not during the 2000 campaign when it might have meant something, but now when it means nothing other than maybe some liberal democratic primary votes.  I'll never attack another Democrat, if that's what you want, I'm not your guy (Iowa 2004), but I will relentlessly attack Sen. Clinton (campaign 2007).  Puhleeze.
I don't hate Clinton, I just don't think she can beat Giuliani, because STUPID people don't "parse" they don't understand complex answers to complex questions. Edwards is sharp at campaigning, he has made NO mistakes a Republican could exploit, and once IN office he would be effective. Its getting a Democrat into office I am worried about. Any of them would be great. I know Edwards can beat Giuliani.
I'm support John Edwards because I like his ideas and proposals.  I also feel he is by far the most electable Democrat.  The GOP is practically salivating to have Hillary run so that they can spew the most venomous lies about her--it will make the Swiftboating of John Edwards look like child's play.  I like Obama, but feel he's not quite experience enough to be President.  That said, I'll vote for any of the top Dems.  Bush and his cronies have been the worst Administration ever, and we can't afford another Republican in the White House.
Remember people this is basically A LONG JOB INTERVIEW for the MOST IMPORTANT JOB in the company (USA). The democratic panel will recommend its best candidate to be compared to the republican's best candidate for the final interview.

All resumes are in.  We looked thru them, diced them up & made necessary notation.  We've interviewed them several times to make sure that they truly did all those things they said in their resumes as part of their qualifications, questioned them on their visions so we know what direction they want to take the company to, asked them specific questions relating to the taking care of existing challenges (like Iraq, Global Warming, Healthcare, Economy, etc) so we know what their approaches are on resolving these challenges and evaluate not just based on their working experience but on their life experience to make sure that we choose someone who is THE BEST FIT for this particular company in this particular time.

Now, in the last interview Hillary was asked several questions on how she’s going to resolve our existing challenges and we didn’t get any concrete answer. She was asked about her experience as the 1st lady which she put on her resume as apart of her qualification, but didn’t want to answer and wasn’t willing to provide additional information as to why we have to account that particular experience.  SO, if we have a candidate applying for a position where he/she will be working for US, would you really want to hire this person to work for you?  Would we really hire someone to work for us who doesn’t stand for anything, who can’t give a straight answer, who refused to give backup documents to her experience, who basically said “Trust me, I’m the best candidate for the job! Just take my word for it!”  Are you kidding me?  If we’re hiring a painter to paint our house and of all the painters who have given us their quotes, pass jobs, recommendations, showed us their qualifications, explained to us what they’re going to do with the house and one painter said I refuse to show you what I’ve done & refused to tell you what I’m going to do with your house but you can take my word that my job is good.  There’s NO WAY any of us would hire the painter who can't give a straight answer.  SO WHY ARE WE CONSIDERING TO HIRE SOMEONE LIKE THAT TO BE OUR PRESIDENT?

These candidates are applying to WORK FOR US, we are PAYING THEIR SALARIES! The American people better start acting like THE EMPLOYERS that we are or we’ll be shooting ourselves in the foot.  If Hillary keeps doing what she’s doing, she’ll be out of the top candidate category just like that!  I have a lot of interviewing to do… and she’s wasting my time.  I want a candidate who takes the job he/she’s applying seriously.
you say edwards would say anything to win   well ha     dont they all   promises never kept  just to get into the white house  not a honest bone in the lot of them
I would just like to make a mention on Hillary Clinton not being electable.  If this is true that means no democrat is electable.  Hillary stands for the core values of the democratic party.  If she can't win no dem can win.  Also on the license issue Hill said it made a lot of sense to her that he would do something like that, but she does not think that it is the best thing that can be done.  However what are the gov's to do about the illegal aliens when national government does nothing.
remember john kerry? if hillary wins the nomination, she will loose the general election because her republican opponent will label her as a "flip-flopper", which she is anyway. one funny thing about her is this, when bush poll number is up, she support bush or she runs to the middle, when bush poll number is down, she become a liberal; you can't have it both ways, lady.

Hillary was right on Iraq and Social Security. If you touch the issue of SS you blow the electon; its called the third rail for a reason.

Her response about Iraq was good too. Some troops will have to stay, while most will be pulled out. I think most everybody agrees with that.

She did blow the drivers license question though. She should oppose them for illegals. I guess she's worried about losing liberals and hispanics.  She can still come out opposed though and say she just supports governors in states doing what they think is best with a tough situation.

She's gotta drop the gender stuff though. That turns off women and men both.
Folks, wake up! Hillary has always supported communism....read the book Blood Sport! I want America to stay free, free of Hillary!
I have to sympathize with Edwards despite disagreeing with his views. For months he has been talking about his positions but the media isn't giving him any coverage because they prefer to look at this as a 2-person raise. I think Edwards made the right move in going negative, and quite frankly with her evasiveness Hillary opened herself up for it.
mark: Do you really think one has to be poor to sympathize with the poor?
John Edwards completely dominated in the debate. He did a fantastic job and hit the nail on the head perfectly, numerous times. Hillary is the best chance the Democrats have - to lose that is. Hillary is clearly the media's choice as well as the republican's choice to be the nominee. She's the one that the republicans might be able to defeat and they know that. The corporations know that too. The corporations also know that if she was to win then she is the one Democrat that is cozy with lobbyists and corporations so they win either way having her as the nominee. You fellow Democrats that are sleeping in the Hillary camp need to understand this. We need serious change. Edwards is the one that can make that happen. Bill Clinton was a great president, but voting for Hillary is the worst and most blind action you can take if you want real change. Think before you vote. This election is way too important.
If you want a President that has no electability choose Edwards. Was'nt he on the Kerry ticket that left Bill Clinton on the sidelines and lead us Democrats to defeat?
i'm canadian but have a keen interest in US politics, as i do in canadian politics. it's unfortunate they attack eachother like a bunch of kids in a school yard. lawyers, millionariares, billionaires, judges, doctors, etc etc. they all act like kids. i admire john edwards but he is proving to be just another kid in the schoolyard. stick to your priorities john and you may do a-ok
great video. Why didn't you finish it off with a clip of her telling Obama that she is the only one that can work the system (washington) to get things done. Then do all the double talk, a couple scandals, then have her say it again with a wink. She definately can work the system, but I doubt much else. Look what she has done for Health Care in the last 14 years NOTHING! WOW what a leader......
John Edwards keeps attacking Hillary on the issues because she is the only issue he can complain about.  She's winning and he's losing and that is the only issue he's concerned about.
"I'm simply amazed!!!! The United States, has astronomical problems, i.e., crime, gangs, trade deficits, high taxes, hight fuel prices, costly defense, poor economy, no foreign policy, layers and layers of wortless bureaucratic government employees tax payers are required to support, huge debt, expensive health care, high unemployment, and just about anything you are willing to name and the issue of whether an illegal alien/worker should receive a drivers license pops up. No wonder the country is in such a mess. The drivers license issue is up to immigration and the police. I could care less if Santa Claus drives so long as he has a valid drivers license, car insurance, and he doesn't run over me with his Sleigh.  Let's build on the real issues. Senator Clinton is concerned about getting America back on track.  Let's pitch in and assist her. I'm very concerned aobut health care for all Americans.  When I see second world countries providing 100% health care to their citizens I'm embarrassed to claim I'm from America."
I don't trust Obama, I just don't think he can beat Giuliani, because  people don't understand complex answers to complex questions. Hillary is sharp at campaigning, she has not made any mistakes a Republican could exploit, and in office she would be effective.  I know Hillary can beat Giuliani.
Obama is so naive and inexperienced.
Don't know where HILLARY stands on issues? I have a suggestion. PAY ATTENTION!!! I know where she stands full well. Don't look into the process at the 11th hour and claim you don't know where someone stands.  You've had, close to, a year if not longer. If your that slow and uninformed, please don't vote. This election will be too important.
OMG! finally someone acknowledges the travisty that is hillary clinton. oh! amen mbot565
