Clinton files in NH; talks Iran, gender

Posted: Friday, November 02, 2007 2:03 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
CONCORD, NH -- Clinton filed here for the New Hampshire primary on the last day possible, attracting hundreds of supporters to the state House steps. And in a news conference after the event, she answered questions on how her gender might be affecting the race, on Iran, on immigration and the drivers' license issue she stumbled on in Tuesday's debate, and on criticism about the lack of media access to her.

Asked if she was being treated differently because she's a woman, Clinton said she didn't think her opponents were piling on because she's a woman, but rather because she's winning. On Iran, she repeated recent statements that her vote to call the country's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization was not a vote to authorize using force against the country. And when asked what she thought about Obama's proposal to deal directly with Iran's leadership, she said there would be opportunities for the president to be involved in diplomacy with the country, but that it had to be planned and managed.

Clinton added that talking directly with Ahmadinejad could undermine and short circuit the diplomatic process, and that the army and the Quds Force were not under his control. "I do not believe the president should initially be engaged in personal diplomacy. I don't think that's the smart course to take," she said. "I don't think you promise without preconditions for the president to meet with the leaders of antagonistic states and get nothing in return, and you thereby undermine even or short circuit the diplomatic process."

For her filing, the New Hampshire secretary of state's office was mobbed by reporters, photographers, and camera crews -- some of whom arrived hours before the event and stood on desks in the small office to get a good shot. The media stood behind a velvet rope as they watched her file. No other candidate has received the velvet rope treatment.

Clinton joked when she entered the room that were not "as many people here when I did this twice before." A supporter shouted, "She's in" at the moment the senator signed the paper.

"I couldn't be happier or prouder to be throwing my hat into the ring," Clinton later said at the news conference following the filing. She joked several times about not knowing yet when the state's primary would be.

Right on, Dave, TN...Condi has class and grace while the Shrillary has crass and sour grapes

Whaaaaaaaat?  Anyone who think Condi has class hasn't watched any of her great diplomatic work.  She's as embarassing as that loser GW.  Good riddens to both, the election can't come soon enough!
Heaven help us if this women gets elected.  Insincere, self-involved, and can look a person in the eye and lie.  We need someone to help our Country.  Not do further damage.
Ok-can we all just get along and start seriously looking for the best candidate to represent us? None of the candidates are answering the real questions that are haunting our society such as if elected how will they react to the war in Iraq? We can't just go in there and withdraw our troops immediately- that would be a slap in the face and portray us as having done something wrong in the first place. How will they handle issues such as social security, what can they do to help boost American economy? The real matter is that taxes need to be raised on those who haven't been paying their fair share of the taxes. No one wants to hear it , especially the wealthy, but it is high time that they pay higher taxes according to their income. The middle clases and poor have kept this country going long enough, now let the rich do it so that we can enjoy some luxuries in life. The real candidates are Hillary and Barack. Obama is at least answering the questions even if he doesn't have a planned agenda. On the other hand, Clinton isn't saying anything. If she thinks that she's going to win because she is a woman- well she better wake up. Women around the world are glad that a woman is running but it's going to take more than just being a woman to garner our support. She had better start standing for something instead of falling for anything. One more thing also, her slight comments about Mississippi and southern states have hurt her- she has forgotten where her legacy that she is running on was made. As for Obama and his toughness on her- i hope that people around the world know that a man can be a firm ruler and still have respect for women and treat them as such because of the influence and upbringing that he had so to all of you that want to question that, consider it answered.
There is a pattern of disinformation and character assasination that MSNBC is involved in. Chris Mathews is a sleazy guy and so is Tim Russert. But never mind, I am a male but I support her because she is strong, has exercised more good policy judgements throughout her political career than bad, and has stood up to plenty of character assasination dirty politics of republican machinery and trounced them.

What???????????????? it is amazing that whenever it stinks it isn't Hillarys fault. It is a right wing conspiracy, I didn't know that those files from my law office where in the White House, I mean really when you investigate do you really want all the files? (Whitewater) I only voted on the war in Iraq because I didn't take the time to fully investigate it so therefore I was misled. Please Hillary has always brought EVERYTHING on herself. If it looks like a duck and quacks like duck and walks like a duck guess what? it is a duck, but in this case there is an exception its a snake. why are Hillary supporters so DUMB?
Those who say Hillary played the gender card with the pile on thing are those who are seeing gender instead of issues. By the way, it was the reporters who first interpreted that as the gender card. Are they helping us determine the best candidate? Or are they obscuring the candidates' qualities in their efforts to score more viewers with their sensational rhetoric? Tough as it is, our job now, as voters, is to ignore all the B.S. that is being slung and slopped around on news talk. Best of luck.
PITOUS YOU ARE A TOTAL AND COMPLETE FOOL.  YOU SHOULD PRAY TO YOUR GOD AND ASK WHY YOU WERE BORN. OBAMA IS NOT A MUSLIN AND YOU SIR ARE A LIAR AND AND A BIGOT.
THEY LET ANYONE SERVE IN THE MILITARY THESE DAYS SO I WOULD NOT BRAG ON THAT OH IGNORANT ONE.
SENATOR CLINTON DOES NOT NEED THE LIKES OF YOU TO SUPPORT HER, YOU ARE A POOR EXCUSE FOR AN AMERICAN.
No matter how many comments are made about Hillary Clinton she will win the nomination and possibly the presidency and the commentor's will be biting their nails with envy. But if Giuliani wins they'll drink to doomsday. Face the fact its between either one of them but I still say Hillary is going to come out the winner.
Pitous, why are you repeating the lie foisted by Rush and other right wing hacks that Obama is a Muslim? His father was a Muslim (like most Africans from his part of the continent), but Obama has never been a Muslim. He did not go to a madrassas as a kid in Indonesia, he went to a public school. Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country but the public schools are not madrassas. Thi sis the same sort of cheap shot as focusing on his middle name of Hussein, which is a common name throughout the world. He was given that name at birth when Saddam was an unknown. To somehow equate the two (which is what the nuts on the right try to do) is slanderous and appeals only to the ignorant. We know that George Bush and George Washington share the same name, but that's where the comparison ends. I'd also like to know what you mean when you say Obama is "intelligent but dumb." What? By the way, you don't get to be the editor of the Harvard Law Review by being dumb. In fact, if you look into how Obama got that position (which is elected) it was largely because he was seen as the person most capable of bringing together the warring factions of Review editors whose political positions threatened to tear the publication apart. Obama was (correctly) seen as the guy who could exercise diplomacy and intelligent compromise to keep people together. With any luck we'll have a chance to see him do the same as president.
Hey Mark, from Rochester, NY, you are right on target.

Hillary has done a great job as Senator for our state and she would make an excellant President.  The driver's license for illegal immigrants is a complex issue, and I feel she did the best she could with her response.  It's not her proposal, it's our Governor's, she was just her opinion of it at this time.
I don't understand all the hoopala about a woman presidential candidate. Afterall the men have been  doing such a great job!!!!
You can really tell who is writing the comments.  They are diffenantly hard core republicans.  I am a democrate, but not voting for Hillary.  Not because of the rediculous reasons that have been given.  That was just more pile on.  If anyone can tell me Tim Russart did not pile it on to Hillary more than the others, please prove it to me.  As far as the answers she gave, how many promises have been made by candidates and never kept?  At least she is leaving options open.  Bush (who I deplore) shouldn't talk to the leader of Iran.  He has deplomats to do that.  I want a candidate that realizes that you can't make thousands of promises knowing you can't keep them.  Once they get in office they realize they have a congress to deal with.  People are absolutly insane to think that a president has all the power.  In this case Bush does because his republican congress seen to that.  He is not a president he is a dictator.  As far as Hillary using the gender card.  This is the first time I have heard her hint at it.  How many times have we heard Obama talk about his race?  Just thursday or friday in S.C., and oh yes all of a sudden he had a southern accent.  What about Guliani and 911?  Why don't you all just jump on the band wagon of "kill Hillary"!  Go for it, because even though she isn't my candidate I have a strong feeling you are talking about our next president of the United States. Go girl!

Senators,

Your vote against  an amendment to the Immigration Bill 1348, to make English America's official  language is astounding. On D-Day no less when we honor those that sacrificed  in order to secure the bedrock character and principles of America . I can  only surmise your vote reflects a loyalty to illegal aliens.

I don't much care  where you come from, what your religion is, whether you're black, white or  some other color, male or female, democrat, republican or independent, but I  do care when you're a United States Senator, representing citizens of America  and vote against English as the official language of the United States

Your vote reflects  betrayal, political surrender, violates your pledge of allegiance, dishonors historical principle, rejects patriotism, borders on traitorous action and, in  my opinion, makes you unfit to serve as a United States Senator... impeachment, recall, or other appropriate action is warranted.

Worse, 4 of you  voting against English as America 's official language are presidential  candidates: Senator Biden, Senator  Clinton, Senator Dodd, and Senator Obama.

Those 4 Senators  vying to lead America but won't, or don't have the courage, to cast a vote in  favor of English as America's official language when 91% of American citizens want English officially designated as our language.

This is the second  time in the last several months this list of Senators have disgraced themselves as political hacks... unworthy as Senators and certainly unqualified to serve as President of the United States.

If America is as angry as I am, you will realize a back-lash so stunning it will literally rock  you out of your panties... and preferably, totally out of the United States  Senate.

The entire  immigration bill is a farce... your action only confirms this really isn't  about America ; it's about self-serving politics... despicable at  best.

Never argue with an idiot; they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."  ~ anonymous

To me the clinton's are beating the same drum as did those who goose stepped to destruction of their country. Soyour are P!ssed at GOP, thats no excuse to run after a pied pipper of lies and false hope.

The clarity of scandal and disrespect of our military commanders is enough to know, the Washington self serving paper hanger has not leadership nor the experience to lead the cow's to the barn.

If your intention is just to stop the GOP then there are real people to vote for ,  But leave false hope in the pig pen!
I thought Hillary's message was very good...especially the one about the piling on because she is in the lead.  You only to look at the comments on all the websites to know she is right.  Everyone, right or left, is piling on because she is in the lead.
heh tony, read what i printed on the 2nd of november regarding the records that have been releasedd and also check lisa myers piece that she did this week regarding the records release and not released.  bush when he come into office signed an executive order stopping the release of documents as it pertained to the reagan/bush years and the bush/quayle years.  seems he does not want those pesky records to get out regarding iran contra. so before you start talking about hillary and bill try doing some research on something and by the way, when is cheney going to release his records as it pertains to his energy task force.  hillary released her records regarding her health care task force, where is cheney, still in the bunker with his energy records and still collecting a lot of money from halliburton.  we will probably never know what went on when the awarded the contract to halliburton and kbr for the iraq war.
maybe we went to war just to keep kbr and halliburton in lots and lots of money.
