Clinton's energy, jobs policies

Posted: Monday, November 05, 2007 1:40 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -- Clinton laid out proposals today she said would promote clean energy and create at least five million "green-collar" jobs. The wide-ranging speech was the first of a series she will deliver on the topic this week. In it, she talked about the problems caused by climate change and pollution like rising sea levels, water shortages and health problems and compared dealing with these issues to the great challenges of the last century.

"For this generation of Americans, climate change is our space race,” Clinton told the audience at Clipper Turbine Works, Inc., a factory that makes the giant wind turbines seen churning all over the Iowa countryside. “It is our home-front mobilization during World War II and it is our response to the Great Depression."

Clinton added she would push for a new post-Kyoto treaty on global warming and establish a group of the world's major carbon-emitting nations to tackle energy and environment issues.

The perceived Democratic front-runner has been talking up parts of her energy policy for weeks, highlighting her plan for a $50 billion Strategic Energy Fund to invest in alternative energy. This is the first time she has laid out a detailed proposal. She said her policy would help combat global warming, reduce America's dependence on foreign oil, improve the country's national security and be a major engine for job growth.

"What does it mean to be a patriot in America in the 21st century? “End our dependence on foreign oil," the senator said under a green-and-yellow banner that read, "Powering America's Future: New energy, new jobs."

The policy is centered on a cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions. Clinton claims it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050 from 1990 levels; cut oil imports by two-thirds from 2030-projected levels; and raise fuel efficiency standards to 55 miles per gallon by 2030.

The plan sets a goal of reducing electricity consumption 20 percent from projected levels by 2020 through strict appliance efficiency standards and incentives. It would phase out incandescent light bulbs and replace them with compact fluorescent ones -- a move Clinton said would save more than $10 billion over eight years.

Clinton would also speed the production of hybrid gas-electric vehicles, promote biofuels and public transportation and require all new government buildings to be carbon-neutral under her presidency, she said.

The Republican National Committee -- which now seems to be responding to every speech Clinton delivers -- issued this statement: “Hillary Clinton’s failed solution of throwing money at any problem and increasing government involvement in every facet of our lives will be rejected by the American people.  Senator Clinton has not earned the trust of voters on Social Security, openness and transparency, immigration or tax policy and there is no reason to believe the energy issue will be any different.”

*** UPDATE *** And the Obama camp, which usually doesn't respond, to individual Clinton speeches, issued this: “You can’t bring about change on our energy policy if you change your position to suit the politics of a presidential campaign,” Obama Iowa communications director Josh Earnest said. “When she had the chance to lead, Senator Clinton voted multiple times against legislation to increase production of renewable fuels and to increase fuel efficiency standards. To stand up for rural America and break America's dependence on foreign oil, we need a leader who won't just tell people on the campaign trail what they want to hear, but one who will tell the American people what they need to hear like Senator Obama did when he called for increased fuel efficiency standards during a speech in front of automakers in Detroit.”

As usual, Clinton is playing follow the leader.  Obama released a full energy plan MONTHS ago.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18227881/

And might I say, it is FAR more developed than Clinton's... but who would have thought different.  Why would Clinton want to commit to ANYTHING that might be controversial?
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/energy/
Very true....

Hillary probably has two sides to this issue as well.

well find that out at the next debate
Really ?
Who's she pandering to here ?
Corn growers in Iowa ?

What's Hillary Clinton's position on IDs for illegal aliens ?

What's Hillary Clinton's position on releasing her White House records ?
She says she has 'experience' and First Lady ...
Why not release her records so people can see for themselves ?

When will Hillary get us out of Iraq ?
Just another of her "positive" agenda items. Make no mistake about it, Hillary is our leader. hillaryclinton.com  just come see why, it's free and you may just learn something.

Seems people get more excited over silly and baseless attacks than things that really matter like policy.

I wonder why the policy even got some time - what has Edwards not lobbed an attack in the last 5 minutes?
As I see it, just the mention of the "gender" card is proof enough she is more confused than ever. If in defending yourself because you cannot answer questions that men pose to you for the chance to run for the highest office, or attempting to evade answers because you don' t have any, is a sure indication that any excuse to hide behind your ignorance is just sheer stupidity. All the liberals and the feminists certainly have a problem if they need to keep convincing the public they are who they think they are. Hasn't it always been a fact that when you are secure in yourself there is no need to prove it? If her first response is to run to the feminists she is certainly not tough enough to lead a country.  And, another sign of ignorance is continuing to offer  promises that are so unrealistic it is a sure sign  that she will lose most or not all of those favored her. This woman cannot be trusted, it is quite obvious!  BYE BYE LADY
Wow, so it took this long????
I wanted to make sure that Shadow had a chance to post first...
What we will see happening is Clinton touting policy initiatives while her opponents devote a portion of their stump speeches to attacking her. The less traction they get in the polls, the more time they will have to devote to things other than their policies and vision for the country.

Van
I certainly appreciate any candidate who comes up with an energy policy that takes us farther away from oil-based energy policies.  I'm pretty sure the Republican candidates aren't talking about renewable energy at all.  I love this "green collar" jobs idea.
Where is the detail in this speech? I don't see any detail but another vague speech promoting plattitudes.

Spend $50 billion dollars on what exactly?  Strategic energy funds, how is that fund going to be funded? How does she intend to curb carbon emmission? That is the real question? Changing our light bulb will help but it won't do enough.

Another play it safe from Hillary Clinton. What about renewable energy?
Bee:

To be fair, I think there are details in this proposal.  Obviously, it is difficult for any candidate to give minute specifics about any policy during a campaign speech but I think this was well articulated.
Bee you can read the details of her plan here:

http://www.hillaryclinton.com/files/pdf/poweringamericasfuture.pdf

No Dem candidate can really tout serious proposals on the environment/energy. It's all a lot of great rhetoric, but you know that it's going to get buried after Day 1 as POTUS...

did anyone notice that Sierra almost always follows jerry here. I wonder why? Jerry is sierra or should I say sierra is jerry.
"What we will see happening is Clinton touting policy initiatives while her opponents devote a portion of their stump speeches to attacking her."

Thank you Josh Earnest, for illustrating my point.

OBAMA 08
I'm glad Gore had a good influence on her.  Let's see if she walks the talk, though.
Solve two problems at once. Put all the illegal immigrants pedaling stationary bicycles connected to generators. Now that's a green collar job.

-- just a joke; don't have a cow man.
And it looks like the response from the RNC:

"Hillary Clinton’s failed solution of throwing money at any problem and increasing government involvement in every facet of our lives will be rejected by the American people.  Senator Clinton has not earned the trust of voters on Social Security, {openness and transparency}, immigration or tax policy and there is no reason to believe the energy issue will be any different"
{openness and transparency}<<<<<<<<<<<<I argee with Reps. on this one issues. IF Sen. Clinton gets the nomination, she is going to have a problem with trust issues.  How can you ask for someone's vote when you are hiding things in your past. Especially hiding things that you claim to draw your experience from? (The Clinton archive files) This will not go away, we already have a President in office who acts in secrecy.
The speech is about defining issues Bee, not details,
I know you dislike Hill but come on, beat her up with real arguments.
Sierra would also like to know who pulled the trigger on Vince, and other such nonsense, how about records for records, Clitons and both Bush folders, I wonder who would win?
Your sounding like that paper hanging guy.
In this media cycle, she knows to define issues early, that is why Edwards and Obama were wrong to attack so early. She has pulled ahead again and you guys just spit, smart politicians can do that to you. At least our people are defining issues, the repubs are still asking for recognition for their credentials. Time is tick tocking and the wildebeast are crowding around the water hole as it dries up, panic is in the air and the big cats smell fear and wish for blood. a quick movement (a few votes), and the last of the water is RED.
"Where is Dobson, he led us here, were is that other guy that has the odd couple name, his tracks are here also. Look out, there goes an 'ol' cougar, run for your lives."
Herd mentality equals extermination of the weak and infirm.
The predators feed their young.
People earn a living and the birds will build new nests, the consumption of goods and the offering of services will again churn the wheels, the universe goes on.
Ronnies morning in america was always a far gone conclusion, just look out the window, he was not clairvoyant, he just opened his eyes and saw the sun come up.
vanreuter, NY NY: '...I wanted to make sure that Shadow had a chance to post first...

Sorry, Van !
When Hillary is vague and deceitful, she should be attacked !
WHAT IS her position on IDs for illegal aliens ?
I'm waiting for your answer...
One word will do: 'FOR' or 'AGAINST'

What is her psoition on releasing the White House transcripts ?
Will she ask Bill to release them ?
Or whill she hide the transcripts ?
WHAT IS SHE HIDING ?
She should be PROUD of her White House years ...
If she really wasr proud, she'd release those transcripts IMMEDIATELY !!
It shays volumnes that she's covering up her White House record.

What is her position on Social Security taxes, van ?
Will she raise them or not ?
Or will she 'appoint a commission' ?
That shows no leadership !
It means she doesn't want to take an honest position
Is that what you're supporting, van ?
A gutless, empty pantsuit ?

Hillary Clinton, 15 years of dishonesty, scandal and divisiveness
Dickie Flatts, Charlotte, NC: '...Seems people get more excited over silly and baseless attacks than things that really matter like policy...'

and some people get worried about Obama's 'big ears' and 'white ex-girlfriend', right Dickie ?
PEOPLE ARE ASKING ABOUT THE DETAILS, HEY THERE ISN'T ANY ! REMEMBER THE CLINTON BABY OF 8 YEARS ( HEALTH CARE ) NOW SHE DIDN'T GET IT DONE IN 8 YEARS AT THE WHITE HOUSE WHY WOULD SHE CREATE A ENERGY & HEALTH CARE PLAN IN 4 YEARS IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
<<Just another of her "positive" agenda items. Make no mistake about it, Hillary is our leader. hillaryclinton.com  just come see why, it's free and you may just learn something. >>

I don't need to go to her website, Bubba, to see that she's a two-faced liar like the clown running around the White House now playing cowboys and indians.

Sorry. Her proposal is to throw more money at the issue, while Obama's is a collaborative effort between government and the auto industry and other industries to fix the environment and help reduce global warming. Hillary sounds like she's just going to throw things down Detroit's throat.

Sorry, I'll stick with my support of Obama.
CLINTON'S ENERGY PLAN IS THE SAME AS AL BORE'S, IT'S WE'LL FLY PRIVATE JETS BUT YOU PEOPLE CAN RIDE BICYLES
& EAT CARROTS, O.K NOW YOU UNDERSTAND THE ELITEST IN THIS COUNTRY !
Hillary has as much chance of changing the climate as she does of slowing down Bill's playing around.
Jerry /Sierra,which one are you really?

If taking swipes at her while delivering their own policy agendas for their proposed administrations causes the Hillary camp to actually ANSWER a question, more power to both Obama and Edwards.

Face it, Van. She LOST the debate last week. She was ill-prepared and totally side-swiped that her opponents would actually hold her feet to the fire to get her to open up about what she'd actually do if people are stupid enough to elect her President.

She failed to justify her vote for Iraq, her vote on Iran, her lack of anything resembling a fix to Social Security, her double-speak answer on illegal immigration (Orwell's spinning in his grave, btw), and even on education. The only thing she was adamant about was that she would not release her papers as First Lady. Go figure, the one thing she's absolutely sure about, and it is something that's negative.

Personally, I can't wait to see her come in 3rd in Iowa behind both Obama and Edwards.

"With the publication of two polls this week showing no change in the Democratic nomination for President, it seems clear that Hillary Clinton's position is most likely more secure than many in the media and her opponents would like it to be."

It's really messing with the new narrative...

And it is their right and responsibility to get the answers from her. They're unning campaigns of openness and honesty. She's hiding behind the name and legacy of her husband.

It isn't an attack when they say "On energy policy, I will do A, B, and C, and I will fund it by means of X, Y, and Z. This is certainly more than Senator Clinton has given the American people."

That isn't an attack. It's a statement of fact. It's how political campaigns are run. If she can't take the heat of the position of supposed front-runner, she needs to step aside for someone who can.
The senior Bush murdered JFK, personally.  He's the umbrellaman and admitted it to me.  The junior Bush raped hundreds of girls by drugging them with the same drug set (a clear vaporous liquid) that senior Bush used to send Manchurian-Candidate assassins to murder anyone who got in his way:  Innocent Lee Oswald, Bobby Kennedy, MLK, George Wallace, Gerry Ford, Ronald Regan, and Pope John Paul, II.  They also killed dozens of witnesses and vocal rape victims.  Who were victims?  Condi Rice "did everything" for W and his friends when she was under age 17.  Cheryl Williamson Grey was a victim in Dallas fed to John Tower when she was eleven years old.  Harriet Miers was the madam running the Dallas operation.  Serial rapists and serial killers lead the republican party.  Hillary Clinton has always been a fine, decent person, if more outspoken than most women.  Her love and devotion to her husband should inspire families to stay together and reflects true family values.  It is just wrong to hound her with unjustified demands to go fishing yet again in her private papers, and the professional politicos doing that evil know themselves for what they really are.
This doesn't sound any different that what we've already heard.

OK OK OK ,
Slow down boys and girls, lets calm the CAPS and please re-read your script, WHEW, for a very slow news day we gettin a little sweaty round the collar..
Sierra, don't need to re-read, re-write is in order! Hire one of them hollywood writers while they are on strike. I tell you what, that is a great thing, no new garbage for those Desperate Housewives to deal with, they can cool their thighs for awile.
Too bad though, that leaves Earl still in jail.
I have Sean Hannity on right now and listening to Bill Clinton talking on tape having a massive coronary about his wife and Tim Russert, one has to wonder if the Clinton's are totally losing it.  bad enough Hillary has no plans and no plans for the future, now her husband has to come to her rescue.  With Obama and Edwards coming after her, one has to wonder if Hillary will survive politically.

Sierra, I've already caught Van in a lie about social security and Hillary; refusing to release the WHOLE statement she made.  He is nothing more then a Hillary stooge, but we already knew that.  Van, you better get with your girl and try to siphon the blood out of the water.  i think it is too late myself, but then again it is good political theater.

By the way......

I was watching the Cowboy-Eagles game last night....
What was this about Philadelphia going green??????

They failed miserably....
Something about turning off the lights......
The Phillies baseball stadium was ablaze; baseball season is over.....
Franklin field had something going on with about 100 people in the stands, why couldn't they do that during the day?

You liberals that are pushing this green nonsense, you are about as big a morons as Al Gore......
Hillary Clinton...

...working hard for Corporate America for 15 years and counting (lobbyists are people too, you know).

Again, did I miss the convention in my own backyard???? Those are national numbers. I want Iowa numbers. I want to know how they feel she did in the debate. I want it done by either the University of Iowa or the paper in Cedar Rapids of Des Moines. None of these other groups that are pandering to one side or another.

I bet she won't feel as comfortable looking at THOSE results.
I hate the people that are running around saying "no other First Lady has had to release her papers."

Name me one other First Lady in the 231 years of our country that has run for President?

She continues to want her cake and to eat it to saying "My time as First Lady and in the Senate make me qualified to be President." Well, her time in the Senate is mostly public record through her votes and bills she's sponsored or co-sponsored, etc. Her time as First Lady is not as public and it should be. If she continues to want to tout her time as FL as qualifications to be President, don't just TELL us what you did (besides f--king up the healthcare issue in 93 and standing by Bill's side during Monicagate), but SHOW us what you did.
Mike - She is leading in the U of I poll.  The Gazette, as far as I know, does not do polling.  I'm not sure if there is a more recent Register poll, but as of 10-7 she was 6 points ahead of Edwards and 7 ahead of Obama.
Let's not forget that it was my ancestors who first coined the term "green collar".  And that is why every March 17th we dye the Chicago River, beer and anything else not nailed down--and even some of that too.  We do our part for this planet.

I really hope the term "green collar" jobs doesn't catch on.  It took me 5 years to come around to the term 9/11; I'm okay, I suppose with WTCs, I think; both the term and the existence of WMDs is highly questionable; and I absolutely refuse the term 24/7.

*Oooo, we're taking votes as to what other names Jerry goes by.  I vote nuanced, because between them, they are the funniest people on this blog.
All dems! Vote democratic on election day! Lets get the repubs out of office!!!
Thank god we'll *finally* have a President who mandates the type of light bulbs we'll use.
Edwards is  a desparate, nasty  little man, he wasn't qualified to be vice president and he's definitely not qualified to be President.  His wife is the one who should be running not him.
And the Republican Plan for Energy Conservation and Global Climate Change is what??

A Brief Look At The Post-ABC Poll
04 Nov 2007 12:14 pm

Being among the first to notice that Hillary Clinton regularly broke the 50% barrier in Democratic primary polls, there's a responsibility to point out when that barrier reseals. In the Post-ABC poll published 9/30, Barack Obama had 20 percent of the net leaned vote; he has 26 percent in the poll ending 11/1. Clinton inched down from 53 to 49. That's a net change of ... well, enough to take notice of and to see whether other polls pick it up.

Still, 81% of Democrats are satisfied with their field; 57% of Clinton supporters are "strongly" in favor of her. 50% of Obama's supporters are strongly in favor of him.

In the late September poll, 35% found Clinton to be the most honest and trustworthy; 34% do now; Obama's numbers in the field ticked up from 26 to 29.

Among the Republicans, the biggest gainer -- actually, the only gain outside the margin of error -- is John McCain, who has 19 percent of the net leaned vote, up from 12 on 9/30.
Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney are stagnant; Mike Huckabee holds steady at 5%.

Newsweek's latest shows a race relatively unchanged from last month.

*************************
Only can go up from here!!!! Obama 08
Go Hillary!!!
Interesting that Obama the king of hope is now regularly responding to Hillary with negative attacks learned from loser Edwards.  Since they’re both going down, apparently they’ve nothing to lose.  Hillary has been the front runner from day one and will continue to be and that is because she is the best candidate; she doesn’t have to resort to attacking other democrats. Pathetic Edwards and Obama are resorting to attacks since obviously they are not strong enough candidates to win on their merits.  Hillary will be an excellent president!!
You can tell morons are in the house when they say stuff like “I introduced my plan first and it was longer.”  Hillary will win…so you Hillary haters will just have to suck it up!

You will be able to buy credits (if you have the money) if you dont then its 1200 sq ft home max. 50 mpg Yugos and keep your thermostat at 80. You people are opening up a can of worms here. You have been complaining about keeping the govt out of your bedroom, now here you are giving them access and control of your whole house. This is a nightmare and you are egging it on. Remember the rules will not go for them, only the middle and lower classes. Gor, Clinton, Edwards will still live in their 10 to 15000 sq ft homes. Still drive gas hogs and fly on private jets. Their lives will not change. You will be the ones at bus stops, sweating or freezing!!! WAKE UP!!!
