Edwards blasts Hillary in Iran speech

From NBC/NJ's Tricia Miller and NBC's Abby Livingston
IOWA CITY, IA -- Edwards used his speech today on Iran to once again blast Clinton for her vote designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.

After again apologizing for his own 2002 vote authorizing the Iraq war -- and railing against the Bush Administration for its “preventive war doctrine” -- Edwards turned to Clinton’s stance on Iraq. “With less than 60 days to go before the caucus, Sen. Clinton still has not given specific answers to specific questions,” he told the crowd at Richey Ballroom at the University of Iowa. “She will extend the war. I will end the war."

And he used her vote on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to segue to his new policy on dealing with Iran, accusing her of playing along with the Administration. “Sen. Clinton is voting like a hawk in Washington and talking like a dove in Iowa and New Hampshire,” he said. “One of her advisers told the New York Times that was because she was shifting from primary mode to general election mode. Well, we only need one mode all the time, and that mode should be the same for the primary and general election, and that mode should be tell the truth mode.”

He also linked Clinton's vote to the neoconservatives who were instrumental in advocating war against Iraq: “Senator Clinton once again sided with Bush and the neocons, helping them rattle their sabers and build their case for another preventive war. It’s clear that Senator Clinton and I learned very different lessons from the run up to the Iraq war.

He used the remainder of his speech to run down his “five-point strategy to contain Iran and force the country to give up its nuclear ambitions and its support of terrorism and insurgent activity,” as phrased in the pre-speech release. Those five points are: 1) ending preventive war policies, 2) partnering with western European nations in economic sanctions against Iran, 3) enticing Iran to leave behind nuclear possibilities, 4) using multi-pronged diplomacy to interact with Iran’s leaders without being used for propaganda, and 5) drawing other major nations into discussions with Iran.

Also, in a press conference after the speech, Edwards opened the door to actions against Pakistan. “Our leverage with Pakistan is the fact that we provide millions of dollars of assistance to them of all kinds, and we should use that leverage to push Musharraf and the Pakistani government in the right direction,” he said.

What we will see happening is Clinton touting policy initiatives while her opponents devote a portion of their stump speeches to attacking her. The less traction they get in the polls, the more time they will have to devote to things other than their policies and vision for the country.

Go ! Go !
Go Johnny, GO !!

Hillary has been pandering to the Neo-Cons
It's time to call her on it !!

People in Iowa and New Hampshire ARE LISTENING !!
Hillary is PRO-WAR !1
We need an ANTI-WAR candidate

No to Republicans !!
No to Republican-lite !!
No war with Iran !!

Hillary Clinton, 15 years of dishonesty, scandal and divisiveness

Who are these "new conservatives" people like Edwards are always mentioning. How long ago did they swap parties, and when do you get the new knocked off?
'Edwards used his speech today on Iran to once again blast Clinton for her vote designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.'

does pointing out your political opponent’s policy constitute a 'blast'? were any of the statements he made false? grow up first read, maybe someone should pay attention to what edwards is saying once, at least there is no doubt where he stands on the issues.
Edwards needs to slow down on the attacks. He scored bigtime in the last debate, now he needs to score with some positives.

Obama is dropping in the polls,... will it be Edwards gain? It should be. The Debate showed Edwards could think on his feet and that hecould be tough.
Too bad it for Obama that the debate highlighted his own inexperience

(go ahead shadow, cite another internet poll, LOL)
Edwards is becoming more and more annoying. I liked him at first. The more desparate he sounds, the more I like Hillary.
"Senator Clinton once again sided with Bush and the neocons, helping them rattle their sabers and build their case for another preventive war. It’s clear that Senator Clinton and I learned very different lessons from the run up to the Iraq war."

This link between Hillary and the failures of Bush and his administration can't be stressed enough. She (and to an extent her husband) made their national political careers what they were by tacking to the right during every single election. Look where it has brought us.

Hillary is a conservative Democrat (or a moderate, or a left-leaning, depending upon the audience and political wind). She's not good for America, and she's not good for the Democratic party. Let her go.
WHILE IRANIAN AGENTS ARE SETTING OFF IUD'S ON OUR HIGHWAYS & ISLAMIC NUTS ARE BLOWING UP WOMEN & CHILDREN AT THE MALLS ON SATURDAY NIGHT, PRESIDENT
IMPOSTER EDWARDS WILL BE GETTING HIS HAIR DONE !!
YEA JOHN E. LETS PRESSURE PAKISTAN NOT TO ATTACK THE ISLAMICS IN HIS COUNTRY SO THEY CAN TAKE OVER, IS THAT HIS PLAN,WHAT DO YOU THINK MUSHARRAH IS DOING ?
Edwards is scary, to me, he comes as desparately wanting to be president and will go after anyone and say anything to get it.  He is cold and is more about himself. Also, I don't believe he can stop the war in Iraq just like that.  I am anti-war but am realistic about the situation there too.
I find Edwards very honest and not a flip-flop. He will make a good President.
Dailyhowler has some interesting perspective on this.

http://www.dailyhowler.com/

Iraq and Iran.  It is all about our "strategic interests"  i.e, oil.  It was Bill Clinton whose Justice Department approved the merger of Exxon and Mobil and BP/Amoco and so on. Bush has enriched them further. The economic power of these companies controls the political process and I applaud John Edwards for being an independent Democrat, unlike the Clintons.  The Bush/Clinton era needs to end in the Democratic primaries. Edwards can do it.
Ease up John you are sounding desperate. Tell us the good stuff, the stuff you copy from Hillary.
You are better than this John, be a man and stand for your own ideals. People want to vote for you, do not make it difficult for us.
Right on the money. I like the move.
Wisest think John has ever said in a long, long, long time.  He really has something to say here!  I cant remember the last time he said anything about anything.  This u really can sink your teeth into.  This chick is gung-ho for extending the war, largely because she is all internal-policy-wise, foreign-policy-dumb-leaveitoadvisors.  Wow: Dancing like a Dove then balking like a hawk.  Home Run with this one Edwards!  Home Run!  Clintons truly are 2faced.  She'll say anything to get elected.  And that aint kosher 2me.
Edwards is the biggest phony running in either party.  It takes a real fool to not see through him.  Just look at his 5 point Iran policy.  "Let's get our allies involved".  Hey, that's original! "Let's ask them to forget nuclear".  You got 'em now, John.  He is not a dope because he made millions off of the gullibility of jurys, etc.  Why did this clown have the poorest attendance record when he was in the Senate?  I'm a Republican and Hillary is not my favorit but runs rings around this guy.
The polls I have read show Obama winning the last debate.
Hillary / Billary - their one and the same.  Never expect honesty.
I was a Hillary fan until the last debate. I'm looking for someone who will  change the bully image we have. Edwards impressed me, though I don't agree on his gay marriage stance, I don't think he will govern by the Bible, nor his own beliefs. In the end, I'm looking for someone who will clean house--fumigate and all--and I'm getting the impression from Hillary, she'll only feather dust. My mother always said, "A feather duster just moves the dust."
Van says:

What we will see happening is Clinton touting policy initiatives.

What policy initiatives are we talking about Van?
and please pick the side she is seriously on.

If Hillary snags the Dem nomination, BE PREPARED for a river of attack ads against Democrats--all the crap from the Clinton adm will be replayed as though Bill Clinton were still president. Her fundrai$ing will dry up just as soon as she gets nominated--Republicans WANT her as the candidate. Most Americans are tired of all the negative baggage she carries. PLUS her voting record is GOP-lite and a little too pro-Israel for most Americans.

Enough! Hillary should gracefully bow out, the Dems band together for Edwards--the ONLY candidate to win in a Landslide. Don't forget, Rove is still on the PAYROLL FULL TIME! So, he's busy getting the voting machines rigged to flip for the GOP.

Notice that Edwards gets NO COVERAGE in the media. The GOP knows that he is the only candidate that can get the United States back to normal.  Don't worry about Hillary, she can be Sec of State.
It is really annoying how whenever Edwards or Obama try to get specific on the issues and bring out defining issues, the Clinton camp says they are being attacked.  Voters deserve an opportunity to see where candidates stand on the issues and then make a decision.  HRC & Co. is doing everything they can to obvuscate and blur the lines of distinction.
I totally disagree with the person who said, he needs to slow down on the attack.  The CRUX of this presidency is the War in Iraq.  It is first and foremost on everyones mind.  I frankly cant remember anything Edwards ever said about health care this, health care, that, social security this or that -- honestly it all sounds so very ignorable to me -- i just cant remember.  BUT THIS.  Taking US sons and daughters to an extended war?  THIS I WILL REMEMBER!  You got my attention Edwards!  You got.  My.  Attention!  You got everyone attention.  Hold on to this and squeeze.  Not because its a game, but because it is real.  Real consequences.  Squeeze on Edwards.  Squeeze on!  You have my attention for the first time in all these years.  This is the real deal.  You got something now.  Sink your teeth into this issue and you'll win it.  No other topic is there every single day every single hour than war.  Sink your teeth into this one Edwards.  Lets go!  Now we have a candidate!!
Edwards talking points on Iran sound like the current policy the entire world is taking.....guess what!  Iran still has nuclear ambitions and still wants to destroy Isreal and the USA.  What am I missing here?
What we will see happening is Clinton touting policy initiatives while her opponents devote a portion of their stump speeches to attacking her. The less traction they get in the polls, the more time they will have to devote to things other than their policies and vision for the country.

--------------------------------------------------

Where is madame Clinton when her opponent where touting policy change? I guess it took her for ever to announce her policy change after copying Edwarda and Obama's policy change. Please give me a break.

We all know that Clinton doesn't have anything to offer. Here is how she plagiarize other candidate without giving them credit.

Family Leave Act -- Chris Dodd's idea
Energy Policy ---- Obama + Edward
Health Care -- Edward
Education -- No plan because Obama hasn't given a
plan she can copy
Foreign Policy - More of the same with George Bush

Now tell me, what vision is she presenting exactly?

Edward is right to point out the difference.
people are blind (not everyone, but most) to what hilary is doing. she is two-faced. she is another "i'm going to say this, but do something different". i think that while edwards does need to get back to the positive of himself, versus her negatives, the truth is he understands that to get elected he can't just say elect me, he has to point out "this is why you can't elect her" because lets face it, she has a name, senate history, and wether or not anyone wants her in office, she will get automatic female votes because she somewhat resembles a woman. (hahah) JOHN EDWARDS FOR PRESIDENT!
Well all I know is we get screwed every four years. The fact that they are all now trashing Clinton makes me want to vote for her more. It's all about the lesser of evils...she might be a big B' but I think thats what we need. Also I do see what she says as her flip flopping, I see her compramising....WHAT WE NEED, NOT A PRICK THAT WILL VETO ANYTHING HE/SHE DOES NOT LIKE. All I have to say is at least she is honest...we can't pull EVERY troop out of Iraq due to what Bush did, she can't have a plan to change SS until she has all the needed information only the president gets, we need to dsocument illegels but treating them like normal citizens is not right. And Edwards...there is a great man...his wife is fighting cancer and he is out running for president.....dragging the kids all over with him...sorry but right now he should be home helping his wife...he is nothing more then Christain trash. I hate Clinton too, but she looks better in my eyes then the rest of them. But the truth is, the next Pres wont be able to do much other then clean up Bush's mess...we need a Dem. to do that..and clearly that is what we are getting...so who ever makes is to the end will get my vote....Clinton, Obama, Edwards, who ever...sorry after 911 we needed a Rep. to kick some but...saddly we got Bush who is not a Rep. hes a dictator who fooled us all.
Justin - I hate to break it to you, but the majority of American voters are moderate, whether that be liberal Republicans or conservative Democrats.  A conservative Democrat may not be attractive to primary voters and caucus goers, but more people identify with someone who takes a moderate stance on the issues rather than one who is very left or very right.
Edwards is another Jimmy Carter.  Negotiating is always the answer for the Dem's, but how do you negotiate we with a culture that is 200 years behind the rest of the world.  Just listen to Jimmy Carter--we should negotiate with Iran --he negotiated 400 + days with Iran to no avail.  Get real, back door negotiating has been going on for quite some time now and has gotten nowhere.  How do you get western Europe involved when Iran is one of their best customers??
Most of the candidates are promising to give us a health plan like John Edwards. If you want to be controlled like a robot, you’ll love it.

Under Edwards’ health plan, if you can’t afford private insurance, you’re forced into the government’s system. Then your premiums go up if you don’t get the screening or shot they tell you to get.  That is how they will control you, and most of the Dem and Pub candidates are hinting at doing the same.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/02/AR2007090200743.html

This is the little sentence in Edwards’ website that proves it’s true:

Incentives like lower premiums will reward individuals who schedule free
physicals and enroll in healthy living programs.

http://www.johnedwards.com/about/issues/health-care-overview.pdf

And don’t forget Hillary got Bill to sell pardons to help her in her senate run.

The only ones who are not control freaks that I know of are Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul.  Kucinich is the only one for single payer health care and the only one to vote against the war. Unfortunately, he talks to UFOs.  On the Pub side, Ron Paul is the best choice to clean up government.

And just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for Hillary Clinton.......

Now Michael Musto at the Village Voice is gunning for her as well.  If this story is true, this will make the debates look like a elementary school student council election.
Bee - Again, let me point out to you that Hillary's plans for Iraq are not the same as Bush's plans for Iraq.  He has no plans of removing any troops at any time in the near future.  Hillary would convene a group of foreign policy and military advisors immediately and formulate a plan to begin withdrawal as quickly as is responsible.  That's not the same position, no matter how much you want to spin it.

Again, I also stress that anyone who says "We will have the troops out by this date, this date or this date" is full of crap.  You cannot make such a promise at this point.  Look at what is happening with Pakistan now.  The global picture changes at an alarming rate, and the situation in Iraq in January 2009 may be very very different than it is now.  Yes the people want to know when we will get out, but it is foolish to provide a specific date and/or timeframe that you will be held to when elected.  Look at Bush 41. What sunk him, more than anything, was his "read my lips - no new taxes" mantra - he couldn't follow through, and he got the boot after 4 years.
john edwards is obsessed and he is going turn people off by always talking about clinton and people are going to stop listening to him!
Since when is it an attack to point out your opponent's wrong positions?

Hillary hasn't directly answered a single question since her presidential campaign began in 1993.

I hope her opponents continue to point this out. We deserve straight answers to tough questions.  Truth to power and all.
You are better than this John, be a man and stand for your own ideals. People want to vote for you, do not make it difficult for us.
------------------------------------------------------

Another bunch of silly talk.

John should keep pounding on the integrity issues. Hillary is dis-honest in her dealing with America people.
I am for Edwards myself, but I see a completely bias
in all of the networks focus on Hillary! How about
digging up some news about Republican frontrunner Rudy's 9/11 testimony that there blocking untill after the election. Come on networks you sound like
Fox news, you know fair and unbalanced!
End preventive war policy?
What does that mean? We attack only after another 9/11 or worst, after a nuclear device is detonated or aimed at us?
Edwards sounds desperate, and the alternatives he offers are dull. His speeches scream: "Believe me I'm honest."
The impression e gives is that he WANTS to give a good impression. Dishonesty disguised as honesty.

One brigade from Ft. Drum deploying to Iraq the day after tommorrow. Another brigade from Ft. Bragg deploying in two weeks. 90% of these soldiers graduated highschool this last May, and just got through basic training 4 or 5 weeks ago.

When will this end? I'm voting for whoever will get these boys home the soonest.
I like Hillary, but lately, I have been noticing that here opinion to everything is always a "YES and NO". I just want to know where she stands on every issue, and she should have only "one" specific answer... not both.
Carrie,

Stop reciting talking point when it comes to Iraq. You can't fool a whole nation by saying "Hillary would convene a group of foreign policy and military advisors immediately and formulate a plan to begin withdrawal as quickly as is responsible"

That quote alone tell me she ain't gonna do jerk. Please cut the crap out when you're talking about Iraq. Clinton doesn't have any credibility when it comes to this issues.

Here is Bush statement on Iraq.

"I'll keep the troop in Iraq until they get the job done"  The question is what exactly is the job or mission?

This nuance on iraq is nothing but bogus.

As far as i am concern Hillary is not serious on Iraq's issues. She is very evasive and cannot be trusted. I don't want any nuamce, i want detail.
To Keith Mias. If everything were black and white you may have the simple answers you seek. But most issues are more complicated than that with many layers and shades of grey. The answers to many of these issues are bundled by HRC in "On the one hand...However if" which may sound like double speak to you...and others but it makes perfect sense to me. GWB and the problems he will leave behind will require solutions that can not effectively be summed up in a 30 second sound bite or a yes or no. If more people could understand that I think we could all benefit.
All dems... just vote democratic. No matter who gets the nomination, just get those damn right wing republicans out of office! Vote democratic!
Trouble in Pakistan doesn't mean we should stay in Iraq forever. As a matter of fact, staying in Iraq weaken us from dealing with Pakistan and Afghanistan. I am tired of listening to washington establishement that don't have a single solution to our foreign policy woes. They have been wrong 100% of the time.

Comparing Iraq's withrawal to Bush 41 statement "read my lips" is irresponsible. We cannot keep sacrificing lives beacuse of political position. Enough of political gamesmanship at the expense of innocent soldiers. Bring them home, period.

How did this so called politician sleep at night? They voted for a disastrous war and put an incompetent manager in charge of it.

Spin all you like, Clinton share part of the blame.
Reference a previous post, can anybody tell Chris Johnston that IUDs do not kill our men and women in uniform, although thy can diminish the Armed Forces!
Carrie

"Again, I also stress that anyone who says "We will have the troops out by this date, this date or this date" is full of crap.  You cannot make such a promise at this point.  Look at what is happening with Pakistan now.  The global picture changes at an alarming rate, and the situation in Iraq in January 2009 may be very very different than it is now.  Yes the people want to know when we will get out, but it is foolish to provide a specific date and/or timeframe that you will be held to when elected."

I totally agree with you! None of the candidates can say with any specificity when our troops will come home and I find it a questionable, somewhat unkind, tactic to raises expectations that they can set a date for total troop withdrawal. With the instability in that region of the world, who knows what tomorrow may bring.
John Edwards is a blow dried fake...stop wasitng your breath on him...nominate him and Tom Trancedo could win the election
Edwards will try anything to get elected. "looser" Mr. Negative
HP: That is part of your obligation. They knew they were headed there; its people like you that didn't know. Military people expect everything that is going on, the ordinary citizen just doesnt understand.
REALLY, other than Bee, who gives a damn what Edwards says or does--he's so far behind the 8 ball in the Democratic primary race so as to be almost irrelevant.  His ideas and plans (well, flip-flopping stances on issues) and his desperate attacks, have him so mired in 3rd place (43% to 12% behind the frontrunner and 23% to 12% behind the secondrunner) are simply not connecting with Democratic primary voters nationwide.  True, Edwards is closer in Iowa and New Hampshire, but he'll never get out of South Carolina alive unless he wins both the first two bigtime.

BTW, national polls do mean something:  they plant the perceptions and seeds of winnability and non-winnability in the minds of ultimate voters.

Hillary is not my choice, but even I must admit she's probably the most intelligent candidate in either party and she's got the most focused and strident campaign of them all--WOW, a woman with pants and guts.

It's truly unfortunate that both Edwards and Obama feel the early need to go into attack mode.  Yet, because thet're so far behind Senator Clinton in connecting with the Democratic Party mainstream, what else can they do?  Obviously, neither of them can connect on their own without "going balistically negative".

Query:  When's the last time you've heard Sen. Clinton go negative, other than calling Obama naive for a comment he should never have made?  Further, have any of you ever heard her or her campaign complain that she's being picked on because she's a she?  Hell no you haven't.  She's being picked on for one reason, and one reason only:  She's kicking everyone else's butt!!!

Unfortunately, my 1st two choices are bogged down lower than even lowly Edwards.  Thus, it's time for me to become both objective and realistic--Hillary is going to be the Dem. nominee and, like other Bush haters, it's time for me to begin working for the ultimate goal:  Never allow another Republican to be elected president in my lifetime (I have only voted for 2 Dems for president, ever:  Lyndon Johnson and John Kerry (actually, those were anti votes [I have voted Republican in every other presidential election starting in 1964]).

Another aside: Van is, by far, the most objective commentator who contributes to this blog.  [No, I'm not Van's alter-ego, just a fan].
