Edwards blasts Hillary in Iran speech

Posted: Monday, November 05, 2007 2:33 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Tricia Miller and NBC's Abby Livingston
IOWA CITY, IA -- Edwards used his speech today on Iran to once again blast Clinton for her vote designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.

After again apologizing for his own 2002 vote authorizing the Iraq war -- and railing against the Bush Administration for its “preventive war doctrine” -- Edwards turned to Clinton’s stance on Iraq. “With less than 60 days to go before the caucus, Sen. Clinton still has not given specific answers to specific questions,” he told the crowd at Richey Ballroom at the University of Iowa. “She will extend the war. I will end the war."

And he used her vote on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to segue to his new policy on dealing with Iran, accusing her of playing along with the Administration. “Sen. Clinton is voting like a hawk in Washington and talking like a dove in Iowa and New Hampshire,” he said. “One of her advisers told the New York Times that was because she was shifting from primary mode to general election mode. Well, we only need one mode all the time, and that mode should be the same for the primary and general election, and that mode should be tell the truth mode.”

He also linked Clinton's vote to the neoconservatives who were instrumental in advocating war against Iraq: “Senator Clinton once again sided with Bush and the neocons, helping them rattle their sabers and build their case for another preventive war. It’s clear that Senator Clinton and I learned very different lessons from the run up to the Iraq war.

He used the remainder of his speech to run down his “five-point strategy to contain Iran and force the country to give up its nuclear ambitions and its support of terrorism and insurgent activity,” as phrased in the pre-speech release. Those five points are: 1) ending preventive war policies, 2) partnering with western European nations in economic sanctions against Iran, 3) enticing Iran to leave behind nuclear possibilities, 4) using multi-pronged diplomacy to interact with Iran’s leaders without being used for propaganda, and 5) drawing other major nations into discussions with Iran.

Also, in a press conference after the speech, Edwards opened the door to actions against Pakistan. “Our leverage with Pakistan is the fact that we provide millions of dollars of assistance to them of all kinds, and we should use that leverage to push Musharraf and the Pakistani government in the right direction,” he said.

Even if the global picture of middle east change, does the new picture still focus on Iraq? Please stop reciting the washington talking point and pay attention to the real detail.

Middle East culture is different from western culture. We cannot solve the problems in this region until we understand their cultural differences and ackowledge their concerns.

Putting more soldiers in Iraq will only continue the problem.

Iraq is looking more like Vietnam. Bush sincerely believe that election of Hillary Clinton will lead to continuation of the war. Remember LBJ continuation of vietnam.
All dems... just vote democratic. No matter who gets the nomination, just get those damn right wing republicans out of office! Vote democratic!
common sense democrats
------------------------------------------------------

What is the point of voting for another Democrats if they are not going to change the course on Iraq? I'd rather want Republican to continue than seeing another Democrats that is going to offer more of the same.

I know what i am going to get when it comes Republican but i don't want more of the same from democrats.
Hilary will be a corporate Democrat replacing a corporate Republican. It seems Hilary gives answers "calculated" for election purposes. Has nomination/election turned into social science like Economics? Can models and equations be used to calculate and predict outcomes? If so, perhaps the Clintons could receive the 1st Nobel Prize in Political Science for a theory of election modeling. It could be handed out by Carl Rove!!
Stu, Saginaw, MI,

I don't give a dammn about your assessment either beacuse your national polls did not win Howard Dean the election in 2000.

Please do a little research before opening your mouth and stop pretending to be someone else.
I'm sick of idiots like IntheMiddle, TX that thinks he knows and supports the military. Anyone that truly supports the military, knows they are being wasted in Iraq.
Bee - You are entitled to your interpretation, as I am entitled to mine.  Just remember - just because you view things differently does not make you right.  Not everyone is as blinded by their hatred of Hillary as you are.  I am not certain you could evaluate anything Hillary does or says in an evenhanded manner.
"Anyone that truly supports the military, knows they are being wasted in Iraq."

Truer words have never been spoken; that went to the core.
They voted for a disastrous war and put an incompetent manager in charge of it.

Spin all you like, Clinton share part of the blame.

So does your boy, Edwards.  Or did your selective memory omit that as well?
None of the candidates can say with any specificity when our troops will come home and I find it a questionable, somewhat unkind, tactic to raises expectations that they can set a date for total troop withdrawal. With the instability in that region of the world, who knows what tomorrow may bring.
Dot, Illinois (Sent Monday, November 05, 2007 4:24 PM)

This is why I am perfectly satisfied with the response that the situation will be carefully evaluated in Jan 2009 to determine the quickest, most responsible manner of withdrawal.  Any other response is pandering.
I'm sorry, but I can not see Mr. Edwards as the President of the United States. He reminds me of Carter. Probably a good guy but in no way a President. The thing that a lot of people on this blog blame Hillary for. Changing her mind too much, is also the thing that you hate GWB for. Being steadfast, and uncompromising. You cant have it both ways. If you want someone that wont quit, wont change you have him now. Mr Edwards and Sen Obama are GWB in reverse. The same thing just opposites. GWB conservative hawk, Obama, Edwards liberal doves. We need a moderate Dem or a moderate Repub. If Obama or Edwards get elected things will be no different than they are now. What happened to compromise? Now its all about the parties, what is good for America is the last thing thought of. You have President Bush on one side. Pelosi and Reid on the other. What is missing are the majority in the middle that have always made things work. I am a right leaning moderate, I make a good living but am not rich. I have 3 children a wife and pay $750.00 for health insurance. I dont need anything from the government except for them to keep me safe. There are a lot of people like me out there, some right some left, we are not standing around with our hand out. Mr Edwards nor Mr Obama need to promise me anything they just need to show me they can lead with out making promises. Alas that leaves us with Clinton,Romney or Rudy.... Until the pols start thinking of America before their party we will continue to waste time.
HP,KS.: I am not so sure. Iran is without any doubt being influenced by our every presence in Iraq. This is leading to reduced meddling in that country which is in turn leading to fewer deaths. The AP runs its report today,''Thousands Returning To Iraqi Capital''. The violence is seeing a patently provable drop, seeing portions of the US with more homicides over a two week period ending on Oct.31, than in Bagdhad, let alone Ramadi,Mosul,Basra,Tikrit,Fallujah,or Sadr City.[one report of ''20 headless Iraqis''turned out to be false]. Services have not only returned to prewar levels, but in the case of electricity, have exceeded them. Thousands of small businesses have reopened, with Michael Yon,a combat correspondant reporting yesterday that the outside-GreenZone areas are quiet.''Didn't hear a shot fired'' as he walked the streets of the city.''Really weird, how quiet it is'',said another soldier working with reconstruction units while building roads in South Baghdad,a former scene of the worst violence. Always trying to make lemons out of lemonade, the AP reports:''As Iraq Casualties Decrease,Cemetary Workers Feel The Pinch''.
War weariness, coupled with the destruction of al Qaeda in Iraq and a glimpse of how things can be in a city with open shops, radios turned up,consumers buying goods, normal traffic patterns, and packed restaurants has placed the war on a tipping point with the results not yet clear, but a picture starting to form that is not in line with the most dire fears[or more dastardly, wishes],of the wars critics. For those soldiers who would argue with your position that they are being ''wasted'', who are now in Iraq or recently returned,go here:

If you want to be controlled like a robot, Edwards is your man.

Under Edwards’ health plan, if you can’t afford private insurance, you’re forced into the government’s system. Then your premiums go up if you don’t get the screening or shot they tell you to get.  That is how they will control you.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/02/AR2007090200743.html
This is the little sentence in Edwards’ website that proves it’s true:

“Incentives like lower premiums will reward individuals who schedule free
physicals and enroll in healthy living programs.”

http://www.johnedwards.com/about/issues/health-care-overview.pdf

Going over the health plans of other Dems and Pubs, I found that most of them are planning to do the same thing – and don’t forget Hillary got Bill to sell pardons to help her in her senate run.

The only ones who are not control freaks that I know of are Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul.  Kucinich is the only one for single payer health care and the only one to vote against the war. Unfortunately he talks to UFOs.  On the republican side, Paul is the best choice to clean up government.
Who are these "new conservatives" people like Edwards are always mentioning. How long ago did they swap parties, and when do you get the new knocked off?
Dave, Tn

--- they are CINOs, conservative in name only. They are really radicals who want to establish an authoritarian government to run peoples lives and the world. They have been around since the 80s, many started out as far left commie types but took the small step politically to the far right.
Bee why do you hate America?  Why do you hate Hillary? b/c she is so much smarter than you will ever be BEE? She has achieved many things in her life and she will survive you and your hate. I bet she does not trust you or think you are a good American.  I don't either. You fill this blog with your repuke troll slander and I have given up reading your drivel.
Everyone needs to blast Hillary and her speeches!
It is evident that Edwards is trying to solidify the hard left of the democratic party-nice job John. What America needs is another extremist in the White House-yeah. It is also evdent that Edwards like other leftist haven't read up on the Revolutionary Guard. IF he tried to be honest on this issue he wouldn't blast Hillary-but once a lefty always a lefty-leftys love th truth-yeah

-No to Democrats
-No to Republicans
-No to Extremists
