Edwards' three Iraq questions

From NBC/NJ's Tricia Miller
NEWMARKET, NH -- At a town hall here, Edwards called on New Hampshire primary voters to ask candidates three specific questions about their plans for Iraq.

“These are the questions I think should be asked -- and answered -- by everybody,” he told the crowd inside Stone Church. “First, will you have all combat troops -- all combat troops -- out of Iraq in the first year of your Administration? That’s question number one. The answer to that question for me is yes, I will have all combat troops out of Iraq.

"Second, if you’re not going to have all combat troops out of Iraq, are you going to continue combat missions in Iraq over the longer term? The answer to that for me is no, because continuing combat missions is continuing the war. And if we’re going to bring this war to an end, we have to get combat troops out and we have to stop combat missions in Iraq, and I will do that.

"The third question is, will you keep permanent military bases in Iraq? The answer to that question for me is no, I will not. No combat troops, no combat missions, no permanent military bases.”

He continued by answering the questions for front-runner Clinton, charging that she would keep combat troops in Iraq; that those troops would continue combat missions; and that he “assumes” they would need somewhere to stay in Iraq. “To me, that’s not ending the war. Ending the war is getting our combat troops out and ending combat missions,” he said.

This a defining issue for Edwards but it was not his best idea. Defining questions also defines you. Without answers, specific answers being given he is just debating without creating the information we are looking for. A lot of good points in this post. I see with this that our party and its members continue to talk issues. While Dan and Ted and their ilk want to continue to prove that Iraq is the front on the war on terror the rest of america will talk about issues, this is why the repubs are in the doldrums, don't lose sight of the White House and we will win in 08.
Hey Dan and Ted, don't look under your bed, there are democrats lurking, they have their voters cards in their hands and are ready to create the avalance of change.
Edwards/Biden 08' or Edwards/Obama

Come on democrats! I too love the Clintons and the best years of my life were during the Clinton presidency but Hillary is not Bill. We need a real leader with real answers. Edwards is for the American people and even my Republican co-workers and friends are leaning towards Edwards! This country needs change and Edwards is just the man for the job. he needs to tighten up his stance on illegal immigration and he will be perfect.
edwards is the best candidate to get this country back on track which is why the corporate run media has consistently slighted him from the beginning, edwards is the only candidate that intends to take on the business as usual system we now have in washington, if you truly want change, edwards 08

2. Yes, if it necessary to protect the Iraqi people and their young and fragile Constitutional Democracy from the mass murdering tactics of al-Qaeda, the hardcore Saddamist, and the Iranian proxie thugs.
3. ABSOLUETLY YES, if the Iraqi government invites us to do so."

1. The head of the Iraqi fragile Democracy is one of those Iranian proxie thugs.
2. Ditto.
3. The Iraqi government invited us to take Blackwater out of the country, when are they leaving? Is their sovereignty limited to just asking us to come in?

I'll add a few questions of my own.

4. If the Iraqi government invites us to stay, is it because they want us to fight al-Qaeda, the hardcore Saddamists (which I assume are the Sunni Arabs), and the Iranian proxie thugs (I assume to be the Shiites), or to protect them from their own people?

5. How long can we keep the Turks out of Kurdistan?

6. How long can we afford to borrow billions monthly to pay for this mess?

7. How high will the price of oil climb because of all of this instability?

William of Little Rock wrote, "To do otherwise would be visionless, shortsighted, and very very stupid."

Handing out blank checks is what is very very stupid.
Jim - Aren't we a bit elitist?  The problem is not the lack of education of those posting comments.  The problem is that people such as yourself equate disagreeing with you to being uneducated and uninformed.
HP Boston - I was with you until you laid all blame at the feet of the Clintons.

When a candidate is honest, some brain-damaged hillbilly DOES scream "Commie" (obviously having never finished High School, let alone have a Political Science class under his belt).

This country IS full of huypocrites that would ditch the Constitution in HEART BEAT for an administration that was hard-line with a good BS story about protecting the country and jailed everyone from the "other side."

I don't want Hilldawg, either, but after Emperor Maximillian Jorge Cesar Napoleon Nero Bush the Lesser and his delightful dance partner, Evil Incarnate - I'm not going to come unglued over the prospect of Hilldawg.
"Charity begains at home." we need to start thinking about the people of the U.S. for a change. Hell with Iraq,Iran,Korea,China, Afganistan & Pakastan. We send these countries trillions of dollars and the lives of our youth and nothing has gotten better. Just stop! Whats the over and under? Worst they will find someone else to sponge off of, best is the the U.S. becomes stronger and more independant. The parasites are sucking us dry. I don't even like any of them.
can we put edwards in iraq in exchange for the troops
Going into Iraq was a mistake! [The kind of "war" we've waged in Iraq was a HUGE mistake (McCain explained over 3 years ago we needed more boots on the ground)]

Hastily exiting Iraq, as Edwards would do, without first assuring some sort of stability, would be the BIGGEST mistake of all.  Its sucks that we are embroiled in this fiasco, but it is OUR fiasco and we have a moral obligation to try to right it, as well as self interest in ensuring Iraq does not become fertile ground for muslim extremists, fueled by Iran, eagerly seeking to ignite WW III and usher in an Islamic World Order.

Edwards is a wimp who, even in peaceful times, has NO business serving as Commander and Chief.

Hillary, despite her NUMEROUS tragic flaws, has more chutzpah than anyone save McCain and Guiliani and more guile than all of the candidates combined.  While she would be a socialist horror on domestic issues, and would appoint Justices from the Larry Tribe school of Constitutional Jurisprudence (every  group, including criminals, illegals and he-she's,  except white males,is entitled to favorable treatment under the Constitution), on foreign policy, I think she would be tough as nails.  Love her or hate her, Hillary has big brass b---s!
Can we suck the oil out of that country in the same one year time frame?  That's what this whole mess is about anyway.
Can we suck the oil out of Iraq before we bring the troops home?  That's what this whole mess is about anyway.

Over three years ago, wow! One of our generals said the same thing two years before that. He was forced to retire.

What do you mean by "does not become fertile ground for muslim extremists;" it already is. What sucks is that in the same sentence you share the blame with all of us. I disagree, this is W's war plain and simple. You're trying to have the "decider" avoid responsibility for it.
Sounds like a good plan to me. In the name of oil we smashed a miserable country. It may have been miserable, but it was in better condition than what we have turned it into. Next time we should pick on countries we are sure we can beat, like Andorra or doesn't Greneda have oil?
John Edwards is awesome. He has lots of great ideas about what he wants to do and thats good for everyone on the United States.
I just watched you on the New Hampshire debates.  I am a registered Republican but would like to vote for you if I have the opportunity.  I hope the views you are espousing you really believe in.  I am not at all happy with the ones I have to vote for this time.  I feel you did a very good job tonight but feel sometimes the media is very biased.  Please don't let Hillary get the best of you.  She is very strong and very wrong.
